A car called Lada Kalina Cross was officially presented in the fall of 2014 at the Moscow Motor Show. Immediately after the presentation, it appeared in dealerships in Russia, and then in other CIS countries. Clearance

The exterior of this car evokes conflicting emotions. On the one hand, the car looks like a small crossover. But on the other hand, it is rather a station wagon, whose ground clearance has slightly increased. So the clearance of this model is 180 mm when fully loaded (4 passengers and luggage). In an empty state, as much as 208 mm of space appears between the car and the road surface, which is very solid.

To achieve these figures, the designers had to completely reconfigure the suspension elements, change the location of the spring supports and install modern gas-filled shock absorbers. All these measures made it possible to add 16 mm to the Lada Kalina Cross clearance. Another 8 mm was provided by a new "shoe" consisting of 15 discs and high-profile rubber.

Dimensions (edit)

The machine received the following dimensions: 4048/1700/1562. In this case, the height is indicated taking into account the roof rails. The wheelbase of the Kalina Cross is 2476 mm. Due to the fact that the tires are wider, the wheel track has also increased by 4 mm. The designers had to reduce the steering rack travel by the same figure. As a result, the turning radius is now 5.5 meters instead of the previous 5.2 meters.

Exterior

It can be seen that Togliatti designers tried to make the car more modern and interesting. A new false radiator grille, which has become more elegant than its predecessors, immediately catches the eye. It connects tightly to the headlights. Another outstanding front end feature is the large air intake diffuser. It is divided into two parts by a bumper strip with a license plate. It is the large diffuser that reminds of the car's belonging to the crossover family. Fog lights are located on the sides of the powerful bumper on black plastic inserts.

The engine and gearbox are protected from damage by a thick mechanical pad on the underbody. And the bumpers, side skirts and wheel arches are protected by sturdy black plastic overlays. All this testifies to the fact that Kalina Cross is ready to conquer light off-road conditions. There are black moldings on the doors, and quite massive roof rails on the roof. The aft part is distinguished by a massive and large trunk door. In general, "Lada-Kalina Cross", the characteristics of which speak for themselves, gives the impression of a medium-sized crossover.

Interior

The interior of our hero is completely copied from the usual "Kalina". All the same rough plastic and gray tones. However, in order to somehow dilute the dull look of the cabin, the designers decided to add orange accents to it. Orange can be seen on seat cushions, door upholstery cards, and around and under the steering wheel spokes. Such a contrast raises the mood and even allows you to forget about the dullness of the cabin for a while.

The equipment of the car includes: heated front seats, heated outside mirrors, power steering, adjustable steering wheel height, head restraints for the rear row, audio system with input for CD and USB media, ABS and BAS systems, front airbags, alarm and central locking with remote control function.

The salon can normally accommodate five adults of average build. The noise isolation of this model is slightly better than that of previous versions.

The trunk of the Lada, which we will consider below, has a volume of only 355 liters. When the rear seats are folded down, it increases to 670 liters. But for fastening large and fragile loads, special brackets are provided.

Lada Kalina Cross: specifications

It's time to find out if the car is really ready to join the ranks of crossovers or if it just got a new body kit. The characteristics of the Lada Kalina Cross are much more important than the ambitious appearance.

So, the novelty is available with two motors. The first is a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 87 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The second engine is more in line with the ambitious body of the Lada-Kalina Cross. The technical characteristics of this engine are as follows: volume - 1.6 liters, number of valves - 16, power - 106 liters. sec., gearbox - mechanics or automatic in 5 steps, maximum speed - 178 km / h, acceleration to 100 km / h - 10.8 seconds with manual transmission.

The main reason why the status of a true crossover for Kalina-Cross is still only a utopia is the lack of all-wheel drive. Yes, not all crossovers have. But, as a rule, they have at least one complete set with this most important characteristic. In 2014, the employees of VAZ, being in a hurry from the presentation of the novelty, promised that a little time would pass and the Kalina-Cross would acquire four-wheel drive. Almost two years later, the car is still being produced with front-wheel drive.

