Yesterday one of the regular customers came to us on the recently acquired Kalina of the second generation, replacing the timing belt, roller and pump plus all the fluids, but more on that in another article. Also, this engine was installed on the Grant, so this article will be relevant for her. On the speedometer 60000 and I believe that for this motor this is the optimal replacement interval, although all reference books say about 75000.

We will make a reservation right away that when the timing belt breaks on this car, the valve bends. It is recommended to check the condition of the belt every 15,000 kilometers.

For work, we need a set of keys and heads, as well as a 5 hexagon and a key for the tension roller. The whole procedure takes about an hour and a half.

The engine is similar to the eighth.

To begin with, we remove the protection, drain the antifreeze and, for convenience, remove the right front wheel. Next, loosen the locknut of the alternator belt tensioner. With a 10 head, unscrew the tensioner pin and remove the belt.

We unscrew the four bolts with a 5 hexagon and remove the upper protective cover of the timing belt.

Set top dead center (TDC). We turn the crankshaft by the pulley mounting bolt clockwise until the marks on the camshaft sprockets and the timing guard coincide.

Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt. We block the wheels with stops, tighten the handbrake, turn on the fifth gear and, with a slight movement of the key with a one and a half meter pipe extension, unscrew this bolt.

We remove the protective washer.

On the sprockets of the crankshaft, the marks must be aligned with the outflow of the oil pump.

Praise to the designers of AvtoVAZ, finally, rollers with a tension indicator appeared on the engines, now you don’t have to pull on the eye and check the tension by twisting the belt, less than thirty years have passed since the invention of such a design. We unscrew the tension roller bolt and dismantle the latter; we also remove the old timing belt. The photo shows that the belt has stretched out since the tension marks have diverged, when monitoring the condition of the timing belt, if you see this, you just need to tighten it.

To replace the pump, we need to remove the camshaft sprocket, and also unscrew a few bolts of the inner casing and remove it.

Three bolts down and a pump in replacement. The green arrow indicates the hole for the idler pulley bolt.

After changing the water pump, we proceed to install a new timing belt.

We put in place the casing and the camshaft sprocket. We check the coincidence of all labels, they were mentioned above. We put the tension roller, but do not tighten the bolt. We put on a new belt, observe the direction of rotation, first on the crankshaft sprocket, camshaft, tension roller and pump, the latter can be interchanged. We tighten the timing belt. With a special key, we turn the roller counterclockwise, as indicated on its body ...

... until the marks on it coincide and tighten the bolt.

We turn the crankshaft two turns and again check the coincidence of the marks and the belt tension.

We install all the parts in the reverse order of removal, fill in antifreeze and start. Easier nowhere.

Good luck on the roads. Not a nail, not a wand!

The design of the timing on the 8-valve engine of the Lada Grant car is no different from the good old 2108 engine. Therefore, this procedure can generally be shown on the example of Samara, and the difference will be only in the crankshaft pulley.

How often do you need to change the timing belt on the Grant?

The fact is that after the start of sales of Lada Grants, two different engines were installed on this car, although both of them were 8-valve:

  1. 21114 - 1.6 8-cl. On this motor, the valve does not bend, since the piston group is ordinary, the pistons have grooves for the valves. Power 81 hp
  2. 21116 - 1.6 8-cl. This is already a modernized version of the 114th engine, which has an already lightweight piston. Power 89 hp The valve is bent.

So, taking into account the fact that if the timing belt breaks on the 21116th engine, the valves will bend with almost 100% probability, it must be monitored regularly. A replacement must be made at least once every 60,000 km.

Photo report on replacing the timing belt on an 8-valve Grant

The first step is to set the timing marks, for which you can familiarize yourself with. After that, we need the following tool to work with.

  • Keys for 17 and 19
  • 10 m head
  • Ratchet or collar
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Special wrench for belt tension

First, we raise the car with a jack and remove the front left wheel, so it will be more convenient to perform this service. Using a thick screwdriver or an assistant, it is necessary to block the flywheel, and at this time unscrew the bolt securing the crankshaft pulley.

The photo above shows an example from 2109 of the old model - everything is a little different on the new Grant pulley, but I think the meaning is clear.

