Replacing spark plugs is mandatory for routine vehicle maintenance, especially given the quality of gasoline in our country. Replacement is also worth considering when preparing the car for winter. In this article we will look at how to clean or, if necessary, replace the candles on the Lada Kalina.

How do spark plugs work?

Spark plugs are a device for igniting a fuel / air mixture in an engine. They consist of a metal body, an insulator and a center conductor. They are located in the spark plug wells, which, in turn, are located in the cylinder heads of the engine. Attached to the top are high voltage wires that supply voltage to the spark gap.

Experienced motorists are advised to change them every 20-30 thousand kilometers. Or earlier, if the state of these parts requires it. So, the need to replace candles on Kalina may be indicated by problems with the starter, a decrease in engine power, twitching of the car and vibration while driving.

Candle replacement process

Before the replacement procedure, it is advisable to purge or wipe the casing and the cylinder head. This is done to prevent dust, dirt and debris from entering the engine block, which can lead to catastrophic consequences.

For work we need: a 10 mm head, a spark plug wrench or a 16 head with an extension (For eight-valve engines, you will need a 21 head with an extension).

Step-by-step instructions for replacing candles on Kalina with a 16-valve engine

  • With a sharp jerk upward, remove the plastic engine cover.
  • We disconnect the wires from the ignition coils, after which we unscrew the fastening bolts with a 10 key and remove the coils from the spark plug well.
  • Unscrew the candle with a 16 key and insert a new one.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing candles on Kalina with an 8-valve engine

  • Remove the wire end (don't be afraid to put in a little effort).
  • Unscrew the candle with a key of 21 and replace it with a new one.

When installing candles, you should not make excessive efforts, otherwise you can disrupt the thread of the well, which is fraught with expensive repairs. In Kalina, replacement of spark plugs for 1.4 l and 1.6 l engines is similar.

Possible breakdowns and their causes

There are many reasons why candles can fail. This can happen due to contamination with oil or carbon deposits, destruction of the insulator, mechanical damage, rupture of the bridge, etc. Realistically, you can only deal with dirt. In all other cases, you will have to think about replacing the part.

There are three main cleaning methods: digestion method, sandblasting method and ultrasonic cleaning. Due to the fact that specialized equipment is needed for ultrasonic cleaning, we will focus on the two remaining methods.

Digestion method

The essence of this method is that you need to boil candles in water with washing powder for an hour. This method will allow you to clean the part from dirt without damaging the case. It is worth noting that after cleaning, they give an unstable yellow spark, which can cause problems at high rpm.

Sandblasting method

The part is cleaned with compressed air supplied from a sandblaster. Unlike the first method, after such cleaning the candles completely restore their original parameters and give a good blue spark. However, this method works only with single-electrode ones, since in them the ceramic cone is more accessible than in multi-electrode ones.

Which spark plugs are better for Lada Kalina 8-valve: tips

Lada Kalina has a valve type 8 or 16. The choice of candles in this case is the same for all VAZ cars. It is very important to give preference to high-quality candles, so that they serve for a long time and regularly. It is also necessary to change them periodically so that the motor works correctly and the car runs normally.

Spark plugs for 8-valve and 16-valve Lada Kalina

The manufacturing plant VAZ offers for purchase for Lada Kalina cars spark plugs А17ДВРМ and А15ДВРМ, as well as their foreign counterparts. For products with 8 valves, A17DVRM is used, and for 16 - AU17DVRM. These are the best candles that last a long time and do not require constant adjustment. The manufacturer must guarantee 18 months of trouble-free operation, provided that the mileage is 2000 km. With proper and careful use, candles can last 3-4 years. Some marketers advise installing platinum or multi-electrode plugs on cars, although their cost is much higher than usual. But on the other hand, they serve for a long time and regularly.

