The article examines the positive and negative qualities of the BMW X5 e53 body (pre-styling version of 1999-2003).

Start of production of SUVs

The German concern BMW has always produced only passenger cars before, and fans of the popular brand at one time could not even imagine that someday the company would start producing SUVs.

The first all-wheel drive crossover SUV rolled off the BMW assembly line in 1999 and was given the X5 index.

The name BMW X5 is deciphered quite simply:

  • BMW is the brand of the company;
  • X - means that the car is four-wheel drive;
  • 5 - take a passenger car of the fifth series as a basis.

The first BMW X5 cars were sold in Europe, and in 2000, 25 thousand German SUVs were sold in the United States.

But many at that time were skeptical about the appearance of the X5 car and did not know what class it belonged to - someone believed that this car was a large SUV, others called BMW a crossover.

By the very same company, the model was developed as a sports model - according to external data and technical characteristics.

In 2003, X-Fifth underwent restyling:

  • there were minor changes in the external design;
  • the all-wheel drive of the x-Drive system began to be installed;
  • new power units have appeared in the line of motors.

The production of the SUV ceased in 2006, and the German concern began production of the second generation X5.

Body problems

The BMW X5 E53 SUV (1999-2006) was based on the 5-series passenger car in the E39 body, but the base of the X5 is shorter, and the car itself is taller and wider.

Although the crossover was presented for both the American and European markets, it was assembled only in America, in the state of South Carolina.

E53 body is galvanized (coating layer 9-15 microns), it is subject to processing completely, including hard-to-reach places.

The body iron is very durable, and the metal is much thicker than that of Japanese cars, but over time, chips and scratches appear on the paintwork of the car, but the iron under them does not rust.

The design of the X5 crossover is bright, on the road it sees from afar. But with all the advantages of the car, it also has its own characteristic shortcomings in the body, they are also called "sores".

An example of one such disease is freezing of exterior door handles. The handles themselves are duralumin, and if tugged carelessly, they can be broken.

It should be noted that two doors open at the trunk - the lower and the upper. On the top cover, the lock breaks down quite often, the most typical breakdown is for the pre-styling version.

The trunk opening button also often breaks down, and the contacts on the backlight of the rear license plate also oxidize.

Engines

On the BMW E53 model, engines with a volume of less than 3 liters were not installed at all.

From the very beginning of production, the car was equipped with two motors:

  • 3.0 L gasoline (6 cylinders, in-line, 231 HP);
  • 4.4 L gasoline (8 cylinders, v-shaped, 286 HP).

In 2001, a number of power units were updated, and two more engines were added:

  • 3.0 L diesel (6 cylinders, in-line, 184 HP);
  • 4.6 liters gasoline (8 cylinders, v-shaped, 255 HP).

In 2003, the diesel and gasoline engines 4.4 liters were modernized, their power was increased to 218 and 320 liters, respectively. pp., in 2004, the 4.6-liter ICE was replaced with a more powerful 4.8-liter power unit.

The 3-liter engines of the M54 model were installed on the X5 most often, and these engines are generally reliable, they rarely break.

Nevertheless, the M54 has characteristic "sores", there is no escaping them:

  • camshaft sensors fail;
  • oil is consumed for no apparent reason (up to 1l / 100 km, although the engine is completely serviceable and does not smoke);
  • the top plastic cover cracks;
  • clogged crankcase ventilation.

The "big" engine BMW X5 E53 (4.4 / 4.6 / 4.8 l) does not give car owners any special problems, and there is basically only one problem here - increased fuel consumption.

For example, an internal combustion engine of 4.4 l (M 62) in the city consumes 18-21 l / 100 km, while the car should be refueled with AI-95 gasoline.

Problems can arise with diesel engines, the most common malfunction is the failure of the injectors, they coke and stop working.

Before purchasing a car with a diesel engine, the buyer should go with the owner to diagnose the engine, it is better to contact.

Transmission

X5 crossovers with gasoline V-shaped engines were equipped only with automatic transmissions, manual transmissions were not provided for them.

Automatic transmission BMW X5 E53 is considered maintenance-free and, according to the manufacturer's instructions, the oil should not be changed in it.

Maybe in Germany this is the way it should be, but in Russian conditions, the oil in the automatic transmission needs to be changed at intervals of about every 60 thousand km.

