Volkswagen cars, series B5, appeared on Russian roads in the second half of the 90s of the last century. Although more than 20 years have passed since the beginning of their production, these cars still drive, delighting their owners with reliability, unpretentiousness and German workmanship. From 1996 to 2005, two generations of sedans and station wagons of this model were produced. The first modification was carried out from 1996 to 2000. The next generation received model numbers B5.5 and B5 +. Cars were equipped with mechanical and automatic variable transmissions (manual transmission and automatic transmission).

Manual transmissions - features and maintenance

Volkswagen B5 is equipped with three types of 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions:

  1. 5-speed manual gearbox 012 / 01W, designed for use in vehicles with gasoline and diesel power units with a capacity of 100 horsepower.
  2. Manual transmission model 01A, intended for gasoline engines with a volume of 2 to 2.8 liters.
  3. Mechanics with 5 and 6 gears, model 01E, works in cars with turbocharged diesel engines, with a capacity of 130 horses or more.

Automatic transmissions are available in two models:

  1. The four-speed automatic transmission 01N is controlled by a program that can adapt to road conditions, driving style as well as the resistance of the vehicle.
  2. The 5-speed automatic 01V (5 HP 19) is distinguished by the possibility of manual gear shifting (tiptronic). Driven by a dynamic gearshift program.

Changing the oil in manual transmissions

The manufacturer indicates that the oil in the transmissions should not be changed. Perhaps this is true for Western European operating conditions, when the car is changed to a new one after 5 years of operation. In Russia, the situation is somewhat different, therefore it is recommended to change the oil after every 60 thousand kilometers.

Fill the box with gear oil corresponding to VW code G 052 911 A2. Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90 is commonly used. If this grease is not available, it can be replaced with Shell S4 G 75W-90, with the same characteristics. The manual transmission 012 / 01W requires 2.2 liters of transmission fluid. For boxes 01A and 01E, you will need a little more - up to 2.8 liters.

You can change the lubricating fluid yourself. The main condition for such work is the presence of a viewing hole, overpass or lift. There is one more nuance: the drain and filler plugs can be installed under the hexagon at 17. But there is a manual transmission, in which the plugs can be unscrewed only with asterisks at 16, with holes in the middle (see Fig.).

Craftsmen drill a central protrusion so that you can unscrew it with an ordinary sprocket (see fig.).

If the problem with the key is resolved and an oil replacement fluid has been purchased, an auxiliary tool should be prepared:

  • a container for draining used oil, with a volume of at least 3 liters;
  • metal brush and rags;
  • A funnel with a small diameter hose put on it, about 1 meter long, so that it can be inserted into the control hole of the gearbox.

Replacing the lubricant occurs in the following sequence:

  1. A car with a warmed-up engine and a manual gearbox is installed above the inspection pit or drives into an overpass. The machine must be on a level surface secured by the parking brake.
  2. The filler (control) hole plug, located in the front side of the manual transmission housing, is cleaned with a brush and wiped with a rag.
  3. After the filler hole is cleaned, it must be unscrewed.
  4. In the same way, the drain plug in the gearbox oil pan is cleaned.
  5. An empty container is installed under the drain hole, the plug is carefully unscrewed. Be careful as the dripping oil is very hot.
  6. After all the liquid has drained out, a new copper washer is put on the drain plug and the plug is screwed into its seat.
  7. The hood opens, a hose is pulled through the engine compartment to the gearbox filler hole and is wound inside the case.
  8. Fresh lubricating fluid is carefully poured through the funnel until traces of it emerge from the filler hole.
  9. The hole through which the grease was poured is twisted. Oil residues are wiped off the gearbox housing.
  10. You should make a short trip so that the oil composition is dispersed throughout the manual transmission mechanism.
  11. The machine is again installed above the inspection pit, after which you need to allow the oil to cool slightly and drain into the crankcase. Then check its level by unscrewing the filler (control) plug again. The oily liquid should be level with the lower edge of the hole. If the level is lower, add oil.