Now, using the 17 key, we loosen the tension roller, as shown clearly below in the photo.

And we remove the belt, since nothing holds it.

If necessary, the tension roller should also be replaced if it has already worn out (noise appeared, increased play during operation). Installing a new belt occurs in reverse order and is not particularly difficult. The main thing is to check the timing marks after installation so that they match, otherwise even at the first start there is a risk of damage to the valves.

So, you have found a defect or the deadline for a scheduled repair has come up. Replacement is carried out step by step only with a cold engine:

  1. Disconnect the battery of your Lada Grant.
  2. Remove the crankshaft position sensor. Place the sensor in a clean area, such as a shelf free of steel filings or oil.
  3. Place the piston of the first cylinder at top dead center.
  4. Turn the crankshaft until the mark on its pulley matches the protrusion on the drive cover.
  5. Remove the plug from the viewing window (located on the clutch housing) and check the position of the shaft. If you did everything correctly, then a mark will appear in the window and will be opposite the slot. Stop the flywheel with a screwdriver (it must be placed between its teeth).
  6. Unscrew the alternator drive pulley, remove it from the axle and remove the washer.
  7. Remove the timing cover.
  8. Loosen the tension roller (it should turn).
  9. Remove belt from all pulleys and pull out.
  10. If you need, in addition to installing the timing belt, remove the tension roller and replace it with a new one, then unscrew the fastening bolt, and then remove the roller right along with it.
  11. Before installing a new roller, check if a replacement is really needed. To do this, grab the metal middle of this mechanism and turn the plastic part. In a serviceable component, it moves smoothly, without jamming.
  12. Inspect the pump and start reassembling the timing mechanism. Install the roller in the upper hole on the cylinder block, but do not completely tighten the bolt that secures this part of the drive.
  13. Put on the belt so that it runs correctly over all the pulleys and rollers. In order for the belt to lie correctly, after laying it on the crankshaft pulley (it must first be installed in its place), tighten both parts of the part. Try to distribute the load evenly.
  14. The far part of the timing belt should lie on the pump pulley and go behind the tension roller (at this stage, check the diagram), and the near one should gently lie on the toothed part of the camshaft.
  15. Turn the camshaft pulley slightly (in the direction of less travel) so that the teeth of the belt line up with the notches on it. To turn the tension roller counterclockwise, use the special wrench.

After the replacement has been made, check the timing belt tension. Excessive voltage in it on the Lada Granta is fraught with failure of the cooling system pump. Also, with excessive tension, the belt can fail very quickly.

A loose belt can lead to timing failure. Turn the crankshaft to the right so that the alignment marks match. After that, reassemble the alternator pulley. Remember that when the belt is removed on a Lada car of the Grant model, it is strictly forbidden to turn the shafts. The adjustment is only made when the replacement has already been carried out.

The simplicity of the design lies in the fact that rotation is transmitted from one shaft to another with the help of this part. Each type of engine has its own design features, so the belts are produced differently.

Their differences are evaluated according to the following parameters:

Length;

Width;

Number of teeth.

The part is under heavy loads, so it must be strong, elastic, and provide good interaction with pulleys and rollers.

High Tenacity Polyester Belt Cord« GATES » enhances the belt's ability to handle heavy loads, maintains consistent belt tension, and provides excellent belt length stability. The upper part of the fabric layers provides elasticity and flexibility. Premium fibre-reinforced chloroprene rubber (strong fiber optic tension strands spirally laid for increased flexibility and stretch resistance) gives the belt oil, heat, and wear resistance and prevents deposit build-up.

Thanks to a successful design, they retain their length throughout the entire period of operation.

Main technical characteristics

The profile of the timing belt is trapezoidal, meets the requirements of US, UNECE and Russian GOST standards. The main dimensions of the belts are indicated on the packaging.

The toothed belt has an internal profile of projections (teeth), the number of which is 113, 17 mm wide.

During the production process, all belts undergo 100% quality control in terms of geometric dimensions and control tensile strength. All stages of production, as well as suppliers of component materials, are certified in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001. Identical technologies and materials are used in the production of timing belts that are supplied to the assembly lines of VAZ, GAZ, UAZ, General Motors, Ford, Daimler-Chrysler, Toyota, Honda and other car manufacturers.

