The Japanese automaker Suzuki first introduced its Grand Vitara SUV to the world back in 1997. For more than 15 years of history, two generations of the model have changed. In addition, the car has been restyled twice. Of course, the car has gained well-deserved popularity among fans of Japanese SUVs. We suggest you "get acquainted" with this car better and consider the technical characteristics for the Suzuki Grand Vitara.

From the very beginning, the car was distinguished by a high ground clearance of 200 mm, unchanged until the current release, and was offered to the buyer in two body versions: three-door and five-door. In the first case, the capacity is 4 people, here in the second - 5. Let's consider each of them in more detail in the order of the issued period.

1st generation

3-door Grand Vitara

The model of the first generation with three doors, produced since 1998, was equipped for Russia with a 1.6 or 2.0 liter engine, designed for 92nd gasoline.

  • The first 1.6-liter 94 hp engine was capable of accelerating the car up to 100 km / h in 13.2 seconds and was running exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Fuel consumption in this case was 12 liters per 100 km in the city or 7 liters outside. The maximum speed was 150 km / h, and the curb weight was 1200 kg.
  • A car with a more powerful, 2-liter engine, it became possible to take it already with an automatic transmission in 4 steps. It developed a power of 128 hp, provided acceleration to 100 km / h in 11.4 seconds, consumed 12.5 liters in urban conditions or 8.5 liters on the highway. The curb weight of this configuration was 1260 or 1300 kg, depending on the gearbox. The maximum developed speed is 160 km / h.

The length of the first generation "three doors" was 3810 mm (3935 mm with a spare wheel attached to the rear door), width - 1700 mm, and height - 1690 mm. The wheelbase was 2200 mm, the front and rear wheel track was 1460 mm wide, and the turning circle was 9 m.The trunk held 210 liters, increasing to 828 liters with the rear seats folded, the fuel tank - 56 liters.

Permanent drive went to the rear wheels with the ability to connect and front-wheel drive. Standard equipment included 215/65 tires on 16-inch wheels.

5-door Grand Vitara

For the five-door version, petrol engines of 1.6, 2.0 and 2.5 liters were provided. Each could be equipped with both manual and automatic transmissions.

  • The car with the smallest engine, 94 hp. was able to pick up a speed of 100 km / h in 13.2 seconds, developed a speed of up to 150 km / h and consumed 12 liters of gasoline in the city and 7 liters on the highway. The weight of such an equipped car is 1310 kg.
  • Machine with a medium, two-liter engine with a capacity of 128 hp. accelerated to hundreds in 11.8 seconds, had a speed limit of 160 km / h, consumed 12.1 liters of fuel in the city or 8.9 liters outside of it. The modification weighed 1385 kg in running order.
  • The largest engine had a power of 144 hp, accelerated the car to 100 km / h in 10.9 seconds, while it required 12.1 liters of fuel in the city and 7.8 liters on the highway, and allowed the car to accelerate to a maximum of 165 km / h. Such a curb vehicle had a mass of 1405 kg.

The length of such a five-door modification was 4215 mm, width - 1780 mm, height - 1740 mm, wheelbase - 2480 mm. The trunk had a volume of 258 liters, expandable to 1080 liters. The volume of the fuel tank is 66 liters. The rest of the parameters were basically the same as those of the "three-door" of that time.

2nd generation

In 2005, the developers completely updated the model, which received the 2nd generation classification. Let's take a closer look at the technical characteristics of the Suzuki Grand Vitara, currently sold in car dealerships.

3-door Grand Vitara

Now the three-door SUV has found new parameters. Full length from the front bumper to the "spare" at the rear - 4060 mm, width without mirrors 1810 mm, height 1695 mm. The wheelbase is 2440 mm, the front track is 1540 mm, the rear track is 1570 mm. The luggage compartment has a minimum volume of 184 liters with the rear seat backs up; if they are folded, then the space will already increase to 516 liters; the maximum volume is 964 liters. The tires used are 225 / 70R16 or 225 / 65R17.