Candles for cars on gas (LPG): which is better

Today, many people install gas equipment on their cars, since it is much cheaper and more profitable to drive on gas than on gasoline. The following candles are suitable for such cars:

  • French BERU Ultra 14R-7DU, they are not really designed for gas, but still fit;
  • Ukrainian Plazmofor Super GAZs have good quality, but are inferior to imported ones;
  • Czech Brisk LPG LR15YS Silver, the electrode of which is made of silver. They are cheap but non-toxic.
  • German Bosch Platinum WR7DP - they have a thin electrode and an original design;
  • Japanese NGK LPG LaserLine are quite expensive, but non-toxic and economical.

In general, there are a large number of them, the main thing is to choose models with thin electrodes for gas.

Candle selection criteria

In order for the engine to run smoothly, quality spark plugs are required. Their choice is of great importance for a full ride. You need to buy candles only in a specialized store. The selection criteria are as follows:

  • candle size. Do not give preference to small ones, as they will not screw into the engine hole. Large ones are also not suitable. They need to be average;
  • glow number. It shows the temperature mode. It should be high, then the candle will work more "aggressively". A low number means that the part will overheat and, as a result, wear out quickly.

In general, today there are a lot of different candles, which differ from each other in size, heat rating, material, and also in the principle of operation. The best options are products from NGK, Bosch, Denso and others. These manufacturers have long proven themselves to be the best, so their products can be trusted.

Experts recommend not to take candles on your own if you do not understand this issue, and also do not know temperature regime of your motor. In this case, it is better to consult a specialist from the auto repair shop. He will help you choose the right part, which will not only serve correctly, but also will not require constant repair or replacement.

As we have already said, with careful use, the candles can not be changed for 3 years. That is why you do not need to save on these devices, otherwise after a short time you will have to spend again on the purchase of new candles. Do not hesitate to seek competent help, as it is better to consult and buy a quality part than to take what is offered in the store, and then regret your choice. In any case, the service life depends on the conditions of use. It is advisable to change the candles every 30 thousand km.

Which candles on Lada Kalina are better and which ones are worse

According to the technical regulations, spark plugs in 21116 and 21126 engines should be changed during TO-2, that is, after 30 thousand kilometers. In fact, this period can be extended one and a half times, if we are talking about a sparing operating mode. But you should not do this if the car is under warranty (then the replacement is made according to the regulations). Here we list which spark plugs are suitable for each of the specified engines. We will assume that the owner of Kalina-2 uses the catalogs of the following companies: BERU, CHAMPION, NGK, DENSO, BRISK, BOSCH.

  • JSC ZAZS (Russia) - AU17DVRM, A17DVRM;
  • BERU (Germany) - 14FR-7DU, 14R-7DU;
  • CHAMPION (England) - RC9YC, RN9YC;
  • NGK (Japan) - BCPR6ES, BPR6ES;
  • DENSO (Japan) - Q20PR-U11, W20EPR;
  • BRISK (Czech Republic) - DR15YC, LR15YC;
  • BOSCH (Germany) - FR7DCU, WR7DC.

On the left is the brand of the product suitable for the 16-valve engine, on the right for the 8-valve engine. You may notice that the candles with a thin electrode, iridium, etc. were not listed here. A thin electrode is then used to ensure the reliability of ignition at high speeds (7,000, 8,000 rpm or more), but a cutoff is triggered for VAZ engines above 6,000 rpm. Iridium candles in their design have a thin central electrode, but as we have already found out, the transition to the use of such parts is a waste of money, and nothing more. The longevity of iridium plugs roughly corresponds to the "life" value of a plug with a standard gauge copper electrode. We leave the choice to the owner.

Ceramic plaque has appeared - change the candles immediately!

