Opel Astra G, 1998

If you want to buy a decent car from the C segment, then the Opel Astra G is really very good in this regard. I want to say that here the exterior and interior are at a decent level. Probably because of this, in the first place, I drew attention to the car. If compared with a car from the same segment, then I can say that the Opel Astra has a stiffer suspension, but in terms of handling I can say that it is very good. The high-quality execution of the interior, in my opinion, the Golf can be the only competitor, but about all the others I can say that they really fell short, the same applies to the Mazda 3, which is loved by many. Although the "Golf" is not very good in terms of appearance, but it's all very subjective. I am also satisfied with the sound in this car, only the Opel Astra G with a rather weak antenna, somehow interference appears from time to time, but, nevertheless, there are no complaints about the sound. “Shumka” is at the level, as for me, for segment C everything is very, very good here, I went in “Japanese” and “tricks”, so it’s noisier there.

Advantages : timeless design, comfort, noise isolation.

Flaws : No.

Opel Astra G, 2004

A car with a good suspension, there is such a directly necessary rigidity that you can safely drive over bumps, while I can drive on the worst road at 120. And if the road is good, then you can safely accelerate under 160 and at the same time all this is done without “stress”, the car shows confidence when driving, the interior is very quiet, only sometimes you can hear that the engine is running and the sound of tires is barely noticeable. At 180 km/h, it is felt that the car calmly picked up this speed, but at the same time, the growl of the engine is heard, and the fact that we do not have autobahns, this of course affects the fact that comfort decreases at such a speed. On the road, the Opel Astra G goes just fine, while it doesn’t matter to him at all what the weather is like outside. Here are 15 thousand runs, but I almost didn’t use up the oil. I've never had to top up yet. The automatic transmission is very good, with a sport button that makes gear shifting more energetic, but for the most part I don’t use this mode because the engine is already responsive, it’s enough for me to change lanes and overtake.

Advantages : suspension, quiet in the cabin, comfort.

Flaws : didn't notice.

Opel Astra G, 2007

I bought an Opel Astra with a 1.6-liter engine in the Elegance version, I took it from an authorized dealer in the spring. At the moment, the car has covered 10 thousand km, well, a little more. In general, I can say that I really like the car. Before taking the Opel Astra G, I also considered buying a Mazda 3 with a 1.6-liter engine. The car is very obedient, the behavior is predictable, both the brakes and the steering wheel respond exactly the way you want, it’s true that if the brakes are very sharp, then in the end it can drive the car to the side, but you can meet this on more expensive cars. At the moment, less than half of the run is on the highway. The “maximum speed” to which I overclocked the car is 190 km / h, although the passport indicates that the maximum is 185 km / h. At the same time, I still felt that the accelerator had a normal margin. On the road it goes very well, does not swim and does not scour, when the speed becomes more, then the steering starts to become heavier, and this only makes handling better. The motor is powerful, so you can accelerate even at high speed. But only in the city mode, not everything is so cool, because then it went, then it stopped - it’s not the case at all. The engine is such that its 1.6 liter volume is not enough to drive in such a manner and be on a par with some "monsters".

Advantages : comfort, equipment.

Flaws : weak engine 1.6 l.

Konstantin, Moscow

The impressive volume and competent organization of the internal space of the Opel Astra allow you to feel maximum comfort even on long trips. The cabin is spacious both on the 1st and 2nd row, which is the merit of the following dimensions:

  • length - 4.419 m;
  • height - 1.51 m;
  • width - 1.814 m;
  • clearance - 16 cm.

The luggage compartment of the hatchback holds at least 370 liters. luggage, and after folding the rear sofa, its volume increases to an impressive 1235 liters.

Ergonomic sports seats with adjustment, climate control with air recirculation function, built-in multimedia complex and various storage compartments are also responsible for the convenience of the driver and passengers of the car.

Engines

The technical characteristics of the Opel Astra car are excellent, regardless of the modification. Low fuel consumption per 100 kilometers and quick acceleration to 100 kilometers per hour are provided with any of the available engines, which include:

  • 140-horsepower unit with a volume of 1364 cm3;
  • engine, presented in 2 power options - 115 and 180 hp Engine displacement - 1598 cm3.

