The history of the W124 family sedans begins in 1991. A remarkable date, it should be noted, associated with the mass of "interesting" events in Russia. So, it was in that very 91st, the famous German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz and the equally popular Porsche, decided to cooperate in the creation of a small series of a sedan. The general project involved the birth of a car equipped with a V8 engine. The strong V8 with solid horsepower turned out to be only one of the notable features. Mercedes E500 in the back of W124.

In addition, the design of the German car received a sports suspension, an upgraded transmission and a reliable reinforced braking system. It is worth noting that the design of the E500 was completely developed by the engineering group of Mercedes-Benz.

Only a partial assembly was carried out by Porsche. The E500's sibling is the E420. These two so-called "tops" have long been remembered by the society of motorists. Even today, cars are positioned no lower than modern models. The 500E version can often be found in the list of competitors of other cars released much later.

How the Mercedes E500 W124 was created in the technological cycle

History of the creation of the model- the process is quite interesting. The transport was created on the basis of an engine taken from the R129 series 500SL model, but underwent significant refinement. As a result of the modernization, Mercedes-Benz engineers managed to get a real monster, with a full cylinder capacity of 5 liters and a useful power of 326 hp. Automotive "nuclear reactor", among other things, equipped:

  • automatic transmission with four steps
  • ASR system (anti-rotation lock)
  • hydropneumatic suspension level adjustment
  • doubled catalyst
  • fuel injection system "LH-Jetronic" instead of "KE-Jetronic"

The result was not long in coming. One of the German "tops" - Mercedes E500 as W124- got the ability to accelerate to a speed of 250 km / h, and the control speed - 100 km / h, could pick up in just 6 seconds after starting from a standstill.

The participation of Porsche specialists in the creation of Mercedes-Benz vehicles

The German city of Zuffenhausen is famous for the fact that the Porsche plant is located on the territory of this settlement, where part of the E500 assembly process took place. Here, in the first stage, the W124 bodies were made, which were then transported for painting to another plant in Sindelfingen, owned by Mercedes-Benz. After painting, everything returned to normal, and the Porsche specialists proceeded to complete the painted body. At the final stage, fully assembled cars were again transported to the possession of Mercedes, where they underwent pre-sale preparation before being sold.

German-made product under the Mercedes-Benz brand

On the shelves of the international market, the car was positioned exclusively as the property of "Mercedes". Actually, the full-fledged traditional symbolism of the famous German brand was in this opinion, plus the identification numbers were most directly related to the noted German company. Distinctive external features of the model were such details as:

  • widened wheel arches
  • rims made of light alloys with a curved "chamomile" cut
  • oversized low-profile tires
  • headlights with independent low and high beam lamps
  • fog lights in the lower part of the front bumper

Epilogue for E420 / E500

German artwork in the form of the W124 sedans is arguably the most successful industrial production at Mercedes-Benz. Only in one class of sedans, more than two million cars were produced and sold during ten years of serial production. The guys from AMG once laid eyes on the E420 / E500 sedans, with their hands several dozen cars were modernized, which later received the E60 AMG marking.

We are not afraid of the gray wolf, Gray wolf, gray wolf! Where do you go, stupid wolf, Old wolf, dire wolf?

Outside

This sedan is living proof that the idea of implanting large motors in small bodies is not just a matter of tuning ateliers. In the late 1980s, Mercedes decided to set the heat on its competitors by releasing a hot remix of its then favorite W 124. Their fellow villagers from Porsche from Stuttgart were invited to help with the arrangement. With such initial data, mediocrity could not be born in principle. The car received universal recognition and the formidable nickname "Wolf" to boot. The moniker has stuck firmly to the sedan, having stood the test of time.

Outwardly, the favorite of taxi drivers all over the world is a classic from the classics. Bruno Sacco clearly drew the W 124 with an eye on the younger 190, but for all the stylistic similarities, the older model, as expected, makes a more solid impression. Subordination, reinforced by signs of restyling in 1993, is impeccably observed.

From anywhere you look, the sedan exudes confident well-fed arrogance. The very spirit of a true Mercedes, which many lack in his heirs. The car just doesn't have bad angles. The dark green square body is completely devoid of excessive embellishments. Although it was the E500 that had every right to dress up in full. It took 18 days of manual assembly to produce each piece. But wings and other tinsel are for amateurs. Muscular fenders hiding a wider track and more massive bumpers - the "five hundredth" is modest, like a true bourgeois.

