Hello dear and dear readers! We continue to delight you with new and, I hope, useful materials. This time let's talk about repairing dents without painting.

Alas, but in a large and fairly cramped city such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Kazan or Yekaterinburg, for example, where the flow of cars is very impressive, it is not difficult to collide with other cars or get hit on the body. Although in cities such as Tomsk, Voronezh, Kirov, Samara, Krasnoyarsk, Penza, or even in Tula, there are no fewer customers at service stations who turn to remove dents.

I myself have repeatedly tested the body of my car. And sometimes the fault was completely on me, and sometimes other drivers openly hurt me and did not even apologize. Well, this is already a question of the past. What was I doing then? When there were Zhiguli, I took a heavier hammer and just hit the metal from the inside. Frankly speaking, the leveling was not very good. But there was no choice, because I could not afford the cost of repairs at the service station.

Already, being the owner of a more expensive car, I stopped using this artisanal barbaric method. But I learned about PDR technology. This is a method of removing dents without painting, which was originally called Paintless Dent Repair.

In our country, the technology began to be actively used only recently, although in their homeland, in Europe and the United States, they have been resisting dents in this way for more than 50 years. Therefore, it was decided to tell you in detail about this method, our dear readers.

Features and Benefits

From the very beginning of its existence, PDR technology was extremely simple and did not allow to eliminate serious defects on the body. Over time, it has been improved, so now you can cope with fairly large dents and restore the previous quality of the body metal without damaging the paint layer.

The method is extremely simple, since now there is a special tool for it, a full-fledged set of devices. Some even decided to buy it for themselves, using it in a garage with their own hands.

But frankly, to eliminate small dents, you can tempt fate and try to do everything yourself. But the technology has its own characteristics, the craftsmen undergo special training for the highest quality car restoration. You can practice on cars that you do not mind. And so it is advised to entrust the process to specialists, whose address it will not be difficult to find in your city.

The main advantages of PDR technology include:

  • no need for painting work after removing the dent;
  • little time spent on repair and removal of defects;
  • easy-to-perform local body repair;
  • a small number of stages required to carry out the work;
  • affordable price, which is noticeably lower compared to traditional straightening, where additional painting is required;
  • maximum preservation of the quality of the paintwork on the car body;
  • no need to look for paint in accordance with the color of the body.

But do not naively think that this is a magical method that allows you to carry out body repairs with one movement of your hand. The technology has its own nuances and certain limitations.

Important points

The essence of the method is based on the impact of pressure and pulling the dent. This restores the original body geometry where the damage occurred.

The PDR technique has several subtypes. The choice in favor of one or another option depends on the degree of damage, the depth and size of the dent. When removing small dents, the simplest set of tools is used, but with serious defects, more expensive and complex equipment is needed.

There is an important BUT. It is not possible to apply paint-free body repair in all cases. There are situations that make this kind of work impossible. These include:

  • severe deformation of the body has led to the formation of cracks and creases;
  • the age of the machine is more than 15 years (the metal is tired, therefore the restoration of the PDR method may not help);
  • poor quality paintwork (from the factory or after repainting by the car owner himself), due to which the layer may come off as a result of metal pulling;
  • the damaged area was previously repaired using the conventional straightening method using a hammer, putty and paint.

Limitations on the use of PDR technology

Reviews of some car owners sometimes amaze me. They bought themselves PDR tools and think that now they will restore literally everything. In fact, you must first study in detail the features of the technology and its capabilities, and only then complain about the lack of results.

This I mean that there are some areas of the car body, on which the application of the PDR method will be meaningless and ineffective due to objective reasons.

  1. Luggage frame, bonnet and door edges. PDR is not relevant, since it is impossible to get to the dents from the back side.
  2. There are limitations on the restoration of thresholds, since these elements have a pair of walls. You cannot get to them from the back side. But if there are no creases, straightening is possible.
  3. Roof pillars with sharp creases. They also cannot be restored in case of dents formation by a paint-free method.
  4. Defects and distortions that have formed after indirect effects on the body.

But remember, if the paintwork is preserved at the damaged places, it has no creases or cracks, and everything is in order with the body geometry, then the PDR will be an excellent repair assistant.

Metal has a memory, which is what this technique is based on. With the help of tools, the master, as it were, helps the body remember how the details were located before the impact or accident, what the geometry was. It may sound a little strange, but it is.

PDR types

PDR is just a general concept that involves the use of several different techniques for paint-free removal of dents on a car body.

If you look at the photos and videos related to PDR, then you can see that specialists use different types of devices. I suggest you get to know them better. They are all based on mechanical stress, but use different assistive devices.