The motors are combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Equipment

A long list of modern equipment - already in the basic version! The five-door in the "base" has:

  • car radio with AUX-connector;
  • air conditioning system with filter;
  • front power windows;
  • heated rear window;
  • immobilizer;

Sale of Opel Astra Hatchback in the showroom "Central"

Buying a new car in Moscow will no longer be just a dream if you take advantage of interest-free installments, a used car recycling program, a profitable car loan, the Trade-in system, discounts or promotions in 2017. Buying an Opel Astra from an authorized dealer is not so difficult!

    The compact car Opel Astra Zh (G) has been produced since 1998. The design caused a mixed reaction from motorists, but many liked its practical qualities. The car is quite roomy inside and at the same time compact outside. To date, Astra G in good condition is quite appreciated in the secondary market. The car was produced in several body styles: sedan, 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback, station wagon, coupe and convertible.

    The car really turned out to be compact, but despite this, four large people feel great in the cabin, and you can also add to this the space of the 480-liter trunk of the station wagon, and it becomes clear why the car is of practical value.

    Among the line of power units of the second Astra, the best option is a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 16 valves, which develops a power of 101 (103) horsepower. The motor has good traction, starting from low revs, but at high revs it is unnecessarily noisy. The weak points of this internal combustion engine include "oil burner" and oil leakage through various gaskets.

    Modifications and characteristics of Opel Astra G engines

    The 1.4-liter unit is rather weak for the Astra, the 1.8 engine has an increased fuel appetite, and the 2.2-liter engine is not recommended for purchase due to the fast-stretching timing chain.

    Together with a 1.6-liter engine, a 5-speed manual transmission with rather long gears is installed on the Astra. And although in the city such long gears are useless, on the highway they help to unload the engine, increasing its resource and reducing noise.

    Astra manual transmissions also suffer from oil leaks. The manufacturer tried several times to eliminate this defect, but this did not lead to anything. In addition, the steering rack in the area of the steering rods begins to become covered with oil over time.

    The suspension of this car is quite reliable and hardy. And its repair is very inexpensive. It is often necessary to change the silent blocks of the levers and less often the suspension springs.

    But the most costly and unpleasant moment is the replacement of wheel bearings, which are only assembled with a hub on both the front and rear axles. You should not save on this spare part - branded hubs such as SKF and FAG go for a very long time, unlike their Chinese counterparts.

    You can find an overview on the Opel Astra H car

    Unlike the first generation, the body of the second Astra received better corrosion protection. But, since the age of these cars is already quite advanced, when buying, you should carefully examine the condition of the hood, trunk lid, rear wheel arches and door edges. Corrosion on the chassis does not affect the consumer and technical properties of the car in any way, so you don’t have to worry about it.

    Astra G headlights lose their transparency over the years due to clouding of the plastic as a result of exposure to the environment. It makes no sense to polish the headlights, it is much more efficient to replace them with an inexpensive option, for example, with headlights from the well-known Taiwanese company Depo.

    The upholstery of the Astra G is quite durable, the driver's seat has many adjustments, and the steering column is adjustable in two planes.

    The instrument panel of the second Astra is very simple. The steering wheel is small and fits comfortably in the hand. Interior plastic likes to creak, and there's nothing you can do about it.

    There have been cases of failure of the glass control unit located on the handle of the driver's door. Usually the cause of the breakdown lay in the corresponding electric motor. Sometimes the electronic mirror adjustment stops working.

    It is also worth mentioning the unreliability of the central display located under the windshield. He works according to his mood. Pay attention to its performance when choosing a used Astra G. It is also worth checking the operation of the “wipers”, their electric motor is also short-lived. In principle, there are no more complaints about the work of electricians for this car, which is quite good for a car of this age.

    A puddle in the front passenger's feet can result from an improperly installed cabin air filter.

    In general, the Astra G is a simple and reliable car that does not require large repair and maintenance costs. Many units can be serviced independently - with your own hands. A version with a 1.6-liter engine and a whole body that is not rotten is definitely recommended for purchase.

