So. if the track requires frequent exits for overtaking and operational changes, it is better to set the Normal or Sport mode. In them, the layer of "silicone" under the "gas" pedal becomes smaller, the response of the car improves. How much? In absolute terms - for a considerable two seconds during acceleration from 80 to 120 kilometers per hour. ...

If the track is free and sharp accelerations are not required, it is quite possible to get by with the eco-mode. It worsens acceleration, but allows you to maintain high speed. Moreover, with relative silence: the operation of the motor in the cabin is almost not audible. But, unfortunately, there are many other noises. For example, the oncoming air flow is clearly audible already at 90-100 km / h. And on rough roads, "crickets" can be heard under the trim panels.

It's time to talk about the main thing that made up the highlight of the test of the new "Octavia". The car turned out to be phenomenally economical! Without using the cruise control function, it consumed about 5.6 - 5.7 liters per 100 km on the highway. I did not "brake" (test speeds reached 140 km/h) and did not linger in the ECO position, periodically going through all the possible modes. However, the result exceeded all expectations.

But even more he surpassed them when I activated the "cruise". I set the limit at 110 km / h and ... and after a while I was convinced that the average consumption fluctuates between 5.2 and 5.4 liters per 100 km! At the same time, I often had to pick up speed for overtaking. So, in the "cruise" mode, I covered under three hundred kilometers, after which, on a 100-kilometer section of the M9 highway, I turned it off ... and as a result, I arrived in Moscow with an average consumption of 5.4 liters. Since then, I've had trips around the city, as well as on slower and busier country roads, but the average consumption has only increased to 6.0 liters per 100 km.

So for now, the 1.4-litre turbo Skoda Octavia tops the fuel economy rating of the gasoline cars I've tested. Her closest rivals I know are the Kia Picanto with a 1.2-liter 87-horsepower engine and automatic, as well as the "mechanical" Nissan Tiida, which had a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine with a capacity of 117 hp. With. These models during my tests showed, respectively, 5.5- and 5.6-liter average consumption. Again, not for a short time, but for significant runs. On Tiida, for example, I covered 1100 kilometers in the Tver, Pskov and Novgorod regions only on the first test day.

The new Octavia has such serious options as active cruise control (with automatic deceleration to a complete stop), full LED headlights, lane and blind spot monitoring systems, an “assistant” when leaving the parking lot in reverse, the Columbus multimedia system with navigation and a 9.2-inch touchscreen, a contactless smartphone charging pad and a heated steering wheel.

Naturally, the diesel analogues of the Octavia are not taken into account. However... I accidentally came across a short report from one of the Russian travelers who rented a diesel version of a Czech model in Western Europe. Its fuel consumption result is 5.5 liters per 100 km, however, with "mechanics", along mountain serpentines and speeds up to 200 km / h on autobahns.

Hybrid cars, of course, also do not make sense to compare with pure gasoline, but, again, tests show that in order to achieve maximum fuel economy and use electric drive for the most part, you have to drive a hybrid very slowly and sadly. Yes, and the consumption will be a little less, you can meet five liters per hundred, but not without tricks.

...and an umbrella to boot

What else do I remember about Skoda Octavia? Yes, in fact, nothing. In terms of handling, it is a solid middle peasant, it rides exactly on its own money. Probably, in this regard, 1.8-liter versions with multi-link suspension should be ahead (for 1.6- and 1.4-liter rears, semi-independent, with a torsion beam). Nothing outstanding, nothing extraordinary. A calm family-cottage liftback, very reminiscent of a sedan in profile, which is highly appreciated by our consumers. Of course, they will be pleased with the new design of the front of the cabin, there is no longer a budget "emptiness" and savings. And the abundance of functions-options is also an obvious plus. It doesn't matter that the driver settings of the car are not too striking, far, in particular, from Audi Drive Select. But they are, and they can be flaunted in front of less sophisticated competitors.

And Octavia has a lot of competitors in our market, and everyone takes something of their own. The sports and gambling component plays on the side of the Ford Focus. The steering drive of the updated Peugeot 408 with hydraulics outweighs the Octavia's electromechanical device. Close to it in terms of capacity, but a little more cost-effective sedan Nissan Almera.

She has an opponent in the same "camp", this is Volkswagen Jetta. What makes it stand out? In fact, most of the pluses, oddly enough, are on the Octavia's side: with the same volume of turbo engines, its engine is more powerful and "momentary"; the fuel tank of the Czech model is 5 liters larger, and the trunk is almost 50 liters larger. Octavia wins both in acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h (it is faster by 1.5 seconds), and in terms of fuel consumption (0.5 liters more economical). In fact, the Jetta is ahead only in the sense that it has an independent multi-link rear suspension in all trim levels and the ground clearance is declared at 160 mm, for the front-wheel drive Octavia it is 5 mm lower.