Conclusion

As the reviews show, which still does not reach the status of a crossover, it has proven itself well in the market. In fact, this car is nothing more than a raised "Kalina" in the station wagon, but this is not the main thing. The main thing is that it fully corresponds to its price and fits perfectly into the ranks of budget cars.

The car is quite comfortable and spacious, so large families choose it. Spare parts for it are quite inexpensive, which means that it can be used in full. In addition, thanks to the short overhangs, body protection and increased ground clearance, both the curb in the parking lot and the light off-road outside the city are not an obstacle for Kalina. In general, for ordinary people who want to buy an inexpensive universal car, the Lada Kalina Cross is perfect. Photos of the car prove that VAZ is slowly but surely developing, which means that everything is still ahead. And the fact that the characteristics of the car do not quite match its name can be missed.

I PRESCRIBE:

  1. For LADA GRANTA car from 03/20/2013. the list of works on TO-1 is regulated by Notice No. 430-13 dated 06/07/2013. (only valves are adjusted on 8 valve engines). For the car NEW LADA KALINA, the list of works on TO-1 is regulated by Notice No. 424-13 of 23.05.2013.
  2. All LADA GRANTA, NEW LADA KALINA cars, regardless of the release date, in which semi-synthetic engine oil (5W30) is used, fall under the changed scope of work. Information about the engine oil poured into the car is given in the Vehicle Operation Manual, section "For Your Attention!" When the consumer drives to TO-2, the requirement for the presence of records of the TO-1 carried out on vehicles with a 16 valve engine is unreasonable.
  3. At the same time, in the service books for LADA GRANTA cars (circulation since April 2013) and in the service books for NEW LADA KALINA cars, an additional restriction was introduced on the passage of MOT not only in terms of vehicle mileage, but also in terms of vehicle service life. In this regard, I clarify that the passage of the next maintenance according to the service life must be carried out at the end of the year of operation of the car, if it occurs earlier than the passage of the next maintenance according to the mileage is provided. Yes, it’s worth mentioning right away that the model is associated only with the creators themselves. In our opinion, this is just a rattling "shed", which has the maximum, which can be called increased, is the ground clearance. Unlike the traditional cross-version, the ground clearance (183 mm) increased by 23 mm, achieved as a result of the use of elongated springs and - lo and behold - 15-diameter rims. Actually, that's all the "cross-country ability". No all-wheel drive, no additional roll cage, no elastic suspension. However, this does not detract from other advantages of the car. For example, now the rear windows do not ring in the half-open position, the squeaks of plastic are barely noticeable and the fifth door closes effortlessly. And what about the additional anti-corrosion coating and decorative plastic body kit, expressed in fashionable door moldings and extensions of sills and arches. In addition, it finally added to the frankly weak 87-horsepower engine. Plus "machine". True, we have on the test a copy with a five-speed "mechanics", by the way, received a cable drive, like the Datsun on-DO. So what is the car in action?

REASON 1 IF SAFETY IS NOT IMPORTANT

Unlike the eight-valve "brother", a fresh engine in the company with a "handle" does wonders. "Kalina" starts quite briskly and is quite predictable in overtaking at speeds. It's just that it drives, even despite the reinforced fastening of the steering rack and the installation of a more powerful support for the power unit, it is somehow very nervous. Instead of the expected trajectory in the maneuver, you get a sharp jump, which forces you to constant taxiing. Certainly, this is not the same "Kalina", frightening with a lateral somersault in a rapid turn, but the handling is still far from ideal.


If you want to calmly, confidently and safely get from point "A" to point "B" - keep your line and everything will work out. Moreover, only one and only one is responsible for safety here. A sort of reward for the driver for choosing this car. And the results of crash tests initiated by the manufacturer cannot be called outstanding, although according to the requirements for passive safety in the Russian Federation, they are recognized as successful. The fact is that, unlike, domestic tests were carried out only using two methods - imitation of a frontal impact with 40% overlap at a speed of 56 km / h (EuroNCAP - 64 km / h) and a side impact - at a speed of 50 km / h. If in the second case the degree of injury to the driver and passengers turned out to be insignificant, then in the first of the maximum permissible 1000 units the threshold of injuries received by passengers was disappointing 782. Undoubtedly, the indicator is within the normal range, but the fact that the mannequins were not trapped in the twisted "box" does not mean that they are all right.

