You can also get fed up with success. And in the case of the iconic VW Bus, that's probably what happened. For many decades, the T-series sold well and won victory after victory in all tests. So why did the just-completed transition from T5 to T6 cause any problems? The point is this. In Wolfsburg, the model was subjected to a light facelift, leaving the technical part unchanged. But while that has been enough so far, it is not enough now. Not because T6 is somehow bad. But because Mercedes has put a really strong competitor on the wheels in the form of a virtually new V-class car. And people are not fed up with cars of the Mercedes brand yet, but quite the contrary.

The largest representative of the V-class is compared with the smallest T6.

The short T6 (4.90m) vs the long V-class (5.14m) seems unfair, but during the test we got them. Now VW is already supplying a long version of the Multivan (5.30m), just like Mercedes already has a V-Class Extra Long variant (5.37m). The Mercedes has a little more room at shoulder level in front, although the VW has plenty of it. The doors of the Multivan are somewhat thicker, which allows you to casually put your hand on the “sill” in a well-known manner. In terms of space in the rear of the cabin, both cars are equal. The T6 has more legroom because the rear seat can be pushed all the way back, but this is balanced out by the V-Class's greater width and height. When traveling on vacation or moving, Mercedes has the advantage. Its trunk will fit a couple more suitcases than a VW, and a separately opening rear window makes it easier to load small things. In addition, the Stuttgart native pampers the owner with sophisticated interiors, better finishes and more modern technology.

Although VW is not far behind in Internet access, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink support, the V-Class offers more sophisticated hard drive navigation (the VW has an SD card installed) and some extra features. The tangible advantage of the Multivan is its seats. They move easily along the rails and turn with a special handle (in the V-class, this will require them to be dismantled, deployed and reinstalled). As standard, there is a three-seat sofa at the back where you can sleep. Mercedes has 2 options - two separate seats or a three-seater sofa.

As for suspension comfort, the Mercedes staff did a better job on the settings - as a result, the V-Class turned out to be much more comfortable. Thanks to the long-travel independent suspension, the Benz perfectly compensates for bumps in the roadway, while its body sways only slightly, rarely annoying passengers with detailed reports on road conditions.

Driving performance of cars are approximately at the same high level.

Differences T6. Although thanks to the adaptive dampers, it handles bumps quite adequately compared to the T5, the bumps and edges are still felt. In particular, the oscillations of the front axle are not damped very well and the car shakes strongly on wavy roads, which is why all the imperfections of the road profile are transmitted to the steering wheel. Apparently, the Multivan is designed for a high payload of 670kg. Even when fully loaded, the T6's suspension doesn't break through. Because of this, the stiffness of the suspension is quite high. And this is despite the fact that the car has shock absorbers, adjustable in stiffness. For passengers on the back sofa, this problem can be solved by installing an additional air suspension with the replacement of standard hard springs. The issue price is about 4 thousand euros. But the soft springs of the V-class with a permitted 600 kilograms on board can periodically rest against the limiters (although you have to try very hard to break through the shock absorbers and find a really big hole).

Both minibuses are powered by four-cylinder turbodiesels, which, thanks to additional injection, have received the Euro-6 stamp. According to the documents, Mercedes has 190 liters. s., which in the short term should grow to 204 liters. With. – which exactly corresponds to the power of T6. Since they differ in weight by only 40 kilograms, the short distance race ends in a draw, and both have a top speed of just over 200 km / h. More than enough for such heavy vehicles. Although the VW is better insulated and not as grumpy, its slow-paced seven-speed DSG box does spoil the experience a bit when changing gears and pulling away. Benz's seven-speed hydrodynamic automatic handles this better. Consumption for both is just over 8 l / 100 km, which is quite economical.

The cost of the T6 Multivan 2.0 TDI in the database is from 2,345,000 rubles. Mercedes V-Class starts from 2,757,500 rubles. It must be admitted that in this case we are talking only about the initial configurations. V equipped with all the amenities and important additions, Benz overtakes VW by almost several hundred thousand rubles.

On the warranty side, however, both companies are a bit stingy, offering two years – considering the price, I would have liked a bit more.

Conclusion

In the end, it remains only to hint at a slight advantage of Mercedes. Because it is somewhat more comfortable in motion and more modern. The T6 can be commended for its legacy reliability and interior transformation capabilities.

When choosing between these two minibuses, be sure to take the time to personally drive both in the driver's seat and on the rear passenger sofa before buying.