And, of course, the "average" design does not play into the hands of the Jetta. Still, it is boring in terms of design of both the body and the interior. The exterior design of the updated Skoda Octavia is more interesting, but it also does not cause delight, I have heard skeptical statements about it more than once. Like, they made the body “weighty” to give status, but they didn’t bother with the design. Four headlights instead of two? Two looked prettier, but in terms of lighting, four did not add anything. Here, cornering lights with fog lights (which automatically light up even when turned off) are a plus.

Well, design by design, equipment by equipment, but what about reliability? After all, it is not by chance that half of the Octavia buyers opt for cars with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine and a hydromechanical automatic machine, and the 1.4-liter turbo version with a "robot" attracts only a fifth of customers. According to statistics, the number of calls to the service related to malfunctions of the new "robot" has decreased by a hundred (!!) times. But I happened to hear an opinion about the fragility of the Octavia suspension, especially the anti-roll bars. Allegedly, someone, tired of changing them every 20 thousand kilometers, ordered a familiar turner to fit these parts from a completely different car model, and the problem disappeared. Special case?

However, let's be honest: a dim design is a matter of taste, and the suspension of almost any car can be "killed" for 20 thousand kilometers and even faster, you just need to try. But what you can’t take away from the updated Octavia is the capacity of the passenger compartment and trunk, as well as the level of equipment that is growing literally from year to year. Which, one way or another, emphasizes the status of the model. In the test car, for example, a small cylindrical container with ... an umbrella was found in front under the passenger seat! Such additional equipment was recently available to the flagship model of Skoda - Superb. I wonder what luxury options will be offered to buyers of the next generation Octavia? Maybe chairs with ventilation and massage function? Or "suckers" - door closers? Laughter with laughter, and the demands of an audience that chooses cars of this class and price range are growing by leaps and bounds.

Sales market: Russia.

In 2016, Skoda introduced an updated version of the third generation Octavia family (5E). The updated liftback received a different design of the front end: new twin headlights, a new grille, bumpers and some other details. Bi-xenon optics in the top version were replaced by optional LED headlights. At the back, the pattern of the lanterns has changed. In addition, Octavia can now be ordered with 16- and 18-inch wheels with a new design. Following the premiere of the updated basic version of Octavia at the end of 2016, the manufacturer showed sports modifications with the RS index. Sales of the updated Skoda Octavia family with a line of gasoline engines 1.6 (110 hp), 1.4 (turbo, 150 hp) and 1.8 (turbo, 180 hp) began in Russia in April 2017, and a little later, sales of the “charged” Octavia RS with a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 230 hp started.

On the Russian market, Octavia is offered in three trim levels: Active, Ambition and Style. In the list of equipment of the basic version: LED running lights and rear lights, driver's seat height adjustment, on-board computer, heated windshield washer nozzles, heated exterior electric mirrors, front electric windows, Radio Swing audio system with a 6.5" screen (MP 3, USB, Aux, SD).In the Ambition package, both front seats are height adjustable and equipped with heating, there is an adjustable lumbar support, air conditioning, Bluetooth. The Style package will offer a multifunction steering wheel, atmospheric lighting, climate control, folding mirrors, an 8" central display, voice control and much more . The interior of the Skoda Octavia deserves the closest attention, especially in expensive versions with additional functional packages, which include power seats, a Columbus multimedia system with a 9.2-inch screen, and more. USB connectors and an optional 230-volt outlet appeared at the back. Other innovations are contour lighting in the door card inserts and an umbrella in the compartment next to the front passenger seat.

The line of gasoline engines Skoda Octavia opens atmospheric 1.6 MPI (110 hp). This engine is aggregated with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed "automatic". For turbo engines - 1.4 TSI (150 hp), 1.8 TSI (180 hp) and 2.0 TSI for Octavia RS (230 hp) - a 6-speed "mechanics" or a DSG robotic preselective gearbox ( 7-speed or 6-speed for 2.0 TSI and for all-wheel drive liftback 1.8 TSI 4 × 4). The most dynamic version of the RS accelerates to “hundreds” in just 6.7 seconds (6.8 seconds with the DSG box). The 1.4 TSI and 1.8 TSI engines also pull well and quickly accelerate the Czech liftback - it takes from 7.3 to 8.2 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h. For the base motor on the “mechanics”, the same figure is 10.6 seconds. (12 sec. with "automatic"). The average consumption of gasoline for 1.6 MPI is 6.1 (6.3) l / 100 km. For turbo engines, consumption varies from 5.3 to 6.6 l / 100 km. The tank volume is 50 liters, and for the all-wheel drive Octavia 1.8 4 × 4 it is 5 liters more.