  1. Percussion. Percussion is a versatile method and is the simplest variation on PDR. Everyone can use it even at home. The parts that can be removed are the easiest to tap out. The front side must be protected and covered with something, and the manipulations themselves with a hammer or similar tool are carried out from the wrong side. The disadvantage of this method is the complexity of its implementation. Plus, only minor defects can be eliminated by tapping.
  2. Hair dryer and compressed cold air. Industrial equipment is used, not a simple household hair dryer. Its task is to heat the metal and make it ductile. Gaining a certain freedom in movement, the metal recalls its previous form. After heating, you must immediately direct a stream of cold compressed air from the cylinder to the dent. Its temperature is about -78 degrees. Temperature shock, that is, a sharp drop, helps to straighten the metal. Therefore, this type of PDR is often referred to as heat shock.
  3. Magnet. Allows you to deal with small defects. In order not to damage the paintwork, a soft material is placed between it and the magnet. It is important to start moving from the edge and go gradually towards the center, pulling the metal towards you. If you have a sufficiently powerful magnet, you can do it yourself with defects on the car body.
  4. Compressed air. This is a vacuum method and requires the proper tools. The essence of the method is in a strong pressure drop. You need to find the center of the damage, install a vacuum suction cup on this area, activate it and pull it sharply in the direction opposite to the dent. For more complex defects, a lever is applied to the metal in parallel from below.
  5. Applicator with glue. To get rid of a dent, you need a mini lifter, an applicator and a hot melt glue. The lifter is useful for pulling out the dent by clinging to the applicator glued to the glue. After the procedure, the glue is removed using chemicals. It is important here that the chemistry does not turn out to be too aggressive and does not destroy the paintwork.

As you can see, dear friends, this is a good way to cope with the unpleasant consequences of accidents, collisions, and objects falling on your car. It is impossible to keep track of your car and prevent any damage. So I, for example, just loaded a stroller into the trunk, and in the end left an impressive dent on the body. And the PDR technique helped me out.

    In large cities with busy traffic, minor damage to the body from minor collisions is common. To repair the dent thus obtained, it is usually necessary to carry out, among other things, painting work. In this case, the original factory paintwork of the machine body suffers.

    Many motorists, in order not to spoil the coating, agree to drive through the city streets for a long time in a car with a damaged body. They will be pleased to know that now they have the opportunity to quickly get rid of the traces of these unpleasant "kisses" on the body of their car. At the same time, not even the slightest trace will remain from the dent, and the paintwork will not suffer at all.

    PDR technology (DOL)

    Paintless Dent Repair (in Russian - removing dents without painting) is a relatively new service for the Russian market, provided by some car services. But those who managed to use it were very pleased with the result.

    This method was proposed back in the distant 50s by the German Oskar Flyge. PDR was used by Mercedes-Bens. The spread of this technology in those years was hampered by several factors at once: secrecy, high cost of equipment, high metal thickness used by the then auto industry to create bodies.

    In the 90s of the last century, these barriers disappeared and PDR began to spread throughout Europe and the United States.

    With minimal time and consumables, this technology has a tremendous effect. Therefore, perhaps she is destined to replace the rest of the ways to eliminate minor dents in the car body.

    The essence of technology

    The process of paint-free removal of dents consists in the fact that levers of various configurations are introduced into the technological holes of the machine under the body. These levers, controlled by a technician, apply pressure to the dent from the inside of the body. Also, additional methods are used that "pull" the dents from the outside. To do this, a special fungus is glued to the dent site. By pulling back this fungus, the craftsman evens out the dent. The special glue used for this is removed from the surface of the car without leaving any traces.

    When performing these works, putty or straightening is not used. This technology allows you to restore the body to its original factory look, completely removing all traces of dents, without resorting to painting the damaged area. Thus, the appearance of the car is restored completely.

    PDR technology can be applied to restore the geometry of car body parts only when the dent did not damage the original paintwork. This is the only condition that allows for paint-free restoration of the geometry of machine parts.

    PDR, due to the use of fewer consumables than other dent repair technologies, is a more profitable method in terms of economy. In addition, paint-free repairs take significantly less time than paint repairs. A small dent left in an easily accessible place can be repaired in just 15 minutes. Of course, this is the easiest case. But even the most difficult repairs (large dents, hard-to-reach places) using PRD technology will take no more than 2-4 hours. For motorists, this is a definite plus - there is no need to part with your vehicle for a long time.

    Ntool selection for PDR technology

    As for the cost, it is reduced by about two times, compared to the price at which the repair of a similar damage using traditional technology will come out. The selection of the right paint and varnish material and its application on the body is quite an expensive pleasure. Situations are not uncommon when the required paint is not available at a service station or in a car service. In these cases, it is sometimes necessary to wait several weeks for the necessary materials to arrive.