Inside

The door closes with a characteristic gun click. Salon "five hundredth" is in complete harmony with the exterior. At one time, Mercedes invested a lot of effort and money in the design of the 124th. Unsurprisingly, the interior has absorbed this German solidity at the molecular level. Touch anything - the feeling that everything has been done for centuries does not leave you for a second.

For a 23-year-old car, which has covered most of its 160,000 km on the not always hospitable Russian roads, the interior is in excellent condition. Volchara managed to survive in the nineties, held out in the zero and without any restorations looks like he just left the stocks of the plant in Zuffenhausen.

The style of the interior hung halfway from the purebred "eighties" to the king of the "nineties". The vertical front panel, cast from high-quality vinyl, protrudes into the cabin by no more than 30 cm, so the margin of internal space is at the level of modern business-class models, surpassing the old man in size.

Thick black leather is upholstered in door inserts and gorgeous seats that are in no way inferior to buckets. The standard trim of the banal "Mercedes" walnut root has been replaced with strips of noble dark wood. It turned out both brutal and stylish. This is where the black ceiling asks, but such a whim was not provided even by the list of options, and the "collective farm" is contraindicated for such machines.

Equipped with "five hundredth" to match its special status. Dual-zone climate control, power seat adjustment (driver's seat with memory), sunroof, top-end Becker audio system and other delights of a rich life. On the second row, two separate chairs are optionally installed. It is a special honor to be a passenger here. There is enough legroom, and the seat itself pleases with a good back profile and tangible lateral support. The high-end model is underlined by individual reading lamps in the side pillars and an electric blind on the rear window. Such a gray wolf is definitely not scary to us.

In move

"Well, Bavarians, do you still drive tractors?" - The joke of Sami Naseri, told by him in the film "Taxi", cost the creators of the picture $ 2 million. Looking at the characteristics of the E500, it is difficult to understand why the "Mercedes" were so offended. 326 l. with., removed from the five-liter eight, accelerate the sedan to a hundred in almost six seconds. The only thing left for the French was that it was envious to troll the Germans with the cinema records of the non-existent Peugeot.

In absentia, being led to a loud nickname, I considered the "five hundredth" uncompromising sports sedan. Therefore, having easily adjusted an electric chair for myself, having adapted to the family mirrors of different sizes, I turn on the Drive and, drowning the gas, prepare for a fight with a fierce beast. But already at the next traffic light it became clear that I was in vain grasping a stranglehold on the bus steering wheel.

At city speeds, the "five hundredth" is comfortable, as befits a car with a star on the hood. Despite the sharper steering wheel compared to the standard W124 (three turns from lock to lock), the stability on the straight line did not suffer, but confidence in cornering appeared. "The five hundredth » with its lightweight steering, it still keeps you at a distance, but it is clearly more agile than its dashing 90s brethren.

The old-fashioned four-speed "automatic" left the most pleasant impression. The gears change smoothly, and a slight thoughtfulness with a sharp press on the gas is more than compensated for by a powerful traction of 470 Nm. The sports-tuned suspension is such only by the "Mercedes" standards of the last century. The chassis perfectly absorbs asphalt joints, tram tracks and other road "scum". Wobbling propensity is moderate, even by current standards. The branded reinforced concrete directional stability has not gone anywhere either. It seems that there are no forces in the world that can knock off the intended trajectory of the Wolf, rushing in pursuit of the game.

Fuel consumption Mercedes-Benz E500 W124
100 km

Confident manners in any of the modes, comfort, built to the absolute, coupled with impressive power, "five hundredth" can be a real Gran Turismo, albeit with four doors. This beast was trained to devour kilometers of motorways, delicately (and not very much) driving away any husk from the left lane. With a fury rushing to fulfill the will of the owner, the Wolf simultaneously scattered small competitors and forever staked out a place in the hearts of true fans of the brand.

Purchase history

For the first time, Vitaly learned about the 500E / E500 by watching the same comedy thriller by Luc Besson "Taxi". It was only in 2011 that the dream of owning a car “like a movie robber's” came true. Then Vitaly bought his first E500. The car was not in the best condition. Realizing that the restoration of this specimen is a costly and troublesome business, Vitaly sold it, after buying another, better preserved sedan. Then there was another and another.

This Volchok is already the fourth in a row. He appeared at Vitaly by accident. Friends said that there is a collector who owns an E500 in excellent condition, and he is not at all averse to parting with it.