The front suspension of the Skoda Octavia is MacPherson strut. Rear - simplified design: semi-dependent, torsion beam. However, the most powerful Octavia 1.8 TSI and RS have a feature - a multi-link rear suspension, which contributes to better comfort and handling. Compared to the standard liftback, the RS version has a reduced ground clearance of 127 mm (in the standard 153-156 mm) and a rear track extended by 30 mm. Also available in it are a drive mode selector, variable effort steering and Performance Sound Generator - a sound simulation system for a sports engine. The 4×4 drive for Octavia with 1.8 TSI and DSG6 engine is based on a multi-plate clutch. Under normal conditions, the main power is transferred to the front wheels, if necessary, traction on the rear axle increases in a split second.

The high safety of the third generation is one of the important trump cards of Octavia. The car earned five out of five stars in EuroNCAP tests. The updated version is standardly equipped with frontal airbags (for the passenger - with deactivation), child seat mounts, anti-lock brakes, hill climb assistant (for automatic transmission and DSG), and also, with the exception of the base motor on the "mechanics", an electronic stability control system ESC including differential lock XDS. In more expensive trim levels, there is a brake pad wear indicator, light and rain sensors, side airbags in front, and in the Style package, air curtains.

A wide variety of modifications is still one of the advantages of Octavia. The salon is distinguished by well-thought-out ergonomics, a sufficient supply of space in the back, the front seat back is folded (optional), and in terms of luggage compartment volume (568-1558 liters), Octavia in the liftback body is one of the leaders in the class. The Octavia RS stands apart, it is the fastest in the line, but, according to Drome experts, it lacks a number of advantages for which practical buyers fell in love with the Czech liftback so much: the RS has a low ground clearance and a body kit that is “traumatic” in Russian realities. Therefore, it makes sense to give preference to a car with a 180-horsepower engine, besides, in this modification, you can purchase a 4x4 all-wheel drive option (in the Ambition configuration and above) - before restyling, this option was provided only for the station wagon Octavia COMBI.

Read completely

Of course, the new Skoda Octavia of 2013 turned out to be a little like the first; but the qualities that made its predecessor so popular - availability, reliability, durability - are fully absorbed. The car is fully consistent with the declared image of the "family". An imperturbable Czech pan and a practical Czech lady in front, a couple of their restless offspring in the back seat - in relation to the Octavia, such a picture looks natural and organic.

For a decade and a half, two generations of Octavia have changed. The cars of the first modification, which underwent a significant facelift at the turn of the millennium, were produced with a new appearance until 2004, when they were replaced by cars with a more modern exterior. In 2008, the model underwent modernization, the restyled Octavia successfully showed itself to the world at the Paris Motor Show. And finally, in 2012, the presentation of a new generation car of the Skoda-Octavia family.

Today, the third generation Octavia is represented only by a liftback, but this year a station wagon will appear. It is also planned for 2013 to acquire a new engine with a power of more than 200 l / s with this "Skodovka". And in 2014, the all-wheel drive SUV "Oktavia scout" should appear.

Specifications

Like its predecessor, Octavia-3 is based on the Volkswagen MQB modular platform. Rear suspension in two versions - independent multi-link or semi-independent with a torsion beam; front - independent with racks from MacPherson. Disc brakes are burdened with ESP, ABC with EBD, and the not so widely known HCC system, thanks to which any “kettle” will start uphill without problems without slipping and rolling.

The launch model is powered by three petrol engines and two turbocharged diesels. Gasoline TSIs with a working volume of 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 liters guarantee 86 and 105, 122 and 140, 180 “horses” of power, respectively. Manufacturers promise moderate fuel consumption - from 4.9 to 5.7 liters per 100 km. TSI diesels with a volume of 1.6 liters (90, 105 and 110 l / s) and 2.0 liters (150 l / s) also do not show much appetite - from 3.8 to 4.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

Gearboxes as standard are mechanical 5- and 6-speed. For a surcharge - 6- and 7-speed robotic DSG, with two clutches. These boxes are already known, earlier they could not be called ideal - there were claims to reliability. The designers claim that the DSG has been upgraded and the problem has been removed. Well, if so - because, until it breaks, this box works amazingly: the clarity of switching is combined with smoothness, the manual mode in real operation practically remains unclaimed. There are no losses in dynamics, the acceleration time to 100 km / h on the "automatic" is reduced - it's ridiculous to say - by 0.1 seconds.

