A car in the back of a Berlinetta (a kind of coupe) is both sporty and rather unusual. By tradition, the car is distinguished by large “nostrils”, and twin, rectangular headlights are located along their edges, along with marker lights operating on an LED basis. The spectacular bumper is emphasized by carbon fiber air ducts. The hood is accentuated by the signature wave, which is hidden in the air intake and has a carbon fiber coating similar to that of the bumper air ducts. On the other hand, the wave is directed to the windshield pillars, and then to the rear-view mirrors.


The profile of the car is emphasized by aerodynamic lines, air intakes and air ducts. And if the panoramic roof does not surprise anyone now, then this can be done with transparent body parts and doors. Car doors, made of high-strength plastic, have rotary mechanisms, due to which they open up. This complements the already modern, futuristic style, and the coupe seems even more sporty. The rear fenders increase the width of the car, and the wheel arches add massiveness to the sports unit with their appearance.


The stern harmoniously fits into the style of the car and meets all its requirements. Particularly stand out are the lanterns, which are 2-angular lines, and their edges go under the surface of the wings.


The BMW i8 spoiler is also quite original, which originates on the roof, then goes down the trunk lid and ends near the badge of the manufacturer's company. Vertically, the line of the spoiler and lanterns is located on the same level.


The discs have a special aerodynamic design and are 21 inches in diameter. At the rear, the bodywork is almost entirely made of carbon fiber. The rear bumper is made of carbon fiber and is surrounded by an attractive blue frame. Inserts of this type are used throughout the body. The combination of silver, black and blue colors are currently the only option for painting cars.

The BMW i8 has an interior that is as stylish as the exterior design. It has a fairly large area and is finished mainly with polished carbon fiber, and everything else - with excellent strength plexiglass and transparent plastic. The instrument panel is represented by an electronic board, which, when the ignition is turned off, becomes tinted. Several air deflectors are placed around it, their baffles are covered in chrome, although they are completely black inside. Because of what, from their different positions, a different visual impression is formed.


The cabin accommodates a maximum of 4 people, as there are 2 separate seats and an armrest between them at the back. Armchairs are very comfortable, thanks to the anatomical profile. The seat backs of the BMW i8 are quite thin, which leaves more room for the rear passengers. Each seat is equipped with a pretensioner belt. To sit in the back seat, you do not need to disturb the front passenger, because the width of the door is enough for this with a margin, unless you have large body dimensions.

This model is a hybrid, and under the hood of the car there is a gasoline power unit, the volume of which is 1.5 liters, which, in combination with an electric motor, is capable of delivering 400 hp. With all this, the BMW i8 is definitely the most complex production car that has ever rolled off the assembly line of this concern. And although it is hardly possible to predict a large-scale sales shaft (due to the price), the i8 is quite suitable as a model for subsequent models. In September 2009, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW presented a sports car concept called BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics. The following year, 2010, it was announced that the production of the serial model, which was called the BMW i8, would begin in 2013 at the company's plant in Leipzig.

During all this time, there were a lot of skeptical remarks that this idea would not be successful and the company would lose a lot of money invested in the development and production of the future model. The reason for such statements was the failures that befell the competitors of the Bavarian automaker in this field and the still rather “raw” technologies for creating hybrids. But the result exceeded all expectations, silencing the most ardent skeptics. An indicator of the excellent work of the engineers and the success of the project as a whole is the fact that in a few months of 2014 the company received an annual number of orders at a rather considerable cost of the car - 126 thousand euros.

Why did this car appeal to European buyers? The BMW i8 is an all-wheel drive 2+2 seater G2 class coupe with a carbon fiber body and an aluminum frame. Although the production model is devoid of some of the high-tech bells and whistles that were present in the concept version, nevertheless, the car has rightfully retained the title of innovative and high-tech vehicle. Smooth lines and curves of the body give it a swift and graceful look of a 200% sports car, expressed in entirely practical terms, perhaps the lowest coefficient of air resistance - 0.26.

Thanks to the traditional use of composite materials and light metals in modern cars of this class, it was possible to reduce the weight of the car to 1490 kg, while maintaining the rigidity of the structure.

The heart of the BMW i8 sports car is a plug-in hybrid installation, which allows charging lithium-ion batteries not only from the main engine, but also from a conventional electrical network. All the best that the company has developed is embodied in a practical and ergonomic modern interior design that complements the original appearance of the car. However, one of the most impressive features that make this sports car stand out is its efficiency, which some European publications called extreme. So, in mixed mode, the i8 spends only 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers with a CO2 emission level of 59 g / km. Of course, for the money you can buy almost any car with a traditional engine from BMW or any other brand, but in this case, the i8 is capable and has already become the object of desire of many wealthy Europeans. The BMW i8 is a sports car with a hybrid gasoline-electric power plant, and is the second model of the “I” sub-brand from the Munich automobile concern BMW (the first model is an electric and hybrid electric-gasoline compact five-door hatchback BMW i3). Both models were first presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013.

The BMW i8 is a premium all-wheel drive coupe. The car has a modern, futuristic design, a comfortable and functional premium interior, as well as modern technical stuffing. The car is also distinguished by excellent driving characteristics. The car is intended for people with a high income and concerned about environmental degradation.

For the first time as a show car, the BMW i8 was introduced back in 2009. The mass production entered the car, almost unchanged, compared with its conceptual version.

