Engineers LADA talked about the next stage of modernization of the legendary SUV LADA 4x4... Experts have done a lot of work on changing the chassis of the cars. The main emphasis was placed on improving the consumer properties of the suspension. The engineers were faced with the task of increasing the strength, reliability and durability of individual units. The necessary changes were made, among other things, to the design of the front axle: it was disconnected from the engine and installed on the front suspension. This solution resulted in a reduction of unnecessary vibrations. This innovation also allows, if necessary, to install almost any power unit on a car.


To make changes to the car's hub unit, experts worked on the front steering knuckle: instead of installing tapered bearings, it was decided to use a double-row ball bearing with improved tightness. One of the main advantages of this part is that there is no need to make adjustments during operation. Previously, it was necessary to do this every 10-15 thousand kilometers. The steering knuckle as a whole has been modernized in terms of kinematics. Thus, the updated LADA 4x4, will become more stable when braking. The hub, the outer hinge housing and the brake disc have undergone changes and refinements - the latter is currently installed as standard, for all LADA scheme. Previously, this happened according to a separate scheme for an SUV.

It is necessary to dwell in more detail on the brake disc. Currently, thanks to the work of engineers, it is covered with an anti-corrosion compound. The upper and lower ball pins have undergone revision - the fastenings of the front stabilizer have been changed, the design of the stabilizer mounting pads has been changed. This makes it possible to exclude the process of squeezing the pillows out of the clips during the operation of the SUV.

The next stage of improvement is suspension readjustment. The operation was performed to improve the damping characteristics. The changes affected the front springs. To increase energy intensity, gas-filled shock absorbers are currently being installed.

To improve the quality, the specialists made changes to the lower hinges, changed the fluid in the shock absorbers and modernized the valve group. First time off-road vehicle LADA 4x4 gas back-up and synthetic oil used.

The rubber-metal hinges have undergone modernization. Coloring of rods changed or powder, thus increasing corrosion resistance.

It was possible to reduce noise during the operation of shock absorbers and increase their service life - now it is almost a full cycle of the car's service.

The specialists are especially proud of the introduction of an unregulated wheel bearing - the unit has become much more reliable and does not require maintenance costs.

Tests of the modernized vehicles took place in the Samara and Ulyanovsk regions, as well as in the Krasnodar Territory.
The engineers noted that the introduced ones made it possible to significantly increase comfort, and the speed of passing the distances for testing increased.

Old, noisy (due to the chain drive) and gluttonous 8-valve gasoline engine VAZ-21214 with 83 hp. want to replace it with a more economical 1.6-liter engine with a timing belt and a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. New engine of Niva Urban VAZ-11186 is capable of developing 87 hp. with the same 8-valves, but at the same time providing 143 Nm of torque, against 129 Nm with today's engine. In addition to improving dynamics, such a replacement will provide significant fuel savings.

As for the transmission, so far there are three incomprehensible levers for urbanized citizens in the cabin. According to preliminary information, this year only one lever will be left, this is the gear lever. The “hand-out” and “lower” levers will be removed, instead, the four-wheel drive will be engaged by means of an electrofusion, simply by pressing a button. Electronic activation of the 4x4 all-wheel drive transmission will get rid of the hum and vibrations of the transfer case in the Niva Urban cabin. Recently, there are rumors that the new Niva Urban may receive a VAZ-21128 engine with a working volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 120 hp. This power unit is put on limited editions of the Lada Priora model in the Togliatti company "Super-Auto". There are even experimental samples of the new NIVA with such a motor. However, how much the Niva with such a motor will rise in price is not clear.

Minor changes in the exterior nevertheless have a significant impact on the impression that the car leaves. If you look at the photo of LADA Niva Urban, you will notice that the look of the classic car has become more modern. This variation received a modified radiator grill and plastic bumpers, made in body color. The plastic is scratch-resistant, so any off-road will be conquered without mechanical damage. It will also be possible to recognize the new Lada Niva Urban 4x4 2019 by the absence of chrome parts replaced by a strict black finish. The car also stands out for its 16-inch alloy wheels.

Interior convenience and comfort are in the base

The owner of the legendary car in the new variation can count on more:

  • The comfort of being in the compact cabin of LADA Niva Urban is provided by the basic option - a powerful climate system. Thermal glass keeps the car pleasantly cool for a long time. And the use of new materials for upholstery.
  • The slightly modified central tunnel received cup holders and a special handle with which the power windows are controlled and the heated exterior mirrors are electrically adjusted.
  • Driving comfort is further enhanced by the widened rear window wiping area, which improves the driver's visibility.

