Driving through Olympia National Park in Washington State

In 2016, before moving to the US, I ordered a Tesla Model X 60D. It was delivered in December. I drove it daily for six months between business trips.

The total mileage was 7.5 thousand kilometers in and around Seattle. I went mainly to meetings in the city, to nature and snowboarding. It is important to understand that traffic jams in Seattle are almost the same as in Moscow.

Equipment

The 60D model received a 75 kilowatt-hour battery (equivalent to the 75D model), but the company limits the figures to 60 kilowatt-hours through software. The charge is enough for 320 km. For $ 4.5 thousand, you can unlock the full capabilities of the battery.

The car is equipped with five seats. You can take a model with two additional seats in the trunk or one extra between the seats in the back.

It seems to me that the option with six seats is the most comfortable for a family with three children.

Autopilot 2.0

This is how the first generation of iron sees the road - one camera and sensors

Tesla's first generation of autopilot had a third-party system from Mobileye that Intel bought. Later, Elon Musk's company decided to develop their own system, in which eight cameras and "the possibility of complete autonomy."

The new hardware still performs worse than the first version, if we talk about normal driving. For example, the solution does not see motorcycles.

But the autopilot with the current software proved itself in bad weather. When the first hardware refuses to work and keep track of the distance of the cars in front (for example, in a snowfall), the second generation hardware copes with this task.

The second generation of the autopilot has many more sensors and eight cameras

Updates

Initially, the car was completely dumb - no autopilot or automatic cruise control.

Tesla began to produce a new generation of iron, sell cars with it and collect data. It was a very fun game to follow Musk's Twitter as he talked about the rollout of new software. All owners of new cars were waiting for updates and testing new features.

First, the company launched automatic cruise control. Then Tesla gave the car the ability to drive on certain roads and eventually achieved "pairing" in features with the first generation of hardware. It's like updating phones.

Recently there was an update that turned the car into a brick (large and motionless). I had to do a factory reset and reinstall the firmware.

Driving

The Model X is a healthy truck that is two meters wide without mirrors. It fits my snowboard without having to fold down the rear seats of the car. At the same time, it is surprising that the car (the most basic model) does any Porsche from the start.

Even more surprised when you enter the turn. The center of gravity is low due to the flat battery at the bottom of the machine. It "sticks" to the road and does not shift weight to the side, as is usually the case with large and tall SUVs.

I accelerated to 145 kilometers per hour. It is comfortable to drive at a speed of 65-70 kilometers per hour. When you go fast, you feel a strong wind and noise from the road.

German owners say that it is not worth accelerating on autobahns over 150 kilometers per hour - the battery overheats and becomes inefficient.

In Europe, I periodically need to travel through Germany and there it is very convenient to be able to accelerate to 220 kilometers per hour. Autobahns are not yet efficient for driving a Tesla.

Annoying moments

While writing this part of the article, I tried to come up with more negative things about driving:

  • I asked for an early start of the automatic cruise control. Was in the first thousand to test this feature. On the highway, he counted two bridges as trucks. In specific places, it began to slow down sharply, it was wildly scary.
  • Asked for an early rollout of the autopilot. Also appeared in the first thousand for the test. In the first iteration, they gave speeds up to 55 kilometers per hour and only on certain roads. The car could not cope with intersections, where it is necessary to “catch” the marking lines behind the intersection. That is, the line for which he clings disappeared and it was necessary to look further and look for it. As a result, the car drove into the oncoming lane. Now the function works fine and tries to use the car in front as a reference.
  • Winter driving on this model is a challenge. This is mainly due to the low battery capacity. For winter, you need to have at least 90 kilowatt-hours, since the battery consumption during its heating is strong. And without a winter package (steering wheel heating, additional window heating and heated front seats are by default), I had to spend 20 minutes clearing the car of ice. Since there is no motor that warms up the front of the body, you have to scrape everything by hand.
  • Automatic doors. You have to get used to them. They open automatically at the push of a button on the door. Once, they almost opened into the car so that it drove quickly past.

Miscellaneous

Riding with one pedal. Brakes are rarely used on electric machines. You let off the gas and the car starts to regenerate energy by braking - to rotate the motor back through kinetic energy.

In simple terms - let off the gas, and the car slows down without using the brake discs. You quickly get used to riding with one pedal. When there is complete control over traction, it comes out intuitively. The brake is used for a full stop. At the same time, when the autopilot is turned on, the car brakes automatically.

