It can be called with absolute certainty the first domestically produced SUV. Despite the fact that the concept of the car was to make a high-speed car with good cross-country ability, it failed because of the Zaporozhye engine, the car came out pretty good for a domestic SUV.

The unique features of LUAZ for that time were:

Modification of units and tuning of the LUAZ engine

If the standard engine is fully operational and there are no complaints about it, there is enough power and fuel consumption has not yet increased over the years of operation, then it is quite possible to do with your own power unit. But if this is not the case, which is quite likely, then you can use a donor, because it is pointless to resort to repairing such an old engine.

The so-called "heart" of the car was not quite suitable for this car even then, let alone now. No modifications and upgrades will help here, the only correct solution would be to completely replace the power unit with another, for example, from the VAZ family. Many fans of this brand have been successful in making friends with LUAZ with a 1200 cc engine from.

Of course, you need to sweat a little, because it is easy to install an engine from a "penny", but it is quite difficult to coordinate its operation with other systems. The problem begins with the fact that the oil pan from the Zhiguli is not included in the standard LUAZ protection due to its convex shapes.

This problem is solved by preserving the configuration of the standard security sheet, for which first the oil pump on the donor engine is changed. As a result of this, the pump, namely, its oil receiver, if compared with the classic one, is decently raised.

It remains only to fit the pallet. This protection implies the replacement of at least two more parts, because the diameter of the pulleys on the crankshaft and pump will be too large. Consequently, the pulleys will have to be ground from scratch. The standard generator with its 40 amperes does not at all fit into the current idea of ​​the energy consumption of a car.

To do this, you need to use at least a unit from an engine with 85 amperes from the same VAZ 2101. Slight difficulties may arise with the connection of the transmission and the engine, as a result of which you will have to adjust the shape of the bell to match its retractors. It will not be superfluous to install a clutch from an inexpensive foreign car as a consequence.

Interwheel blocking is also indispensable. A rear differential is sorely needed and is fairly straightforward to fit into the front main pair. In this case, when the stern is firmly connected, the transmission is completely blocked. Both drives can be modified in the same way.

Before removing and modernizing the panel, you can start replacing the stove - the old one often fails and does not justify its purpose at all. But do not be zealous with tuning the panel - the maximum that can be done with it in order to maintain ergonomics is to cover it with leather or chrome.

The motivation for tuning the cabin should be, first of all, safety. Consideration should be given to installing comfortable seating. The rear seats can be sacrificed in favor of a roll cage. Although the car seems small, there is a lot of space inside the cabin and there is plenty of room for imagination. It all depends on the operating conditions in which you will use the car and, of course, on your ingenuity and creativity.

It would seem that market times are in the yard - everything can be bought for money, but go ahead, and today there are segments that are completely not covered by the offer of automakers. For example, have you tried to find a compact SUV in a car dealership that is both high-speed and "all-round" - small, lightweight, unpretentious? Some dealers will offer you something stylish, fast and comfortable, but completely helpless in the mud and snow. Other sellers will quickly pick up a couple of real "crooks" for you, but they will be heavy and cumbersome, inappropriate both on the highway and on the mountain trails. And the author of the brilliant idea, the embodiment of which is reflected on these pages, equipped the notebook "rogue" - the kid LuAZ-969 - with a powerful engine and reliable units. And the plumage from the "cube" Mercedes G - no claim to show-off, but a subtly played out external similarity of two utilitarian cars.

Engine replaced by a VAZ-21083 engine with a volume of 1.5 liters and a capacity of 69 liters. with. The radiator of the cooling system also fits under the hood (the standard V4 "Volynyanka" was cooled with air). The new unit allows the car to easily maintain a cruising speed of 130 km / h.

Transmission redesigned based on the characteristics of the new engine. The main type of drive is now not front, but rear. The longitudinally installed gearbox is borrowed from the Togliatti "classics", the transfer case is from the legendary GAZ-69 all-terrain vehicle. The plug-in front axle, as well as the constantly engaged rear axle, are "military" geared, from the UAZ-469.