The wheelbase, compared with the previous generation, has grown by almost 11 cm and amounted to 2686 mm. The length of 4659 mm (+ 90 mm to Octavia 2) and the width of 1814 mm (+ 45 mm) have also increased; only “growth” remained unchanged - 1461 mm. It is worth noting that the curb weight was reduced by 100 kg.

Interior and cabin comfort

"Octavia" has always been distinguished by the fact that in its class it offered perhaps the most spacious interior. In the 2013 Skoda Octavia, the designers managed to surpass themselves - it has become even more spacious! If necessary, four passengers in the back seat in the Octavia would feel more comfortable than three in most classmates. The stock of space in all directions, almost like in an executive sedan. The volume of the trunk also causes delight - it was huge in the “two” as well, and now, although a little - by 5 liters - it has also increased. Total - 590. Who does not know - this is a record in this class. For comparison: the huge BMW 7 Series has a much smaller trunk.

But the designers of "Skoda" are well aware that today you cannot take the size of the consumer alone. Therefore, everything else in the cabin of the new Octavia is at its best - both the build quality and the abundance of all kinds of "bells and whistles" - trifles and not trifles that make the trip more pleasant. The finish is aesthetic, the sound insulation is good, the ergonomics are thought out and worthy of only praise. For rich trim levels, things are provided that were previously available only in much more expensive cars. For example, an 8-inch touch screen monitor, a DVD player, a Phone Box for mobile phones that allows phones to work from an external antenna.

The category of shortcomings includes the “commonness” of the interior design, the absence of any creativity in it, “exclamation marks”. However, whether this is a disadvantage or not is debatable; depending on whose taste. Octavia is not a small-scale car for a bohemian party. Octavia - from the moment it was launched to the present day - is 40% of the sales of the entire Czech automobile industry. Caution and some conservatism in this regard is justified. All kinds of experiments and creative searches in design involve a lot of risk. Therefore - the usual handles, the usual steering wheel, the usual "torpedo", the usual - all separately ... And in total - a cozy, comfortable and pleasant interior.

Conclusions in a separate line ...

If the car has already received the glory of being safe, it has to bear this burden, no matter how hard it is. In Octavia, the Czechs did not even try to save on safety. Nine airbags, automatic braking after a collision, a lane control system with the ability to read traffic signs, a driver fatigue control system, and so on, so on, so on ... For cars of more solid classes, the preventive protection system, which will tighten the seat belts at the right time, will slam hatches, raise windows and “turn on” the brakes - this is no longer news; but in the Octavia class, no one can boast of such a thing yet.

Options and prices Skoda Octavia 2013

It seems that Octavia is slowly moving into the segment of expensive cars. Perhaps the niche of the "people's" car on the "Skoda" is destined for the appeared "Rapid". But the prices for the Skoda Octavia 2013 are predicted, on average, by 20-25% higher than the prices for the previous generation Octavia. The cost in Russia is from a million to a million "with a penny." But be that as it may, the car is worth the money. Whether the Octavia has become exactly 20-25% better is unlikely to be taken by anyone, it is difficult to calculate. But the fact that she has become more pleasant is beyond doubt.

Information on the topic - disadvantages and

The third generation Skoda Octavia debuted at the end of 2012. It is built on the modular MQB platform - the one that underlies the VW Golf VII and many other models of the German concern VW Group.

Compared with the second generation, the third Octavia has grown significantly. For example, the wheelbase has increased by 10.8 cm. The dimensions call into question positioning as a compact car. This model was somewhere between classes C and D. Despite the increase in dimensions, the weight decreased by almost 100 kg.

Octavia, as before, was offered in two body types: liftback and station wagon. The trunk of both versions is simply huge: 590-1580 and 610-1740 liters, respectively.

Fortunately, the manufacturer did not save on amplifiers in critical places. Skoda Octavia A7 earned 5 stars in crash tests. The predecessor was only able to get four stars.

At the beginning of 2017, a restyled version with dual headlights was introduced.

Modern equipment

The basic modifications of the Octavia A7 were equipped with a manual transmission, air conditioning, electric and heated exterior mirrors, front electric windows, 2 airbags, ABS and central locking.

For an additional fee, it was possible to significantly expand the level of equipment. For example, purchase a two-piece panoramic sunroof, active cruise control, emergency braking system, lane assistant, keyless entry and much more. The predecessor could not offer so much modern equipment.