After changing the oil, many car owners note that the manual transmission starts to work better. Gears change much easier, there is no extraneous noise when driving. The oil level is checked with a dipstick. Its edge on the dipstick should be in the middle, between the MIN and MAX marks.

Automatic gearboxes - maintenance and replacement of transmission fluid

The car manufacturer, the VAG concern, states in the accompanying documentation for Volkswagen vehicles that the transmission fluid (ATF) cannot be changed. If this vehicle is operated on Russian roads, it is advisable to change the lubricant every 40 thousand kilometers. Then the machine will serve for a long time without causing any complaints. If this condition is not observed, the following malfunctions may occur:

  • while driving, when changing gears, jerks are observed;
  • the car reacts to switching with a delay;
  • The automatic transmission cannot shift to the required gear.

The reason for this behavior can be not only the poor condition of the working fluid, but also an insufficient amount of it or the ingress of dirt into the control plate. Therefore, each case of non-standard behavior of an automatic transmission must be considered individually.

What ATF to use when replacing

For partial or complete replacement of the lubricant in both types of automatic transmissions, ATFs are used that meet the requirements of VW G 052162A2. It is recommended to use semi-synthetic working fluid Esso Type LT 71141. It can be purchased at prices ranging from 690 to 720 rubles per 1 liter. If it is not on sale, you can use it to replace Mobil LT 71141, at a price of 550 to 620 rubles. per liter.

For a 01N gearbox with 4 gears, you need 3 liters of working fluid for a partial replacement and 5.5 liters for a complete replacement. In addition, about 1 liter of gear oil corresponding to VW G 052145S2 is poured into the main gear of the box. If the car is equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission 01V, a partial replacement will require 3.3 liters of lubricant. For a complete replacement, you will need 9 liters of ATF.

The procedure for replacing the working fluid

The list of work performed when replacing ATF is similar to automatic transmissions of models 01N and 01V. For example, the fluid change in box V01 is described. Before you start, you need to prepare the tool and purchase a couple of accessories. Looking for:

  • pallet gasket, catalog number - 01V321371;
  • cleaning filter, numbered 01V325429;
  • hexagons, sizes 8–17;
  • heads for star-shaped torxes, sizes from 25 to 30;
  • a wrench with a dynamometer;
  • fine-tipped tweezers;
  • gasoline for flushing;
  • empty container for draining the spent liquid;
  • small diameter hose for filling ATF;
  • rags.

Additional keys may be required if the crankcase guard needs to be removed. Further, the following sequence of actions is performed:

  1. The engine and automatic transmission are warmed up by a short trip, then the car drives into an inspection pit or an overpass, and is fixed with a parking brake.
  2. If there is a pallet protection, it is removed.
  3. An empty container is substituted, after which the fluid drain plug in the automatic transmission pan is unscrewed with a hexagon at "8". ATF is partially drained into a container.
  4. The bolts securing the pallet are unscrewed with a torx on "27", after which it is removed.
  5. The remnants of the working fluid are drained. There are magnets on the inner surface of the pallet, on which chips have adhered. By its quantity, the degree of wear of the box is estimated.
  6. The automatic transmission filter is removed from the control plate. First, you need to substitute the container, since oil may flow from under it.
  7. All connectors suitable for the control plate are disconnected. The fixation of the wiring harness and the rotation sensor are removed.
  8. After assembly, the automatic transmission selector gate must be in the same position as before starting work.

Working with the control plate

  1. With the help of torx, 17 bolts are unscrewed, which secure the control plate. The sequence for unscrewing the bolts is strictly regulated. You need to start with number 17 shown in the figure and end with number 1.
  2. The plate is carefully removed. The internal cavity of the automatic transmission is freed from the remnants of the old ATF.
  3. The design of the slab is carefully disassembled - the 5 components of which it consists are unscrewed. The mounting screws are of different lengths, so it is better to position them so that they do not get confused later.
  4. In the plate, there is a massive plate, under it are the nozzles and balls. It should be removed very carefully so that the elements underneath do not jump out of their nests.
  5. After cleaning the plate, it must be placed with its inner surface outward, next to the stove. Nozzles and balls from the plate are transferred with tweezers into the sockets on the plate.