In terms of their operational parameters, including durability, all the components of the listed items are almost the same from each other. This is confirmed by the reviews of car owners expressed in various forums, etc. Perhaps there are more expensive components, the use of which will allow a trivial replacement to increase the power, engine torque or some other characteristics. But having installed such candles in the 21126 engine, most likely you will have to forget about the warranty for the AY-K3 box. With technology it is always like this: you need to imagine what exactly we are doing and what we want to achieve as a result.
The choice of candles for modern VAZ engines

Indications for replacing candles:

  • If black soot (“chamois”) is present on the insulator cone and electrodes, it can be cleaned or replaced. Cleaning is carried out, including by heating. When replacing, it is better to use candles with a slightly lower glow value than it was before;
  • If the surface of the insulator looks like a yellowish glossy ceramic, then the plug needs to be replaced. In this case, the formation of a glassy glaze is taking place. It is electrically conductive.

In the first of the considered cases, carbon deposits are formed because not all elements of the candle are heated sufficiently, and self-cleaning does not occur. This can happen when the car is used for short trips at low speeds, frequent starts and stops. The same effect is characteristic for the operation of the motor at low temperatures. Logically, in such situations, the recommended replacement would be a candle with a lower heat rating than was provided by the manufacturer. You can try to install A14DVRM plugs instead of A17DVRM in an 8-valve engine, and so on. Only now, such a replacement must be discussed with the dealer.

Comparison of A17DVRM analogues produced under different brands

One of the online publications conducted a comparative test of spark plugs designed for the VAZ-21116 engine. Tested analogs of the candle A17DVRM supplied by the following companies:

  • APS, Bosch, Brisk - Russian production;
  • Bosch Platinum, Beru, Finwhale - Germany;
  • NGK, Denso - Japan;
  • Eyquem - France;
  • Champion - "Made in the European Union".

Note that testing was carried out on an 8-valve VAZ-2111 engine (injectors, lambda probe, without catalyst, "January-5.1"). All measurements were carried out at the stand.
Selection of spark plugs for 8-valve engine 21116

The result of the tests performed is shown in the photo in the form of graphs. As you can see, there is still a point in buying imports: the use of Bosch candles, as well as products of the Finwhale, Brisk and Champion brands will provide a noticeable increase in power. If you want to save on fuel, then ask the stores for NGK products. Additional comments are superfluous here.

Forced engines are characterized by an increased compression value, and VAZ engines are no exception. With Brisk spark plugs installed, you don't have to worry about sparks at high pressure. But note that NGK candles have similar characteristics. It turns out that it is NGK products that should be considered the best choice, although fakes under this brand have appeared recently. And the "remake", it seems, is now coming from France, which is described in the film.

Lada Kalina - Blog of car owners: NGK candles for Kalina

My Kalina has already run a little over 40,000 km, and the factory spark plugs still worked fine, despite the fact that the manufacturer recommends changing them once every 30,000 km. Well, I think I'll try to buy and install new ones, maybe something will change for the better, but in principle it’s better, it’s not necessary, everything was fine in my opinion.

Went to BBC, got a set of NGK spark plugs. Since the engine in my Kalina is 8-valve, then for my engine it was No. 13, and if you have a 16-valve engine, then you need to put No. 11.

I unscrewed the old ones and looked at them, everything seemed to be fine, but they were just too red, and this indicates, first of all, that there were too many iron-containing additives in the gasoline with which I refueled the car, which did not do any good engine. Since I refueled mainly at one local gas station, then I blame it. Now you have to change the gas station.

I twirled new candles and decided to try how they would work, and whether they would be any different from the factory ones. Kalina started up normally, after warming up, the tachometer needle still barely floats noticeably, but if you don't look closely, it is simply impossible to determine the floating speed by ear. But when I started checking at high speeds, I was pleasantly surprised, the sound became much softer and this is clearly not self-hypnosis, since I have been listening to my 8-valve tractor for two years now and I can certainly feel the changes. Judging by the feeling, then something began to resemble my old car with 1.5 16-cl. motor. But at idle, the bubbling has not ceased, it is evident that you cannot get rid of it in any way.

So, while I am satisfied with the replacement of the candles, the high revs are now quiet and without unnecessary vibrations, as it was before. Let's see how high-quality they are and how long they last. So far, everything is super.

