Legendary 2131 model

Niva, the fuel consumption of which depends primarily on the specific brand of this car and its engine, is a popular and inexpensive Russian SUV. For example, from 1976 to the present time, a 1.6-liter engine 2106 has been installed on the VAZ 2121 model, which has the following characteristics:

  • cylinder block - cast iron;
  • food - injector or carburetor;
  • engine type - in-line;
  • cylinder diameter - 79 mm;
  • four cylinders;
  • two valves per cylinder;
  • the power of the car - at 5400 rpm - 75 hp;
  • torque - at 3000 rpm - 116 Nm;
  • fuel - AI92;
  • motor weight - 121 kg;
  • oil consumption 0.7 liters per 1000 km;
  • the amount of oil in 2106 is 3.75 liters;
  • the amount of oil poured during measurement - 3.5 liters;
  • engine resource according to the plant - 125,000 km, in practice - up to 180-200 thousand km.

Different models of VAZ 2121 and fuel consumption

Big trunk

The VAZ 2121 engine requires high-quality oil and sometimes "eats" it up to a liter per 1000 kilometers. In this case, cheap analogues are inappropriate, because they contribute to the expansion of the cylinder diameter by 0.15 mm for every 60,000 kilometers, which degrades the quality of the engine. In addition, incorrect oil viscosity directly affects fuel consumption, so it is better to follow the recommendations: 5W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40, 5W-40 samples are suitable for the 2106 engine, in which the first digit indicates the lower temperature limit, and the second - top. Very viscous oils turn into a jelly-like mass in the cold, which the Niva oil pump may not be able to handle.

With correct operation, gasoline consumption on the Niva 2121 is 10.3 liters of gasoline per 100 km in the city, about 7.4 liters on the highway and about 10 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle.

On more modern models 21213 and 21214 are carburetor and injection engines, respectively. They began to be produced in 1994, and they have the following characteristics:

  • cylinder block - cast iron;
  • four cylinders with two valves per cylinder;
  • cylinder diameter 21213 - 8.2 cm;
  • engine size - 1690 cubic cm;
  • power at a speed of 5200 per minute - 81 liters. With.;
  • torque at 3000 rpm. - 125 Nm;
  • engine weight - 117 kg;
  • suitable fuel - AI93;
  • engine oil volume - 3.75 liters;
  • when replacing, about three and a half liters of oil from the category 5W-30, 15W-40, 10W-10, 5W-40 are poured;
  • engine life - according to the plant, about 80 thousand km, in life - up to 150 thousand km.

Injector 21214 "eats" more than VAZ 2121

Salon of a domestic SUV

The injector on 21214 has the following scheme of operation: data on air consumption, crankshaft movement, coolant temperature, detonation in the engine, fuel consumption, voltage in the on-board network, etc. are received from the vehicle nodes to a number of sensors. After receiving the information, the control unit gives signals about the order of fuel supply, the operation of the ignition system, the diagnostic system, the operation of the idle speed controller. The injector changes the injection parameters depending on the received data.

This system includes such components as sensors, a controller, an injector (injectors) directly, a gasoline pump, and a pressure regulator. In it, the pump supplies fuel, the pressure regulator keeps the difference between the pressure in the nozzles and the air gap in the intake manifold. And the ECU processes the information received from the sensors.

Injection engines of Niva 21214 machines, with improper care, lose their efficiency, increasing fuel consumption, and often start to triple. As a rule, the problem lies in dirty engine injectors, which give poor mixture formation and gasoline atomization. The nozzles can be cleaned independently when purchasing additional materials in the amount of about 500 rubles (including: a diamond key for “8”, a carburetor cleaner, a vacuum hose for a distributor, a syringe with an outlet diameter of 1 cm, an electrical wire with a toggle switch and a light bulb, rubber rings injectors, 8 pieces, O-rings for fuel pipes - 4 pieces).

In a car service, this service costs about 1,500 rubles. The injector is considered a good fuel injection system, but it is expensive, of little repair, requires high-quality gasoline, special diagnostic equipment and expensive repair service. Therefore, many owners of the VAZ 2121 prefer a carburetor to it.

Models Niva 21213 and 21214 are more “gluttonous” than Niva 2121. The engine consumes 11.5 liters in the city, 8.3 liters on the highway, and about 10.5 liters per hundred kilometers in the combined cycle, according to the manufacturer . In practice, for some hunters in the taiga, the car "eats" about 16 liters of gasoline, and in urban conditions - 13-14 liters per "hundred".