Assembly and oil filling

  1. The assembly of the control plate is carried out in the reverse order.
  2. The control plate fits into place. All 17 bolts are tightened with a torque wrench, with the same force - 8 Nm. The bolts are now tightened in sequence from 1 to 17.
  3. The selector arm is set in place. Connectors with wires are connected, the harness is fixed. A new filter is being installed.
  4. A pallet with a new gasket is screwed to the bottom of the plate. If there is a new washer for the drain plug, it is advisable to install it as well.
  5. Unscrew the filler plug bolt. The tip of a hose connected to a plastic container is inserted into the hole.
  6. The working fluid is poured until it flows out of the filler hole.
  7. The engine starts, the brake pedal is depressed. The selector is briefly transferred to all positions. This procedure should be repeated several times.
  8. The engine turns off, ATF is added to the filler hole until it starts to flow out again. It is necessary to check that about 7 liters of fresh fluid have been poured into the automatic transmission.
  9. The engine starts up again, the transmission warms up to 40–45 ° C. Then the gearbox selector is switched to parking mode (P). In this mode, with the engine running, the remaining lubricant is added. As soon as droplets of liquid begin to fly out of the filler hole, it means that the required level of the working fluid has been reached.

Checking the transmission fluid level in the automatic transmission

Boxes N01 and V01 do not have dipsticks for measuring the oil level. In order to check its level in the automatic transmission V01, you should drive the car into the inspection pit. Check the oil temperature by connecting a scanner or VAGCOM. It should be around 30–35 ° C, not higher. Then turn on the engine and switch the selector to position P. With the engine running, unscrew the drain plug.
If the level of the working fluid is normal, liquid should flow out of the plug in thin streams. After that, you need to immediately tighten the drain plug without turning off the engine. If there is not enough lubricant, it will not pour out of the hole. In this case, you need to turn off the engine and top up ATF.

Loss of smoothness of control, difficulty in switching, extraneous noise. All this gradually appears in the operation of each automatic transmission, regardless of the car brand. Volkswagen Passat owners will be interested to know the answer to the question of how to fix these problems. There is a simple but effective solution - in the Volkswagen Passat.

When changing the oil in the Volkswagen Passat automatic transmission, it is important not to overflow the grease.

When to change

Many drivers mistakenly believe that it is not necessary. In fact, this is not the case. After 80 thousand kilometers, it is imperative to carry out this procedure. They do not want to change the lubricant mainly because this service costs a lot in any car service. But you can change the oil in the Volkswagen Passat B6 automatic transmission with your own hands, without the help of a specialist. Determine the time of the procedure, the following reasons:

  • the appearance of noise;
  • heavy gear shifting;
  • deterioration of the dynamic performance of the car.

All these situations indicate the occurrence of problems with the automatic transmission. In most cases, it is sufficient to replace the old product with a new one. Since in the grease that has already been used for a long time, metal chips appear from the friction of the transmission parts. These shavings significantly accelerate the wear of other components. You can determine the quality of the oil used with a dipstick and a simple white rag. To do this, run this rag over the dipstick. If small black particles remain on it, then it's time to change the lubricant.

What oil to use

Despite the fact that car manufacturers declare that there is no need to change the oil in the automatic transmission, this must be done. This is indicated not only by experienced drivers, but also by factories that produce transmissions. As a rule, the recommended amount of funds for a particular automatic transmission is indicated on the dipstick. But adhering to this recommendation is not at all necessary. The modern market is represented by several proven manufacturers. All of them produce quality products. Here is a list of the most common in the "VW Passat B5":

  • Liqui Moly;
  • Castrol;
  • Lukoil;
  • Mobil.

This is an incomplete list. But drivers use oils from these manufacturers most often. If you do not have a desire to purchase these particular products, then pay attention to the availability of certificates and GOST from little-known brands. If there are none, then it is best to refrain from buying such funds.