REASON 2. LACK OF OFF-ROAD QUALITIES - NOT A REASON NOT TO REMOVE FROM ASPHALT

And how does an undercrossover behave on? We managed to test the capabilities of the "rogue" on an artificial offroad track. In fact, it is similar to the one that it uses for off-road driving of its models. What can I say - Kalina Cross drove everywhere, but it gave little pleasure from it. Firstly, on any of the bumps it shakes more abruptly than on a roller coaster (of course, there is no elasticity and softness), and the passengers in the back row, if they are not wearing seat belts, fly around the cabin. And this despite the fact that the suspension is modernized! Okay, let's close our eyes to comfort, which, in general, has never been in domestic cars, but what about the fact that it pierces, and even with such a roar that sometimes it becomes scary?

Let's say more, if we tested the car in real conditions, in particular, on sand or in mud baths, which, unfortunately, we were simply not allowed to do, it is far from the fact that it would have coped without seeding at the very ground clearance. In short, if you don’t feel sorry for the “berry” and yourself, go ahead to the lane, but preferably to the one where the mobile phone catches the network.

REASON 3. IF THE PROBLEMS OF REAR PASSENGERS ARE THEIR PROBLEMS

We have already said how tight it is for the second-row riders on bumps and potholes. However, if this does not stop either them or you, then we go further. By the way, have you ever ridden in a limousine, where, in order to talk to the driver, you need to open a special door that protects the salon from the driver's seat? So: in "Kalina" about the same, only there is no curtain. Let us explain: the conversation between the driver and the rear passengers stops immediately after the car starts to move. This is due to the very weak insulation. No, no jokes - at acceleration or at cruising 80 km / h, in order for your fellow travelers to hear you, you literally need to shout! Although Togliatti residents claim an additional package of vibration-damping materials, including "Shumka" on the rear arches. Apparently, the set was not "additional" enough.

REASON 4. IF YOUR FAVORITE COLOR IS ORANGE

Now about taste. But not about ours with you, but about inherent in the automaker itself. After all, it is completely incomprehensible what guided the plant when releasing Kalina Cross, focusing on pungent orange tones. They even brought out a special one - "Orange". Do all consumers like this? Not at all. Thank you, that there are other, less provocative colors in the range of colors. But what about the interior, which is full of catchy and frankly annoying orange accents?


This "sun" even settled in the seats. According to the "VAZ" people, such a concept definitely refreshes the salon, making it, as they think, stylish and modern. Although this is debatable. Ergonomics and operation of the controls do not cause any complaints - everything functions properly and is perfectly readable. There were no complaints about the review either. But those orange notes ...

REASON 5. IF YOU ARE A PATRIOT

If you have time, then "Kalina" in combination with a 1.6-liter 106-horsepower engine and a five-speed gearbox will get you for 481,300 rubles. True, we must not forget that there is always an alternative to any solution. Moreover, in some cases it is far from the worst, rather the opposite. For example, in the form, which with a 1.7-liter engine and "mechanics" will be released 32,000 cheaper. And it will be with a real all-wheel drive (by the way, about off-road) and comfort that cannot be compared at all. Even cheaper - the front-wheel drive, but no less comfortable Geely MK Cross in a configuration with a 1.5-liter unit and a five-speed gearbox will cost 409,000 "wooden" ones. Yes, the car is from China, so what? Asians have made big and obvious strides forward for a long time. But if, nevertheless, we are not talking about cheaper purchases, we advise you to pay attention to whose initial price tag starts at 544,000 rubles. Perhaps this is the best option. In any case, the "Frenchman" is not deprived of either aesthetics or reliability, and besides, it has quite decent functionality, in particular, cruise control, 16-inch wheels and a chrome package.

Many fans of the AvtoVAZ series of models know that Kalina Cross was created on the basis of Kalina 2 in the station wagon body. Until now, motorists argue: was this a rational decision, and how much the two cars differ from each other. To be honest, the appearance of the VAZ-21946 (aka "Kalina Cross") immediately shows that the car is clearly of increased cross-country ability. But is that where the differences end? Let's look at this issue by making a comparison: Kalina 2 and Kalina Cross.