🚘 How Often To Change Spark Plugs - Spark Plug Replacement Period

Replacing spark plugs on Lada Kalina is a very simple and not too expensive procedure. However, it is far from always necessary to replace consumables, it is quite possible that old candles will serve you a little more.

How often should the spark plugs be changed?

The standard frequency of replacing spark plugs at a VAZ can fluctuate within a fairly wide range - from 30 thousand kilometers for regular (standard) ones and up to 80 thousand for modern iridium and platinum ones. As in the case with any other consumables, fluctuations are possible, the main factors of influence on which are the condition of the engine and the ignition system, the quality of the fuel and the nature of the vehicle's operation. For example, if you often drive short distances around the city, then even if all car systems are working normally, the candles usually quickly become covered with black carbon deposits, since they do not reach the required temperature for self-cleaning.

It is not difficult to diagnose the condition of the spark plugs. It is better to do this visually. If you find only a slight darkening and a slight grayish-yellow or pale brown coating on dry electrodes that have not lost their shape, you can safely return the candles to their place and continue driving.

If a significant bloom of black or white or a shade of rust is found, oiling is already a reason to think about replacing them or at least cleaning them. Cleaning can be done by soaking the candles in gasoline or a special liquid and carefully removing the plaque with a brush or fine sandpaper. In this case, be sure to check the gap between the spark plugs between the electrodes using the feeler gauges. It will almost certainly differ from the recommended 1-1.1 mm. To continue operation, it must be restored by carefully bending the side electrode. But keep in mind that this is more of a temporary measure, after which the replacement period for spark plugs will pass much faster than for new ones.

It is better to discard electrodes if they:

  • Heavily contaminated
  • Lost shape
  • Melted
  • Broken off
  • Are damaged on the insulator

By the way, their condition is usually direct evidence of more serious problems, or the car owner's unwillingness to perform maintenance on time. Like all other consumables, it is better to change candles regularly and in a timely manner. But what are the best spark plugs for Kalina?

What candles to put in Kalina

The manufacturer for Kalina recommended domestic candles of the A17DVRM type (for 8-valve engines) and AU15DVRM, AU17DVRM (for 16-valve engines), as well as their foreign counterparts. For example, BRISK LR15YC (Czech Republic), BOSCH WR7DC (Germany), NGK BPR6ES (Japan) candles are suitable for 8-valve cars, BRISK DR15YC, BOSCH FR7DCU and NGK BCPR6ES for 16-valve cars, respectively.

All of the above candles are single-electrode - this is the type that the manufacturer recommends to use again. It is not forbidden to put multi-electrode analogs (it is believed that they give the best arc), just keep in mind that they will cost a little more, and you may not notice the effect. With regard to iridium and platinum spark plugs, their main advantage is their long service life.

Replacing spark plugs - Lada Kalina Blog

Since the mileage of my Kalina has long exceeded 30,000 km, I decided to replace the factory spark plugs with new ones, although, to be honest, the factory ones still felt fine. In frost it started up to -20 from the first time, if the thermometer dropped even lower - then from the second. At idle, the tachometer needle floated a little, of course, but barely noticeable to the eye. In short, it was still possible to drive, but since it was written in the murzilka - change after 30,000 km, then we will follow its instructions and recommendations.

It didn't take long to choose a company, since most car owners speak pretty good about NGK candles, and the main thing here is not to run into a fake. If you have a 16-valve Lada Kalina, then you need to take NGK No. 11, and if you have a regular 8-valve engine, then No. 13. I will write out the whole procedure a little, maybe this information will be useful for girls or beginners.

The procedure for replacing spark plugs on Lada Kalina:

Before this procedure, it is advisable to wipe everything well and clean it from possible oil stains or dust so that no debris gets into the cylinder. Now we need either a spark plug wrench or a 21 mm long head.

We remove the wires one by one, you will have to make a little effort, since they sit quite tightly.

