The TOYOTA 2JZ engine produced by the corporation is a six-cylinder, in-line engine, the production of which began in 1990, replacing the M series engines produced before them. These motors were installed on cars with rear and front wheel drive and were located along the longitudinal axis of the machine. Two engine modifications were produced

  • 1JZ - with a volume of 2.5 liters
  • 2JZ - with a volume of 3 liters.

According to the manufacturer's accepted marking, which applies to the 2JZ GTE engine, the following is encrypted in it: 2 - the second engine in the series, JZ - a series of motors (since 1990, Toyota began to designate the series with two Latin letters). The following letters indicate the version: G - timing with two DOHC camshafts and extended valve timing. T - turbocharged. E - electronic control of fuel injection.

Engine types 2JZ

The 2JZ engine was produced in several modifications.

  • The 2JZ FSE series engine is analogous to the previous 1JZ series engine. It was produced from the beginning of the century until 2007. It has a capacity of 217 horses and a compression ratio of 11.3. The fuel is supplied to the cylinders by direct injection under pressure. This method of fuel supply does not practically improve technical characteristics, but has a positive effect on reducing fuel consumption and the content of harmful substances in the exhaust. The power of this modification is 217 horses. The 2JZ series motor has always been equipped with an automatic transmission. It was installed on Toyota Brevis, Progres, Crown
  • TOYOTA engine of the 2JZ GE series - this modification is the largest number produced. It has a power of 220 horses at 6,000 rpm and a torque of 298 Nm at 4,800 rpm. The injection of the fuel mixture is phased (sequential), that is, when the crankshaft is turned 180 °, a certain injector is triggered, corresponding to the injection phase. The classic operating order of the cylinders of the TOYOTA engine model 2JZ GE 1-4-3-2. The cylinder block is cast iron, the head is aluminum. At first, it was equipped with a standard DOHC timing belt, with two camshafts and with 4 valves per cylinder.

Subsequently, they began to install a gas distribution control system on it, DIS ignition, in which one ignition coil was intended for each pair of cylinders. This modification received the designation 2JZ GTE VVTi.

Compared to the 2JZ GE non VVT-i configuration, the engines equipped with a variable valve timing system have improved traction performance at reduced revs. Phase control is carried out using a special clutch installed on the camshaft.

With an increase in engine speed 2JZ GTE, the VVT-i valve opens and the camshaft changes its position in relation to the drive pulley and, accordingly, changing the position of the tappets, and they open the valves earlier and close later. Power from the 2JZ GE VVTi remains the same, but the torque increases with increasing revs.

The engine of the 2JZ GE model was equipped with TOYOTA Altezza, Aristo, Crown, MarkII, Chaser, Cresta, Progress, Soarer, SupraMKIV, Lexus 300 series IS, GS, SC cars. Currently, when converting cars, in some car services 2JZ is installed on UAZ and GAZelles.

  • The 2JZ GTE engine is perhaps the most advanced engine in the 2JZ range. In the nineties of the last century, the TOYOTA Supra MK4 began to come off the assembly line, on which they began to install the 2JZ GTE engine with VVTi.

Detailed description 2JZGTE

The engine of the 2JZ GTE modification was received in 1997 by installing a turbocharger with a side intercooler on the GE version. The first units, after modernization, received a torque of 435 Nm. Then, another upgrade was made by installing twin turbochargers. The 2JZ GTE modification with Twin Turbo increased torque to 451 Nm and power to 276 horses.

As a result, the 2JZ GTE has characteristics that differ from one market to another. In the United States and Europe, cars are supplied with power up to 320 hp, and for the Japanese domestic market, power was limited to 280 horses, in accordance with their legislation.

The 2JZ engine of the GTE VVTI modification is equipped with a sports mechanical six-speed gearbox V161 and V160 (Getrag engineers took part in the development), or a comfortable four-speed automatic A341E.

Basically, 2JZ GTE VVTi engine, installed by TOYOTA Aristo and Supra.

The idea for a three-liter engine was borrowed by Toyota from Nissan, with its RB series of engines. The inline engine works more balanced compared to V-shaped counterparts, for example, the same Toyota UZ FE.

In V-shaped engines, the pistons move in two planes at an angle relative to each other, hence the imbalance. These motors run longer, faster and the torque changes more smoothly.