Exterior modified using body parts from Mercedes G-Сlass. Some German parts (fenders and hood) were reduced in the right places, the radiator grille and wheel arch flanges were used without significant alterations. Wide footrests make it easy to get into the passenger compartment.

Interior has the ergonomics of a completely high-speed car, taking into account the peculiarities of off-road operation. The front seats are from BMW, the rear sofa is a folding seat from the trunk of the Volga station wagon GAZ-2402. The hard metal top is assembled from parts of Peugeot and YerAZ minibuses; it can be removed in dry weather.

In this article we will talk about a car such as the LuAZ-969m. This is a light SUV, the production of which began very far back in 1975. Then it was a really good purchase, especially for a villager, because, despite its awkward appearance, the car decently copes with all the bumps and obstacles. In addition, the car is unpretentious either to fuel or oil, absolutely nothing. At the moment, it is almost impossible to meet this "jeep" on the roads, however, tuning LuAZ 969m, like any other SUV, is very widespread. First, let's see what the standard equipment does not suit the owners.

Disadvantages of Luaz

Most people believe that any Soviet car is an evil that must be feared and avoided. In fact, a small, well, sometimes a little more than a small list of improvements can make a decent car out of this creation. Let's see what caused this "bias".

Engine

  • He is very gluttonous. In order to drive a hundred kilometers on a perfectly flat road, you will have to burn at least 14 liters of gasoline, and this with a volume of 1.2 liters.
  • Air cooling. Because of this, it is very noisy, and also does not tolerate high revs, which have to be maintained when overcoming an obstacle. As a result, overheating, however, is quite rare.
  • Low power. Even with such characteristics, 40 horses for a 1.2 liter engine is simply ridiculous, hence such a consumption, we will consider fixing this problem a little later.
  • A carburetor that just constantly pours fuel into the cylinders. This has a negative effect on both operation and engine starting, especially when the engine is cold.
  • Let's refer this to the power plant, since the gearboxes on each wheel are the transmission. Honestly, it is difficult to come up with something more unreliable, because the resource of this node does not exceed even 80,000 kilometers.

Suspension, steering

  • High-profile rubber, which promotes swaying on the road, from which handling suffers greatly. This also includes the tire width of 16.5 cm, which is very small. Naturally, it is almost impossible to overcome some kind of mud or snow on it. Yes, another point is the diameter of the discs is 15 inches. On irregularities I must say thank you for this, but overclocking is not very happy.
  • Huge play in the steering wheel. A worm gear is installed here. Sometimes there is a feeling that it was collected from what was at the plant at that moment.
  • Difficulty steering. In total, there are 8 rods, each of which has 2 ball ends, in total - a huge backlash, as well as constant maintenance, the solution to the problem is only high-quality parts, or you can make ball bearings yourself on a lathe.
  • Small wheel arches and low suspension travel, as it is made on the arms.

Salon

  • Small seats, low, which do not allow you to look at the road next to the car, unless your height is about 2 meters, but then there will be problems with the ceiling.
  • Gasoline stove. Some people like this moment, but most are not.
  • Low noise and thermal insulation, which is practically nonexistent.

Perhaps that's all. There are still minor flaws, but we can write them off as the fact that the ideal car did not exist, and it will never exist.

Engine tuning

Let's start with the fact that the engine needs to be modified. The reasons have been named, it remains to eliminate them. Let's run a little ahead and say that someone is modifying the standard engine, and someone is changing it to a VAZ one. We will consider each of the options separately.

Refinement of the standard motor

Tuning the LuAZ 969m engine is primarily aimed at improving reliability and reducing fuel consumption. Therefore, there is a clear list of measures that apply not only to this motor, but to any other.