Reinforced suspension

The 2130 engine, first released in 1993, is on the Niva 2131 car. Its technical parameters are as follows:

  • cast iron cylinders;
  • food - carburetor or injector;
  • row type;
  • four cylinders, each of which has two valves;
  • cylinder diameter - 8.2 cm;
  • engine volume on model 2131 - 1.8 liters;
  • power at 5200 rpm - 82 horsepower;
  • torque at 3200 rpm is 139 Nm;
  • engine weight 122 kg;
  • oil is poured in the same volume as on the VAZ 2121 Niva;
  • oil consumption from 0.7 liters per 1000 kilometers;
  • work life according to the plant - 80 thousand km, according to users up to 180 thousand km

Content

In 1993, on the basis of the three-door SUV VAZ-2121 Niva, its extended 5-door version VAZ-2131 was released, originally intended for export. Due to its reliability, unpretentiousness and sufficiently high off-road qualities at a low price, it has gained popularity in Europe, as well as in Russia. The release of this model was discontinued in 2016 - it was replaced by the Lada 4x4 5D Urban model.

VAZ-2131 Niva

Initially, the VAZ-2131 was equipped with a VAZ-21213 carburetor engine with a volume of 1.7 liters and a power of 82 hp. There was also a version with a VAZ-2130 engine with a volume of 1790 cm3. Its power was also 82 hp, but the torque was higher - 135 Nm versus 125 Nm.

Since 2001, instead of carburetor engines, a more modern VA-21214 injection engine of the same volume has been installed, but with an increase to 83 hp. power and torque of 129 Nm. All engines were fitted with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Fuel consumption rate VAZ-2131 Niva per 100 km

  • Sergei, Khanty-Mansiysk. My Niva VAZ-2131 was bought in 2012. Vehicle manufactured in 2005, with an injector and power steering. Of the minuses - fuel consumption is large, in summer 12-13 liters, in winter 14-18 liters. Thinking about how to put HBO.
  • Nikolay, Moscow. I drive a Chevrolet Epica, but after buying a dacha, my wife and I decided to buy something affordable and passable, because sometimes even in summer after a good rain you can’t get there. I found a good Niva in a five-door body, 2009. The 1.7-liter injection engine is rather weak after Epica, but it will go for trips to the country. Consumption is an average of 11.5 liters per 100 km. I’ll say right away that it’s not suitable for a serious forest, it’s too long, but it’s confidently rushing off-road.
  • Egor, Norilsk. I specially took the car for the winter - though I bought it in the summer. I decided to take the Niva in a long body - there are still more places in it, since in the three-door rear, only the children will sit down. Consumption on the highway is 10 liters, and I drive 120 km / h. In the city in the summer up to 13 liters, in winter it all depends on the weather - it happened that it reached 20 liters. In general, the car is satisfied.
  • Peter, Kostroma. I have been using Niva for 7 years in a row, and VAZ-2131. The one I’m driving now is already the third in a row - this time I took not a carburetor, but an injection one, it really has a smaller consumption - in the city an average of 12 liters, no more. But the build quality is just awful. Yes, and the nodes themselves are go ... nye, the clutch died at 28 thousand km, the body has already begun to rust, the paint on the bumpers at the end of the first season has peeled off. I won't buy Niva again.
  • Denis, Novosibirsk. I drive a Corolla, but for weekend trips to nature, I decided to take Land-Niver - a five-seat Niva VAZ-2131. The carburetor was not considered fundamentally, I found a good option with an injector. Before that, I had a VAZ-2121, and so they differ a lot. Firstly, the interior trim is really better, and secondly, the long-awaited power steering has appeared. And thirdly - thanks to the injector, the consumption on the highway is about 10 liters, the city in summer up to 14 liters, in winter up to 17 liters. On the old Niva it was even a little more, despite the fact that it is lighter.
  • Fedor, Altaysk. In 2010, I bought a rather rare modification of the 31st Niva - a pickup truck. It's the best for me for work. I had to invest in repairs, bring some points to mind, but now the car is just fire - an average consumption of 10 liters per 100 km, but I can transport whatever I want.
  • Rustam, Grozny. The car was bought for trips through the mountains. It has a lot of shortcomings, ranging from a wretched interior and ending with a frankly weak engine of only 83 hp, despite the fact that the average consumption is from 9 to 11 liters. But at the same time, it is very reliable - since 2011, rolling 27,000 km in the mountains is a serious indicator, the cross-country ability is excellent, but inferior to the short-wheelbase one - the designers did not think it through, the hodovka is still the same, but the weight has increased and the geometry has also changed.
  • Ahmed, Penza. At first I drove a Niva VAZ-21213, with a carburetor engine. Cons - the carburetor and the interior are small, so in 2010 I bought an elongated Niva 2131, but with an injection engine. I am completely satisfied with the car and the consumption is small - 12.5 l / 100 km.