As already mentioned, the power of the 2JZ engine of the GTE VVTi model can be easily increased almost three times without serious tuning, due to its thoughtfulness.

All the details that affect the operation of the engine under extreme loads have been taken into account - effective lubrication, valve mechanism, cast-iron cylinder block (instead of the common aluminum block), everything was designed and created to withstand extreme operating conditions. One of the interesting and extraordinary design solutions is that the diameter of the piston has the same value as its stroke.

Advantages and disadvantages

In addition to the already listed advantages of 2JZGTE - simple tuning to increase power, in-line arrangement of cylinders, a durable cast iron cylinder block, a few more points can be highlighted:

  • The crankshaft is forged.
  • Oversized earbuds.
  • The piston skirts have been grooved for splashing oil and cooling them more efficiently.
  • To reduce the physical compression ratio, recesses are made on the pistons.
  • Standard timing belt, oil and cooling pumps are capable of operating at an increase in power of up to a thousand horses if you do some tuning.

With so many advantages, it would be wrong to overlook the disadvantages:

  • Frequent breakdowns of the timing belt tensioner bracket
  • Insecure fastening of the oil seal of the pump of the oil system
  • Not very reliable fastening of the crankshaft pulley
  • Ineffective cylinder head purging
  • Periodic breakdowns of turbochargers, especially on the GTU Twin Turbo.

Typical malfunctions

As with everything related to mechanics, especially complex designs such as internal combustion engines, there are weak points in which malfunctions occur more often. This also applies to the 2JZ engines. The most common and perplexing thing is that the engine won't start. What are the reasons for this:

  • Motors of the JZ series are afraid of water, therefore, if after, for example, washing it does not start, then you need to unscrew and dry the candles.
  • Failure of the fuel pump is just as common as in all injection vehicles. In cases where the car suddenly stalled and does not start, or after checking the candles it still does not start, then the fuel pump may have broken down and it is necessary to test it.

In other cases, when the car will not start, it is best to contact a specialist. Or. If you have the skills to repair cars, you can find a manual on these units on the Internet, where there should be instructions for diagnostics and repair.

More than twenty years have passed since the launch of these motors in production, and they are still popular in the motorsport environment, tuning workshops and car services engaged in the conversion of cars, due to their reliability and good resource.

Many Toyota car models themselves have become landmark events in the history of the automotive industry. And the engine known under the JZ designation has become a legend among car owners, thanks to its reliability and power.

JZ Series Motors - General Features

Toyota JZ - six-cylinder in-line gasoline engines. These engines replace the old line of M. JZ powertrains are equipped with a DOHC type gas distribution mechanism, 24 valves and 6 cylinders, 4 valves for each. Engine sizes from 2.5 to 3 liters.

These engines were in production for almost 20 years, from 1990-2007, and were intended for vehicles with all- and rear-wheel drive configurations. In 2007, they were replaced by the GR series. In parallel, the 1VZ series was developed for executive cars and light SUVs.

There were different engine options in the line. You can find out whether a particular motor belongs to a certain modification by marking, it also reveals the details of the power unit device and the characteristics of the JZ engine. Decoding of markings:

Symbol Meaning
1, 2 Serial number in the series, engine displacement (2.5 and 3 liters, respectively).
JZ Belonging to the corresponding motor series.
G Means "forced" unit with a DOHC / VVT gas distribution mechanism, operating at wide "productive" stages.
T Turbocharged engine.
E Electronic fuel injection control.
S Direct injection.
F An economical engine with a camber angle between the exhaust and intake valves of about 22 degrees (as opposed to G, where this angle is 45 degrees or more)

G also means that each of the engine camshafts is driven by a chain or timing belt.

Thus, for example, the designation 2JZ-GTE denotes a gasoline engine of the JZ model series, three-liter, with four valves in each cylinder, assembled with a "wide" cylinder head, equipped with electronic injection control and turbocharging.

JZ Models

Over the history of production, several modifications of the unit have been created.

2.5 l (engine 1JZ) .:

3 liters (2JZ):

Important: units with the FE suffix, for example 1 JZ-FE, have never been produced, despite the claims of some car owners claiming that they own Toyota cars with 1JZ-FE.