Engines on the three-door version are equipped with 1.6 or 2.4 liter petrol engines. The first is equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the second - with a 4-speed "automatic". The main characteristics of both modifications:

  • The 1.6 petrol engine has a displacement of 1586 mm3, the maximum power is 106 hp. at 5900 rpm, torque - 145 N at 4100 rpm. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 14.4 seconds, while the maximum speed is 160 km / h. Fuel consumption is 10.2 liters in the city, 7.1 liters on the highway or 8.2 liters in the combined cycle. The curb minimum weight of the car with this engine is 1407 kg, with all options - 1482 kg, while the total weight is 1830 kg.
  • The 2.4 engine has a displacement of 2393 mm3, the power is 166 hp. at 6000 rpm, torque - 225 N at 3800 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 11.5 seconds, top speed is 170 km / h. Fuel consumption - 11.9 liters in the city, 8.0 liters on the highway or 9.4 liters in mixed mode. The curb minimum weight of a car with a 2.4-liter engine is 1461 kg, with all options - 1539 kg, full - 1890 kg.

5-door Grand Vitara

A car with a five-door body is longer - 4300 mm or 4500 mm, if you count from the front bumper to the rear "spare wheel" in the cover, the wheelbase is 2640 mm. The minimum trunk capacity is 398 liters, with the backrest of the rear row seats raised, folding it will increase this figure to 758 liters, while the maximum volume that can be achieved is 1386 liters.

There are two options for equipping the "five-door" with engines: for 2.0 liters and for 2.4 liters, and each can be equipped with both manual gear shifting by 5 steps, and a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The parameters of these configurations:

  • The working volume of the 2.0 liter engine is 1995 mm3. Maximum power 140 HP at 6000 rpm, torque 183 N at 4000 rpm. The car accelerates to 100 km / h in 12.5 seconds on manual gear shifting or in 13.6 seconds on “automatic” and develops a maximum speed of 175 km / h and 170 km / h, respectively. The engine consumes fuel in the amount of 10.6 liters in the city, 7.1 liters outside, or 8.4 liters in a combined cycle with a mechanical gearbox. The automatic will change these parameters to 11.2 liters, 7.5 liters and 8.9 liters. The curb weight of the car with mechanics is 1533 kg, the installation of all options will increase it to 1643 kg, the gross weight is 2070 kg. With an automatic gearbox, these figures will be 1548 kg and 1658 kg (the total weight is the same).
  • The 2.4 l engine has a displacement of 2393 mm3. Maximum power 169 HP at 6000 rpm and 227 N at 3800 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 11.7 seconds on manual gear shifting and 12.0 seconds on automatic, top speed is 185 km / h and 175 km / h, respectively. This type of engine will require a fuel consumption of 11.4 liters in the city, 7.6 liters on the highway or 9.0 liters in the combined cycle in the configuration with manual gear shifting. Equipping with an automatic transmission will increase these indicators to 12.5 liters, 8.1 liters and 9.7 liters, respectively. The model equipped with a manual transmission has a curb weight of 1569 kg, the addition of options changes it to 1655 kg, and the gross weight is 2100 kg. Equipping with an automatic transmission means respectively 1584 kg and 1670 kg, the gross weight will remain the same.

Options Grand Vitara

The developers of the Grand Vitara have to compete with brands such as Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Therefore, they have implemented in this model the optimal combination of excellent cross-country characteristics with the required level of comfort.

The modern Suzuki Grand Vitara in the basic configuration has everything that every driver needs today:

  • power windows,
  • air conditioner,
  • central lock,
  • heated front seats,
  • on-board computer,
  • electric mirrors with heating and repeaters of direction indicators,
  • 6 airbags,
  • front and rear fog lights,
  • CD receiver with MP3 function.

Technical characteristics of "Suzuki Grand Vitara" will help you appreciate this car. So, to begin with, it should be noted that the presented transport is in good demand, since, with good functionality, it has an acceptable cost. The machine is a 3- and 5-door universal machine. The disadvantage of the car is its small capacity and not very good road holding. However, these flaws are compensated for by other features.

Technical characteristics of "Suzuki Grand Vitara" are also represented by an excellent running, transmission and braking system. The car is very durable, and it will be able to drive up to 400,000 km before overhaul. Naturally, valve clearances require periodic adjustment.

As for the gear shifting system, it is distinguished by its durability and reliability. It is equipped with a Part Time 4WD drive, which can only be used on slippery roads, and for a short time. In the event of a transmission breakdown, you will have to shell out up to $ 1200 to repair it. Periodically, the box requires the installation of a new universal joint shaft. The transmission can be mechanical (5-speed) and automatic (4-speed).

Other technical characteristics should be considered. The clutch is very reliable and should therefore not be replaced after 150,000 km at the earliest. the car can be connected manually or automatically. Moreover, the first option is less prone to breakdowns.