Huge view inside the cabin

Voice control. " Tesla, play Beastie Boys" - and the machine generates a playlist like Spotify. Unlike all machines in which this never works properly, for me Tesla has a 90% success rate. Both navigation and music, everything works through voice.

Suspension memory. Tesla has five suspension height options. The car remembers which option was on and automatically adjusts: "I remember that on this highway you want super-low, please."

Useful for parking in garages where you need to set higher, or on winding roads where you need to set lower.

I use autopilot all the time. On long trips, I sit and watch YouTube playlists. The autopilot really works, and you don't have to worry about traffic jams or that you accidentally run into someone when braking hard.

In America, the lifestyle is to be stuck in traffic on the highway. I would be very annoyed if not for the autopilot. If you see on the display that the car sees at least one line, activate the cruise control and drive off.

Long journeys are real. Superchargers are already appearing in the Baltic States and Russia, and in the US they are installed everywhere. Just instead of a five-minute filling of fuel, you need to allocate 20-30 minutes to fully charge the battery.

We are talking about Tesla Superchargers. Navigation in the car decides where and when you need to stop for charging, you don’t have to worry. The main thing is not to argue with it, since the system considers the height of the road, which is not visible on the map.

Parking sensors are not just for parking. Sensors constantly analyze all areas around the machine. For example, the steering wheel will resist if I try to sharply turn it into an obstacle.

When you drive slowly, the system automatically shows the obstacles around. Insanely useful for a big car. No need to think about turning on the sensors. It is clear that the rear ones turn on automatically and there is a parking camera. But while driving through parking lots, all the sensors around help.

Falcon doors. It looks cool, but in practice it is also useful. The rear doors open up, and many times I wanted to manually stop them with the thought “now it will hit the car or the ceiling.” But never had a problem.

The driver's door is locked with a brake. A trifle, but you get used to it. Sat down, pressed the brake and the door closed.

Automatic parking. If there is a parking space nearby, the car automatically detects it and offers to get up. A magical feeling when you drive slowly, looking for a place, thinking about whether the car will fit. And he says: “Yes, I’ll get in! Do you want to park?"

Works for parallel and regular parking. True, I once manually pressed the brake when entering backwards - I did not believe that it would not hurt.

Summon function. If the parking space is narrow, you can get out of the car, take out your phone and tell the car to drive ahead. Works with sensors.

Separately, it must be said that the car is so wide that it does not automatically pass into my garage. There remains two centimeters from each mirror, and does not want to pass even through Summon.

In Holland, I learned how to park big cars in small places, so it's not a problem. But Tesla is really too big even for American garages.

Driving on snow. Quite comfortable. There is a function to disable Traction Control if stuck. I went up the hill after a snowfall without any problems. But I do not recommend driving through the fields.

There was a presentation of all-wheel drive versions of the Model S electric sedan - 60D, 85D and P85D. The cars received an additional electric motor on the front axle.

The weight distribution along the axes of electric vehicles is now 50:50. The weight of the model is 2239 kg (+ 132 kg).

Specifications

The P85D modification is equipped with a power plant consisting of two 470 hp electric motors. (on the rear axle) and 211 hp. (on the front axle). The total output of the installation is 691 hp. power and 930 Nm of thrust.

From 0 to 96 km / h, the P85D version accelerates in 3.2 seconds, which is almost a second faster than the previous most powerful modification (P85). The maximum speed of the model is 250 km/h (+40 km/h). The power reserve has increased by 16 km (up to 443 km).

photo of the back of the body

Versions 60D and 85D have a 188-horsepower electric motor on each axle. From 0 to 60 mph, the 60D accelerates in 5.7 seconds and the 85D in 5.2 seconds. The maximum speed for the 60D modification is 200 km/h, and for the version it is 250 km/h. On one battery charge, cars can travel 362 and 474 km, respectively.

Tesla also introduced a semi-autonomous control system that can "intercept the steering wheel" if the driver, for example, fell asleep or passed out. Autopilot receives data from multiple cameras and 360-degree sonar. Thanks to this system, the electric car will be able to move along a given lane in the stream, controlling the operation of the accelerator and brakes. The company said that cars equipped with the "autopilot" system will appear in 5-6 years.

Price

The all-wheel drive 2015 Tesla Model S P85D will start at $122,090. Sales will start in 2015.

Tesla Motors never ceases to amaze the automotive world with new products, expanding the range of electric cars previously released by the concern. This time around, we're talking about several model updates that Musk mentioned last February. In particular, all-wheel drive modifications of the S-ki - 60D, 85D and P85D. Previously, the fastest serial electric car in quarter-mile races was the P85 version. The new configuration of the Tesla Model S P85D overtakes its predecessor by half a second, showing a result of 11.8 s.