Differences and features

1JZ-GTE

The first engine in the lineup was the 1JZ-GTE released in 1990. It had 6 valves and a working volume of 2491 cubic centimeters. As you can see from the markings, this is a turbocharged engine: it was equipped with two CT12A turbines, which reported a power of 280 hp. The development of such a powerful motor required the creation of a new block head that would be able to cope with the load on the engine. This task was solved by Toyota engineers in collaboration with colleagues from the Yamaha concern.

Photo of the 1JZ-GTE engine:

In 1996, GTE underwent an update resulting in:

  • the turbine was replaced with a more efficient CT15B;
  • equipped the motor with a VVT i clutch (more on it below);
  • modified the ignition control system.

Also, as a result of the restyling of this 1JZ model, the engine valve gaskets were changed to those covered with a protective layer of titanium nitride, which reduced the friction of the camshaft cams. This made it possible to extend the economy characteristics to the 1JZ GTE engine, make the curve on the graph smoother and reduce the rpm at full power. This led to a decrease in engine fuel consumption.

1JZ-GTE was installed on cars with a 5-speed R154 manual transmission, and on vehicles with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Specifications:

  • 280 hp at 6200 rpm;
  • moment 363 Nm at 4800 rpm;
  • motor compression 8.5: 1.

This motor was equipped with car models:

  • Chaser;
  • Cresta of some modifications;
  • Mark II;
  • Soarer;
  • Verossa;
  • Supra;
  • Altezza;
  • Crown.

The marking means an atmospheric, non-turbocharged engine. The technical characteristics of the 1JZ GE engine allowed it to produce 180 forces until 1995, and after modification in that year - 200.

Appearance:

Until 1996, 1 JZ GE engines were equipped with a distributor ignition, then the distributor was changed coils. The updated 1JZ GE also received a VVT-i unit, which changed the valve timing and made the power unit more economical and more powerful. The 1JZ-GE was equipped with an automatic transmission for 4 or 5 steps, the motor was not used with the "mechanics". The GE valve timing mechanism is driven, as in all JZ engines, by a belt, and one belt serves for all attachments under the hood.

  • Engine characteristics 1JZ GE:
  • 200 h.p. at 6000 rpm;
  • motor compression 10: 1;
  • moment 251 Nm at 4000 rpm

The engine deserves special attention due to its design.

Production of the 1JZ FSE began in 2000 and was equipped with a direct fuel injection system that supplies gasoline to the engine under high pressure. The injection, which received the D4 index, works on principles similar to those used in diesel engines.

Engine type 1JZ-FSE:

The engineers were faced with the task of ensuring efficiency and compliance with environmental standards without losing "horses" to the engine, for which a BC similar to the 1JZ-GE was used. The cylinder head did not differ, and the engine intake system underwent some modifications so that in a certain mode the power unit operated on a lean fuel mixture. This made it possible to reduce gasoline consumption by 1/5, and the power remained almost unchanged: the engine produced 197 forces.

The main differences between the Toyota unit with an injection unit and fellow engines in the lineup:

  • creates pressure in the gasoline supply system up to 120 bar, which is almost 40 times higher than that of the fuel pump;
  • there is a special notch on the piston bottom that directs the mixture to the engine spark plug;
  • vortex nozzles are used in the design, capable of creating a fuel torch of different shapes, depending on the engine operating mode: when operating at "maximum" - conical, when operating on a lean mixture - narrow;
  • vertical intake channels are used, by means of which a flow directing the mixture to the candle is formed in the engine cylinders;
  • the accelerator pedal has no direct communication with the throttle valve, the control is electronic;
  • The problem of emission of large volumes of NO by the engine is solved by a multistage system of engine catalysts, combining conventional three-component with catalytic converters.

"Diesel-like" design made the engine more capricious in relation to the brothers from the lineup. The most problematic points:

  • due to design features, the engine has poor access to the spark plugs. The developers tried to compensate for this shortcoming by installing durable platinum spark plugs on the central cylinders of the engine;
  • the motor is very sensitive to moisture ingress;
  • low-quality fuel leads to breakage of the plunger pair in the high-pressure pump. The steam is lubricated with fuel, and if in Japan the latter is always of high quality, in domestic conditions differences in the composition and quality of gasoline can quickly "kill" the engine pump;

Interesting: this disadvantage is due to the significantly higher lubricating properties of Japanese gasolines. In the Land of the Rising Sun, special additives are used that improve the characteristics of fuel in the context of lubrication up to 11 times in comparison with domestic fuel mixtures. As a result, owners of Toyota cars with a JZ-FE engine equipped with a high-pressure fuel pump may one day face the need to replace the pump (approximately 1000 USD) and fuel injectors, which cost around 400 USD each.