Opel Astra H (Opel Astra 3)- the third generation of a passenger car of a German company. Astra has always been a popular model, but this generation especially pleased dealers with sales volumes. Recently, the number of used Opel Astra H has increased dramatically, of course, this can be attributed to the regular renewal of cars, since most motorists do this every 4-5 years. But it may be that the owners begin to get rid of their cars after a run of 100-150 thousand km . And, here, what is the true reason, and what disadvantages are inherent in this car, now we will try to figure it out.

A bit of history:

The debut of the Opel Astra H took place in 2003 at the Frankfurt auto show, and in March 2004 the serial assembly of the car began. In the markets of different countries, it was also produced under the names Chevrolet Astra, Chevrolet Vectra, Holden Astra, Saturn Astra and Vauxhall Astra. The novelty was designed to replace the Opel Vectra B, which was popular at that time. In total, to storm the segment " C” or, as they say, a golf class, four bodies were produced based on the Delta platform developed by General Motors - a three and five-door hatchback, sedan, station wagon and coupe.

For most CIS markets, the car was assembled at the Russian Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, and since 2008 at the General Motors car assembly plant in Shushary near St. Petersburg. The design of the car was developed by the director of the German Opel design studio in Rüsselsheim - Friedhel Engler, who is also the creator of the Opel Corsa. The production of the model ceased in 2009, this model was replaced by the Opel Astra J, but even after the release of the new model, the popularity of the Opel Astra H did not decrease at all, therefore, it was decided to extend the production of this model (the car was produced until 2014 under the name Astra Family).

Weaknesses and shortcomings of the Opel Astra H with mileage

Unlike most competitors, the Opel Astra H has a fairly high-quality paintwork. The exception was cars made in Poland, on such specimens the paint swelled and fell off in pieces, fortunately, the manufacturer eliminated all the shortcomings under warranty. The body is completely galvanized, thanks to this it resists the onslaught of the red disease well, but, nevertheless, over time, from the effects of reagents that are generously sprinkled on our roads, you can find pockets of corrosion on the tailgate, door edges and thresholds. On cars of the first years of production, the headlights become cloudy, and the handles of the rear doors may also stick.

Engines

A large number of powertrains were available for the Opel Astra H: petrol - 1.4 (90 hp), 1.6 (105 hp), 1.8 (125 hp) and 2.0 (170, 200 hp) ; diesel - 1.3 (90 hp), 1.7 (100 hp), 1.9 (120 and 150 hp). All motors are quite reliable, but after 100,000 km of run they require little investment. The 1.4 engine proved to be the most trouble-free, but, due to insufficient power, this power unit is not in demand among motorists. In the more common 1.6 and 1.8 engines, in our operating conditions, the catalyst and the EGR valve become dirty very quickly. The problem is especially relevant for cars operated in the metropolis. One of the most serious breakdowns that many Astra owners have had to deal with is jammed intake and exhaust camshaft gears. This trouble occurs on a run of 60-80 thousand km, and after repair there is no guarantee that it will not happen again. Signs of a problem will be: increased noise when starting the engine (rattle, rumble) and deterioration in dynamics.

Also, the main disadvantages include a small resource of the rear engine mount (it becomes unusable every 60-70 thousand km). Often, owners are faced with a malfunction of the ignition system module, the cause of the disease lies in poor contact in the connectors and untimely replacement of spark plugs. Closer to 250,000 km, a rupture of the membrane responsible for the recirculation of crankcase gases occurs, located in the valve cover. You can identify the problem by the unstable operation of the engine, as well as by blue smoke from the exhaust system. Very often, the engine is sentenced to overhaul at the services, however, the problem is solved by replacing the valve cover. The most powerful power unit, in most cases, does not require repair up to 150,000 km, but minor troubles, such as fogging of the cylinder head and oil smudges through the crankshaft oil seal , can occur after 20,000 km of run.