    In addition, this procedure requires replacing part of the factory coating. And the presence of repainted parts in the design of the car significantly reduces the cost of the car when it is resold. Even if it turns out to perfectly match the paint and varnish composition, and the externally painted place will not stand out against the background of the entire body, there is a special device that determines the thickness of the paintwork, which is impossible to deceive. So the repainting of the damaged area will be noticeable anyway. This is another indispensable plus of PDR technology for a car owner who needed to fix a dent.

    Also, PDR technology usually does not require dismantling of car body parts. Only in exceptional situations (when there is no physical opportunity to get close to the damaged elements) such a need arises. Less likelihood of compromising the integrity of the factory assembly is another advantage of paint-free dent removal.

What is PDR Technology?

How does paint-free dent removal equipment work?

Unfortunately, every car owner, even the most accurate one, sooner or later faces such an obvious problem as a dent. It can be a dent from flying debris on the road, from sloppy parking, falling snow from a roof, or from natural disasters such as hail. Does not matter! The fact remains that there is a small dent, but I don't want to paint it in any way. Yes, and they ask for a lot of money for this, and to paint the whole detail ... In general, some frustration.

But technology is evolving, including body repair. So, imagine for a second that you can not paint a dent, but simply squeeze it out. Don't believe me? Let me tell you the story of such an exciting technology for removing dents without painting called Paintless Dent Repair (PDR or PDR in Russian).

The history of PDR technology

This story began back in the 60s. Oskar Flyg and Enrichh Nussle were employees of the Mercedes plant. During the next exhibition, they repaired cars. which were damaged by visitors during the exhibition. Oscar Flyg squeezed out small dents with a hammer handle, preparing the car for painting, but he managed to do it so skillfully that no further painting was required (up to this point, all body defects required painting). This was one of the first applications of this technology on painted elements and became the starting point in its development.

Of course, at the moment the technology does not stand still, and how the tools looked before and what the technology now consists of are two different things. So, what the technology looks like now and what systems it includes:

Hook system

The first system we see is the (most obvious) hook system. When working with hooks, the dent is straightened by the method of acting on the defect from the inside of the part (squeezing out the dent).

Adhesive system

The next, the most popular self-study among beginners among beginners to remove dents without painting, is the glue system, one of the simplest. The glue system includes such components as glue, glue adapter, reverse hammer, minilifter, reverse hammer and many other auxiliary tools. In this case, the dent is straightened by the method of acting on the part from the outside, in other words, gluing into the dent. One of the top tools in this system is cold glue, which is very popular with experienced craftsmen.

Settling system

Of course, when squeezing and pulling out a dent, you may encounter the fact that bumps appear, peak pluses. The settling system is designed to remove these excess bulges. During upsetting, cores, stemmers, and blending hammers are actively used. The upsetting system works by tapping pricks, that is, impact from the outside.

Blending

Blending is a subsystem of upsetting, the impact on the dent from the outside by the method of upsetting pricks at a distance, due to which the dent is lifted.

Overvoltage system

The next system is the overvoltage system. It includes trowels and counter supports or lifting pads. It works by striking the trowel on the tangential surface of the metal with the creation of a stop on the inside of the dent.

Accessories for PDR

For comfortable work, you certainly cannot do without the widest component - these are accessories. This includes such important and irreplaceable equipment as various fasteners, scotch tape, stops, puffs, screens, nozzles, plugs and much, much more.

Device for removing dents without painting

An innovative solution when working with cars with a large area of minor damage, for example, after hail, is the device for induction impact on the dent. The Swiss made THOT Box induction device has established itself as the most reliable and convenient in operation. The principle of operation of the inductor consists in a magnetic head and spot heating of the metal, due to which the dent is pulled out. The main advantage when removing a dent with an inductor is the absence of reinforcement work, since the effect on the defect is only from the outside of the part.

PDR dent removal lighting

Last but not least, one of the most important parts of a paintless dent removal kit is, of course, lighting. Why? Everything is very simple here, if you don’t see the defect, then you don’t fix it. At present, the German manufacturer Nussle has become a breakthrough in the light direction, namely a six-band lamp with an innovative diffuser and a tripod and control system thought out to the smallest detail. With reliable and professional light, you can see and fix even the smallest defect.

The main advantage technology is the fact that the dent is removed without painting the part, which means that during resale, no one can see that you had a dent, the car does not become a bat.

The second important point is repair speed and cost. On average, repairing one dent takes 15-30 minutes, which is much faster than even local painting. And the cost of repairs is several times less, since practically no consumables.