Despite the fact that the car is small in size, its frame is impressive. The increased rigidity makes it possible to drive on the most difficult off-road without damage to the car. The rest of the technical characteristics of the Suzuki Grand Vitara are good enough. made of very strong metal, so it is difficult to break it. In addition, the vehicle is equipped with removable ball joints. The steering system is equipped with a hydraulic booster that does not break down for a long time. When buying this transport, you should pay attention to the quality of the gearbox.

The Suzuki Grand Vitara has an excellent braking system. You will have to change the pads only after 40,000 km. Drums can last even longer. It should be noted that this transport is very simple and unpretentious in operation. It is versatile, small in size and perfect for a small family of 4. You can drive this car not only on asphalt. It will do an excellent job even on uneven surfaces. The car is also equipped with 3-6 airbags, climate control, an audio system, a course stability system, heated seats and a chip key.

The characteristics of "Suzuki Grand Vitara" confirm that for little money you can get a high-quality vehicle, the repair and maintenance of which will not require significant investments. The cost of this car today ranges from 5 to 11 thousand dollars.

For the first time, the Suzuki Grand Vitara appeared on the market in 1988. Then it was called simply Suzuki Vitara and belonged to the category of compact SUVs, since its length was only 3570 mm, and under the hood was a 1.6-liter engine with 80 hp. Despite the unsightly appearance of the car, 60 thousand units were sold in the first year. Two years later, its extended version Vitara Long appeared.

The history of the Suzuki Grand Vitara

Suzuki Grand Vitara appeared in 1998. She, like her predecessors, remained a full-fledged SUV, retaining in its design the frame, the full rear axle, a full-fledged transfer case and a rigidly connected front axle. However, the shift in global demand towards SUVs forced the company to gradually simplify the off-road "armament" of the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Therefore, the second generation, which appeared in 2005, was distinguished by an integrated frame, permanent all-wheel drive, instead of a plug-in, and independent suspension of all wheels. The Suzuki Grand Vitara transmissions were offered with a five-speed manual gearbox and a four-band "automatic". At the same time, the off-road capabilities of the Suzuki Grand Vitara were retained, as well as the limited slip center differential.

Three years later, the car has undergone modernization. The Suzuki Grand Vitara has new engines of 2.4 and 3.2 liters, improved noise insulation, and in the top configurations they began to install assistance systems on the ascent and descent.

In 2010, the European version of the Suzuki Grand Vitara was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. It was distinguished by a slightly modified appearance and the absence of a spare wheel on the tailgate.

The car underwent the last restyling in 2012. It gets a new grille, chrome side moldings, a new front bumper and eight-spoke alloy wheels. The updated version was presented at the Moscow Motor Show.

The technical component of the Suzuki Grand Vitara

However, these changes did not affect the technical filling of the car. In fact, this is the same Suzuki Grand Vitara with an integrated frame, a full-fledged transfer case, a reduction gear and a multi-mode permanent all-wheel drive system. In total, there are four modes of its operation: "N" or neutral, when the wheel drive is completely disabled (used for towing a faulty car), 4H for driving on asphalt roads, 4H LOCK with a locking center differential and 4L LOCK with a differential lock and a lower gear connection ...

Complete set Suzuki Grand Vitara

Currently in the Russian market, the Suzuki Grand Vitara is offered with three-door and five-door bodies. The short-base version is equipped with a 1.6-liter 78 hp engine. For other modifications, engines of 2.0 and 2.4 liters with a capacity of 103 and 124 hp are offered. respectively.

However, in recent years, the demand for the Suzuki Grand Vitara has declined so much that Suzuki decided to abandon further production of the model. And if earlier, representatives of the company stuttered about the possibility of using the platform of the Kizahi sedan for the next generation of the car, now this is not the case.

The "Grand Vitara" off-road vehicle is one of the most famous models of the Japanese company "Suzuki" in Russia and the world. The first "Grand Vitara" was released back in 1997 and was built on the basis of the second generation Suzuki Escudo (in fact, becoming its export version - focused on Europe). The car was originally presented in two body versions: three-door and five-door (while the "five-door" was previously produced not only in the "standard" (five-seater) version, but also in the "elongated" (seven-seater) version (known as the "XL-7" ).

The second incarnation of the Suzuki Grand Vitara came out in 2005 and since then has been repeatedly updated, which, however, did not bring the design of this car closer to "modern standards". This can only be explained by the fact that the designers of Suzuki Motor Corporation are extremely "conservative" - ie. prefer a strict classic style (which also allows saving on production). As a result, we can say that "Suzuki Grand Vitara for Japan" is like "UAZ Patriot for Russia": a little "square", seemingly simple and not flashy, but practical and versatile.

