Repair and maintenance of UAZ 3163 (Patriot)

UAZ Patriot is a comfortable modern SUV that has embodied all the best developments and technical solutions of UAZ specialists over the past 10 years. And no wonder, because the UAZ Patriot, the serial production of which began at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant on August 17, 2005, is the first fundamentally new model of an SUV developed at UAZ over the past 30 years. This car is aimed at people who lead an active lifestyle, and is perfect both for daily trips around the city for shopping or to work, and for recreation outside the city limits, in nature.

Of the fundamentally new solutions of the specialists of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, it is worth noting the design of the suspension, steering and transmission assemblies, the interior, which is characterized by increased convenience, and a very attractive, original exterior design. Imported components are widely used in the assembly of UAZ Patriot vehicles, their share in the car is more than 20 percent. Special mention should be made of the Iranian panel, the Korean gearbox like the one on the Rexton, and the headlights that Bosh designed specifically for the UAZ Patriot.

In order to implement the launch of the new product as successfully as possible, to achieve high levels of car assembly quality, a new welding line was launched at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, the main conveyor was modernized, and a new Eisenmann painting complex was built. Also noteworthy is the introduction of a new "Manufacturing System", similar to that used in Japanese car factories, and the passing of a special training course for the personnel to assemble the Patriot. All this testifies to the special attitude of the enterprise managers to this model, and it should be noted that it has borne fruit: the build quality has noticeably improved in comparison with the previous models of the plant. When you first enter the salon of a new UAZ model, you immediately pay attention to the thoroughness of the study of everything, down to the smallest details. The salon is spacious and comfortable, the interior is finished with practical soft plastic. Particularly pleased with the dimensions of the new five-door SUV, they, as well as a steering wheel with a tilt angle adjuster, will allow even a very tall driver to drive the car as conveniently as possible. In the harsh Russian winter, the stove saves from the cold, which in the new model can also work separately for the first and second rows.

Fortunately, the comfort did not compromise the dynamic performance, excellent endurance and flotation of the Patriot. One has only to turn on the four-wheel drive, and you will feel like a tamer of even the most impassable spaces. The main components of the car do not fail even in extreme conditions, and the high-spirited engine allows the UAZ Patriot to accelerate to a speed of 150 km / h.

Summing up, the advantages of the new UAZ SUV can be considered a spacious and comfortable interior with a modern design, excellent visibility, comfortable seats and, of course, cheapness compared to imported counterparts. The disadvantages include modest dynamics, itching and vibration of the levers, cotton brakes, limited traction, smeared reaction on the road.

The basic configuration of the UAZ Patriot includes central locking, power steering, an adjustable steering column, audio preparation, an additional brake light on the rear door, as well as stamped wheels with 225/75 R16 tires. In the Comfort version, an electric drive, electric heating, front electric windows and a few more additional options are also installed.

Since, upon a more detailed study of the work orders from Soffit, I suddenly realized that on the TO-0 I made, the oil was changed only in the rear axle. It was already six months ago, so it’s difficult to say what exactly happened: either I said something wrong, or we did not understand each other with the master-receiver.

Thus, you first need to purchase oil for the internal combustion engine and the front axle.

Since the last oil change, I still have about 3 liters of oil for the internal combustion engine, so one canister of Lukoil with a volume of 4 liters for the engine was bought:

Like last time, I buy oil at a Lukoil gas station, where, as I also mentioned earlier, the chance of stumbling upon a fake is minimal.


I made an appointment at the service station the next day.

In the course of a routine check, the master revealed some deterioration of the alternator drive belt. We have heard a lot about this feature of factory parts, so I agreed with the master's recommendation to replace the belt. A low coolant level was also noticed. This misunderstanding was also corrected.

All the work took about 4 hours, not counting the car wash, therefore, my recommendation: you should take care of your leisure time in advance during the maintenance work.

In total, according to the works and materials of the service station, cost of TO-1 amounted to 7343 rubles. If you take into account the oil I bought, then this is another two thousand rubles. That is, in the end: ~ 9400 rubles.


The cars of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant have won the respect of motorists throughout the country, thanks to their exceptional reliability.   • checking the cotter pin nuts of the ball pins, fastening the steering knuckle lever, ball pins, ball bearings to the half-axle casings, steering wheel bipod, tightening the nuts for fastening the tips;
  • setting free and working brake pedal strokes;
  • assessment of the attachment of the exhaust pipe of the muffler and its suspension;
  • checking the fastening of the wheels, the condition of the tires and the air pressure in them;
  • checking the fastening of the gearbox control drives, transfer case;
  • checking the attachment of the flanges of the front and rear propeller shafts to the flanges of the transfer case shafts;
  • cleaning the battery from dirt;
  • cleaning the ventilation holes of the battery in the plugs;
  • checking the electrolyte level and, if necessary, topping up with distilled water;
  • checking the fan belt tension and generator fastening;
  • compliance with all instructions of the lubrication table provided for TO-1.