  • Installing a different carburetor. Adapters for DAAZ 2105 are on sale.This will not only help to increase the reliability of the engine during cold starts, but also reduce fuel consumption, but slightly. In addition, in the event of a breakdown, it will not be difficult to find spare parts for it.
  • Installing another air filter. Perhaps, the "filter pan", like that of VAZs, does not cope with its duties. And the engine needs to "breathe deeply".
  • Grinding cylinder heads. As you know, MeMZ 968M has a V-shaped engine, so the actions will have to be carried out with both heads. To do this, you need to grind off the landing plate by 1-2 millimeters. Due to this, the combustion chambers will be reduced, which means that the compression ratio will increase, which, in turn, will lead to a significant reduction in fuel consumption.

Do not be too zealous, because practice has shown that grinding more than 2.5 mm leads to breaking off the head fastening pins, so the explosion becomes so strong. The nominal compression ratio is 7.4, while after grinding it rises to 9. This is a critical value, exceeding which will damage the engine, possibly even burn out the pistons.

  • After grinding, it is imperative to use 92nd gasoline, which means that it is necessary to replace the piston rings with better ones. In addition, the temperature regime of operation will also increase, so you need to think about forced cooling.
  • Some craftsmen bore cylinders for a 79 mm piston, from 2106, therefore, the volume increases to 1.3 liters. Power in this case increases up to 60 horsepower.
  • It is advisable to split the exhaust system into 2 exhaust pipes, which will allow more fine tuning of the engine operation. Since the ventilation of the cylinders will be greatly improved

Perhaps this is everything with the engine, more and nothing will be achieved. In addition, all these works are fraught with overheating at the most inopportune moment.

Installation of the VAZ engine

So, let's see what is needed in order to install a power unit from the classics under the hood. First of all, you need to understand that it must be installed exactly horizontally, because otherwise the gearbox will not snap into place, and the input shaft will bite, which will lead to its cutting off.

In general, there are few of those who really did such alterations. However, those who did this unanimously say that it is necessary to install the engine from the Niva, that is, 1.7 liters. Yes, 80 horsepower is good, but the mass of the engine and attachments exceeds 150 kilograms.

One craftsman, so to speak, Kulibin, found a solution in the engine from 21083, which solved the problem of overweight. In addition, the volume of 1.5 liters is the most optimal for such a light car. It is also necessary to note the comparative compactness of 21083 relative to the Nivov power unit. Yes, there are some prejudices regarding the timing belt, but this is all gossip and lies, if everything is changed in a timely manner, then nothing happens.

On top of all this, let's not forget about the transmission. The standard gearbox from 2108 is perfectly friends with the razdatkoy from LuAZ. Another advantage is the very small crankcase, which greatly affects the cross-country ability.

Suspension tuning

As mentioned above, the car's suspension is completely independent, which significantly reduces its travel. There is one radical solution here - the installation of bridges, continuous bridges. Most will consider that this is impossible, however, there are a lot of precedents. In this case, it is not advisable to move the main drive back, because the front drive, as you know, is several times higher.

Many people make a suspension lift, but this is unnecessary, because the ground clearance is already over 28 centimeters, especially with the 21083 engine.

Salon tuning

Inside, everything will have to be peeled off, cleaned of mastic and re-insulated. It is better to use a metallized material because it is much more resistant to corrosion. After that, it is necessary to thoroughly re-coat all joints with mastic, such as "Cordon".

Above already mentioned uncomfortable seating. Which, in principle, can be replaced with absolutely any, you just have to digest the fasteners. It is advisable to raise them by 10-15 centimeters, then the landing will be just perfect.

A mandatory measure is to strengthen the roof guides. Otherwise, the car runs the risk of folding in half on bumps. It is also advisable to replace the steering wheel, because the standard one has a too thin rim, which is fraught with slipping of the fingers. And in general, if a motor from a VAZ is installed, then this will fundamentally change the interior decoration, but also the solution with a stove. Why? Because this engine is water-cooled, which means that the heater radiator can be installed in the passenger compartment, a fan can be installed next to it, after which it will be warm in the passenger compartment.