Checking the transmission oil level

To prepare for the shift, you need to measure the oil level in the Volkswagen Passat B5 automatic transmission. This can be done easily by following the step-by-step instructions:

  • install the car on a flat surface with a hole below;
  • remove the engine protection;
  • set the automatic transmission lever to the "P" position and raise the handbrake;
  • turn on the engine so that it runs idle;
  • remove the plug from the oil pan and check the level with the dipstick.

If it turns out that the lubricant level is below the minimum, then be sure to top up the required amount. As a rule, 6 liters are enough for full normal operation. You can slightly increase the amount of oil for the Volkswagen Passat B5 automatic transmission, but do not overdo it, as excess will also worsen the situation.

Tools and fixtures

For self-driving on the Volkswagen Passat, you will need to prepare the following set of tools in advance:

  • a set of keys and screwdrivers;
  • two containers for liquid with a volume of at least 7 liters;
  • hose with a diameter of 20 millimeters and a funnel.

Also, if there is no inspection pit, a jack will come in handy. Use it with the utmost respect for safety. Also, for a comfortable change of vehicle, it is recommended to either drive 5-10 kilometers, or leave the running engine to run for 10-15 minutes with no load.

Topping up oil

In order to add lubricant to the norm in the Volkswagen Passat B5 automatic transmission, we need all the tools listed above. If you find a shortage using the probe, then follow these steps:

  1. Remove the engine underbody guard.
  2. Remove the oil pan.
  3. Use the dipstick to determine how much oil needs to be added.
  4. Add a new agent to the automatic transmission with a hose and funnel.

As you can see, in a few steps you can easily add oil to the automatic transmission. The process will not cause difficulties even for an inexperienced driver.

Self-replacement procedure

The complete "Volkswagen Passat B5" does not stand out in anything special and is performed similarly to other car models. In general terms, the process can be described in several steps:

That's the whole process of changing the oil with your own hands in the Volkswagen Passat automatic transmission. The specific model does not play a special role. They differ in only a few details.

Outcomes

Summing up, we can safely say that changing the oil in an automatic transmission is a mandatory procedure. It is done quite simply with your own hands. Regular lubricant change will help keep the transmission parts in good working order, remove noise, and increase smoothness of control.

Changing the oil in the Passat B5 automatic transmission is not a complicated procedure that novice motorists can handle. These cars appeared on the roads back in the 90s on the roads of the Russian Federation. The Volkswagen brand itself was considered a "workhorse" both in Germany and in our country.

Did you know that the Volkswagen Passat was equipped not only with a manual transmission, but also with an automatic transmission. These were four-speed and five-speed automatic transmissions. Which one you have, write in the comments.

Transmission oil change interval

Before we talk about the interval, let's see what models of machines were installed on the Passat b5.

  • Is a four-speed automatic. The main difference with this box is that it can adapt to the driver's driving style;
  • 01V or - it was a five-step. This type of machine has a tiptronic function. It allows you to manually change gears on the box.

On both Passat B5 automatic transmissions, the manufacturer does not recommend changing the oil, citing the fact that it is not replaceable and can be driven for five years. But we know that this is a special marketing move so that the car owner, after two years, or even less, throws out the automatic transmission on the Passat B5 and buys a new one.

Attention! For Russian roads, as well as for severe climatic conditions, not changing the oil on the Passat b5 will not only lead to the gearbox failing, but also the engine will junk.

Therefore, I advise you to change the lubricant to the Passat B5 after 60 thousand kilometers completely, and after 30 thousand kilometers make a partial replacement. This will save your automatic transmission on the Passat B5 from overhaul, well, at least 250 thousand kilometers, at least. If you, of course, do not forget to do regular maintenance of the machine once a year.

Replacing transmission oils in various cars is a mandatory procedure to ensure full performance, especially those equipped with automatic transmissions. Some car manufacturers claim that in certain models, in particular in the Volkswagen Passat B5 automatic transmission, it is not necessary to change the oil in principle, since it has enough resources for the entire service life.