  • one drive belt of the engine serves all the attachments, in addition, this unit is made not in Japan, but in the USA, and is inferior in quality and durability to Japanese counterparts.

Toyota does not recommend driving on gasoline below 95 for engines, but in practice, Russian car owners pour a high-quality 92 into it without much damage to the engine. With high-quality and timely maintenance, the engine can move up to 250 thousand km, after which prophylaxis is usually required: replacement of piston rings, valve stem seals. If the car owner changed the timing belts on time, used high-quality fuel and oil, this is all there is to it, you can do without overhaul.

Specifications:

  • 197 forces;
  • torque 250 Nm at 3800 rpm;
  • compression 11.

1JZ-FSE was installed on Crown, Verossa, etc.

Motor appearance:

This is a very common power unit of the "three-liter" branch of JZ engines. The naturally aspirated engine is capable of delivering up to 220 horsepower.

The engine is equipped with a cast iron cylinder block with aluminum cylinder head and sequential injection. Initially, it was equipped with a conventional DOHC gas distribution system, but later the engineers replaced it with the aforementioned VVT, and also replaced the ignition in the engine with a new one, with one coil serving two cylinders.

Specifications:

  • 220 forces;
  • moment 304 Nm at 4000 rpm;
  • compression 10.5-11.

The letter T in the engine name indicates the presence of turbocharging. 2JZ-GTE - the most powerful of the "three-liter" series, equipped with two turbines with an intercooler module. The cylinder block is cast iron, with an aluminum head. The engine was made only at its own Japanese factories in 1991-2002.

Appearance:

This unit was created as a "response" by Nissan to the RB26DETT engine designed and implemented by the latest, which successfully participated in various racing competitions. Accordingly, it was intended to be used in racing cars, although "civilian" models were also equipped with this engine. For a normal quiet ride, variants were produced with this engine and a reliable 4-speed "automatic" A341E, and for "sports" - with a 6-speed "mechanics" developed by Toyota and Getrag.

In 1997, the gas distribution system was replaced by VVT-i, which added power to the engine. So, double turbocharging allowed to raise that from the original 226-227 "horses" to an impressive 276, and the new gas distribution gave an additional increase to an impressive 321 units.

The export and "domestic" variants differed in the models of turbochargers, camshafts used, injector performance, and in the export models of these engines, ceramic components (calculated for the domestic Japanese market) were replaced with steel ones.

Specifications:

  • up to 321 strength;
  • compression ratio 9;
  • moment up to 451 Nm at 3600 rpm

2JZ-FSE

Like its smaller cousin, the 1JZ, it is a direct petrol injection engine. Structurally, the engines are very similar, there are differences in the volumes and the compression ratio created. The unit also shows improved efficiency and environmental performance.

Filmed:

Specifications:

  • up to 220 horsepower:
  • moment up to 294 Nm at 3600 rpm;
  • compression 11.

2JZ-FSE is always coupled with only a four-speed "automatic".

VVT-i

This abbreviation hides the phrase Variable Valve Timing - intelligence, or the intelligent valve timing system, developed by Toyota engineers.

The system has been installed on engines since the 1996 model year.

A special VVT-i clutch controls the gas distribution:

The mechanism first works to provide traction to the engine at low revs. As the latter grows, the oil pressure in the system also increases, which opens the VVT valve. After opening this, the camshaft rotates at a certain angle. The specially shaped cams slightly change the timing of the opening / closing of the engine valves when turning the crankshaft - they open earlier and close later. This adds more torque and power to the engine.

Tuning

Tuning (from the English tuning) - making changes to the unit in order to fine-tune or remove more power. Engines of the JZ series are loved by car owners not only for their reliability and power, but also for their good adaptation to tuning. There are ways to get more power from both 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter engines. But it is important to understand: a more voluminous version of the engine is better suited for tuning.