In the same case, it is desirable to install a panel from the classic, or from 2108. This will allow you to place a tachometer, which, I must say, is very important. In addition, the temperature sensor is a novelty for LuAZ owners, so to speak, a curiosity that will have to get used to.

Conclusion

Let's summarize. So this is a car that has conflicting feelings. On the one hand, this is truly an SUV that deserves more. On the other hand, it is almost impossible to make something worthwhile out of it without replacing the power unit. In addition, it is practically impossible to find spare parts for such a unit, not to mention the gearboxes. Tuning LuAZ 969M photos show something that cannot be conveyed in words. After all, you must definitely tell the world about your creation.

The ground clearance is higher, the driving wheels and traction on them are more, the shafts are stronger, and the tires are meaner. This was also - the cheapest and most uncompromising SUV of the Soviet period.

Under certain conditions - in the provinces, among hunters, fishermen, off-road fans - the car is still in demand. But the trouble is that these "Volynian women" who have survived to this day are already extremely worn out - and this is in addition to the generous set of sores that the creators endowed them with from birth.

Therefore, active operators of "LuAZik" today are seriously modifying their all-wheel drive favorites. Naturally, most of these living machines remained in their homeland - in the Ukrainian hinterland, and based on the experience of local residents, it will be interesting to observe what new opportunities practically rare cars are getting today.

Engine

The weakest point of "LuAZiks" is the engine, and the weakest - in every sense. The 1.2-liter engine was sluggish both physically (40 hp) and in terms of durability. And if the first, thanks to the sensible transmission and low weight (960 kg), limited only the maximum speed, then the second, over time, simply does not make it possible to operate the car. Therefore, any other engine is already happiness for an inveterate fan of Volynians.

Engine

1.6 l, turbodiesel, from VW Golf II

But the question of transplanting a gasoline "heart" for LuAZ is, oh, how difficult it is. It seems that its hood is not the shortest, but it turns out that the engine hangs in front of the front axle and the entire transmission (it makes itself felt related to), and every centimeter of its length matters. After all, the native motor of the Volynyanka, MeMZ-966 \ 968, is a relatively short V-shaped one, moreover, it lacks a water-cooling radiator, and all modern “substitutes” are in-line “fours” that are liquid cooled. The best solution here is to borrow a "short" motor from a compact front-wheel drive foreign car. So, almost a classic solution for replacing the engine was a 1.6-liter turbodiesel from VW Golf II, the installation of which does not require body alteration. But it seems that more troublesome ones are more common - although in the end there are cheaper options: motors from rear- and front-wheel drive VAZs and Tavriyas.

The most important transplant problem is the lack of space for a liquid-cooled radiator. Usually it is borrowed from the same Tavria or a similar foreign car, and, together with the fan, is placed to the right of the engine. But there, due to poor airflow, he often does not cope with his task, and desperate craftsmen add another one to help him - already without a fan, but large and thin (for example, from VAZ "nines"), so that it fits in front of the engine ...

Many amateur designers do not hesitate to change the appearance of the car and lengthen the hood. The simplest option is to build up only the central part by adding a ledge, into which in this case even an impressive radiator from the Niva is placed. Owners and the entire bonnet are extended. About eight additional centimeters is enough to install a "Zhiguli" engine under the hood of LuAZ, and in front of it - a radiator along with a fan and a diffuser.

Any new "heart" is connected to the original gearbox using the traditional method - through an adapter plate. In the case of a "Tavricheskiy" engine, the matter is facilitated by the fact that in nature there is such a detail of factory production - from the LuAZ-1302 model.


Chassis

The main advantage of this model - its all-wheel drive system - is usually not seriously altered. There is an option to install a front cross-axle differential locking mechanism, for which tuners, without further ado, use "native" parts from a similar rear axle mechanism, which is locked "from birth" in LuAZik.