Czech cars are valued for many useful solutions in the cabin (Simply Clever): a cooled temperature-controlled glove box, a vest under the driver's seat, openings in the front doors that can hold 1.5-liter bottles, an umbrella in the station wagon or the famous green glass scraper under the cover filling hatch.

The dimensions of the cabin cause a real delight among people in the first and second rows. Passengers with long legs on the back sofa will not have to complain about discomfort during long trips.

Engines

One of the popular gasoline engines is 1.4 TSI. The third Octavia uses its revised version EA211. Instead of a timing chain, a toothed belt is installed here. The engine has not yet created big problems, and oil consumption is within reasonable limits. Nothing is heard about the accumulation of soot.

However, many owners have to deal with turbo failures. The problem is the turbine actuator, which is sticking. Until September 2014, it was integrated into the turbocharger, so the entire assembly had to be replaced. After it became possible to change the actuator separately from the turbine.

Some owners point to the fact that the upgraded 1.4 TSI is much louder than the old EA111. Perhaps it's all about the simplified soundproofing.

The reliability of 1.2 TSI is also rated well. True, its power is clearly not enough for such a large car. The most powerful 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI are the same EA888 with a timing chain drive. Fortunately, there are no problems with the timing drive yet, and the issue of oil consumption is not as acute as before.

The new atmospheric 1.6 liter (now with a chain-type timing drive) sometimes closer to 100,000 km disappoints with the rather noisy operation of the gas pump or phase shifter.

The thermostat is a common ailment of cars with gasoline engines. Its malfunction can lead to underheating, and sometimes to overheating of the engine. He can refuse after 10-20 thousand km. After 50-100 thousand km, the pump can also fail.

The 1.6 TDI CR replaced the 1.9 TDI. It was not offered in Russia. In the basic version, the young engine has the same power and torque as the old engine. But the 1.6 TDI consumes less fuel - about 5.5 l/100 km. Even when fully loaded, it burns around 6.5 l/100 km. A typical problem with a small diesel engine is the premature failure of the water pump. Another common ailment is charge air sensor failure.

No less good is the 2.0 TDI CR (150 or 184 hp). Its main vulnerability is the timing belt tensioner, which does not withstand the 200,000 km allotted to it. It has to be changed closer to 150,000 km.

Transmission

The most expensive faults are associated with gearboxes. For example, there is premature wear of bearings in manual transmissions. In this case, a characteristic noise appears.

The notorious DSG has not relieved owners of anxiety. Although it is worth recognizing - the percentage of malfunctions has decreased. The worst opinions are collected by the DSG7 (DQ200) with a dry clutch. After 150-200 thousand km, repairs are practically unavoidable. However, there are also positive examples with trouble-free mileage of more than 350,000 km. Most often you have to change the clutch and release bearing, less often mechatronics. It is noteworthy that until 2014 the warranty for the robot was 5 years, and after that it was reduced to 2 years.

DSG6 (DQ250) with oil bath clutch turned out to be much more enduring. It is used only in combination with a 2-liter turbodiesel. The wet clutch DSG7 is only for the RS version with a 245 hp petrol engine.

The hydromechanical machine went to a 1.6-liter aspirated. He hasn't raised any objections yet.

Chassis

The universal platform allowed not only to increase the wheelbase, but also to use various types of suspensions. Depending on the engine version, a torsion beam or a lever system is installed in the rear of the Octavia. The multi-link scheme is used in the most powerful versions of 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI (RS), as well as in the presence of an all-wheel drive system.

The suspension has a decent lifespan, but often hits hard, especially in the rear on the beam versions. It is possible to get rid of noise by replacing standard shock absorbers with analogues. Knocking in the front, as a rule, occurs due to the banal wear of the struts and stabilizer bushings.

Typical problems and malfunctions

The first customers encountered electrical failures. In most cases, it was possible to get rid of ailments by updating the software. There were also problems with power windows. After replacing the switch, the problem did not return.

The touch screen of the Balero head unit is often buggy - it stops responding to touch, especially in wet weather. Dealers are changing the screen, and in the meantime, the owners have found a simple solution - the use of a protective film.

In a car with xenon, the headlight washer sometimes fails. Due to damage to the spring, the nozzle remains in the open position. The service completely changes the atomizer.

Another childhood disease is the spontaneous lowering of the back of the driver's seat with a mechanical adjustment of the position.