The meeting with the car brought many surprises. 1993 release, imported to Russia in 1997, "native" mileage of 160,000 km, good technical condition and only two owners of TCP. It was simply impossible to resist. The purchase of the Volchka cost Vitaly a little less than a million rubles.

Repair

Immediately after the purchase, the E500 went to the boxes for troubleshooting. Vitaly's goal was to bring the car into a state as close as possible to a new one.

Taillights

25,000 rubles

The body of the car was in good condition - only the paintwork needed to be updated. For painting, Vitaly personally disassembled the sedan, removing the engine and interior. The color of the new paint is №199 (according to the catalog it completely coincides with the VIN number). Along the way, all the external rubber bands and moldings were updated (the cost of each is about 12,000 rubles). All optics were replaced with a new one. Only the taillights cost 25,000 rubles. Also installed here is a new rear window, bought for 53,000 rubles. The high price is due to the use of extremely thin heating threads that are not afraid of damage from the use of an electric lifting curtain. Such glasses were installed only on expensive modifications of the W 124.

New throttle assembly

120,000 rubles

Long standing idle affected the technical condition of the "five hundredth". Vitaly completely went through the suspension, replaced the brakes. The largest amount of work was done with the engine. There were no major repairs, but the motor underwent a total revision. A new throttle assembly (120,000 rubles), a flow meter, all consumables, plus a recently replaced cooling pipe - this is not a complete list of new parts inherited by the legendary M119. The engine compartment is adorned with new factory decals.

The interior has been preserved in excellent condition thanks to the factory toning. No restoration of the skin or plastic was required. The electronics are also fine. All options, including the electric drives and seat memory, work perfectly.

The work was carried out in a workshop for the restoration of oldtimers, which is headed by Vitaly. Spare parts, with rare exceptions, are new and strictly original. The search for parts took about six months, the work itself lasted about the same. The investment in a car is almost equal to the cost of buying it.

Improvements

Vitaly sincerely considers the image of the standard E500 to be almost perfect, but he could not resist and made a couple of changes.

Connoisseurs will note that 18-inch Evo wheels have never been fitted to this model. Regular size is 17 inches. With all due respect to the work of the Stuttgart engineers, Vitaly believes that this is too little for such a car. So, a Japanese replica of the legendary "Mercedes" disks appeared on Volchka. The wheels are installed through centimeter spacers.

The second revision concerns the interior and inspires special respect. Vitaly got the car with a standard nut root trim. Now the car is decorated with inserts made of dark wood (in the common people "Bird's eye"). This finish was the prerogative of the limited edition version of the E500 Limited. The panels were found by Vitaly purely by accident. He just saw an advertisement for the sale of interior parts from the E500, where the desired panels were visible in the background. Negotiations with the seller were not easy, he clearly understood what a rarity was in his hands. As a result, we bargained for 70,000 rubles for a complete set of inserts.

Mercedes-Benz is a manufacturer that has proven and shown that cars can be incredibly high quality, reliable, beautiful and comfortable.

Over the history of the German brand, many families have already been created. Moreover, each of them has its own leader, a star.

The W124 line is in great demand even 20 years after the end of production. The star of the line is the E500 model, which received the nickname "Wolf" or "Volchok" among the people for the 326 hp engine. and outstanding technical performance.

Handsome Wolf

The name was assigned to the Mercedes-Benz W124 E500 during the "dashing nineties". Interestingly, motorists really liked this name, it is well established and is actively used in our time. But most importantly, the car remains in demand in the same way as when it appeared on the market.

Examining a car from a photo is one thing. It is quite another to find out what is hidden under the hood, which engine was proposed by German engineers, what is the body.
We will try to tell you in detail about the technical characteristics and parameters.

Engine and gearbox

Engine Capabilities and Consumption

And what is this 326-horsepower 5-liter engine capable of? - Quite a lot, given the size of the car.

  • Acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour - in 6.1 seconds;
  • Maximum speed - 250 kilometers per hour (artificially limited);
  • Fuel tank volume - 90 liters;
  • Recommended fuel type - AI95, gasoline;
  • City consumption - 16.9 liters per 100 kilometers
  • Highway consumption - 10.3 liters per 100 kilometers.

History of success

Now let's plunge a little into the past, study the history of the creation of this car. This will allow you to understand why, in addition to the powerful engine, the Mercedes Volchok is so popular.