The optimal combination of materials allows to achieve high wear resistance of belts, low noise level. In addition, belts« GATES » The US can operate over a wide range of tensions without a significant reduction in durability, which reduces the risk of belt failure due to incorrect belt tension adjustment.

Estimated service life of timing belts« GATES » USA - 125,000 km or 2 years.

Checking the tension and condition of the timing belts must be carried out at each scheduled maintenance of vehicles.

Before replacing the timing belt, you need to check and pay attention to the following:

If the belt is damaged, it must be replaced;

Check the degree of tension;

The belt must be dry and clean.

The design has a tension roller, the whistle may be due to its wear. Replacing the part completely solves the problem.

If the cause could not be determined, the belt should be replaced with a part from another manufacturer.

Timing belt breakage can be caused by the following factors:

Natural wear and tear (operation was carried out beyond the established period);

The part was originally defective;

Malfunction of pulleys, shafts, tensioners;

Excessive or insufficient belt tension.

The bearing is the most vulnerable part, often failing. After the belt is removed, it is easy to diagnose a bearing failure.

Off center roller. During rotation, the belt is tensioned, the degree of tension is fixed with a bolt.

It is important to monitor the condition of the timing belt tensioner roller. It is the roller that makes the belt tension level optimal.

It is necessary to check the condition of this part, if necessary, make repairs.

There are three tension options:

Insufficient;

excessive;

Normal.

How to replace the timing belt yourselfby car of the Lada Granta family.

With Internet Shop AvtoAzbuka repair costs will be minimal.

Just COMPARE and BE SURE!!!

A broken timing belt and its subsequent replacement is a fairly common problem among Grant car owners, both with an 8-valve engine and with a 16-valve engine.

Very often among motorists you can hear a conversation that due to a torn belt, the engine has jammed or the valves have bent. Why this happens and how to prevent such a phenomenon, as well as how to change the part yourself, will be discussed in our article.

Timing belt. What is it for

To transmit torque from the crankshaft to the gas distribution system, most modern cars use a drive belt. Car mechanics and drivers call this part the timing belt. This product is made of durable rubber, reinforced with a special fiberglass cord. For better traction, it has teeth that match in size with the notches on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys.

The belt performs a vital function in the operation of the engine, ensuring the smooth cycle of the intake and exhaust mechanism, and leading the exhaust gases to the outside.
In addition to the engine shafts, the timing belt on the Grant 8 valve also drives the coolant pump, which is called the "pump". Without a reliable drive, the operation of the power unit is impossible in principle, therefore, each driver must carefully monitor the integrity of the part and replace this element on time.

Timing belt replacement period on Grant

The car manufacturer Lada, the AvtoVAZ concern, provides for the timing of the replacement of the belt Grants - 75 thousand kilometers. The established term applies to all Grant vehicles, regardless of the number of valves.

In addition to the planned replacement, a prudent driver always monitors the condition of the drive, as it may break prematurely due to its poor quality or improper installation. Therefore, the decision “how much to change the timing belt on the Grant?” each driver accepts independently.

Why the belt can suddenly break

In some cases, even a new part can suddenly break, causing a lot of inconvenience to the owner of the vehicle. Most often, the teeth are worn out due to the fact that the Grant timing belt was installed incorrectly. In this case, he walks on the pulleys and rollers crookedly and his teeth "eat" the metal elements of the pulleys.

Other causes of premature wear can be:

  • Poor part quality. In this case, saving can play a trick on the driver, so you need to make a purchase in trusted stores
  • Pump malfunction. This is one of the most common causes of failure. The pump rollers break over time, forming a gap, and displace the axis. From this, its teeth are quickly erased and lead to a break.
  • Tension roller failure. The same thing can happen with the roller as with the booty. Bearing failure creates play and shifts the axis of tension.
  • Leakage of oil or antifreeze. Getting on the belt, technical fluids destroy the rubber from which it is made, and greatly affect the strength of the part.
  • Pulley tooth wear. If the gears of the camshaft or crankshaft are severely damaged, this will immediately affect the integrity. In this case, the teeth will have delaminations on their surface.