This is due to a simple rule: the less the engine is forced per liter of volume, the better. Those. The 1JZ will get a lot of stress during tuning. And, although even in the stock version its piston group allows you to "remove" up to 500 horsepower, it is still desirable to tune the older version, although it is more expensive.

With the afterburner, 1 JZ has a number of significant problems:

  • overheating of the engine when associated with design features (passability of the antifreeze channels, limited "power" of the radiator);
  • overheating of the oil.

Tuners trying to overclock this engine often encounter overheating of the 6 cylinder engine. Therefore, it is better to choose something from the 2JZ line as a tuning platform. It is able to withstand up to 1000 "horses" without modifying the piston group, the engine's oil and antifreeze pumps also cope with such a load.

The main directions of tuning:

  • Turbines.

Installing (or improving an existing in the engine) turbo kit is the first thing that JZ owners are puzzled with when they decide to force the heart of the car. Experts recommend turbines HKS GT-SS, Garrett GT2860RS or GT35R (single-turbo version) and BNR34 N1.

An intercooler and a cold intake system are also desirable: the lower the intake air temperature, the better.

  • Fuel system.

In pursuit of power, fuel injectors are often changed, which is logical: stock ones may not cope with the increased volume of the fuel mixture pumped through the engine. For "acceleration" to 500 hp, for example, you should take 620cc injectors - with a small margin.

Together with the injectors, they sometimes change the fuel rail of the engine, install hoses with a larger section, efficient pumps (for example, two Walbro 255 l / h, working in parallel).

  • Cooling system

In an overclocked engine, the antifreeze will have to be specially cooled, which will require a more efficient radiator than in the drain. Experts recommend Koyo brand products, showing performance at least 30% higher than the "native" radiator. You will also need a good oil cooler.

For simplicity, there are radiator kits for oil and antifreeze lines on sale. Cooling also applies to the gearbox, especially if it is automatic: to operate at increased loads, it should be equipped with radiators or special electric fans. A manual transmission needs oil coolers and external oil pumps.

  • Exhaust system.

The tuners put a large diameter exhaust (85 mm), use Japanese systems with a downpipe to the turbines and a resonator to the catalyst.

  • Intake manifold.

Filters of zero resistance from reliable manufacturers are installed.

  • Electronics.

To operate at high power, a new on-board computer will be required to ensure system consistency.

The total cost of all work can be up to several tens of thousands of dollars. It is important to understand that you cannot save on spare parts for tuning, this is fraught with engine failure.

It should be remembered: engine tuning leads to appropriate changes in the gearbox, chassis, suspension, brakes, so that they correspond to the new "agility" of the car.

For Toyota cars, several types of power units are produced, but m is the most famous. The 1JZ engine, according to the owners, is most inclined to tuning. This 1JZ internal combustion engine is a design in which cylinders with pistons are located in one row.

Their number is equal to six pieces, which made it possible to obtain a working volume of 2500 cm 3. The 1JZ GTE engine has a cast iron block, in the head of which four valves are installed for each cylinder.

A belt was used in the timing drive, and the quality of the product is such that it is recommended to replace it after 100 thousand kilometers. If it suddenly breaks off, in 1JZ it is not at all scary, the "meeting" of the pistons with the valves will not happen. Such a nuisance can only happen with a modification of the FSE. The Toyota 1JZ engine features an intake manifold with variable geometry.

In 1996, the developers proposed to make changes to the cylinder head, which received the VVT-i system, which allows you to change the valve timing during the intake of the fuel mixture. Also, after the modernization, the 1JZ engine received changes in the cooling system, some other nodes.

The 1JZ valves are adjusted in the old fashioned way by installing an appropriately sized shim. Such a procedure on the FE is performed approximately once per 100 thousand kilometers.

Powertrain characteristics

Let's take a closer look at the technical characteristics of motors in this series:

  1. The engines were produced from 1990 to 2007 inclusive.
  2. The piston has a diameter of 86 mm with a stroke of 71.5 mm.
  3. The compression ratio can range from 10 to 11 units.
  4. Power for different modifications is in the range of 170-280 liters. with.
  5. The mass of the power unit is approximately 210 kg.
  6. Fuel consumption 1JZ GTE - from 9.8 to 15 liters per 100 km of run, depending on the conditions of its operation.
  7. Complies with environmental requirements according to EURO 2-3 standards.
  8. The motor runs without repairs for more than 400 thousand kilometers.