At the end of November 2017, within the framework of the motor show held in Los Angeles, the German automobile manufacturer presented a modernized restyled coupe, which acquired an increased capacity battery and an electric motor with a large number of “horses”. The car began to look a little different, and the interior of the car received an updated list of equipment.

The overall dimensions of the sports car are as follows:

Engine

The BMW i8 is simultaneously equipped with two types of power plants: an internal combustion engine and an electric motor:

  1. The gasoline engine has a working volume of 1.5 liters, 3 cylinders and power up to 231 hp. The internal combustion engine transmits traction to the rear axle of the car, and functions in conjunction with a six-speed automatic transmission;
  2. The electric motor that transmits traction to the front axle of the car is a completely new development of BMW engineers, created specifically for the BMW i8. The power of the power unit that consumes electricity is 143 hp. The electric motor works in conjunction with a two-speed automatic transmission.

The electric motor is powered by a series of lithium-ion batteries, which are located in the central tunnel and have their own liquid cooling system.

The capacity of the traction battery is 11.6 kWh, however, only 9.4 kWh is nominally used. The car is capable of driving 55 km in electric car mode. The maximum speed of the electric sports car is 120 km/h. As for the dynamics of acceleration, up to a speed of 60 km per hour, the car accelerates in 4.5 seconds. Recharging to 80% from a household power outlet will take 2.4 hours, and using a proprietary charger can reduce this time to 2 hours.

The BMW i8 also received an additional motor-generator with a power of 11 kW - it provides prompt pick-up during “turbos” arising from high boost pressure, and also feeds the car's batteries.

The BMW i8 is a full-fledged hybrid sports car with all-wheel drive and a combined output of 374 hp from both engines. In the "sport" mode, the car accelerates to "hundreds" in 4.4 seconds, and the maximum speed of a car equipped with an electronic limiter is 250 km / h. Gasoline consumption is equal to 4.5-5.5 liters. For internal combustion engines, AI-95 gasoline is used.

As part of the presentation of the updated model, representatives of the Munich automaker announced that the BMW i8, and the BMW i8 Roadster, will be equipped with a more powerful hybrid power plant. An increase in the efficiency of the engines will be achieved by installing a more efficient electric motor on the model, which is responsible for the traction transmitted to the front axle. At the same time, the gasoline turbocharged power unit on the car will remain the same. In restyled cars, the battery capacity is also increased, which, on a full charge, allows the coupe to cover a distance of 55 km, and for the Roadster version of the car, this figure is 58 km.

Both versions of the car have a speed limit of 250 km/h.

Interior

It is quite difficult to get inside a sports car: this is due to the low landing of the car and its “sport specificity”. However, once inside the compartment, a person forgets about the initial discomfort: sporty, low-slung, comfortable soft seats with lateral support and heating are also equipped with ventilation and massage functions. The seats have a large number of various electric adjustments, which allows you to adjust the position of the chair to your own individual characteristics. Genuine leather, soft, pleasant to the touch plastic, natural wood, and metal are used as the main material for decorating the interior space of a German sports car.

As for the overall design concept of the interior space, it looks truly futuristic, but a number of details and interior elements allow you to trace the BMW corporate identity. The car is equipped with a large three-spoke steering wheel that fits nicely in the hand and has excellent upholstery. On the spokes are the controls for additional salon functions. Right behind the wheel, you can see a digital dashboard, with an unusual and stylish arrangement of elements. The center console is slightly turned towards the driver, equipped with a huge touch screen that allows you to control the multimedia system and use navigation. The design features of the BMW i8 include the ability to fold the screen into a dashboard panel. The system can be configured in such a way that images from external cameras are transmitted to the driver's smartphone.

Peculiarities

As for other design features of the sports car, its design is based on the DriveLife modular chassis, which has a low center of gravity and a weight distribution of 49:51. The chassis of the car consists of a ridge, batteries, aluminum subframes are hidden in it, a carbon fiber body is attached to the base with threaded connections. The car received a fully independent suspension, with adaptive, electronically controlled shock absorbers: Dynamic Damper Control: front - two-lever, rear - five-link. Suspension elements are made of aluminum: this has a positive effect on the overall weight of the car. The brakes located on the four wheels of the coupe are disc, the front ones are perforated, and the rear ones are ventilated. Appearance

The car looks really sporty and futuristic. This is facilitated by a streamlined body shape, a stylish low landing, short overhangs and a long wheelbase. Interestingly, the car has practically not lost the gloss and chic of its conceptual version: all the same stampings and bends. Narrow "squinted" laser lights of the head optics, and LED taillights, which received an unusual shape, and elegantly located on the extensions of the wings of the car. Excellent aerodynamic properties of the model are achieved due to the connected air channels that envelop the car from the sides and from below.

The only thing that is still left in the concept version of the car is the transparent doors. In the standard version of the BMW i8, they open upwards, thanks to the aerodynamic rear-view mirrors and their optimal position, they do not interfere with getting in and out of people. The only inconvenience is associated with high thresholds. The windshield and rear glass have a large angle of inclination, the roof is low: the front part is slightly lower than the stern, wide wheel arches, smooth lines and an unusual two-tone color make the car draw attention and emphasize its sporty, modern, innovative character.

Despite the fact that the car received an innovative design, some details indicate that the car belongs to the products of the Munich automobile concern. These elements include a large false radiator grille, made in the corporate style of BMW, it has a blue backlight, which makes the car even more futuristic, large sports body kits: large wheel arches with 20-inch rims on low-profile rubber.