The manual transmission on an SUV is very reliable. The BMW X5 E53 box usually requires repairs not earlier than after 220-250 thousand km.

Of course, you should follow the operating rules:

  • drive carefully;
  • periodically check the oil level in the manual transmission (after 20 thousand km);
  • change the oil (after 100-120 thousand km).

Salon

What they love the BMW X5 for is the chic interior, the driver and passengers feel comfortable here, the pleasant design of the interior space of the car pleases the eye.

Many interior elements are covered with leather, there are natural wood inserts. The seats are also leather, in a word, BMW X5 E53 is a luxury car.

The vehicle is equipped with:

  • electric steering wheel adjustment;
  • multimedia;
  • electric heating of all seats;
  • electric seats with many different settings;
  • audio and video system;
  • power windows for all doors;
  • electric mirrors.

There are also other amenities for the driver and passengers in the cabin.

In general, we can say that the X5 SUV has a complete "stuffing". An abundance of electronics often leads to problems, breakdowns of electronic components are common.

Over time, the air conditioner blower regulator may stop working, the electric mirrors refuse to be fixed in the folded position.

When lifting or lowering the windows, the windows can creak, it is found that the rear ESPs lower the windows spontaneously.

Repairs to car owners are not cheap, spare parts are quite expensive.

Suspension

On the X5, the suspension is in many ways similar to that of the BMW 5 Series in the E39 body, but the load on it is slightly higher, since the body of the SUV is heavier.

Front suspension.

The E53 chassis does not cause any major problems to car owners, mostly premature breakdowns occur due to broken Russian roads.

First of all, the stabilizer struts fail, but these parts are the "weakest" on other cars as well.

Front stabilizer bar.

BMW X5 has good handling, it behaves steadily when cornering. The driver, while driving this car, does not get tired - the car obeys the steering well, the suspension is moderately stiff.

All-wheel drive allows the crossover to overcome difficult sections of the road, but it is better not to get into impassable mud on such a car.

On the plus side, the X-5's brakes are great and can be relied on in many difficult driving situations.

BMW X5 (e53)- a car produced by the BMW concern since 1999 (in Europe it has been sold since 2000), the first generation of which was injected until 2006. This midsize crossover immediately conquered the world with its harmonious proportions, powerful engines, impressive cross-country characteristics and luxurious interior. If we add the prestige of the German brand to this set, it becomes clear that its success in the market was assured!

History of creation

In the 90s, it became clear to marketers that without a prestigious and high-quality mid-size crossover in the lineup of models, it is difficult to count on success in the American market. As a result, it was decided to develop a corresponding vehicle. It is noteworthy that the result turned out to be excellent - the BMW X5 can be simultaneously attributed to 2 categories - an urban crossover and a full-fledged SUV (albeit with a slight stretch).

The famous designer Chris Bangle, who at that time worked in the BMW concern, got down to business, and the first sketches of the future model were ready in the second half of the 90s. The work was facilitated by the fact that in those years the BMW concern already owned the British company Land Rover, whose experience in the production of SUVs could not be ignored. So, the BMW X5 has many similarities with the Range Rover L322.

Marking the same BMW X5 (e53) means that the 5th series was chosen as the basis, and "X" represents all-wheel drive. However, the body of the BMW X5 is 15 cm shorter than that of the 5 Series, and is even wider and taller.

Exterior

1999-2002

The designers did an excellent job - the BMW X5 (e53) came out bright and solid. But the company needed a model that combined these qualities with a touch of sportiness, and the BMW X5 was just that. The branded "nostrils" of the radiator grille, a relatively small front bumper with an air intake, a sloping hood with several understamping, straight lines of optics - all this made the crossover's front face extremely serious, but not "dry".

Lines running through all the body panels gave the model an ambiance. And the stern, with its smooth features of the fifth door, spectacular over the rear window, an almost flat roof, a small protrusion of the rear bumper and verified features of the taillights, completed the composition in the best possible way.

In addition, the off-road qualities were emphasized by the black plastic inserts that run along the sills and wheel arches, and the sporty character, among other things, manifested itself in the eye-catching alloy wheels and low-profile tires.