The FE fuel is gasoline with an octane rating of 92–95. You can use AI-98 gasoline, but it will be more difficult to start a 1JZ GTE on this fuel, although the power indicators of the engine will slightly improve. In the cylinder head of 1JZ engines, two camshafts are installed, which are driven by a belt drive.

This innovation has a positive effect on the vibration of the 1JZ GTE, it is completely absent. At the beginning of production, the 1JZ GTE engines were installed only on Toyota models with rear-wheel drive, but further modernization allowed them to be used on the company's cars with all-wheel drive.

About engine maintenance

Full control at all stages of production, the use of quality parts in the manufacture of 1JZ GTE engines allow owners to continue operating a car for a long time without any malfunctions. It is only necessary to carry out maintenance work on the 1JZ GTE engines in a timely manner. This means the following operations:

  • replacement of motor lubricant;
  • replacement of the air filter;
  • checking, servicing spark plugs;
  • adjustment of the gap between the tappets and valve stems.

This is not a complete list of FE maintenance work, it depends on the operating conditions of the 1JZ GTE engines. In the 1JZ GTE VVT-i lubrication systems, approximately 4.8 liters of engine oil are poured. The viscosity of the lubricating fluid can be from 0W30 to 10W30.

Advice: for new power units, it is advisable to use semi-synthetic or synthetic oils.

After reading the operating instructions for 1JZ GTE engines, the owner learns that the oil needs to be changed after 10,000 km. In fact, it can be reduced, it depends on the operating conditions of Toyota with the 1JZ GTE, other external factors of the use of the machine.

Important! When changing the type of engine lubricant, a thorough flushing of the power unit lubrication system is required.

A few words about engine modifications

  • The first modifications of the 1JZ had a power indicator equal to 180 hp. with. at 4800 rpm. The introduction of a new system for distributing the fuel mixture allows you to get high results even at low revs. The modernization of the power unit made it possible to raise the power already up to 200 liters. with.
  • The 1JZ GTE VVT-i engine was used with manual gearboxes. The 1JZ GE ignition system was also upgraded, it became a reel-to-reel one, which influenced the reliability of the 1JZ GTE engine.
  • The next modification of the 1JZ GTE VVT-i engine received a new VVT-i system for the distribution of intake and exhaust gases, that is, the valve timing was changed. This allowed to reduce the fuel consumption of the JZ GTE VVT-i engine. The 1JZ GE VV-i engine with such changes made it possible to increase dynamic performance while reducing gasoline consumption. ICE 1JZ GE VV-i of the second generation received an increase in power by about 20 liters. from., 1JZ GE non VVT-i will not give an increase in power.
  • The 1JZ FSE D4 engine is an internal combustion engine with a capacity of 200 liters. with., which is achieved using direct injection. Years of issue - 2000-2007.
  • The 1JZ FSE engines were released in early 2000. Direct injection of the fuel mixture increased environmental performance, reduced gasoline consumption without losing power performance.
  • ICE 1JZ GTE TT is a turbocharged version of the power unit. Turbochargers 1JZ GTE TT are installed in one row. The TTI modification made it possible to obtain an increase in power up to 280 liters. with.

Possible malfunctions

If the 1JZ GE does not start, the problem may arise from wet spark plugs. 1JZ GE may not start after washing, stay in the cold for a long time. Also, 1JZ GE does not start when high-voltage wires fail. If 1JZ GE troit, then the problem should be looked for in the ignition coils, the VVT-i valve. With a noticeable increase in gasoline consumption, you should pay attention to the condition of the oxygen sensor.

Sometimes, when operating engines with VVT-i, an extraneous knock can be heard. This is the fault of the clutch of this device, the resource of which is not very large. This is also possible if the bearing in the belt tensioner fails.

With a fairly high mileage, the consumption of FE engine oil may increase, the reason for this may be the wear of the piston rings, valve oil seals. Experts also note that the first CTE jizet was notable for problems with the pump.

On FE versions, the injection pump can sometimes be the weak link. The description of possible problems of TT or CTU can be continued, but it is better to devote another article to this. In conclusion, it should be noted that tuning 1JZ GE can be done without much material costs. Most often, they resort to installing supercharging, but there are options for mechanical modification of motors.