As mentioned above, Suzuki Grand Vitara is available in two versions, which outwardly differ not only in the number of doors, but also in dimensions ("three-door", by the way, we have a separate detailed review devoted to it).

The length of the three-door is 4,060 mm, and the length of the five-doors is 4,500 mm. The length of the wheelbase is 2,440 and 2,640 mm, respectively. The width for both versions is the same - 1,810 mm, the overall height is also 1,695 mm. We especially note the height of the ground clearance (clearance): 195 mm under the front axle and 215 mm under the rear axle.

The interior of the Suzuki Grand Vitara is just as "boring and dull" as the exterior: the front panel is made of plastic, the seats are upholstered in fabric, and the center console in the basic trim levels looks more like an "old control panel" than a piece of car interior, fortunately in top-end versions it is diluted with a touchscreen display (however, and that one is executed in a kind of "retro style"). Of the pluses, we note: excellent assembly and high quality fit of parts.

The salon of the three-door Suzuki Grand Vitara is designed for four passengers, but the five-door version has a standard five seats. At the same time, we note that there is no abundance of free space (except for the height above the head) in the cabin, even in the back, and it will be cramped for tall passengers, especially in the knees.

The trunk also does not indulge in spaciousness - 184 liters in the "three-door" and 398 liters in the "five-door".

Specifications. There are three motors for the "second" Suzuki Grand Vitara on the Russian market. All of them are gasoline, have four cylinders, a 16-valve timing mechanism, a multi-point fuel injection system and fully comply with the requirements of the Euro-4 standard. At the same time, we note that on the EU market, these motors are more environmentally friendly and fit into the framework of Euro-5 requirements.

  • The younger 1.6-liter M16A engine is available only in the basic configuration of the three-door version and is capable of squeezing out no more than 106 hp. maximum power. The torque of this engine at its peak rests on the mark of 145 Nm, which, together with the only available 5-speed manual transmission, provides the "three-door" with sufficient acceleration dynamics for this class - from 0 to 100 km / h in 14.4 seconds. The maximum travel speed will be no more than 160 km / h.
  • The next engine - "J20A" with a volume of 2.0 liters is the base for the five-door modification of the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Its peak power is 140 hp and the upper torque limit is 183 Nm. For this engine, in addition to the already voiced "mechanics", a 4-band "automatic" is also available. It should be noted, however, that it is already so outdated that for at least ten years it "begs for scrap." The acceleration dynamics of the "five-door" with a 2.0-liter engine and automatic transmission is only slightly better than that of the base "three-door" on the "mechanics" - 13.6 seconds.
  • And, finally, the flagship engine "J24B", available on the "three-door" only in conjunction with the "automatic", and on the "five-door" both with the "mechanics" and with the "automatic". Its working volume is 2.4 liters, and the maximum power does not exceed 168 hp. As for the torque, this motor is capable of producing 225 Nm. On the "three-door" due to the lower curb weight (1,461 kg versus 1,584 kg), this is enough for a quiet acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 11.5 seconds. "Five-door" with automatic transmission will raise the hand to a hundred in 12.0 seconds, but the version with "mechanics" will keep within 11.7 seconds.

The main "trump card" of the Suzuki Grand Vitara is the all-wheel drive system, which allows you to feel confident on the off-road. Of course, the "Grand Vitara" is not a full-fledged SUV, but it will leave most of the crossovers "in the mud" behind "without straining too much." Note that the standard three-door version is equipped with a simple Full Time 4x4 all-wheel drive system, and only all other modifications receive a modern multi-mode transmission with the ability to engage a downshift and lock the center differential.

The crossover's suspension is completely independent, based on MacPherson struts at the front, and on a multi-link structure at the rear. Ventilated disc brakes are used on the front wheels, drum mechanisms are installed on the rear wheels of the basic three-door, and ventilated brake discs on all other versions.

Options and prices. For Russia, the Suzuki Grand Vitara in 2015 is offered in five equipment options at a price of 1,139,000 rubles for the basic version in a three-door body and from 1,349,000 rubles for the starting equipment of the "five-door", while the metallic paint will have to pay 16 more 900 rubles. The price for Suzuki Grand Vitara, frankly, is far from small, taking into account the "age of the model" and what competitors can offer.