Restyling 2003-2006

In the course of the facelift carried out in 2003, the appearance of the crossover has changed somewhat. The image itself remained the same, but the hood was retouched, which slightly changed its shape, as well as the branded radiator grill. The outlines of the front bumper have changed, and the head optics and taillights have also been improved.

Engines

1999 year

In the first generation of the SUV, there were 2 gasoline power units. A more modest, 3-liter M54B30 engine had an in-line arrangement of cylinders and produced 231 hp. With. This BMW X5 3.0i was a great choice for most customers.

But a much larger version was also available, powered by the 4.4-liter V8 M62TU engine. The power of such a BMW X5 4.4i was significantly higher - 286 hp. With. Even the weakest, 3-liter engine had excellent dynamics, accelerating the heavy crossover to 100 km / h in just 8.5 seconds, while its more powerful brother could compete with many "charged" models. Its feature was the unique Double Vanos gas distribution system, which allowed the engine to operate at maximum efficiency at almost any speed.

year 2001

This year, the line of power units has been thoroughly replenished with two more motors. The first was the 3-liter turbodiesel M57, equipped with the latest Common Rail system at the time. Its power was 184 liters. with., and the fuel consumption of the BMW X5 3.0d only slightly exceeded 8 liters.

A new M62B46 gasoline engine also became available - a 4.6-liter V8, developing 347 hp. With. This BMW X5 4.6is was perfect for fans of dynamic driving.

2003 year

The restyling of this year was not limited to just one editing of the exterior: a 4.4-liter gasoline unit and its diesel counterpart, with a volume of 3 liters, were removed from the model.

In place of the turbodiesel, a unit of a similar volume was installed, but its power increased significantly - from 184 to 218 liters. With. In addition, this engine had a huge torque of 500 Nm, which made it possible to drive calmly and confidently off-road, climbing any slope. It was also surprisingly economical, consuming only 8.6 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km, and accelerating the BMW X5 “to a hundred” in just 8.3 seconds.

The 4.4-liter gasoline engine was also replaced with a unit of a similar volume, but much more technological and powerful - the output from it reached 320 hp. With. The motor received the Valvetronic option (valve lift control system), the proprietary Double Vanos technology, as well as a specially designed intake system, with the possibility of smooth adjustment of the length of the intake tract. Its dynamics are excellent - 7 sec. up to 100 km / h, while the top speed is electronically limited to 240 km / h.

Photo: BMW x5 4.8is (e53) 2004 year

2004 year

This year saw the last modernization of power units. In this case, the 4.6-liter V8 was removed from service, replacing it with the same layout, but already with a 4.8-liter N62B48 engine with a capacity of 360 hp. With. The BMW X5 4.8is accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in just 6.1 seconds, and the average consumption is approximately 13.5 liters.

In general, given the presence of a 93-liter fuel tank, the range of the SUV is quite decent. Naturally, the diesel BMW X5 is preferable in this respect.

Checkpoint

The car could be equipped with either a manual transmission (5-speed) or a 5-band Steptronic automatic transmission, and the manual transmission was available only for diesel modifications. During the upgrade, each of the transmissions received one more gear, but the "mechanics" were again offered in the base only with a diesel engine, while the 6-band Steptronic automatic transmission came with any units.

Chassis

Pre-styling version

The highlight of the BMW X5 was the permanent all-wheel drive. As for the chassis, for the sake of comfort and perfected handling, it was made completely independent. Of course, such a decision somewhat lowered the off-road qualities of the crossover, but the engineers practically leveled the lag.

For example, the rear suspension was equipped with a unique system for maintaining ground clearance, regardless of the load (static). This became possible due to the use of electronically controlled pneumatic elements in the suspension structure.

The brakes feature not only impressive calipers, but also Dynamic Control, which locks the pads even further when the pedal is actively depressed. There is also a system of assistance when descending from the mountain, which allows you to maintain the trajectory at a speed not exceeding 12 km / h.

In addition, there is a whole electronic complex Dynamic Stability Control, which includes the following systems:

  • Cornering Brake Control;
  • Automatic Stability Control;
  • Dynamic Brake Control.

Restyling

The all-wheel drive system has been upgraded. xDrive was programmed to constantly analyze the position of the crossover and optimally redistribute the torque between the axles. The design also includes an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch.