The story began in 1991, when sedans from the W124 family were born. At the same time, the Company entered into an agreement with the manufacturer Porsche. The goal was to create a special version of the sedan with a V8 engine under the hood. Of course, as a result, the car stood out not only with its powerful engine.

Porsche's task was a partial assembly. The E500 has a sibling, the E420.

In addition to the powertrain, the engineers worked hard on the following components:

  • Sports suspension
  • Advanced gearbox
  • Reinforced braking system

From an engineering point of view, Mercedes Volchok is deservedly considered a purely creation of Mercedes-Benz, which is destined to compete with BMW products forever.

Technological features

From the point of view of the technical capabilities of the car, its history is quite interesting. The car was based on an engine that the German engineers had borrowed from the 500SL in the R129 series. At the same time, the refinement of the power unit turned out to be significant.

What have you achieved as a result?

  1. The displacement of the 8-cylinder engine has been increased to 5 liters.
  2. Engine power reached 326 horsepower.
  3. In addition to the engine, the car received an automatic four-speed gearbox.
  4. The car was equipped with an anti-rotation system - ASR.
  5. The suspension level became possible to adjust due to the hydropneumatic system.
  6. The catalyst was doubled exactly.
  7. The old KE Jetronic injection system was replaced with the more advanced LH Jetronic.

What is the result? As a result, the car was able to accelerate to 250 kilometers per hour, which is not a limit, but an artificial limitation. Plus, up to a hundred, the Wolf easily picked up from a place in 6 seconds. And this is despite its weight.

Role of Porsche

Specialists from another equally well-known Porsche Company have put their efforts into creating the car. To be more precise, they helped Mercedes-Benz to produce Volchkov. Porsche made no claims to authorship of the W124 500 project.

How was the production scheme for the powerful version of the W124 carried out?

  • The Porsche plant is located in the city of Zuffenhausen, Germany. Partial assembly took place here. This plant provided the construction of the body
  • The finished body was sent for painting to the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen.
  • After painting, the body again returned to the Porsche, where experts assembled the Mercedes E 500 Volchok completely
  • After assembly, she again moved to the MB plant, where specialists carried out pre-sale preparation.

External features

Now that the car was fully assembled, it was sent to Mercedes-Benz dealerships, presenting the car as their own author's project. Whether the Porsche camp was offended or not is hard to say.

How could buyers determine that in front of them is not one of the usual W124 sedans (although the language does not dare call them ordinary), but a modernized, powerful version of the E500, relying only on external characteristics?

Mercedes Volchok stood out against the background of its fellows with several bright elements, which can only be overlooked by a person who is not versed in cars:

  • Widened wheel arches
  • "Chamomile" curly cutouts adorned the new alloy wheels
  • The car was standing on wide low-profile tires
  • The front optics received independent high and low beam lamps
  • Fog lights are located at the bottom of the front bumper

What's next?

And then came a period of incredible success. The executives of Mercedes-Benz themselves admit that their W124 sedans have been the most successful project for the enterprise in its entire history. And "Volchok" personified the top, a real decoration of the entire line.

Not surprisingly, the 124 body is still in demand today. Sedans of this series for 10 years of production have been sold worldwide in the amount of more than 2 million copies.

Soon specialists from the leading tuning studio - AMG drew attention to the E500. They took Mercedes Volchok into work and made a real ferocious Wolf out of it. These modifications are known all over the world under the E60 AMG designation.

The price of the issue

Another important point is the cost of the car.

During the 1990s, when the car was just beginning to appear on the market, it was almost impossible to purchase it due to the limited edition in Russia and the impressive cost.

But even in those days there were a lot of people who paid 150 thousand German marks for their unique, powerful Mercedes Volchok. At the moment it is about 75 thousand euros or 5.5 million rubles.

What cars of this Company can be purchased today for similar money? Modern sports car. A striking example is the SL400 model. Its 3.0 AT version costs about 5.4 million rubles, while the power of this car is only 13 horses higher than the capabilities of the Wolf.

But that was when the 124 Volchok was just appearing on the market. For what money is it really possible to buy it today? Obviously, not for 5 million rubles.

After analyzing the used car market and examining the proposals for the E500, we can draw the following conclusion. For a car in perfect condition, aged 20 years with a mileage of 100 thousand kilometers, you will have to pay only 1.3 million rubles. This is four times less than the amount it originally cost.