Nevertheless, depending on the conditions, the nature of the ride and other circumstances, you still have to change the oil, and due to the difficulties, only every 10 car owner knows how to do it on his own.

When to change the oil in the automatic transmission Passat B5

As objective reasons why you have to act contrary to the manufacturer's recommendations, there may be:

  1. When shifting gears, strange jerks often occur, or sometimes it can be difficult to switch.
  2. Also, when jerks occur spontaneously when the car is moving, or if the car does not immediately respond to gear shifting.
  3. Sometimes strange behavior is noticed, due to an insufficient amount of lubricant in the system, and because of this, it is necessary to refill, or make a hollow replacement, which is more relevant.
  4. In the event that the control plate becomes dirty, it should be immediately clarified that it will not be possible to get rid of one replacement of the lubricant. You will have to rinse the stove itself, and it is even more difficult to do it yourself.

If you forget about the manufacturer's recommendations, due to the fact that the conditions of Russian roads and other factors, in principle, change the entire operating system, the initial oil change in the Passat B5 automatic transmission should be carried out for rental 100 thousand kilometers, and further after every 50 thousand kilometers.

In the case of the symptoms described above, the oil in the automatic transmission changes even more often, and in addition, both changing the lubricant and flushing the box should be carried out with any type of automatic transmission repair.

What lubricant is relevant for the Passat B5 and what is needed for replacement

Before proceeding with the direct oil change, it is necessary to immediately prepare everything that may be needed during the process:

  • A basin or a tank for draining the working off.
  • Hex keys from # 8 to # 17.
  • Fine tweezers.
  • A set of torxes from No. 25 to No. 30.
  • You will need a thin, soft hose to fill the oil.
  • Torque wrench.
  • Some gasoline.
  • Rags.
  • Pallet gasket.
  • Automatic transmission filter.
  • And of course, the oil itself.

It should be said right away that all of the above is needed solely in order to replace the lubricant. In addition, other accessories may be required, for example, a set of keys for removing the protection of the pallet, etc.

Therefore, if you approach such a responsible event on your own, then only in a room with a full set of tools and a viewing hole.

With regard to the lubricant product itself, it is strongly recommended to use original oils corresponding to G 052162A2 on the automatic type of Passat boxes.

In the event that it is not possible to find the original, it is allowed to use other lubricants in the form of ESSO 71141 or MOBIL LT 71141.

The total volume of production is 9 liters + - and if even a little oil remains during the change, you can remove it and add it at the next change.

How to fill oil in automatic transmission

Of course, it will not work to make a complete replacement of the lubricant on your own in the absence of special equipment, nevertheless, even a partial update will have the best effect on the operation and performance in the Volkswagen Passat automatic transmission.

After all the preparatory work has been done, you can proceed to the replacement itself, and it consists of several very important stages.

First, a plug in the form of a bolt is removed on the oil filler hole and a small plastic bottle with a built-in hose is prepared. Further, this peculiar funnel is inserted into the hole and new oil is poured into it until it stops. As soon as the oil flows, the engine should be started and shift gears. The selector should be switched to all available modes and on each of them a short pause should be made from 2 to 4 seconds.

After that, the engine is turned off, the oil is topped up and everything is repeated, but this time in a more enhanced mode with the inclusion of all available modes that the box only has. At the end of these steps, the average grease consumption is 6-8 liters.

This is not the end of the oil change process. The next step is to add lubricant to the required mark and this is done according to some rules:

  • The engine must be running.
  • The selector is switched to parking mode.
  • Warm-up of the engine should be at least 35 and not more than 45 degrees.

If the temperature is higher than normal, then with a greater degree, the actual underfilling will occur, and with a lesser degree, overflow, respectively. It is necessary to fill in the lubricant until the product begins to overflow and as soon as the first drops of lubricant drip, the event is considered over.

Actually, this is how this dreary and responsible operation is carried out to replace the transmission oil in the automatic transmission on Volkswagen Passat B5 cars. Subject to strict adherence to the recommendations, full operation of the box is guaranteed without delays, jolts and other negative phenomena.