In addition to all of the above, the banal reason for its untimely replacement can lead to the fact that on the Lada Granta 8 the timing valve belt suddenly broke.

If the frequency of replacing the timing belt Lada Granta is violated, then the driver should count not only on buying a new one, but also, possibly, on a complete engine repair. The cause of the gap can be diagnosed as follows:

Consequences of a broken toothed belt. Is it all so scary

On Grant's cars, the manufacturer installs several types of power units.

There are 5 in total:

  • VAZ-11183-50
  • VAZ-11186
  • VAZ-21126
  • VAZ-21127
  • VAZ 21126-77

The first two are eight valves, and the rest are 16 valves. Sad consequences in the form of damaged valves due to a broken timing belt on the Grant threaten all these engines, with the exception of the VAZ-11183-50.

It happens in this way. When the timing belt breaks at high speeds on Grant's car, this leads to the fact that the connection between the engine shafts is lost. The camshaft stops abruptly, and the crankshaft continues its movement, as the engine is running.
As a result, the piston hits the fixed valves hard, which can bend and even break. Such damage threatens with an expensive repair of the entire gas distribution system, and if the piston was also damaged during the impact, then the replacement of the piston group, which is even more expensive.

How to determine that a break may soon occur

Urgent replacement of the timing belt for a Grant car 8 and 16 cells. may be needed if the following phenomena are observed:

  1. Decrease in vehicle power. A loose or worn drive train can make starting difficult and reduce power output.
  2. Strange noises of the timing belt on the Grant, coming from the engine compartment. A clacking, ticking or strange noise is often an indication that the Granta's timing belt is damaged and rubbing against the casing or other parts under the hood
  3. Visible damage. Parts may have scuffs, cracks and "shaggy" areas visible to the naked eye.

If, upon closer inspection, it turned out that the teeth on the Grant timing belt or at least one of the other listed problems were cut off, it is urgent to replace the part with a new one, which is quite possible to do on your own.

Replacing a belt on an 8-valve Lada Granta engine. Detailed description

After making sure that the part is in poor condition, it is necessary to prepare for the procedure for replacing the timing belt with a Lada Granta 8 valves. First of all, you need to provide a comfortable place to work, well lit, spacious enough and safe.

Of the tools you will need:

  • Wrenches in a set
  • Heads with extension
  • mount
  • Special tool for adjusting the roller

The tensioner roller is often changed at the same time, so you need to purchase it in advance. In all stores you can buy a timing belt pulley for Grant as a set.

Before starting work, it is necessary to unscrew the ground wire from the battery.

Consider the process of replacing the timing belt on a Lada Grant car using the example of an 8-valve engine. Main stages of work:

Preparation for repair. The car is raised on a jack and the front wheel is removed from the right side, as well as the protection that blocks access to the engine.

Removing the protective cover. On Grant's cars, the plastic cover consists of two parts. Taking it off is easy. First you need to unscrew the 4 bolts of the upper part, and then the bottom.

To do this, you need a 5 hex wrench. In addition to the cover, you also need to dismantle the crankshaft position sensor by simply disconnecting it from the connector and removing it from the socket.

Label combination. Before replacing the timing belt with Grant 16 and 8 valves, it is necessary to correctly set the engine timing. To do this, turn the crankshaft clockwise. This is done using a 17 head. You need to turn until the mark on the camshaft pulley matches the mark on the inner surface of the timing cover.

In addition, the marks must also be aligned on the engine flywheel. This can be controlled through a special hatch in the upper part of the clutch housing. After removing the rubber plug, you need to make sure that the special protrusion on the flywheel coincides with the camshaft mark.

Only after that you can continue to replace the timing belt on the Lada Granta.

Removing the alternator pulley. So that the shafts set on the marks do not turn, the flywheel can be locked through the inspection hatch. It is most convenient to do this with a thick screwdriver or pry bar. Having firmly fixed the flywheel, carefully unscrew the nut holding the alternator pulley and dismantle it together with the washer.

Next, loosen the alternator pulley nut

Tension roller adjustment. Using a 15 wrench, it is necessary to gradually loosen the tightening of the roller mounting bolt. When the fastening is loosened enough to sag, you can begin dismantling, making sure once again that all marks match.