Interior

The interior is made luxuriously - noble finishing materials, wood inserts, soft and expensive plastic - all this was widely used during the creation of the BMW X5. It is noticeable that many solutions are taken from the 5th series. The seats and the steering wheel have a huge number of adjustments, and the visibility is excellent, only the front pillars, wide at the bottom, interfere. The multifunction steering wheel is comfortable to reach, and the dashboard is as informative as possible and not overloaded with unnecessary sensors. Well-positioned air vents blend harmoniously into the interior and quickly create a cozy atmosphere.

But there are some unpleasant moments in ergonomics. This is a mass of small keys scattered on the center console, some of which are also blocked by the gear selector.

Thanks to the large glass area inside the car, it is always light, and rear passengers will not have to complain about comfort - there is enough space even for tall people.

BMW X5, which received the E53 index. According to the old tradition, the model was presented to the public at the Detroit Auto Show. It marked the beginning of a completely new approach to the creation of cars of this class. Many motorists positioned the X5 "BMW E53" as an off-road vehicle, but the creators insisted that the car belongs to the class of crossovers with an increased degree of cross-country ability and sports functionality.

A bit of history

Creating the first X5, the Germans did not hide that their main task was to surpass the Range Rover, producing the same respectable and powerful car, but with more modern equipment. Initially, the X5 "BMW E53" was produced at home - in Bavaria. After BMW took over Rover, the car began to be produced also in the American open spaces. Thus, the car mastered both Europe and the United States.

Of course, an auto giant like BMW couldn't make a bad car. The X5 E53 model has everything the company is famous for: build quality, electronics precision, material reliability and other distinctive features of the Bavarians. The hero of our today's discussion is designed for comfortable travel on any surface and light off-road. In addition, the car was assigned the class of sports cars.

General information

The first generation model had a load-bearing body structure. It was packed with electronic systems, all-wheel drive, independent suspension, and increased ground clearance. The E53 series was distinguished by a stylish and spacious interior, which was very restrained, solid and luxurious at the same time. The standard equipment of the machine included:

  • inserts made of wood and leather (classic for a German company);
  • orthopedic chairs;
  • steering wheel adjustment;
  • climate control;
  • electric sunroof;
  • very roomy trunk.

To some extent, the E53 model still managed to catch up and surpass Range Rover. Many details were frankly copied from the legendary SUV: the solidity of the exterior, the double-leaf rear door. With the Rover, the X5 also comes with some functions, for example, speed control on the descent.

Specifications X5 "BMW E53"

The first generation of the legendary crossover was repeatedly refined both externally and constructively. One gets the impression that the Germans wanted to be ahead of their time and bring their creation to complete perfection. Initially, the car was produced, equipped with three different options for the power plant:

  1. Gasoline engine 6-cylinder in-line.
  2. The motor is 8-cylinder V-shaped. This type of engine was made of aluminum and featured a self-adjusting cooling system, continuous injection and digital electronics. Thanks to the powerful engine (286 hp), the car reached a speed of 100 km / h in almost 7 seconds. The motor is equipped with a proprietary Double Vanos gas distribution mechanism, which made it possible to squeeze the maximum speed out of the power plant at any speed. The engine was equipped with a 5-speed. This motor was considered the most interesting.
  3. Diesel engine 6-cylinder.

Later, new, more powerful motors appeared. German mechanics have created an innovative torque distribution system: when a wheel slips, the program slows it down and gives more revolutions to the other wheels. This and much more determines the high cross-country ability of the car as a crossover. The rear axle has special elastic elements, which are based on pneumatics. Even under high load, the electronics maintains the ride height at the correct level.

The brake system X5 "BMW E53" also has its own zest. Large brake discs, together with an emergency stop control program, significantly increase the braking force. The above system takes effect when the brake pedal is fully depressed. The crossover also has a speed hold setting of about 11 km / h when descending from an incline. As for that in the basic versions, a manual transmission was available, and as an option - an automatic transmission. "BMW X5 E53" in expensive trim levels was immediately equipped with an automatic transmission.