Special versions

Skoda Octavia RS

Octavia RS III was presented in 2013 at the Goodweed Festival of Speed. Like its predecessor, it was equipped with two engines: petrol 2.0 TSI / 220 hp. and diesel 2.0 TDI / 184 hp The RS has bigger brakes, lowered suspension and sports seats.

In 2015, a more powerful variation of the RS 230 was introduced with a 10 hp boost. 2.0 TSI and electronically controlled differential. It is capable of accelerating up to 250 km / h. In 2017, another limited edition RS 245 with 245 hp was presented.

Skoda Octavia Scout

The Scout version appeared in 2014 and was based on the Octavia Combi 4x4. It has increased ground clearance (by 31 mm), special lining on the body and 17-inch wheels. The transmission uses a 5th generation Haldex clutch. All Scouts, like all-wheel drive modifications, have a multi-link rear suspension.

Conclusion

The strengths of the Skoda Octavia are a huge interior and trunk, good equipment and the latest German Volkswagen technologies. Today, gasoline engines practically do not cause concern, but the DSG robot still haunts the owners.

Hello. My name is Igor. And I have a Skoda Octavia. Many consider this a diagnosis, but I am happy in this marriage. And I used the invitation to the Russian test drive of the updated Octavia for personal interests: is it worth changing my current car to a new one? And if so, which version?

I bought an Octavia used, for a four-year liftback with a 1.8 TSI engine (152 hp), a manual transmission, mediocre equipment and a mileage of 40 thousand kilometers, I paid 600 thousand rubles. Since then, almost three years and 22 thousand kilometers have passed: yes, I travel a little and not further than the Moscow region. But almost every kilometer on this car is a joy! Comfortable fit, good visibility, peppy engine, excellent gearbox. And how cool she rulitsya! The family is also delighted: they love the Octavia for its spacious interior and dimensionless trunk.

Of course, there are also disadvantages. The first is a rigid suspension. Even with relatively high-profile 15-inch wheels, the car does not like broken roads: shaking comes to discomfort. And the second drawback is the maslozhor. A frank miscalculation with the design of pistons and oil scraper rings has led to the fact that some 1.8 CDA series engines consume more than a liter of oil per thousand kilometers! Later, the design was finalized, and consumption fell, but even the manufacturer still allows consumption up to 0.5 l / 1000 km.

Although my engine is at risk, and the consumption still does not exceed the standard, however, a canister of oil in the trunk and a weekly check of the oil dipstick have become mandatory. And in the event of an increase in the appetite of the motor, I am already mentally prepared that I will have to pay about 140 thousand rubles for the repair and replacement of the piston group. Or sell the car.

But the consumption of gasoline pleases: in summer - an average of about 8 l / 100 km (it turns out six on the highway), in winter it rises to nine, and over ten it goes off scale, only if you drive through traffic jams, with which I am psychologically incompatible and therefore try to avoid them.

There are other miscalculations: for example, stretching the timing chain, chips on the body, and DSG “robots” on used cars are a lottery with a small chance of winning. We talked about this in detail in the section. For someone, all of the above will be enough to forget the turbo Octavia as a nightmare. Understand. But I knew what I was getting into when I bought this car. After all, such a convenient, versatile and at the same time dynamic car still needs to be looked for. And for pleasure, as you know, you have to pay. In the end, the buzz from every trip to the Octavia is more important to me than a dull and vegetable existence with a car, which, on the other hand, can be profitably sold on the secondary market.

But sooner or later the car will have to change. And the number one candidate is the new Octavia. But I’m not happy with the restyling: even when I saw the cars live, I couldn’t get used to the four-eyed face. The disharmony of lines and edges, exacerbated by the breaking of the running lights of the optional LED headlights, cannot be called a success of the designers. In an effort to make Octavia different from Rapid, they went somewhere wrong.

After the release of the four-eyed Octavia, the question of how the updated version differs from the pre-reform one, in addition to the design itself, slipped through the comments. The answer is: almost nothing. The length is increased by one centimeter, but the angles of entry and exit remain the same, and under the lip of the front bumper I measured the same 210 mm - the four-eyed Octavia will be able to drive along speed bumps in the same way as its predecessor.

There are no major changes in the cabin. Excellent ergonomics, solid finishing materials, dense and comfortable seats. And the only notable change that will please even those who buy the basic version: the diagonal of the touch screen of the initial Swing media system has been increased from 5 to 6.5 inches. A similar increase has occurred in older Bolero and Amundsen devices, and at the top of the range is now the new Columbus system with a 9.2-inch capacitive screen.