Personally, the state of the electrode was normal for me, there were no deposits, oil film or carbon deposits on them, the only thing was that there was a reddish bloom. And this is also not very good and suggests that iron-containing additives, the so-called ferrocenes, were present in the fuel with which I refueled my Kalina. This can lead to misfiring, loss of power and increased fuel consumption.

When we screw in new spark plugs, it is best to first tighten them by hand, and only then use a wrench.

Advice for beginners: it is better to change them one by one: that is, first we unscrew the old one and immediately put the new one, and so on for each cylinder.

It's quite difficult to mix up the wires, though! But I remember the case with my father's VAZ 2112 16-valve, when we put on the wires incorrectly and started the car - it worked like a tractor, all the cylinders were in disarray. After you put a new plug, put on the wire and carry out exactly the same operation with the rest of the cylinders!

That's all! Tighten it better so that air does not pass through, otherwise over time it can pull out the candle along with the thread, then you will have to spend a certain amount of money on repairs, but do you need it? At the end of my topic, I would like to arrange a small survey, who uses which companies, besides NGK, and what impressions? We discuss in the comments below!

NGK vs Brisk: experiment with increasing the gap of candles

A couple of months ago I wrote about replacing spark plugs on my Kalina. Instead of the factory ones, Brisk decided to try another manufacturer, namely NGK, there were too many positive reviews about them. I bought a set of candles as always at BBC and replaced it. I did not set the gap, since the manufacturer assures that everything has already been set for perfect engine operation.

After the replacement, no more than 1000 km passed and the first cylinder began to pierce, this was especially noticeable at idle, when sharp dips in the engine's operation were felt. I opened the hood and saw that the candle had burst along the entire perimeter, about which I previously wrote an article. You can search in this section if you are interested, there is a photo there. And instead, I decided to put back the factory Birsk, which, although it was already red from long-term use, worked perfectly.

Since it is almost summer on the street now, the usual bubbling and diesel engines of a 1.6 8-valve engine, in theory, should not be, especially on a warm engine. But on my Kalina, for some reason, this bubbling was present even on a well-heated engine, although this was not observed before the installation of the NGK candles. Therefore, today I decided to unscrew and look at their condition. In appearance, everything was fine with them, but then I noticed that the gap on the factory Brisk was larger. I took out old spark plugs from the glove compartment and decided to set the same gap on them on my NGKs. Pay attention to the photo below:

Factory Brisk on the left, new NGK on the right

After doing this work, I decided to start the car and try to warm it up to operating temperature in order to assess how much the new clearance affected the engine's operation. I took a ride to a gas station about 20 km from the city. And here's the conclusion I can draw:

  1. The diesel engine stopped when the engine was fully warmed up.
  2. Engine sound is quieter, especially when idling
  3. I was pleasantly surprised by the fuel consumption. If, with a small spark plug gap, it was 5.8 - 6.2 liters, then after increasing to the factory Brisk, it became 4.8 - 5.2. Tested at a speed of 90 km / h. Moreover, during today's tests there was a wind.

For myself, I concluded that you should not blindly trust the manufacturer and it is better to set the necessary gap yourself and experiment a little, changing everything up or down. Now they are even more wary of NGK brand products, since this is the second case with negative consequences.

Which spark plugs are better for Lada Grant 8 valve: video

Car: Lada Granta. Asks: Vinogradov Ilya. The essence of the question: What are the best spark plugs for Lada Granta?

Hello, tell me which spark plugs are better to install on the 8-valve Lada Granta? I would like their resource to be larger and they work longer, but at the same time, so that the car feels confident on the road.

Which candles are best for you?

Malfunctioning spark plugs are directly related to the unstable operation of the internal combustion engine. When this element fails, the motor immediately starts to start unstably, twitch, triple, and its thrust drops significantly. To solve this problem, you just need to replace them, but we will tell you how to choose the best ones below.

The following two tabs change content below.

I own a Renault Megan 2 car, before that there were Citroens and Peugeots. I work in the service area of a dealership, so I know the car's structure "inside and out." You can always ask me for advice.