The 1JZ-GTE engine is equipped with a pair of turbochargers that work simultaneously, the system is called "twin-turbo ST12A", and an intercooler is installed in the engine wing. The 1JZ-GTE engine is considered a first generation engine and has a compression force of up to 8.5.

Yamaha took part in the development of the cylinder head, the logo with the image of this company is printed on the timing belt. The second generation of such an engine was modernized: with the VVT-I system, an increase in the compression force to 9 and a new CT15B turbocharger, which surpassed its predecessors in size. Such updates have significantly improved the engine:

  • equalized the torque curve;
  • reduced gas mileage;
  • reduced the speed of the maximum engine.

1JZ-GTE, can be equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission, or a five-speed manual transmission.

Engine details

The 1JZ-GTE engine, is an invention of Toyota and has six cylinders.

2500 cm 3 - stable working volume of the motor.

As a rule, such an engine is not limited in power, it is capable of delivering from 280 to 320 hp. Therefore, many cars that have 1JZ-GTE have become great sports cars. With the installation of additional equipment, the power can be increased to 400 hp / t, but this number is not a limit either. The revision consists in installing additional air filters and increasing the boost pressure.

Engine performance

Installation on cars

The following cars are equipped with a 1JZ-GTE motor:

  1. Toyota chaser.
  2. Toyota supra.
  3. Toyota verossa.
  4. Toyota Cresta.
  5. Toyota mark2.
  6. Toyota mark2 WB.
  7. Toyota soaser.
  8. Toyota crown.

Weak side of the motor

The main disadvantage of the 1JZ-GTE engine is the place where the plugs are installed. They are located directly on the valve cover, which heats up quite strongly, thereby causing overheating of the coils, each candle is equipped with them. The owner of such an engine must remember this fact and, if necessary, pay attention.

If you want to use the engine as long as possible, it is of great importance to use 98 gasoline!

Choice between two generations

  1. If you are planning a trip around the city and there is no desire to participate in drag races, then it is better to choose the 1JZ-GTE VVTI. The engine of the second generation is more agile up to 125 km / h, compared to the first. When driving quietly around the city, the fuel consumption is 14 liters, if you press the gas pedal more often, then 17 liters. In my experience driving on the highway, the consumption was 11 liters, but less can be achieved.
  2. If you objectively look at both motors, you can say that they are almost the same. But due to the increased piston stroke by 2JZ, the torque will be significantly higher. My personal preference is the VVTI, but the twin turbo 2JZ does more in two nozzles than the CT15 does in one.

The JZ series among Japanese motors became famous for its incompletely disclosed capabilities. For tuners, such engines are just a godsend. The 1JZ GTE is a turbo version of the classic 1JZ GE. It operates on two turbines, developed jointly with Yamaha.

Description of the engine 1JZ GTE

The most powerful Jayzet motor. The 1JZ GTE is a turbocharged version that develops 280-320 hp.

The engine was first released in 1990. Since 1996, they began to refine the cylinder head, new intelligent systems for switching the phases of the gas distribution station and cooling appeared. In 2003, the "six" 1JZ GTE was replaced by an aluminum and more modern 4GR-FSE.

The 1JZ GTE engine is a turbo version that inflates 0.7 bar. On this motor, the piston group was replaced, and the cylinder head was developed jointly with the Yamaha company. The motor was fitted with standard camshafts. In 1996, a modification was carried out, as a result of which two turbines were replaced by one. The VVTi system appeared for a smoother increase in revs, and the compression ratio was increased to 9. The power of the power unit after restyling did not change - 280 hp. with. However, the potential made it possible to increase the indicator to 320 liters. with. without a full-fledged chip.

The first generation of the engine used two turbines with parallel compressors (twin-turbo). The intercooler was under the wing of the car, from where it was connected to the motor. The second generation used one larger CT 15B turbo. Notably, the latest universal coated valve gaskets are now available. It was titanium nitride, which reduces the friction of the camshaft lugs.

The 1JZ GTE engine has 4 valves per cylinder, the timing drive is of a belt type. A broken belt does not bend the valve (except for the FSE version), which makes the 1JZ GTE a motor with a long service life. There are no hydraulic lifters on the engine.