During TO-2 it follows:

  • check the operation of the clutch and the free travel of the clutch pedal;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the clearances between the rocker arms and the valves;
  • check the fastening of the engine, engine oil sump, upper and lower parts of the clutch housing;
  • check the fastening of the radiator and its lining, blinds, spacer rods;
  • during the inspection, check the tightness of the cooling system, the serviceability and fastening of the cooling system pump and the fan, the condition of the fan belt;
  • clean the generator and starter from dirt and oil and check the condition of the collector and starter brushes;
  • blow out the cavity of the generator and starter with compressed air and check their fastening;
  • adjust the fan belt tension;
  • check the fastening of the inlet and outlet pipes;
  • clean the surface of the spark plugs, ignition coil of the distributor sensor and high voltage wires from dirt and oil;
  • check the condition of the high and low voltage wires;
  • remove the spark plugs and check their condition;
  • clean the electrodes and adjust the gap between them;
  • check the state of charge of the battery by the voltage of the cells under load;
  • remove the battery for recharging;
  • check the fastening of the battery in the socket;
  • check the fastening of the carburetor and the fuel pump, troubleshoot if found;
  • adjust the idling speed of the crankshaft;
  • check the fastening of the crankcase and bipod of the steering mechanism;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the engagement of the worm and the steering wheel roller;
  • check the amount of toe-in of the front wheels, adjust if necessary;
  • check the serviceability of the drive and the action of the parking brake;
  • if necessary, remove the drum, check the wear of the brake linings, disassemble, wash and lubricate the expanding and adjusting mechanisms;
  • inspect the condition of the frame, springs, spring cushions, cups, clamps and shock absorbers by inspection, repair if necessary. Rivet loose rivets of cups and clamps of springs;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel hub bearings;
  • remove the brake drums and clean the brakes. Check the condition of the brake drums, pads, linings and brake shield mountings;
  • check the condition of the brake lines and brake cylinders;
  • install brake drums and adjust the clearances between brake drums and pads;
  • check the fastening of the driving flanges of the hubs and flanges of the axle shafts;
  • check the fastening of the bearing caps of the drive gears of the front and rear axles;
  • check the attachment of the gearbox to the clutch housing and the transfer case to the gearbox;
  • check the clearances in the bearings of the driving gear of the main gear of the front and rear axles and, if any, eliminate the defects;
  • check the fastening of the propeller shaft flanges;
  • check the fastening of the body (cab) and platform to the frame;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the tension of the cables of the front door power windows;
  • check the fastening of the fuel tanks;
  • balance the wheels if necessary;
  • clean the hoses and rinse the parts of the closed crankcase ventilation system with kerosene;
  • clean the air filter and its filter element from dust and dirt;
  • rinse the flame arrester mesh inside the filter cover with kerosene;
  • replace each filter element with a new one;
  • follow all instructions in the lubrication table.

Seasonal service

Seasonal maintenance is carried out twice a year - in spring and autumn, and, if possible, is combined with the next TO-2. In the transition to the winter or summer season of operation, the scope of work on TO-2 is supplemented by the following operations.

1. Before the summer season of operation:

  • put the valve for heating the working mixture of the gas pipeline in the "Summer" position;
  • drain sludge from fuel tanks;
  • remove the heater and wiper motors, check the condition of the collector and brushes, rinse and lubricate the bearings;
  • flush the cooling system;
  • replace the oils in the units with summer grades provided for in the lubrication table.

2. Before the winter season of operation:

  • set the gas pipeline working mixture heating flap to the "Winter" position;
  • flush fuel tanks and fuel filters;
  • replace the oils in the units with winter grades provided for in the lubrication table;
  • prepare the starting engine heater for operation (when installed);
  • check the operation of the heating and ventilation system of the body (cab);
  • check the operation of the blinds, eliminate malfunctions and lubricate the traction;
  • flush or replace the brake booster air filter.

Remember that during the maintenance of the UAZ, all previous types of maintenance must be included in it!

Classic model

The off-road vehicle UAZ 3163 Patriot was put into production at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant in 2005. It became the successor to the UAZ 3160 and, which appeared in 1997 and 2000, respectively. Its main difference from previous models was the use of a large number of imported parts.

UAZ Patriot is equipped with European steering, braking, heating and air conditioning systems. In addition, the car has a Dymos gearbox (gearbox) and comfortable seats manufactured by the South Korean corporation DAWNSCO.

Some cars were equipped with an imported Iveco F1A diesel engine, but later it was replaced by a domestic ZMZ 51432 engine, which meets higher environmental standards. All other parts, including the chassis, transfer case and axles, remained domestic.

Thanks to the modernization, UAZ repairs on their own began to be required much less often. Despite this, the need for regular maintenance of the Patriot remains, since it is very difficult to find a reliable UAZ car service.

Diagnostic work

Do-it-yourself regular maintenance of a UAZ SUV consists in checking and inspecting the mechanisms of the car, replacing defective parts at regular intervals. Diagnostics is necessary, since each unit and unit has its own service life. Timely maintenance of the UAZ 3163 allows you to identify malfunctions before they lead to sad consequences.