The remaining innovations relate to options: for example, USB connectors appeared in the back row and interior contour lighting. But you know what? In terms of comfort and cabin size, my previous generation Octavia does not look flawed against the background of the new car! For example, with a height of 186 cm and a considerable build, I fit comfortably in the new Octavia only if the steering wheel is raised all the way up, while in my car there is still a small margin of adjustment. The distance between the backs of the two rows at hip level is almost the same: provided that the driver's seat is set up for me, I measured 740 mm in the old liftback, and 750 mm in the new one.

A large trunk is the traditional trump card of Octavia. Restyling, of course, did not affect him, but over the car of the previous generation, the advantage here is more visible than in the cabin. According to my measurements, the length of the compartment is 1120 mm versus 1060 mm. However, this is the case when even the previous trunk is enough for the eyes, and the additional 60 mm will only make you stretch even further into the far corners of the compartment.

In a word, while the new Octavia has not captivated me. Maybe everything will change after the driving part of the presentation?

In technical terms, the update brought Skoda a minimum of changes. For example, the rear track has been expanded: by 20 mm for cars with a semi-independent suspension and by 30 mm for cars with a multi-link, and this was done for the sake of a visual effect (the car looks more advantageous with the wheels spaced wider). Because of this, new hubs and bearings appeared, but otherwise the Octavia is the same.

There are no changes in terms of power units for the Russian market: as before, we are supposed to have cars with aspirated 1.6 MPI (110 hp) and turbo engines 1.4 TSI (150 hp) and 1.8 TSI (180 hp). Alas, the basic naturally aspirated cars were not brought to the presentation in Gelendzhik. But I found out about it in advance and signed up to the dealer for a test drive.

Devices with white rims in expensive versions are a dubious decision: in bright sunshine, the numbers merge with the background. In simple Active and Ambition trim levels, the instrument panel is completely dark.

Even a short trip was enough to understand: I am not ready to change to such a car. For a long time of straining acceleration to 80 km / h, the manager sitting next to me seemed to have managed to tell me about all the loan offers. And God bless her, with maximum speed: the last time I received a fine for exceeding two years ago. Elasticity is so-so, fitting into the flow is a problem. Suitable for taxi drivers and melancholic, for me - no.

Well, modest dynamics would be justified by reliability, as was the case with the previous Octavia with an eight-valve 1.6. The current engine of the EA211 family eats oil no worse than TSI turbo engines! They at least please with temperament, but here ... The company knows about it, but for three years of production they have not been able to overcome the oil-burner: they say that the defect is floating, it does not appear in everyone and not always, but in order to eradicate it, you need to know for sure reason. The reaction of German specialists does not contribute to solving the problem: they say that such a problem exists only in Russia, in other markets, buyers do not complain ... From such a large concern as Volkswagen, you expect a completely different reaction. Well, at least the six-speed hydromechanical "automatic" Aisin pleases with both smooth operation and reliability. But in general Octavia 1.6 goes past me.

Here is a version with a 1.4 TSI turbo engine is more interesting! The output of this engine is almost the same as that of the 1.8 turbo four on my seven-year-old Octavia: 150 hp. and 250 Nm. The dynamics are also similar: up to "hundreds" - in 8.2 seconds. Overtaking such a liftback is easy, traction control is almost perfect: there are still turbo lags, but I'm already used to running gas ahead of the curve.

The presentation car was equipped with a seven-speed DSG “robot” - and it works perfectly: it selects gears competently, quickly drops four steps before overtaking, and twitching when closing dry clutches is a thing of the past. However, these "robots" still do not like traffic in traffic jams: frequent starts and stops are still fatal for them. And although after the modernization of 2014 there were fewer complaints about the DSG, I can only advise a car with such a box for the duration of the warranty period. And Octavia's is still short: two years.

But the Octavia 1.4 TSI didn’t scare me away at all with a “robot”: I am still a supporter of “mechanics”. Suspension! On smooth and slightly rough roads, everything seems to be cool, you can’t find fault with handling, the effort on the steering wheel is exemplary, the car drives into corners like it’s on rails. You get pleasure from riding the Octavia. But as soon as the quality of the asphalt deteriorates to at least an average level, the car turns into a vibration stand. The suspension reads and transmits to the salon all the cracks and roughness of the coating. And after all, there is enough energy intensity, it is possible to break through the suspension only in really serious pits, but it is uncomfortable to ride. The 17-inch tires are partly to blame for this, instead of which I would choose 16-inch tires (I love 15-inch wheels, only the simplest version is put). But to make a choice in favor of Octavia with a semi-independent rear suspension got sick.