Service regulations

  1. Change the engine oil every 5-10 thousand kilometers. Fill in 4.5-5.4 liters of oil, depending on the drive of the car. It is recommended to decide in advance what kind of oil to pour. The characteristics of the lubricant should be within the range of 0W-30 / 10W-30;
  2. Replace the timing belt at least every 100 thousand kilometers;
  3. It is imperative to adjust the valves every 100 thousand km manually, using dummy washers.
  • belt tension;
  • ignition timing;
  • state of the cylinder head;
  • the state of the turbocharging system;
  • EFI fuel injection system;
  • electrical equipment.

Learn more about problems and solutions:

  1. If Dzhizet's "six" does not start, you must first check the candles. They can be filled in, then you need to unscrew the elements and dry. In general, this turbo version is afraid of cold weather and moisture, so washing must be carried out carefully;
  2. If the engine is troit, then the main reason for the restyled version is associated with the ignition coils. In addition, on engines with a new Toyota gas distribution system, the reason may be hidden in the valve;
  3. If the speed is floating, it is necessary to check the valve of the gas distribution system, the XX sensor or the throttle valve. In most cases, the motor again functions like a clock after flushing the clogged elements;
  4. If the engine consumes a lot of fuel, the cause must be looked for in the oxygen sensor. It is also recommended to check the quality of the filters;
  5. If the internal combustion engine knocks, then this is more often caused by a failure of the gas distribution clutch. Unfortunately, its resource is small. Valves requiring manual adjustment can also knock. Excessive sounds are also created by worn connecting rod bushings, as well as a problematic belt tensioner bearing;
  6. If there is a high oil consumption, then this is due to mileage. This problem is standard on 1JZ GTE, associated with wear on the valve stem seals and rings. Although it would be more correct not to do major repairs at very high mileage, but replace it with a contract one.

One of the problematic parts of the 1JZ GTE is the water pump. The pump does not last long on jayzets, as does the viscous coupling. Another problem lies in the position of the second generation engine spark plugs. Each of the sparking elements is endowed with an individual coil. This causes the valve cover to overheat while the motor is running.

The engine oil pump is also considered a problematic part that needs to be replaced earlier than announced. The reason for this is poor quality oil

Tuning options for the 1JZ GTE engine

The turbo version is rarely modified, since the potential of the engine as a whole is revealed. As for converting 1JZ GTE into 2JZ, the game is not worth the trouble. First of all, the height of the block will not allow this - the size differs by 14 mm, which will force the connecting rods to be shortened. For an internal combustion engine of this type, this is unacceptable, because the load on the piston group will increase and there will be a tendency to oil consumption.

Putting on the Valbro 255 pump, removing the catalyst and building the exhaust on 3-inch pipes, it will be an effective tuning for the turbo unit. The exhaust system should not have constrictions, you will also need to take care of the cold air intake and increase the boost from 0.7 to 0.9 bar. Further modernization implies already new brains, a special bus controller and an intercooler. The boost is increased to 1.2 bar and the engine power is increased by an extra 100 hp. with.

The Walbro fuel pump is capable of pumping up to 255 liters of fuel per hour. This is a powerful unit that is often used in the tuning process.

The next stage of tuning, which will greatly reduce the engine resource, is working with a Garrett turbine. Paired with it, you need a regular three-row radiator and a separate oil radiator. You also need to take care of the cold air intake, 80 mm damper and reinforced fuel hoses. The injector should produce 800 cc and the exhaust should be built on 3.5-inch pipes. Thus, it will be possible to increase the power of the internal combustion engine up to 1000 liters. with.

List of modifications of the internal combustion engine series 1JZ

Consider the engine versions of this series, in addition to the 1JZ GTE:

  • 1JZ-FSE D4 is a power unit with a direct injection system. The compression ratio of the engine is 11, the power is 200 liters. with. The modification was produced in the period 2000-2007;
  • 1JZ-GE is the basic atmospheric version of the series. Two generations of this ICE were produced. First with a capacity of 180 liters. with. and a compression ratio of 10. The second generation came with VVTi, modified connecting rods and a different cylinder head. The compression ratio was increased to 10.5. The distributor was replaced with ignition coils. As a result, the aspirated power increased to 200 liters. with.

The 1JZ-FSE D4 version is equipped with a direct injection system. A modification was produced in the period 2000-2007