Despite such an abundance of positive qualities, the car was far from a real SUV. The frame was soon changed to a load-bearing body, which naturally affected all the qualities of the car. The Germans were very keen on automation, although it often prevents the driver from solving a particular problem. For example, when entering a mountain or getting into a rut, the electronics does not allow you to downshift. And on sharp turns, the gas pedal freezes, and you can take the car to the desired radius only with the help of the steering wheel.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the technical part

Obeying the laws of the market, since 2003 the Germans began to modernize the E53 model:

  1. All-wheel drive has been completely redone.
  2. The xDrive system was improved as much as possible: the electronics began to analyze the condition of the roadway, the steepness of bends, measure the data obtained with the driving mode and independently regulate the torque between the axles.
  3. Lateral roll and damping are automatically adjusted.
  4. Parking has become easier thanks to the presence of two cameras.
  5. The brakes received a system for removing moisture from the discs.
  6. The system is so smart that any sudden release of your foot from the gas pedal is interpreted by it as preparation for emergency braking.

The V-shaped gasoline engine received the Valvetronic system, which regulates valve travel, as well as smooth intake adjustment. As a result, the engine power reached 320 hp. sec., and acceleration to the cherished 100 km was reduced to 7 seconds. The maximum speed, depending on the tires, was 210-240 km / h. Another useful change: the 5-speed gearbox has been replaced with a 6-speed one.

The upgraded crossover received a new diesel engine with a capacity of 218 liters. With. and a torque of up to 500 Nm. With this engine, even the most unpredictable obstacles were completely obeyed by the BMW X5 E53. The diesel engine could reach a speed of 210 km / h, and accelerated to 100 km in 8.3 seconds.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the interior and exterior

The body shape was also slightly changed, and the hood received a new, more expressive, radiator grille. The already respectable car began to look even more interesting. However, due to the plastic body kit, the car seemed a little softer. The bumpers and headlights have also undergone minor revisions. The body length has increased by 20 cm, which is quite a lot. The lengthening made it possible to add a third row of seats and make the interior removed obsessive excesses and slightly modified the dashboard.

The restyled body has achieved near-perfect aerodynamic results. Its Cx coefficient is 0.33, which is very good for a crossover.

Luxury pay

All of the above qualities, dressed in a chic shell, could well have become a reason for bringing the X5 E53 into the ranks of a luxury car, which entails not always pleasant consequences. For example, spare parts for this car cost a lot of money. However, taking into account the Bavarian quality, the repair of the BMW X5 E53 was extremely rare for the owner. But what really amazes is the appetite of the crossover. With 10 liters per 100 km declared in the passport, it consumes almost twice as much. Another 5 liters - and the consumption will be comparable to the legendary "Hummer".

Achievements

Be that as it may, in 2002 in Australia, this model was recognized as the best four-wheel drive car. And after 3 years, she got into Top Gear and thereby confirmed her title. It was by analogy with this car that such famous cars as the Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and

In 2007, the history of the BMW X5 E53 car ended, and it was replaced by the new X5 with the E70 index.

Sales market: Russia.

In 2003, the luxury sports crossover BMW X5 E53 appeared in an updated form. Like the previous version, the restyled X5 first debuted in the North American market, where it was produced. With the cosmetic refinement of the design, the model also received numerous technical changes, including the modernization of the power unit and the introduction of the new xDrive all-wheel drive system. Among the external distinguishing features of the modernized BMW X5 are the new adaptive bi-xenon lighting technology with the so-called "angel eyes" (luminous rings around the headlights), a larger branded double grille and a more aggressive new bumper. There are new body colors, various additional options. The range of engines includes a new 4.4-liter petrol V8 (320 hp) and a 3.0-liter diesel inline-six with the Common Rail system (218 hp).

The interior of the updated BMW X5 E53 has a new steering wheel, in a four-spoke design or in a three-spoke sport performance. The instrument cluster has been updated. The front panel architecture, the arrangement of the keys and buttons have not changed. The equipment added a servo-driven upper tailgate with a soft close function. Improved interior trim and seat upholstery including Dakota leather (standard on V8 models). For the updated crossover, the following were offered: a panoramic roof, a Bluetooth system, and electric rear seats. Automatic light control included as standard. As usual, the BMW X5 is equipped with many premium options, including an electrically adjustable steering column, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel and more.