Regardless of whether you have a 16-valve or 8-valve engine, the recommendations from the manufacturer will be the same. In other words, any of the candles listed below will suit your car.

Instructions for choosing spark plugs from the factory

Some Grantees claim that after installing Denso plugs, they have an increase in power of +100500 horsepower

Based on the data specified in the manual for Lada Grant cars, the plant indicates the following data:

The most optimal spark plug life is 20,000 kilometers within 18 months. During this time, each manufacturer is obliged to guarantee the smooth operation of their product. However, if the operation of the car is carried out carefully, then this period can be safely increased by 2 times, resulting in 3 years of use or 40,000 kilometers.

Remember that the spark plug gap should be between 1 and 1.15 millimeters.

Plant against iridium, platinum and multi-electrode plugs

Iridium candles from Denso for 8 valves

Currently, manufacturers more and more often began to offer consumers the so-called iridium, multi-electrode or platinum spark plugs, which can significantly improve the thrust and power of the Lada Granta engine.

However, the manufacturer, AvtoVAZ, is very skeptical about this step, urging motorists not to deviate from standard recommendations.

More recently, tests were carried out among spark plugs and the following table was formed:

These candles are very affordable for every customer.

Indications for replacing candles:

  • If black soot (“chamois”) is present on the insulator cone and electrodes, it can be cleaned or replaced. Cleaning is carried out, including by heating. When replacing, it is better to use candles with a slightly lower glow value than it was before;
  • If the surface of the insulator looks like a yellowish glossy ceramic, then the plug needs to be replaced.

  • APS, Bosch, Brisk - Russian production;
  • Bosch Platinum, Beru, Finwhale - Germany;
  • NGK, Denso - Japan;
  • Eyquem - France;

The line of cars from VAZ - Priora, Kalina and Grant have many similarities. Each of these cars has different modifications with different engines. But, in fact, the main difference in the motors of these models is only in the number of valves.

Spark plugs for Priora, Kalina and Grant differ only depending on whether the 8- or 16-valve engine is installed, regardless of the generation or year of the car. Original spare parts for all three models are supplied by the Russian company ZAZS.

Spark plugs for Kalina, Priora and Grant - which ones to choose?

Lada Kalina (1st and 2nd generations), Granta and Priora were equipped with both 8 and 16-valve engines. And although they were different for each car, they are structurally very similar. Therefore, the spark plugs were installed on all three cars the same, the differences are only in the articles. The candles, as mentioned above, on all cars differ only depending on the number of valves in the engine.

In the original, conventional nickel plugs with one ground electrode are installed on all three cars. The main differences between the spark plug for 8- and 16-valve valves are in the size of the wrench for screwing it in.

More details about the sizes and original articles in the table below.

* According to the Champion nomenclature (Russian standard)

Despite the fact that each car has a different article number of the original spark plugs, they are interchangeable. Original candles can be found on sale and directly from the manufacturer "ZAZS". For 8 valve motors, they have the article A17DVRM, and for 16-valve motors - AU17DVRM.

The most famous substitute models from other manufacturers are presented below.

As shown by polls on some popular automotive communities on the Runet, the most popular brands among the owners of VAZs of the tenth family are NGK and Denso. In addition to the usual nickel candles, the owners of the cars described in the article often resort to installing more advanced, iridium ones. Their service life is consistently three times longer than usual, or even more. In addition, they further improve the responsiveness of the motor. The most popular spark plugs for these vehicles are from Denso. For 16 cl. this is an IK20 at a price of 520 rubles / piece, and for 8 cells. - IW20, price - 590 rubles / piece.

When to change spark plugs on Priora, Kalina and Grant?

According to the maintenance regulations for Lada Kalina, Granta and Priora, spark plugs must be replaced every 30 thousand km. mileage, regardless of the configuration of the car, or how many valves the engine has. But, this indicator is strongly influenced by some factors, such as fuel quality, operating conditions, etc. Therefore, in fact, their service life averages somewhere between 20-25 thousand km.