Specifications

The first thing to start with comparing the two cars is, of course, the main technical characteristics. In this regard, Lada Kalina 2 and Kalina Cross are very similar in some aspects of consideration.

Motors, components and their gearboxes are about the same, the differences are not significant here:

Important parameters in comparing two cars are size and appearance. Something to highlight in them and say that this is the only correct conclusion is impossible, since different people have an individual opinion on this matter: someone needs a bigger car, someone needs a smaller one, not to mention the exterior. Attention! How much a particular car is better in terms of aesthetic parameters - everyone will decide individually. It can be stated for sure that the Kalina Cross is more aggressive and taller, the "station wagon", in turn, is less flashy and is a typical car for city driving.

Interior

The design of the cars inside, despite their general similarity, is by far the most "copied" aspect in all Kalinas. The main differences between the Cross and the "station wagon" are in such features as:

  • completely redesigned seats, more sporty in nature (many note that they are also more comfortable);
  • in some places, the reinforced structure of the fasteners of the entire upholstery (for example, on the arches);
  • in cars of bright orange color, there are inserts of the same color on the seats, doors, etc., in a more restrained color scheme, bright inserts are replaced by gray ones.

The rest of the interior elements of the cabin are completely similar, you will not find any innovations, except for the branded inserts of the name "Cross".

The volume of the trunk has not changed - 355-361 liters in the stock position and 670 - with the seats folded. By the way, the capacity of the tank also remained the same - 50 liters. The decoration is made of standard materials for VAZ: plastic and fabric.

Despite the fact that the Cross in the cabin has been slightly worked out, the interior is practically the same. So in this aspect, it makes no sense to choose between cars.

Passability

Increased passing parameters - that's what Kalina Cross was created for. Without any doubt, the cross-country ability of this car is higher than that of the station wagon. As noted earlier, Kalina Cross's ground clearance is 23 mm higher, this result was achieved thanks to:

  • raising the suspension itself - plus 13-17 mm;
  • installation of 15-inch disks, instead of 14-inch - plus 5-8 mm.

Experienced drivers are in no hurry to enjoy the increased ground clearance, because the higher the car, the less stable it is. Yes, it is, but that is why the suspension has been strengthened and the only correct center of gravity is set. It should be understood that Kalina Cross is not an SUV, but an off-road wagon aimed at overcoming mediocre terrain. He copes with his task quite well, judging by the reviews of the owners.

In addition, the increased ground clearance reduces the risk of sitting on the "bottom", which happens all the time in the conditions of Russian rough terrain. Definitely, the passability is higher at Kalina Cross.

Complete set

Almost the main guideline for many people when choosing a particular car is the availability of functional equipment, that is, useful options. Everyone knows that this aspect depends on the selected configuration. How are things going with them at Kalina 2 and Cross?

Attention! It should be noted right away that Kalina 2 is better in this parameter, because the manufacturer offers to choose between three different configurations with various additions (comfort, comfort +, classic, navigation): Standard, Norma and Lux. While Cross has only two of them without any additions: Norma and Lux.

However, in the choice of a certain configuration, as noted earlier, Kalina 2 is much better. Due to what? Due to the more flexible selection of add-ons, since using various add-ons. packages, you can pick up whatever your heart desires. If we take each addition and each configuration as a separate configuration option, then there are as many as 7, against 2 for Kalina Cross. A significant advantage, right?

The cost of cars is approximately equal: from 450,000 rubles to 600,000. However, Kalina Cross has a slightly lower limit and is 550,000 in the maximum configuration. This is due to the fact that in the maximum Lux the station wagon has an automatic gearbox, instead of a cheaper "robot" from a fellow.

Outcomes

Comparison is a subjective concept, therefore, it is irrational to give a definite answer to the question of Kalina Cross or Kalina 2. Based on the information presented above, everyone will be able to draw a certain conclusion for themselves. The only thing that can be stated objectively is that Kalina is good both in the city and off-road, but Kalina 2 in the station wagon is a more urban, parquet car, but more convenient in terms of choice.