  9. Measuring the level of antifreeze in the system, electrolyte in the battery, oil in the reservoir of the hydraulic booster, brake fluid in the reservoirs of the clutch and brake hydraulic drives.
  10. Measuring the tension of the fan and alternator belts.
  11. Listening for unusual engine and transmission knocks and noises.
  12. Testing the operation of the generator, lighting and measuring devices.
  13. Checking the brake pedal travel, the condition of the brake pads and discs, the effectiveness of the service and hand brakes.

Such maintenance is required every 20,000 km.

  1. Inspection of the motor cushions.
  2. Diagnostics of the cooling system, the condition of the radiator plug, the clearances in the bearings of the main gears of both axles.
  3. Checking the condition of the contacts of all electrical systems.
  4. Diagnostics of brake drums.

The lubrication control in the axles is carried out every 14,000 km, and the lubricant level in the gearbox and transfer case is checked after 200,000 km.

Required regulatory

Maintenance of the UAZ 3163 Patriot vehicle consists in the timely replacement of consumables and scheduled preventive maintenance. This helps to extend the life of the vehicle without breakdowns.

Routine works that are carried out every 10,000 km.

  1. Tightening the front and rear suspension to the frame, propeller shaft flanges to the transfer case and axles, intermediate support to the cross member, ball to the axle shafts, leading flanges to the hubs, steering knuckle arms and steering gear parts.
  2. Tightening the attachments of the power unit, as well as its crankcase and clamps of all rubber hoses.
  3. Balancing and rearranging wheels.
  4. Draining water from gas tanks.
  5. Cleaning and lubricating battery terminals, unclogging ventilation holes in plugs.
  6. Cleaning spark plugs, adjusting the gap.
  7. Replacing the engine oil.
  8. Cleaning the bridge safety valves.

The following operations are carried out every 20,000 km.

  1. Tightening of transmission, engine and body elements to the frame. For the first time, these actions need to be carried out after running the car.
  2. Replacing the fuel filter.
  3. Cleaning the inspection hole in the pump.
  4. Replacing spark plugs
  5. Change of transmission oil.
  6. Adjusting the direction of headlights and foglights.

Changing the oil in the car

After passing every 30 00 km, such works are carried out.

  1. Cleaning and flushing the crankcase ventilation system, replacing the filter element of the air filter.
  2. Flushing of gas tanks and a strainer of an electric fuel pump (EBN).
  3. Cleaning the engine lubrication system.
  4. Changing the oil in the axles and hub bearings, tightening the bolts of the rear brake shields and front pivots.

Replacement of EBS, injectors, idle speed regulator, pressure regulator, neutralizer, ignition coil, adsorber and all powertrain control sensors is carried out every 80,000 km. Cleaning the generator and starter from dirt, checking the condition of the brushes and the collector, replacing the brushes (recommended) are carried out after every 40,000 km.

Tightening of the crankshaft and alternator pulleys is carried out only after running in. Every 2 years, the brake fluid and oil in the hydraulic booster are replaced. Antifreeze is changed every 3 years.

Maintenance of UAZ designed to maintain the car in working order, reduce the intensity of wear of parts, prevent the occurrence of malfunctions and identify them for timely elimination. Compliance with the frequency and high-quality performance of maintenance in the prescribed amount ensure the constant technical readiness of the vehicle and reduce the need for repairs. If a malfunction of the mechanisms, extraneous noise, knocks or vibrations, as well as violations of adjustments and other malfunctions, is detected, the driver is obliged to immediately take measures to eliminate them, regardless of the period of the next maintenance. The scope of maintenance includes control and diagnostic, fastening, lubrication, adjusting, electrical and other work performed without disassembling the units and removing individual units from the vehicle.

  4. Check the amount of free and working strokes of the brake pedal; if necessary, adjust the brake and its drive.
  5. Check the fastening of the front exhaust pipe and its suspension.
  6. Check the fastening of the wheels, the condition of the tires and the air pressure in them, if necessary, pump air.
  7. Check the fastening of the gearbox control drives, the transfer case and, if necessary, tighten the screw connections.
  8. Check the fastening of the flanges of the front and rear propeller shafts to the flanges of the transfer case shafts and, if necessary, tighten the fasteners.
  9. Clean the battery from dirt; clean the ventilation holes in the plugs; check the electrolyte level and top up with distilled water if necessary.
  10. Check fan belt tension and alternator attachment.
  11. Follow all the instructions in the lubrication table provided for TO-1.
  1. Perform the work stipulated by TO-1.
  2. Check clutch function and clutch pedal free play. Adjust the clutch control drive if necessary.
  3. Check and, if necessary, adjust the clearances between the rocker arms and the valves.
  4. Check the fastening of the engine, engine oil sump, upper and lower clutch housing.
  5. Check the fastening of the radiator and its lining, blinds, spacer rods.

  30. Clean the hoses through each TO-2 and rinse the parts of the closed crankcase ventilation system with kerosene.
  31. Clean the air filter and its filter element from dust and dirt. Wash the flame arrestor mesh inside the filter cover with kerosene. Replace the filter element with a new one after each TO-2.
  32. Follow all instructions in the lubrication table.