The updated X5 in 2003 offers a new modification with a gasoline 4.4-liter V-shaped "eight" from the BMW 7-Series, the power of which reaches 320 horsepower (torque 440 Nm), as well as a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel with six located in a row of cylinders - it produces 218 "forces" and has a maximum torque of 500 Nm. The engines were mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed "mechanics", depending on the modification. The 4.4i xDrive model reaches a top speed of 240 km / h, from zero to 100 km / h, the crossover accelerates in 7 seconds. The same parameters for the 3.0d xDrive model are 203 km / h and 8.3 seconds. Later, the range of the SUV was replenished with a sports modification 4.8si xDrive, equipped with a 4.8-liter V8 engine (360 hp, 500 Nm) - in this case, the "maximum speed" reached 246 km / h, and to accelerate to "hundreds" required 6.1 sec. Remained in the range and a modest gasoline inline "six" 3.0i (231 hp, 300 Nm), which boasts a slightly lower fuel consumption than the powerful V8 - 12.7 l / 100 km in the combined cycle against 13 , 1-13.5 l / 100 km. The diesel BMW X5 is even more economical: an average of 8.6-9.4 l / 100 km. The 93 liter fuel tank provides ample range with a single fill.

The crossover BMW X5 E53 shares many elements of the chassis structure with the "five" E39. Both independent suspensions are mounted on separate subframes. An air suspension was offered that regulates the height of the ground clearance: in the standard it has a value of 203 mm. One of the important changes in the restyled E53 was the new xDrive all-wheel drive system - it became plug-in, using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, while the xDrive system constantly analyzes the road situation and driving mode, and, if necessary, dynamically redistributes the engine torque between the axles. Body dimensions of the model: length 4667 mm, width 1872 mm, height 1707 mm. The wheelbase is 2820 mm, and the minimum turning radius is 6 m. The luggage compartment has a volume of 465 liters, the maximum volume with the rear seats folded is 1550 liters. A convenient solution is the upper and lower sections of the tailgate that open separately.

The first generation BMW X5 is equipped with six airbags, anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution. The standard equipment also includes an electronic stability control system, an assistant when descending from a mountain, rear parking sensors, a rain sensor and other equipment. The body of the E53 meets stringent passive safety requirements - the vehicle has been highly rated in crash tests by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Excellent appearance, good handling, luxurious comfortable interior are the main advantages of the BMW X5. This crossover may not have enough off-road performance, but for many fans of the model, this is not so important. And besides, the BMW X5 has always been one of the status cars. Today, the range of prices for used E53s is quite large, but you should not even consider suspiciously cheap options if the goal is to find a car in excellent technical condition, with a minimum number of owners and with an impeccable history. The latter is very important: after all, this car is one of the "champions" in terms of stealing. As for diseases and typical malfunctions, they are all well studied, but you should be prepared for expensive service.

Read completely

    The BMW X5 has recently been the dream of many young (and not only) drivers. At the moment, the secondary market is overflowing with offers of the X5 in the back of the E53. Since the car has been produced for more than 15 years, then the prices for its first models are quite affordable, but it is very, very problematic to find a not "killed" device. There is also a popular belief that this car requires significant financial costs from its owner. Let's try to answer the question: "Is this really so?"

    For the first time, the BMW X5 was shown to the general public in 1999, and immediately began selling it in North America. A year later, its sales started in European countries. In 2003, there was a slight facelift of the model, and the line of its power units changed slightly. In 2006, the next generation BMW X5 came out, and the body was already indexed E70. It is interesting that initially the X-fifth was assembled in the American city of Spartanberg for the whole world, but now it is being assembled in Russia as well.

    2000 BMW X5

    The first E53 models were equipped with two gasoline units: an inline six-cylinder 3-liter (M54 index - 231 forces) and a 4.4-liter V8 (M62 index - 286 forces). In 2001, the line of motors was added diesel six-cylinder 184-horsepower 3.0 with the M57 index and a petrol V8 with a volume of 4.6 (346 forces). In 2003, the model was restyled, and the diesel was replaced with the same three-liter, but more powerful - 218 horsepower. The petrol 4.4 was changed to N62, with a capacity of 320 hp. And instead of 4.6, they began to install 4.8 (360 hp) motors.

    BMW X5 E53 engine modifications

    The most common engine in the X5 is a naturally aspirated 3-liter gasoline engine - M54B30. This engine is reliable and unpretentious, it can easily move off almost 300 thousand km without requiring repair. But in 4.4-liter engines, cranking of the liners and the occurrence of scoring on the cylinder walls closer to 250 thousand km was noted. Engine overhaul often exceeds the cost of a "used" engine in good condition (but some specialists can clog the damaged cylinder, which will significantly reduce the cost of repairs). This must be taken into account if you are going to "capital" the motor of the X-fifth.