Frankly, not very many are ready to give that kind of money for such a car. Considering the quality, reliability and capabilities of the engine, this is a small price for a car of this level.

There are a couple more points that I would like to draw your attention to.

  1. Origin of name. It will not be possible to give an exact answer, since the origins of the name "Volchok" do not exist. According to the most common version, the car received such a nickname because of the saying about a wolf in sheep's clothing. Here we are talking about the fact that the car is beautiful, interesting, and incredible power is hidden behind such a presentable shell. Believe in this version or not, decide for yourself.
  2. Are the E500 and 500E completely different cars? Sometimes the name E500 is found, and in some cases the name is 500E. Is this a typo or two different cars? Not that, and not the other. Indeed, there are two variants of the Wolf - E500 and 500E. How do they differ from each other? Watch video reviews. Couldn't find anything? Not surprising. How are they different? Yes, nothing, except for the turn signals, made in orange. So don't get confused.

As you can see, this is an amazing car ahead of its time. How else to explain the fact that this option remains one of the most desired cars for millions of buyers. They talk about such projects with sadness - "Yes, today such machines are no longer made." And this is the bitter truth.

Mercedes 124 - a history of 12 years, new technologies, design, popularity and demand. The story that laid the foundation for the E-class generation. A story that they never tired of talking about.

Stages of development of the Mercedes 124

Mercedes benz in the period from 1984-1996 created a whole series of 124 cars and all of them were successful. The W124 was a sedan and was intended to replace the equally popular W123. Mercedes C124 - a car in the back of a coupe. And 124 is a convertible.
The S124 was produced as a station wagon. Its release was the longest. In 1996, the last Mercedes S124 rolled off the assembly line, thus completing the production of the 124th line.
However, in India, E220 and E250 Diesel continued to be assembled from ready-made W124 machine components until 1997.

Changes in the exterior of the Mercedes 124 before and after restyling

The Mercedes 124 acquired not only advanced technologies, but also design innovations, improving them twice.
Even before the first restyling, the W124 car looked much more impressive than its predecessors. The length of the W124 has been increased. Car manufacturers installed only 1 wiper on the front windshield, which in no way affected the quality of its functionality and added heating to the windshield washer system.

A modern 124 body appeared. Moldings made of plastic were placed on the bumper and side parts of the car. This decision was not made with the aim of radically changing the design of the car, but in order to improve aerodynamics. Thanks to this innovation, the air flow was distributed exclusively under the car, the noise from the headwind was minimized, and in all Mercedes 124s, fuel consumption decreased. The weight of the car has increased, for example, the e320 weighed 2040 kg, against 200 D - 1910 kg.

The Mercedes C124 boasted a high roof. The rear of the car has been designed in such a way that the passengers in the back feel as comfortable as possible. The car, like the W124, had moldings. The main difference from the Mercedes w124: the moldings were much wider and painted in the color of the car.

First restyling (period 1889-1893)

At Mercedes w124, the width of the moldings has become wider. One of the drawbacks of this design decision was the frequent theft. They were easily removed and later received the name "foliage" (to strip the foliage).
On top of the foliage, narrow silver trims were installed, which visually went along the entire perimeter of the car. Bumpers and side mirrors were painted in the color of the car. Chrome lining was installed on the door handles, and the windshield and rear windows were framed in purple.

Second restyling (period 1893-1896)

The second restyling made dramatic changes in the entire lineup of the 90s. Some argue that this is a coincidence, but some are confident in the deliberate change and recognition of the W124 as an E-class car.

On 124 cars, they began to build a modified radiator grille into the hood. The principle was similar to the Mercedes S class. A new Mercedes badge was installed on top, the color of the bulbs in the turn signals was changed to yellow-orange, and the body itself was made transparent. The bumper cover was painted in the color of the car, and the rear was extended to the wheel arches. The boot lid and taillights have also been redesigned. New design wheel covers were installed on the wheels, and the Mercedes logo was applied to the rims.

Features of the interior of the Mercedes 124 before and after restyling

Before restyling, the interior of the W124 practically did not differ from its predecessors. From the innovation, the reclining rear head restraints were noted for improved visibility when moving back. The head restraints were controlled using a special button installed on the front of the console.

When restyling the Mercedes 124, the designers focused on prestige and convenience. They installed new chairs, added natural wood to the door and torpedo parts. The dashboard was impressive, and the car as a whole looked very expensive.
The back row of seats in the Mercedes w124 reclined to increase the luggage volume. The functionality of the cabin was close to that of the S124 station wagon.