All motors are equipped with a timing belt drive, according to the regulations, belt replacement is prescribed every 90,000 km, but there have been cases of a belt break after 50,000 km, therefore, it is better not to risk it and change the belt every 60,000 km. The pump is usually changed every second belt change. Diesel engines are reliable, but demanding on the quality of fuel and lubricants. Among the shortcomings of diesel engines, it should be noted weak fuel equipment and a small resource of the particulate filter (replacement every 50-60 thousand km). If the filter is clogged, the thrust disappears, and fumes come out of the exhaust system, like from an old KAMAZ. Also, due to design miscalculations, the engine control unit suffers (it is exposed to moisture and dirt). Of the most costly problems faced by owners of diesel cars is the failure of a dual-mass flywheel (resource 100-150 thousand km). Signals about the presence of a problem will be knocking and vibrations when shifting gears, it is worth noting that the gears turn on clearly.

Transmission

Opel Astra H customers were offered three types of gearboxes to choose from - mechanical, automatic and the Easytronic robot. Mechanics is considered the most problem-free, even a clutch kit serves 100-120 thousand km. The only thing for which you can blame the manual transmission is only for the lack of synchronizers, because of this, the reverse gear does not always turn on correctly. Among the shortcomings faced by owners of cars with mechanics, one can single out a leak in the rear crankshaft oil seal and a small resource of the output shaft bearing (60-80 thousand km). On some copies, after 70,000 km of run, cracks appear along the seam of the box. If, when switching from first to third gear, a blow is felt, it is better to contact the service, but, in most cases, it is enough to change the oil to eliminate the disease.

The automatic transmission is famous for jerking and jerking during gear changes, but you should not be afraid of this, since this is not a breakdown, but a feature of the transmission. The most common automatic transmission problem is the leakage of coolant into the hydraulic circuit of the box, after which the unit completely fails. If the auto-neutral fails, cleaning the jet in the box will most likely help. When switching to emergency mode, the box only works in fourth gear. The robotic transmission is very capricious and requires attention every 15,000 km (maintenance and clutch adjustment).

During operation, the driven disk is erased, while the point of contact with the basket shifts, but the controller responsible for supplying fuel does not know about the shift in the point of contact and supplies the wrong amount of fuel. As a result, this leads to incorrect operation of the box and premature wear of the clutch. It is worth noting that even with timely maintenance of a robotic transmission, its resource in rare cases exceeds 150,000 km. Before buying a car with a robot, be sure to ride it, if there are strong jerks when switching, it is better to refuse to buy such a car.

Reliability running Opel Astra H

Simplicity is the key to reliability, it was on this principle that the suspension of this model was developed, a semi-independent torsion beam was installed at the back, and MacPherson strut was installed at the front. If we talk about driving characteristics, then the suspension copes well with the realities of our roads, but it is characterized by increased noise. If you do not take into account the stabilizer struts and bushings (resource 20-40 thousand km), the support bearings and steering rods are considered the weakest point of the chassis, their resource, in most cases, does not exceed 60,000 km of run. Wheel bearings (the ABS sensor becomes unusable after 50,000 km) and ball bearings with medium loads nursed 50-70 thousand km. The rest of the suspension elements serve 100,000 km or more.

The weakest point in the steering mechanism is the steering rack, as a rule, it starts knocking after 100,000 km of run, fluid leakage may also occur, this, over time, can lead to the destruction of the assembly, but if the problem is noticed and eliminated in time, complications can to avoid. There are no complaints about the reliability of the brake system, the only thing the owners complain about is the small resource of the front pads (30,000 km.).

Salon

The interior of the Opel Astra H is made in a simple style, but at the same time, the manufacturer used sufficiently high-quality materials, but, despite this, almost every car has crickets in the cabin. The car cannot boast of the reliability of the interior electrical equipment. The main problem in electronics is the incorrect operation of the buttons on the steering wheel and steering column control levers, the reason is a faulty steering column SIM module. There are also complaints about the climate control system, or rather, the air recirculation damper. The problem is manifested by a characteristic crack from under the console.

Outcome:

In terms of reliability Opel AstraH not much different from its competitors, but due to the low cost of maintenance and repair, this car is one of the most interesting representatives of the golf class in the secondary market.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your review that will help readers of our site when choosing a car.

Sincerely, editorial Autoavenue