Only the lazy doesn't change its featureless 13-inch wheels for something bigger. And how else - after all, here without any alterations (up to the 15-inch version) discs from Japanese and Korean cars with a circle diameter of the mounting holes of 114.3 mm are suitable. True, if the selected wheels turn out to be very large and heavy, the car becomes completely sluggish in acceleration, since additional power is needed to spin up the four rollers. The most caring owners in such cases change the gears in the wheel reducers, increasing the gear ratio of the pairs. It is also worth introducing into these gearboxes for the reason that their standard spur gears are very noisy. If they manage to find a company with a surviving fleet of gear-cutting machines, gourmet "luazovody" order there helical gears.

Another modification, much more urgent, is the replacement of shock absorbers with more "tight" ones, most often "Muscovite" ones, with a slight alteration of the mount. The point is not only in their greater availability, but also in the fact that, due to the structural overload of the front end, at the slightest malfunction of the shock absorbers, the Volynyanka is prone to swinging the body on large irregularities. If the owner, moreover, has already managed to install a heavier and longer motor "dropsy", the question becomes urgent. The author saw "luazovodov" -experimenters who, in addition, change the angle of the shock absorbers, but there is no reliable data on the effect of such a measure.

It is relatively easy to modernize the steering system of LuAZ (here it is pertinent to note that the vehicle inspection in the homeland of the model was canceled several years ago, and certification of such an alteration in the country is optional.). A typical picture for the LuAZ-969 of all versions is the steering wheel "loose" due to wear of the hinges and the features of the steering gear. Therefore, many replace these nodes with more resistant parts of the steering linkage from Zhiguli and Muscovites, for which it is only necessary to make new fasteners and a longitudinal steering rod. In addition, more than one case of using a foreign-made power steering mechanism is known. The measure, by the way, is not particularly necessary, but, as a rule, we often modify our cars according to special tuning laws, which may not coincide with the laws of logic.

Body

The utilitarian body of LuAZ can also be attributed to its main advantages, but many users want more comfort. At least half of the cars have long been on the road (and off-road, by the way, too) with a homemade hard top. Handicraft structures of the Soviet era were riveted from steel, aluminum and plywood, but more modern options include the use of ready-made parts of the roof and sidewalls from the Izhevsk Moskvich-"pie", serial SUVs and minivans. The "native" body of the car is semi-bearing, with an integrated frame (like some, by the way), so it endures the most incredible exercises of novice designers. Alas, often these structures are far from even the basic postulates of design, but as far as I remember, the "bagpipes" have been criticized for their style since their very birth. It is interesting that in the last years of the conveyor life of the LuAZ-969M, one court tuning studio produced quite a pretty plastic top for it, and such roofs went from hand to hand even after the assembly of the model in Lutsk and Elektrostal near Moscow was stopped.

An important revision of the body is the alteration of the hood to an alligator-type design. The engine and auxiliary systems of the all-terrain vehicle require constant attention, and the regular way of opening the hood is not conducive to prolonged work in the engine compartment. The rear hitch assemblies are usually made external, borrowing the trunk loops from the Moskvich-402/403/407, or they are adapted - just imagine! - wipers wipers from large cars.

Little centenarian

In conclusion, I would like to draw the attention of readers to the fact that in the case of LuAZ, we have the opportunity to observe a real market paradox. One of the most primitive and short-lived domestic cars, created on the basis of a disposable one, suddenly turned out to be a real long-liver! Small-run, taken out of production about twenty years ago, it is still in service, and remains in demand so much that the owners agree to radically reshape the surviving samples, maintaining them in operational condition. Reason on the surface: almost unique flotation and absolutely exceptional price. The saddest thing here is that the automakers of this phenomenon stubbornly do not notice that the second of the mentioned qualities in their eyes is unconditionally outweighed by the first.