There is no risk of color mismatch, smudges and a thick layer of putty.

No special boxes required and a lot of space. One box is enough for the entire tool and for repairs.

Technology for removing dents without painting - these are new opportunities in body repair with a huge number of benefits for both customers and craftsmen.

The well-groomed appearance of a passenger car depends entirely on the condition of its body. And the dents that appeared on the hood, doors, roof significantly worsen the aesthetics of the vehicle.

Why do dents appear on the body? How to fix them? Traffic accidents, an accidental soccer ball hitting a car body, and even heavy hail can cause unsightly defects (depressions, small pits) to appear on the cab. It is unlikely that it will be possible to repair the damage on your own. It is better to turn to professionals and order such a service as PDR dent repair, performed in a specialized workshop. This technology of restoring the integrity of the bodywork has been used abroad since 1960. The founders of PDR technology - Oscar Delahoya and Enrichh Nussle - are employees of the Mercedes plant.

The popular PDR dent repair technology is an opportunity to:

  • repair the body element without further painting;
  • fast leveling speed (from 20 to 50 minutes),
  • complete preservation of the paintwork, which allows you to save on the painting procedure.

How is the restoration work carried out?

In the workshop, pdr dents are removed in several ways. A defect can be corrected both internally and externally, it all depends:

  • on the state of the paintwork,
  • the size of the defect,
  • the depth and location of the dent.

The technique is applicable for those damages up to 5 millimeters in size. Dents must be round in shape, without metal creases and damage to the paintwork.

Before starting work, the foreman carefully examines the defect, selects a PDR-tool with which you can remove the dent. Further, straightening is carried out using a whole set of specific tools with different configurations. These can be devices that differ from each other in length and thickness, some of them are equipped with soft nozzles, which prevents scratches when correcting a defect. When there is no way to get to a microdefect from the inside, a pdr glue system is used to pull out dents, helping to pull out the metal.

The service center experts have a wealth of experience, so they deal with the repair of dents as quickly as possible. Experts guarantee not only high speed, but also excellent quality of repairs. The customer of the service will be able to observe the process of restoring the body, being, directly, in the workshop. The company has low prices and friendly service!

Removing dents

Who among the motorists has not at least once encountered a minor traffic accident, as a result of which dents remain on the car body? The situation is extremely unpleasant - not only does the dent spoil the appearance of the car, but also, if the dent is not removed in time, the body will gradually undergo the negative effects of corrosion, since in any case the paint and varnish layer is broken, even if it is not visually visible ... To restore a damaged part and paint it again is quite costly, since it must be removed, repaired and fully painted.

Modern technologies of body repair

Paintless restoration

But thanks to modern technology, in most cases, you can get by with much "less blood". There is such a thing as paintless dent removal based on PDR (Paintless dent repair) technology, which implies vacuum stretching of the damaged area. This technology makes it possible to do without subsequent painting in 90% of cases, since the damaged area with the help of special equipment is "pulled out" for a long time, from 1 to 20 hours. This eliminates the deformation of the paintwork, since it can crack from a sharp change in the surface geometry.

Thanks to PDR technology, small dents in easily accessible parts of the body, such as the hood, fenders, doors, roof and so on, can be repaired not only without painting, but even without first dismantling the body part. Despite the fact that the procedure is quite long in time, it is still faster than restoring the body using the traditional method, since dismantling the part, cleaning the old paintwork, putty, priming, painting and polishing, as well as assembling the part back, take several days.

PDR technology is the best option in the event of a small dent or, for example, if the car body is damaged by hail. Such damage can be repaired simply and in a short time, usually within a day.

Removing dents: advantages and benefits

Compared to traditional repairs, dent removal is more profitable in economic terms, and is also much faster in time. Such a body repair takes a maximum of a couple of days, and if the dent is small and in an accessible place, then even several hours. Therefore, you will almost immediately get your car back and no one will notice that it was recently damaged. Our specialists have extensive experience in removing dents of any type, size and complexity, and are ready to professionally and in a short time to complete all the work and return the car to its original appearance.

Local body repair

For complex dents formed with sharp edges and chips of the paintwork, we make local body repair. In this case, the restoration of dents is carried out as follows.

The body part is removed, the damaged area is cleaned and prepared for restoration work. After the damaged area is repaired, the part is re-painted and installed on the car. The cost of such a repair depends on the nature of the dent, metal thickness, location, type of paintwork and a number of other factors. In some cases, it is possible to do only with local painting, especially if the dent is located in the lower part of the body - our specialists will be able to make a smooth transition over the paint and there will be no noticeable border between the new and old paintwork.