At the Moscow International Motor Show at the end of August 2014, AvtoVAZ presented the Lada 4 × 4 Urban - an urban modification of the world famous Niva, which has been produced unchanged since 1994, but if you do not take into account minor "updates" since 1975.

The three-door version of the "urbanized" crossover entered production at the facilities of a subsidiary of the Togliatti auto giant CJSC "Production of special vehicles VIS-AUTO" in October 2014.

And in February 2016, it was joined by a car with a five-door body.

In the appearance of Lada 4 × 4 Urban, one can clearly see the "family" features of the cult domestic SUV, but the chief designer of AvtoVAZ, Steve Mattin, did a small miracle by noticeably refreshing the appearance of the Niva. The square-angled proportions of the car are modernized with integrated front and rear bumpers made of plastic and partially painted in body color, as well as a black radiator grille with three horizontal bars. Large rear-view mirrors, blackened door handles, 16-inch alloy wheels, and even a curved tailgate wiper also contribute to the creation of the "urban" design.

The adaptation of the Niva to urban life somewhat affected its overall dimensions: length is 3640-4140 mm, height - 1640 mm, width - 1680-1690 mm. The distance between the axles for the three-door version is 2200 mm, for the five-door version it is 500 mm more, and their ground clearance is 220 and 205 mm, respectively.

Inside, the Lada 4 × 4 Urban is still a utilitarian car with an outdated design in all respects, although there are some changes compared to the standard version. The instrument panel, borrowed from Samara-2, harmoniously fits into the interior concept, is distinguished by its simple design and fairly clear transmission of information. The steering wheel has been revised - its diameter has decreased, and the rim has become thicker.
An old-fashioned console in the center is cut with straight and regular lines, and its concept is complete minimalism. Topped with a dashboard with rectangular ventilation and heating nozzles, an archaic "climate" control unit in the form of three "sliders" and lined up buttons that are responsible for turning on the air conditioner, turning off the heated rear window and other functions. On the floor tunnel there are three "family" levers (gearbox, transfer case and downshift), control panels for power windows and mirror adjustments, cup holders and a niche for small things.

The “urbanized” Lada 4 × 4 has front seats from the Samara-2 family, which are practically devoid of lateral support, but have an optimized profile and dense filling. The adjustment ranges are wide, while finding the optimal position is difficult, and the convenience of placement is far from the level of modern machines.

In the three-door version, the rear sofa is frankly cramped and uncomfortable, the margin of space is limited, and the missing head restraints indicate a low level of safety. In a five-door car, the "gallery" is noticeably more spacious, but still does not shine with comfort.

The interior of the Togliatti SUV is everywhere made of cheap and "oak" plastics to the touch, and the build quality is somewhat lame. Lada 4 × 4 Urban also has a lot of ergonomic flaws: the ignition lock is on the left side of the steering column, power windows and mirrors are controlled on the tunnel in the center.

The urban version of the 5-door "Niva-Urban" has a 420-liter luggage compartment, which is quite enough for everyday needs, which increases to 780 liters. The 3-door is content with a "hold" with a volume of 265 liters, increasing to 585 liters if necessary.
When the backrests of the second row of seats are folded down, a flat loading area and a comfortable space for bulky items are obtained. The car is equipped with a full-size "spare wheel" on a steel rim.

Specifications. Under the hood of Lada 4 × 4 Urban, a four-cylinder gasoline "aspirated" with a volume of 1.7 liters (1690 cubic centimeters) with an 8-valve gas distribution mechanism is installed longitudinally. The engine generates a maximum of 83 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 129 Nm of torque, which is available at 4000 rpm. In a pair to the power unit, an uncontested "mechanics" with five gears is offered, which directs traction to four wheels.

Despite the "urban" essence, the SUV is designed for a quiet ride - to accelerate to the first hundred, it takes 17-19 seconds, and beyond 137-142 km / h the speedometer needle will not move (this is the maximum speed).

In the combined driving mode, the "urbanized Niva" on average digests 9.7-9.9 liters of fuel every 100 kilometers, in urban conditions - 12.1-12.3 liters, and on a suburban highway - 8.3-8.5 liters.

Like the standard version of Lada 4 × 4, the Urban modification is equipped with an all-wheel drive transmission with a center differential that divides the torque between the axles in equal amounts. The car's off-road arsenal also includes a transfer case with a downshift and the option of a forced center differential lock.
In the future, the "urbanized" Lada 4 × 4 can acquire an electronic differential lock and lose the "hand-out", as a result of which there will be two less levers in the cabin.

"City" Lada 4 × 4 has a monocoque body, the wheels to which are attached by means of independent spring suspension on wishbones with hydraulic shock absorbers at the front and a dependent link structure with springs and hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear.
The steering is supplemented by a hydraulic booster, the braking system is represented by disc devices on the front wheels and drum devices on the rear.