Tesla engineers achieved all-wheel drive by installing the DualMotor system, which means “two electric motors - on both axles of the car” (this is where this mysterious letter D comes from in the name of the new products). Moreover, in the case of the fastest variation of the S model, the distribution of traction on the axle looks very interesting and thoughtful: a motor of 224 horsepower and 331 Nm of torque to the front wheels and 476 hp. and 600 Nm - to the rear. This means that the total the power of the P85D is 700hp., and torque - 931Nm, while the predecessor of the performance version, respectively, has 412 hp. and 600Nm. nervously smoking on the sidelines ...
The company claims that the new Tesla Model S P85D hits 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, which is a very competitive result even for gasoline-powered sports cars. Top speed increased from 209 (P85) to 249 km/h (P85D).

Specifications Tesla Model S P85D

In addition to all-wheel drive, several top-end safety driving systems have been added to the new modifications of the Model S lineup. The car was equipped with a “smart” front camera and ultrasonic sensors, which undoubtedly help the driver to keep the car on the road. Also, it should be noted the implementation of the chip "stopandgo", which completely stops the electric car in front of the car in front.

Speaking about the other two versions (60D and 85D), it is worth noting that both cars are equipped with the same motors, 380 horsepower (190 per axle) and 490 Nm of torque. These two new items are distinguished only by electronic filling and weight - 2085 and 2188 kg, respectively.

The battery capacities indicated in the passport data remained the same. According to Tesla Motors engineers, all-wheel drive models will be able to travel a greater distance. They explained this phenomenon by a more voluminous recovery of energy in the battery during braking, due to an electric motor on the front axle.

The manufacturer's price for the P85D is just over $120,000. For this money, many convenient options appeared in the electric car:

  • autopilot
  • electric mirrors
  • air suspension
  • keyless entry
  • power tailgate
  • adaptive seats
  • many other nice things.

When it comes to the price of the models 60D and 85D, the new versions will cost only $4,000 more than the rear-wheel drive ones. This was a detailed review of the Tesla Model S P85D, where we tried to pay attention to all the features of the new powerful electric car from Tesla Motors.

For the first time, electric models began to be assembled at the end of the 19th century, but such machines could not gain popularity for a long time. Their main disadvantage, as you know, is a small power reserve.

And only relatively recently it was possible to significantly increase it, and therefore the number of fans of such vehicles has increased markedly over the past few years. In this regard, the company was marked by a real revolution. Tesla. After all, it is not for nothing that it bears the name of the outstanding Serbian scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla, and its strong point is the latest technologies.

In 2008, an open Tesla Roadster was born, which on one full charge is able to cover more than 320 kilometers. Five years later (in 2013), the Model S liftback joined him, whose cruising range without recharging increased to 425 kilometers, and now this liftback has undergone a light restyling and received a flagship version with the P85D index.

If we talk about the appearance of the Tesla Model S, then it was practically not affected. The car still attracts attention with its elegant exterior, from afar it can even be confused with.

The liftback has an elongated wedge-shaped silhouette with an arched coupe-like roof. The appearance of the car is dominated by graceful soft lines.

A large false radiator grill is a purely decorative body part, since the electric motor does not require air in a large volume. Both the headlights and taillights are LED. At the stern there is a small spoiler and a chrome molding.

Visually, the flagship version of the Tesla Model S P85D 2015 model year differs from the usual liftback with alloy wheels with a diameter of 21 inches.

The car is large - the length of its body reaches 497.6 centimeters, and the length of the wheelbase rests on the mark of 295.9 centimeters. In addition, the car is very wide - 196.3 centimeters, but its height does not exceed 143.5 centimeters.

The liftback looks very fast, it has excellent aerodynamics - the drag coefficient is only about 0.24 Cx. It is worth noting that the curb weight of the electric vehicle has increased to 2239 kilograms.

But on the other hand, he has a too strong body structure, he passed a series of crash tests without any problems at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and not at 64, as required by EuroNCAP safety standards.

Access to the interior of the Tesla Model S P85D 2015 takes place in a rather interesting way. The door handles are recessed, but when the driver approaches the car, they recognize the key in his pocket and "leave" automatically.

The interior of the car shows the triumph of the latest technology in all its glory. The ceiling is completely transparent, which is why there is always a lot of light. In the interior design, engineers used environmentally friendly genuine leather, which was not treated with toxic chemicals, as well as recycled plastic.