The security system of the car has changed. After restyling, 1 more airbag was added for the front passenger. Thanks to the central locking system, the car could be opened without a key. Added power windows and door lighting, which was activated when opened. The car was equipped with two-way climate control and memory seat adjustment.
Particular attention can be paid to the W124 Sportline package. In this option, the steering wheel and gearshift knob were made of leather. 15th radius rubber, stiff suspension and low ground clearance typical of sports cars. The W124 Sportline was also available in other versions of the 124 range besides the 4MATIC.

Engine modifications 124 specifications

The 124 line had something to surprise. At the time of production, the lineup occupied a leading position. In just 12 years, 14 different modifications of the W124 have appeared. Among the powerful and popular versions that will certainly go down in the history of the automotive business are Mercedes w124 e500 (Mercedes spinning top) and AMG w124 e60.

Mercedes w124 e500 or mercedes top

In the 90s, for the first time, mb resorted to outside help to create its cars. It was an amazing collaboration between two big Mercedes-Porsche companies. Together they developed the most powerful sports car of the W124 modification at that time - the Mercedes e500 w124. It became the main competitor to the BMW M5 E34. However, Porsche developed only the engine for the new version, Mercedes took over the rest. That is why this modification is considered the brainchild of the Mercedes company.

Motor 124: V-engine 124 eight cylinders, power 326 hp, volume 5 liters, automatic transmission, acceleration w124 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds, top speed 250 km / h.
The Mercedes e500 featured improved braking, ASR traction control, a double-enlarged catalyst, new electronic injection and a sports car suspension.
The exterior of the Mercedes w124 e500 adds fog lights that were attached to the lower part of the front bumper, alloy wheels with 8 holes, low-profile ZR16 tires and widened wheel arches (wheelbase dimensions 2800 mm.).

Dimensions Mercedes E500:

  • Width 1740 mm
  • Length 4750 mm
  • Height 1431 mm
  • Trunk volume 520 L

The interior of the Mercedes w124 e500 includes air conditioning, trim seats in a medium-sized cage and power windows for the driver and passenger windows.
By the standards of the 90s, the Mercedes w124 e500 cost fabulous money and had a nickname - a Mercedes spinning top, its price was approximately several tens of thousands of dollars. Now a Mercedes spinning top can be purchased in the region of 500,000 rubles.

W124 e60 amg

The most powerful among all AMG w124 developments is the E60.
6 liter E60 with 8-cylinder engine automatic with 381 hp. accelerated in just 5.4 seconds. up to 100 km / h. The W124 e60 amg reached a top speed of 282 km / h and performed better than the e500.
The suspension and injection system have been redesigned and the wheel radius has been increased to R18.

You may face these problems

Malfunctions in KE-Jetronic

In most 124 models, the KE-Jetronic injection system was installed before restyling, after restyling, Mercedes manufacturers replaced it with an electronic LH-Jetronic. Despite this, the KE-Jetronic system is often encountered and has a number of problems. Firstly, it is vulnerable to time, like any other device, and secondly, it does not tolerate dirt in fuel.
Ke Jetronic requires a lot of effort to repair, so check the fuel meter and fuse box first. Fuel dispenser - distributes fuel from the injectors. The dispenser can be adjusted independently or at a service center.

Problems in the W124 Comfort unit

W124 The comfort unit is the most sophisticated electronic system that connects the central locking with the side windows. In other words, when the Lock of the car is closed, the relay transfers control to the unit and the windows are closed. It is worth noting that this functionality works only with the standard alarm system. In most cases, with a new alarm W124, the comfort unit will not be reconfigured. If you have a standard system, then you should pay attention to the fuse box. They may have burned out and need to be replaced.

Malfunctions in the central lock

Central locking is a very convenient feature that still remains in the TOP in-demand options. Against the background of the batteries in the 124 line weakened over time, many are faced with the problem of how to open the 124 and what to do if the car does not start.

There are 2 options:

  1. Opening the central lock by opening (remove the rubber band, put a rag, pull the glass frame from above, press the wire on the central locking button)
  2. Recharge the battery (lift the car, put + on the starter)

How much freon is needed to fill the air conditioner in W124?

Feature for W124.