Withdrawal. The part is carefully removed from all pulleys and removed from the engine compartment. If there was a complete break in the timing belt on Grant's car, it's even easier to do.

Useful advice: at the time when you change the timing belt on the Grant, the protective cover is removed, and you can check the condition of the water pump and tensioner pulley. The roller is removed and scrolled in the hands. If there is no extraneous noise, and the bearing does not jam, it is installed back. The water pump is checked by twisting it by the pulley. If nothing sticks, she's fine.

Installing a new part. Before operation, the timing belt on Grant 8 valves is checked for factory defects - delaminations, cracks, excessive roughness of the material. It would be useful to look at the expiration date, since rubber loses its properties even without being in use, but after lying on the shelf for several years. The number of teeth on the Lada Granta belt with an 8-valve engine is 113, and its width is 17 mm. The part is installed in the reverse order. First, it is pulled onto the crankshaft, then onto the generator and pump, circling the roller, and at the very end - onto the camshaft.

Tension. To ensure a good tension, it is necessary to scroll the roller counterclockwise. This is done using a special key, which is 2 metal rods. They are inserted into the corresponding holes on the roller and the roller is rotated until the notch on the roller cage lines up with the rectangular mark on the inner sleeve. Only then can the roller bolt be tightened.

Replacing the timing belt on a 16-valve engine. Process features

The process of replacing a timing belt on a 16-valve Grant is not much different from a similar process on an 8-valve one. But there are some differences, which consist in the fact that 2 camshafts have different marks and they are set a little differently.

In addition, replacing the timing belt Grants 16 valves automatic is complicated by the fact that in order to carry out these works it is necessary to remove the starter, which closes access to the flywheel.
The size of the timing belt Lada Granta with a 16-valve engine is 137 teeth with a width of 22 mm.
Dismantling the starter on the Lada Granta
Removing the starter is easy. To do this, just do the following:

  • Disconnect the plastic connectors from the starter
  • Unscrew the nut that holds the power terminal. To do this, use the key for 13
  • Using the same wrench, unscrew the 3 bolts that secure the starter to the bracket
  • Hold the starter housing and carefully remove it.

After removing this element, you can begin to replace the timing belt.
How to set marks on a Grant with a 16-valve engine
Since the 16-valve machine has 2 camshafts, the marks on each of them must match the recesses on the top of the timing cover, as well as with the engine flywheel. By turning the crankshaft to the right until these marks coincide, the camshafts must be fixed. For this purpose, a small piece of softwood or a rubber elastic piece is perfect.

After the marks match, the flywheel is fixed in the same way as on the 8-valve models.

support roller

In a motor with two camshafts, in addition to Grant's timing belt tensioner, there is also a support roller. It performs the function of additional stabilization of the belt, adjusting its correct position in relation to other parts and better functioning of the entire belt drive. Like the tension roller, it must be checked for defects and, if necessary, replaced with a new one.

How to tighten the timing belt on a Grant with 16 valves? The process is not particularly different from replacing the belt with an 8-valve Lada Grant. You need to start with the lower pulley (crankshaft). Then circle the pulley of the generator and pump, correctly positioning the part on the rollers, and then put it on the camshaft pulleys.

How to choose a quality spare part

Timing belt Lada Granta plays a primary role in the operation of the engine, so you need to choose it carefully. In the process of movement, this part can withstand huge loads, and it must be of the highest quality. To date, there are several proven manufacturers, products that deserve high marks. The most famous and good timing belts on Grant brands:
Contitech
Gates
Dayco
Bosch
Among domestic manufacturers, Balakovo Rezinotekhnika (BRT) can be distinguished, which provides a resource for the timing belt Grants and an affordable price.

For the convenience of selection for a 16-valve Grant, you can use the following table:

When purchasing products from a well-known company, each driver thinks about which timing belt is better for Grant. But besides this, the owner of the car must be careful not to fall for a fake. It is necessary to check the presence of holograms and other identification marks used by a particular company, as well as the coincidence of the original part number and the inscription on the box.

You should buy a spare part only in trusted outlets that are fully responsible for the quality of the products sold.