The three-spoke steering wheel has a sporty feel, with a flat rim at the bottom and comfortable grips. The traditional instrument panel is replaced by a color display that displays data from the speedometer, battery charge gauge and on-board computer readings.

Another huge screen with a diagonal of 17 inches is located on the center console, which, by the way, is slightly turned towards the driver's side.

In fact, this is an integrated tablet with a color touch screen that replaces the air conditioning and music system control units. It also displays data from the navigation system. Internet access is also offered.

The front row seats in the 2015 Tesla Model S P85D are large and comfortable. Like the steering column, they are equipped with electrical adjustments with a memory function already in the initial equipment version. In addition, there is also a seat heating function.

Landing is very low, and the stern is raised, so the rear-view camera proposed by the automaker will be very useful.

As for the rear row of seats, there is enough legroom there, as well as headroom. The interior of the electric car is very wide, and therefore three adult passengers will be accommodated on the back sofa without any discomfort.

Moreover, for an additional fee, two more seats are offered, which can be installed in the luggage compartment of the liftback by turning them 180 degrees. However, these seats are intended for children or passengers of small stature.

Note that even in the seven-seat modification, about 150 liters of luggage can be squeezed into the luggage compartment of the Tesla Model S P85D 2015. In the standard five-seater cabin layout, the luggage compartment capacity is a solid 745 liters, and with the second row seats folded down, it increases to 1645 liters.

By the way, they decided to abandon the trunk in front of the electric car. And for the tailgate, an electric drive is available as an option.

The liftback has a fairly rich basic equipment, there is a dual-zone air conditioning system, power accessories, a keyless entry system, a rain sensor, cruise control, a 200 W music system with a CD radio, Bluetooth support, a tire pressure sensor, a stabilization system, and also eight airbags, of which two are front for the knees.

Additional options include 360-degree cameras and a more powerful 580-watt music system.

The main difference between the restyled Tesla Model S 2015 liftback is the presence of two electric motors at once. An additional electric motor was placed in front of the car (it is installed in place of the disappeared front trunk).

Its power in the P85D modification reaches 221 horsepower, and the engine in the rear produces 470 horsepower. That is, in total, the output of two electric motors is 691 horsepower, and this is a very decent indicator.

Peak torque also reaches a solid mark of 930 Newtons per meter and is already available from low revs. And therefore, claims are unlikely to arise for the lack of traction. An electric car does not require a classic multi-speed gearbox - a single-speed transmission is enough.

Electric motors are almost silent, only the readings on the instrument panel “give out” their work. The dynamic characteristics of the Tesla Model S P85D 2015 liftback are not inferior to those of sports cars with internal combustion engines. The electric car accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds.

At the same time, confident smooth acceleration lasts somewhere up to 160 km / h. A car travels 400 meters from a place in 11.8 seconds. In addition, the automaker has increased the top speed of its liftback to 250 kilometers per hour.

Note that the second electric motor is also offered as an additional option in other versions of the car, only it produces a little less power - 188 horsepower.

We add that each of these electric motors is designed for different axes. That is, it turns out that the model is equipped with a kind of all-wheel drive system. As a result, such a liftback is not only faster, but also has better grip on the road surface.

As mentioned above, the engineers did not disregard the range of the car. In this regard, the model could boast of record performance before, and now the results have improved even more.

So, the Tesla Model S P85D 2015 liftback with a lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 85 kW / h is able to travel about 440 kilometers on one full charge, and a more affordable option with 60 kW / h batteries can now cover up to 360 kilometers.

To charge the batteries, a network of 110, 220 and 480 volts is suitable, while in the third case it will take only about 45 minutes to charge. Taking into account electricity prices in the United States and Europe, it can be said that the cost of recharging the batteries will be in line with the cost of conventional fuel at a consumption of about 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

For lovers of long journeys, the company is establishing its own network of charging stations around the world. Now there are almost three hundred of them in different regions of the world. It is worth noting that the navigation system indicates the location of such charging stations on its maps.

In addition, the batteries are installed in the Tesla Model S P85D 2015 so that, if necessary, they can be replaced in about three minutes. This suggests that in the near future it will be possible to simply change “empty” batteries for charged ones and not interrupt the trip for a long time.

The batteries are located on the bottom under the passenger compartment and lower the center of gravity, and this, in turn, improves the handling of the electric vehicle. Heavy and large Tesla Model S P85D 2015 has surprisingly good maneuverability. In corners, he is obedient and practically does not roll.