  • Refrigerant: R134a
  • Refrigerant amount: 950
  • Oil quantity: 40
  • PAG: 46

What you need to know when choosing a Mercedes 124

First, decide what kind of Mercedes you want: before restyling, after restyling or Mercedes E class. Their functionality, exterior and interior are different.
It is important to find a car with the best bodywork, as it rots over the years and repairs will take a lot of time and money. And the front and rear suspension of the w124 is susceptible to Russian roads.
Arrange a crash test for the car and make sure its driving performance. And, when buying, it is better to immediately change the oil filter and fuses.

Undercarriage feature W124

At the rear of the W124 there are 5 levers, thanks to which the rear suspension of the W124 has become more maneuverable. At the front, the shock absorber has been decoupled from the springs, so the front suspension is responsive to Russian roads.
The 124 station wagon has made it possible to adjust the height of the rear so that the car does not sag under various loads.
In the entire line, after the restyling of 124, there is a power steering and an ABS braking system. In most versions, rear-wheel drive is installed.

In the mid-1980s, Mercedes-Benz management realized that the company needed a model that could compete with the BMW M5 of the E34 series. Mercedes turned to Porsche for help: the company at that time was experiencing serious financial difficulties and accepted the order with great pleasure. The bestseller Mercedes W124 was taken as a basis, which Porsche turned into a "devourer" of motorways.

Outside, the differences from conventional versions are less significant: the wheel arches have become wider.

The most important thing, of course, is the engine. Porsche has redesigned the intake manifolds of the new 5-liter V8 and replaced the LE-Jetronic with the more efficient LH-Jetronic. All this made it possible to increase the torque from 450 to 480 Nm.

The engine mounts have been moved downward to lower the center of gravity. The battery was sent to the luggage compartment. The capacity of the fuel tank was increased to 90 liters and the speed limiter was removed - the car must travel on highways and have a long range. A number of parts were borrowed from the Mercedes SL R129 (introduced in 1989): front suspension elements, differential and disc brakes. The serial 4-speed automatic transmission was not touched.

Mercedes 500 E (E 500 after restyling) amazes, first of all, by the extraordinary work of the suspension. This car is not for spectacular skids. Steadfastness is his middle name. The sedan is very difficult to unbalance, even with sharp and abrupt maneuvers for which it was not designed. There is no limited-slip differential here, and the traction control system does not deactivate.

Mercedes did not set the task of creating a runaway car that is obedient in strong hands. This is the prerogative of the BMW M5. The 500 E demonstrates its power more delicately and elegantly. It's not the V8's performance that matters. The main thing is stability and calmness at 100, 150 and 200 km / h.

Another uniqueness of the Mercedes 500 E is its almost complete manual assembly. Each piece traveled from the Porsche assembly plant in Rössl to the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen and back. The body was painted with great care and protected from corrosion. The entire production process took 18 days and cost a lot of money.

The front seats are electrically adjustable.

The exclusive character of the 500 E has been a source of pride for Mercedes. The end price was appalling. The Mercedes 500 E cost as much as two 300 E and 20 percent more than the BMW M5. At that time, they were asking for 134,000 German marks.

For five years of production, about 10,479 units of 500 E and E 500 were created. Today, European market experts are unanimous: the cost of used Mercedes 500 E and E500 begins to rise noticeably. Who bought a car a few years ago has a chance to make money, provided that he has kept the German sedan in a really flawless condition. And it's not difficult at all. 500 Е amazes not only with the high quality of workmanship and elaboration, but also with reasonable prices for spare parts.

Separate seats are installed at the back. 4-seater car.

Today it is not easy to find a Mercedes 500 E, but a well-groomed copy and even more so. In the secondary market for an exclusive sedan they ask from 170,000 rubles to ... attention! ... 980,000 rubles!

Model history

The Mercedes 500 E was introduced in 1990. In 1991, the model was exported to the United States. In 1992, the 400 E version was introduced with the same V8, but without body modifications. In 1993, the sedan underwent a facelift and was renamed Mercedes E 500. A characteristic feature is wider lining in the lower part of the body. In 1995, production of the 500 was discontinued.

Typical malfunctions:

Malfunctions of electronics, and corrosion of the insulation of the wiring;

Failure of the suspension self-leveling system;

Broken transmission.

Conclusion

The biggest surprise of the W124 E 500 is that it looks like a German taxi and drives like a Porsche. In fact, the Mercedes 500 E is not a sports car, but an ultra-fast sedan without a motorway speed limiter.