Because after that I traveled on the version with the 1.8 TSI engine. Such machines have a multi-link suspension and other calibrations of elastic elements. Another thing! The car is much more tolerant to bumps, the vibration background is less, driving on bad asphalt is more pleasant. The difference in handling is at the level of nuances: in especially steep turns, the multi-link turns the stern a little, but with a calm daily ride - one hell. And with an independent rear suspension, the ground clearance is slightly higher: measuring with a tape measure showed that under the levers there are the same 160 mm as under the engine protection. Twisting beam installed lower: 153 mm.

The 1.8 TSI engine is more powerful than its 1.4-liter relative (180 versus 150 hp), but its maximum thrust is limited at the same level - 250 Nm. Therefore, the difference in dynamics is by no means dramatic: both according to the passport (7.4 seconds to “hundreds”), and according to sensations. However, complaining is a sin. Robot works great too. Brakes? Everything is fine with them, the effort on the pedals is exemplary, there are no criminal releases when hitting bumps. In a word, it is worth dreaming about such an Octavia.

What if you want more? For example, diesel. Unfortunately, in Russia it will no longer be. But you can order versions, as well as a modification with a 1.8 TSI engine and all-wheel drive: I also traveled on such an Octavia. She has a Haldex multi-plate clutch in the rear wheel drive and a six-speed “robot” DQ 250 with wet clutches instead of a “dry” DQ 200 box.

On asphalt, including wet, all-wheel drive does not manifest itself. Of course, in winter, in icy yards, the advantage should become clear, but there is a sense in summer too. I'm moving off the M4 highway to the primer - and into the mountains. The Octavia with a 4x4 nameplate climbs a rather steep climb with confidence, you can even stop: starting on slippery ground mixed with stones is no problem. Even moving a small ditch into the diagonal was successful: after hanging two wheels, the car first froze, but you need not lower the accelerator, then after two or three seconds the electronics will bite the brakes, transfer traction to wheels with solid support - and Octavia will continue moving. The main thing is that there are no sharp changes in the terrain on the way, because the overhangs of the body are large, and the ground clearance is the same 160 mm as that of the front-wheel drive versions. During a short sortie, I struck the bottom on the surface a couple of times, albeit without consequences. But to storm off-road, you still need other cars.

Plus fuel consumption. If the front-wheel drive Octavia with 1.4 and 1.8 engines on the same highway-mountain route "ate" about 8 l / 100 km, then the all-wheel drive version with an increased weight of 95 kg and other transmission ratios consumed ten liters per hundred.

Well, I take all-wheel drive Octavia? But the price list cools the ardor. Such a liftback costs at least 1 million 561 thousand rubles! The fact is that all small-circulation versions of Skoda are brought to Russia from the Czech Republic, so you can’t count on bargain prices. I myself am not ready to part with such an amount yet. I will also leave station wagons to those who really need this type of body: Octavia Combi brought from the Czech Republic is more expensive than a similar liftback by 260-320 thousand rubles. Therefore, further you will have to choose from Russian-assembled cars.

And of these, only the 180-horsepower Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI with a multi-link rear suspension suited me: an excellent combination of comfort, capacity and dynamics. DSG - past, and prices for liftbacks with "mechanics" start at 1 million 236 thousand rubles. The Ambition package, although average in the hierarchy (four airbags, ESP, air conditioning, heated front seats, media system), is insufficient, so we add the profitable Ambition Plus package for 49,600 rubles, which includes climate control, alloy wheels, electric windshield heating, rear parking sensors and sockets in the back row. Another 9,600 rubles for cruise control and 23,000 for security curtains and a third rear head restraint. In total - 1 million 318 thousand.

Given the size and dynamic capabilities - a good offer. I remember what the manager promised me during a dealer test drive: a discount in honor of the launch of the updated Octavia - 60 thousand rubles, the same amount if I rent my car in trade-in. The resulting 1 million 198 thousand is generally excellent. The dealer will estimate my seven-year-old Octavia at about 400 thousand, that is, I will have to pay extra 800 thousand rubles. Plus Casco. But…

Let's go back to the consumer qualities of the car: what will the new Octavia give me compared to my current car of the previous generation, in addition to zero mileage and a guarantee? Not so much: a slightly better ride, a modern media system and electric glass heating. Therefore, I will stay with my own.

But if you have your eye on the updated Octavia, then I will not dissuade you: a very solid and pleasant car. Moreover, both restyled and pre-reform models (these can still be found on sale). And if we are talking about versions of the Russian assembly, then for quite sane money at the present time.