Options and prices. In 2016, on the Russian market, Lada 4 × 4 Urban is sold in a single Lux configuration at a price of 511,700 rubles for a three-door version and from 552,100 rubles for a five-door version.
The standard equipment list includes: daytime running lights, fabric upholstery, improved insulation from external noise, two power windows, air conditioning, power steering, heated and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, athermal glass, 16 "alloy wheels, Isofix mounts and paintwork" metallic ".

While many fans of Niva are waiting for the release of a completely modified model, AvtoVAZ decided to restyle the old version, which will become a little more modern, but retain the general features in appearance, as well as the modest interior equipment. Niva Urban 2018 will continue to be the unpretentious workhorse that the old model was, and will be able to better overcome all kinds of off-road conditions.

The car will barely change in appearance. All the same, it will be a square apparatus, which does not have a relief at all, however, some new elements can still be found here.

The new model no longer has a flat bonnet - it has been supplemented with a small recessed strip. The angle of inclination of the windshield has slightly decreased, due to which it is now located almost perpendicular to the hood.

The photo clearly shows that the grille covering the radiator has been updated. Now it is a very bulging plastic insert with a lot of cutouts. Along the edges of it are placed exactly the same as before, round headlights with a simple halogen filling. Fog lights as well as cornering lights have moved to the top.

The bottom now has nothing but a massive metal body kit, which is also complemented by a plastic insert and protection for the subframe.

To find any changes on the side of the car, you need to be well versed in cars. There are very few obvious changes - new mirrors, discs and door handles. Everything else is the materials from which many elements are made. Now these are higher quality metal alloys that increase safety.

The new body is the most transformed at the rear. The shape of the tailgate has slightly changed, a strip of stop lights has been added, the dimensions have received a new shape. The body kit was also strengthened, which made it even more beautiful.

Unfortunately, what really required changes did not get them. We are talking about an interior in which there is nothing attractive at all. The new Niva Urban 4x4 2018 model year does not have any elements that increase comfort, does not acquire even the simplest multimedia and still gets off with cheap plastic and fabric, which are not very pleasant to the touch.

The most expensive part on the dashboard is the simplest possible audio system. It is located at the very bottom of the panel. Above it are several rows of deflectors, stove settings and other useful options.

Best of all, a tunnel is made in the car. It houses the settings and controls for the gearbox, chassis, parking brake and even two cupholders. Another hole is located at the very beginning, and it is quite spacious.

In addition to its basic functions, the steering wheel can also control the road lighting using two buttons on the spokes. The steering wheel itself looks unpleasant and feels about the same in the hands. Under a wide rectangular visor, dial gauges are placed, showing the speed at which the car is moving, as well as the revolutions developed by the motor. An on-board computer is not provided.



The armchairs are also as uncomfortable as possible. Fabric upholstery, rigid filling, lack of lateral support and generally any safety elements - all this is about the seats in the Niva. But in a rich configuration, you can find heating, which is quite unexpected. If you can still somehow sit in the front, then only children can normally sit in the back, since there is practically no legroom between the rows. The sofa itself is not wide and short, although it is designed to seat three passengers.

Also, the trunk has grown a little in the car, but it is still not enough to travel normally when there are more than two people in the car.

Specifications

Like the old Niva, Lada Urban 2018 does not have a wide range of motors, the characteristics of which will be at least somehow similar to what can be found in competitors. Only one gasoline power unit is put here, the volume of which is 1.7 liters, and the power is achieved only 83 forces. Together with all-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission, the car can accelerate to a hundred in an incredible 17 seconds, which is a very, very long time. At the same time, the consumption of such a system is enormous - up to 13 liters in the city and 7 on the highway. The advantages of the machine can be considered a transfer case and locking of all differentials that are only available in the chassis. As the test drive showed, the car is completely unsuitable for everyday trips both in the city and on the highway, but on the off-road few people can argue with it.

Options and prices

The minimum set of options for Niva Urban 2018 is represented by a stove, a cigarette lighter, manual adjustments and power windows, a fabric interior, an anti-lock system, a full set of off-road systems, power steering and other simple functions. The price for this version of the car will be 450 thousand.

To get the most charged modification, you will have to pay 80 thousand extra. This will also include an air conditioning system, heated seats for the first row, rear parking sensors, electric lifts for the front row windows, slightly better interior trim and one airbag.

Release date in Russia

According to representatives of AvtoVAZ, the start of sales in Russia will begin in January 2018. A few weeks later, the car will go to the markets of neighboring countries.