    2000 BMW X5

    All X-5 gasoline engines have inherent problems. The first of them is the failure of the crankcase ventilation valve. The valve channels are gradually clogged, in winter they also accumulate condensate, which freezes in cold weather and the oil begins to squeeze out through the dipstick hole. And if you do not detect this problem in time, then the motor will experience oil starvation. Later, the manufacturer modified this valve, but it was not possible to completely solve the problem. The only way out is to periodically replace the valve and tubes.

    The coolant reservoir cap of the X5 is a consumable item. The cover has a built-in valve that monitors the working pressure in the cooling system. But the valve has a certain resource and becomes jammed over time, which can even rupture the expansion tank. It is also worthwhile to periodically monitor and timely change the automatic transmission thermostat, which is in a plastic case, which collapses over time.

    Closer to the 250 thousandth run, you can hear a significant noise emitted by the Vanos timing system. On a cold engine, it makes a roar, and after starting the sound of a working gasoline engine is similar to a diesel one, a certain vibration appears.

    Hydraulic compensators and crankshaft position sensors, camshaft, mass air flow sensor, thermostat and water pump will last more than 250,000 km.

    After about 150 thousand kilometers, the engine starts to increase oil consumption. One of the reasons for this is the worn valve stem seals that need to be replaced for this run.

    The catalyst dies off after 150 thousand kilometers. The three-liter American X5 contains a catalytic converter purge system. So, her motor fails after 100 thousand kilometers. In this case, it is cheaper to dismantle the system and reflash the engine ECU.

    After 250-300 thousand kilometers, the fuel pump usually needs to be replaced, and the diesel pump may need to be replaced with the main one.

    The three-liter turbocharged diesel is inferior in reliability to the gasoline 3.0, but surpasses the 4.4 and 4.6 engines. The turbine will easily survive 150 thousand km before being repaired. The pressure converter of a turbocharger lives about the same as a turbine. If the engine of your diesel X5 starts to work intermittently, then the boost pressure sensor may be out of order or the tightness of the pipes leading to the intercooler has disappeared.

    On the three-liter X5, both diesel and gasoline, a manual transmission could be installed. Such a complete set is very rare, but the "mechanics" on them are quite reliable.

    The first generation of the X5 was equipped with a GM gearbox for 3-liter engines and a ZF gearbox for 4.4-liter engines and large volumes. Automatic machines handle up to 300 thousand km of run, but on powerful 4.8 the box is rented out much earlier. The first symptoms of a dying gearbox are jolts during gear changes. Box repair consists of replacing solenoids and oil. Approximately 90% of such automatic transmission repairs give a positive result. If replacing the solenoids did not help, and the tremors still remained, then the automatic transmission clutches must be replaced.

    The torque converter can fail closer to 300,000 km. It can be either replaced or repaired. Repair will cost 4-5 times cheaper than replacement. GM gearboxes may require replacement of the oil pump. But new ones are no longer produced - you will have to look for used ones. Also, these gearboxes may leak hoses between the box and the radiator.

    The first problems with the transfer case can arise at a mileage close to 250 thousand km. Usually they are caused by an extended chain, and this is manifested by a bang. It is not worth tightening with the replacement of the chain, otherwise the cardan will also have to be changed (its splines will quickly wear out).

    On diesel X5, the problem of failure of the front gearbox is often noted. It cannot be repaired. Usually car owners are looking for used ones.

    With the passage of time, the cardan begins to play, and this manifests itself in the form of jerks when the automatic transmission selector is moved from the “drive” position to the “parking” position. It is treated by replacing the crosses.

    Failure of the front drive shafts is a frequent problem. The front hub bearings run almost 200 thousand.

    On the X5, in addition to the usual, air suspension was installed. The air suspension could be on both axles or only on the rear. Air bags serve almost 200 thousand km, and fail mainly due to the constantly falling dirt on them. If you thoroughly periodically wash the pneumatic elements, then their resource will be significantly increased. The front pneumatic struts are non-collapsible, the pillow has to be changed together with the rack. But the cushions on the back can be changed separately. The weak points of such a suspension are considered to be the receiver valve block, the suspension control unit and the body position sensors.