The liftback steering is too light and not very informative, which is the fault of the installed electric power. However, the directional stability of the electric car is at a good level. The model received an air suspension, and therefore the ride, even with discs with a diameter of 21 inches, is quite comfortable and not very hard.

The standard ride height of the car is 12.1 centimeters, but at high speeds the clearance is reduced by 1.8 centimeters (up to 10.3 cm), and if necessary, it can, on the contrary, rise by 3.1 centimeters (up to 15.2 cm).

The Tesla Model S P85D 2015 liftback received Brembo ventilated disc brakes on all wheels. The diameter of the front discs is 40.5 cm, the rear - 38 cm. In addition, the car is equipped with a brake energy recovery system. To stop completely from a speed of 100 km / h, the car needs a 34.5-meter stretch of road.

And at the end of our review, let's talk about prices. The 2015 Tesla Model S liftback costs at least $60,000 in the North American market, and the most expensive P85D version is valued at least $105,000.

And although the car cannot be called cheap, there are already plenty of applications for it. This is one of the most successful electric vehicles in the world, and the company has already sold about 50,000 copies.

So, unnoticed by many, we suddenly found ourselves on the next round of the unwinding spiral of the development of the world - with a different transport, and a completely different order of things in cities and on the roads.

Sometimes evolutionary development, going slowly, and sometimes bright innovators come with a bright vision of what the world will be like and a strong intention to realize this vision. And surprisingly, they are starting to create change at the level of established world systems.

Last Friday, I watched an unofficial broadcast from the Tesla "D" show in California and experienced a gamut of feelings from joy to admiration. And it's not about the new product of an innovative industry leader, it's about all the conceptual and engineering beauty of what is happening and the presentation of far-reaching consequences.

Elon Musk again pushed the border beyond the expected.

What happened? Few details.

The best car in the world Tesla Model S received its first upgrade of the hardware platform and the suffix "D" in the name. D stands for Dual Motor. Yes, this is how Tesla solves the questions: Do you want four-wheel drive? Let's add a second motor!

The electric motor is compact, simple, almost silent and does not require a bunch of additional units, like a gasoline engine - which makes it possible to install a separate motor for each axle. A radical rejection of the legacy of the past provides opportunities for unexpected solutions.

Eventually:

At the last point, many are wondering - how did the consumption decrease?

Any "regular car", with the addition of all-wheel drive, begins to consume more fuel and often slows down in understeer. In Tesla, all complex and unnecessary interface elements are absent (gearbox, transfer case, shafts ..), the motors are controlled by wires, the power of each is regulated with millisecond accuracy. Mechanical losses and delays are negligible. As a result, the computer distributes the load on the motors so that they always work in the optimal mode, save energy, and improve controllability.

It is difficult to briefly and popularly explain all the engineering beauty of what is happening. It's not about the speed of acceleration, it's about the amazing opportunities that appear due to the radicalism and uncompromisingness in creating a new type of transport.

But that's not all. I remember well how unrealistic it sounded a year and a half ago, when Musk said “by 2015 we will make an autopilot” ... And they did!

Tesla has radar , sonar and hires video cameras . And now all this is used as an autopilot system and perfect active safety.

Tesla now:

The machine analyzes dangerously approaching objects and tries to avoid a collision. If desired, the driver can force her to go in any direction, but by default the car will choose a safe path.

All this is added to the fact that the Model S is already, according to all crash tests, the safest passenger car in the world.

And after all, the charms of the autopilot are just beginning:

What takes a decade for experienced but conservative auto concerns (bringing a novelty from a promise and a prototype to a series), Tesla, a “newcomer company”, takes a year. Moreover, in parallel with the introduction of dozens of other innovations.

Some people say: "The parking assistant is now being put on Fords." It is important to understand that here we are talking about things of a different order. Tesla is not a set of functional features. This is a holistic radically innovative platform and strength in the integration of all its elements. When the calendar feature was added, all existing parking assists immediately became obsolete. And this happens in every direction that Tesla develops.

* A week ago, I once watched how the latest software update (v 6.0) was downloaded to Tesla with the functionality of synchronizing the calendar with the phone. I thought then “well, a small but convenient feature”. And suddenly, *waving the paw of an industrial robot*, an autopilot is added to the calendar and something from a science fiction movie turns out ... Everything Tesla does is not easy

Tesla Model S is not a car, it is a platform for a completely new mode of transport.

With each update, the platform becomes stronger and more unattainable from the standpoint of the technologies of the last century. The gap is growing.

And when you look at the next step in the development of the platform, curiosity flares up: what visionary tricks from the future Elon has saved for the next year.

A bright future awaits us.