    The resource of the levers is about 150 thousand km. The wear of the upper wishbones will expose the wheels of your X5 to a "house"; the wheels will become the same "house" due to the wear of the floating silent blocks and the silent blocks of the lower arms.

    The steering rack is generally reliable, play is rare. The rubber squeak that appears when you turn the steering wheel is caused by wear on the steering gimbals. It is treated with abundant lubrication.

    Closer to 300 thousand km, ABS sensors may fail, much less often the ABS unit itself fails. Front brake hoses serve approximately 250 thousand km.

    The body of the BMW X5 is quite strong and resists corrosion well. The paintwork of the car is quite thick, and is not afraid of the effects of an aggressive environment. On cars with decent mileage, you can find chips on the hood, on the front bumper and on the grille. The first corrosion can be found on vehicles over 10 years old under the seal at the bottom of the doors.

    Closer to 10 years of operation, there are cases of failure of the drive of external mirrors. Specialized services provide services for their restoration, which is much cheaper than buying a new drive. There are frequent cases of tearing off the outer handles in frosts after a car wash. The reason is the frozen door lock and the weak plastic frame of the handle. As a preventive measure, it is possible to recommend the treatment of locks and handle mechanisms with silicone grease.

    The panoramic sunroof may stop working after 5-7 years of operation. This is due to the skew and breakage of the rear sash. The wear of the sunroof guide can also cause knocking in the passenger compartment. The drainage of the hatch must be periodically cleaned, otherwise water will begin to penetrate into the interior over time. The mechanisms for lifting window panes in such years also begin to suffer due to wear on the cables, guides and failure of the drive motor.

    The license plate light stops working over time due to rotten contacts closer to seven years of operation. Because of this, the trunk opening button stops working. Oxidized contacts can also cause problems in the operation of the rear lights. It is treated in all cases by soldering or replacing.

    The interior of the car is very solid, there are no squeaks in it. But not everything is so smooth. On cars over 6 years old, the fabric upholstery on the A-pillars begins to exfoliate. It is solved either by replacing or gluing the upholstery on the racks.

    If pixels on the dashboard display begin to be lost, then it is necessary to re-solder the corresponding cable. An audio failure can be caused by a burned-out radio module or amplifier (both located in the trunk).

    Sometimes the air conditioner fan can run out of trouble, which needs to be replaced (a relatively expensive thing - a control board is built into the case). Sometimes the processor cooler on the climate control board can crack. In this case, you just need to lubricate it. If the fan speed of the stove starts to float, then the corresponding resistor needs to be replaced - popularly known as a "hedgehog". It should be borne in mind that a quick discharge of the battery can also occur due to a faulty "hedgehog".

    When using the X5, it is important to monitor the battery charge level. Its low level at the moment the engine is started can display various errors. If the battery has stopped charging, then most likely the generator brushes have worn out. When replacing the brushes, it will be useful to replace the two bearings of the generator.

    In general, the X5 in the 53rd body is not as terrible as it is painted. If you have straight enough hands, if you know where and how to look for relevant information on the Internet, then you can fully service this car yourself, which will avoid many unnecessary costs. To repair this car, it is not at all necessary to purchase only original expensive spare parts and consumables. Car dealerships are now full of decent quality analogs. The car has been studied up and down by motorists, so there is more than enough information on its maintenance and repair on specialized forums and sites.

    It is clear that the repair at the "officials" requires significant financial costs, which gives rise to rumors about the extreme high cost of maintenance and repair of the X5. Do not buy a car with your last money and do not buy a car from someone who bought it with your last money. Such comrades usually mercilessly exploited the X5, not caring at all and not spending (after all, there was nothing to spend) on its maintenance and timely repairs, which led to the "stupidity" of the instance. Before buying such a car, always carry out its comprehensive diagnostics. The identified shortcomings are a reason to significantly reduce the price, and the performance of this machine is usually restored after additional investments.

    As a conclusion, it should be said that this car is very reliable, with appropriate high-quality service, it can please its owner for a long time. If you do not use the services of official services, and be smart about the choice of spare parts and consumables for it, then it will not empty your pocket as much as everyone is talking about.