And we have already talked about the consumption of many other cars. Surely among you there are owners and drivers of the famous domestic SUV Niva. We promised to cover various and popular car brands. Given their number on our roads, let's take a closer look at what the Niva 2121 fuel consumption should be, depending on the type of engine, and also whether it can be reduced.

Fuel consumption on a Niva with an injector engine will be slightly less than on an analog "carburetor". One of the most popular power units (or rather, almost the only one) is a 1.7 liter engine. On the track, he takes relatively little, as for such a transport - only 9-10 liters. Despite the relatively small volume of the gas tank, it will last for long-distance country trips up to 400 kilometers.

If you use mainly 5th gear, then the consumption of "fuel" can be reduced to an even lower value - 8 liters. This is facilitated by an injection engine, which is more economical in comparison with a carburetor. However, the urban driving mode will be wasteful for the owner of the Niva, since here it is often possible to spend both 13 and 14 liters “per hundred”. And this is still in the warm season, because when driving it in winter, be prepared for an increase in consumption by another 2-3 liters. It’s all because of the frozen or slippery road surface, and, of course, the voracious power unit.

What can be said about Taiga's appetites

A variety of off-road vehicles under the tempting name "Taiga" enjoys particular preference among fishermen and hunters. Of course, fuel consumption will largely be related to driving style, time of year, engine modification. The five-door version will require up to 13 liters in city mode, up to 11 in mixed mode and 9.5 liters on highways.

In cases where the carburetor setting is correct, the reason for the increase in fuel consumption may be increased wear of the parts of the piston group.

How to save on fuel for the owner of the Niva

Now about how you can reduce fuel consumption on the VAZ 2121, including with the 21214 engine, since the recommendations are typical. Pay attention to the tips below:

  1. try to use various electrical equipment inside the car less often, for example, air conditioning, heated seats, lighting, music turned on, etc.;
  2. by changing your driving style and eliminating sudden acceleration, you will reduce instantaneous consumption. The optimal speed should be 80–90 km/h;
  3. it is desirable to move more on asphalt roads, since the car will always “eat” more off-road;
  4. run engine diagnostics to understand if there are any malfunctions that affect the actual fuel consumption.

Some Niva 4 x 4 owners also say that it is not uncommon for a consumption of 14 and even 15 liters per 100 km traveled. By the way, I will give a review of the real owner

Niva 4×4 is equipped with an injection engine. Due to this, gasoline consumption in this car is somewhat lower than in Niva models with carburetor engines. The latter, according to technical specifications, can consume up to 13.5 liters of gasoline per 100 km. Consumption on the injection engine, according to the technical documentation from the manufacturer, is only up to 9.1 liters of gasoline per 100 km. However, car owners assure that you should not rely heavily on these figures.

A large number of reviews indicate that often the consumption on a Niva 4 × 4 can reach 14 liters of gasoline per 100 km. And this despite the fact that the car does not have any serious malfunctions.

Gas consumption

In general, engine consumption indicators that are quite large for a passenger car have recently been pushing car owners to think about installing LPG equipment on the Niva.

The gas consumption indicators on the Niva 4 × 4 are ambiguous. There are no official numbers from the manufacturer on this matter, and car owners claim different numbers. Just like with gasoline, gas consumption can be really small. If there are any malfunctions or terrain features that affect gas consumption, then the fuel can leave very quickly. So, a consumption of about 14-15 liters in urban traffic per 100 km is considered normal.

At the same time, the consumption outside the city is approximately 11-12 liters. However, it happens that due to some kind of malfunction, the consumption rises sharply and amounts to 20 liters of gas per 100 km during suburban driving. The city uses even more fuel.

Thus, if the Niva 4 × 4 has too much consumption relative to the norms stated in the technical documentation, it is worthwhile to carry out a complete diagnosis of the car and identify the reason why the fuel drains so quickly.

What is fuel used for

Even if everything is normal in the car equipment, fuel can still be spent uneconomically. So, sometimes it takes only 60% of the combustible fuel to set the car in motion. The remaining 40% is quite realistic to save if you follow simple rules:

  • Do not start driving without first warming up the engine. Driving in these conditions can consume up to 12% more fuel;
  • do not turn on the air conditioner in the car at full power. If you drive with the air conditioner turned on, you can lose up to 15% of fuel;
  • If possible, close the windows when driving faster than 50 km/h. Such a ride can take an additional 4% of fuel;
  • Regularly check if your tire pressure is normal. Flat tires can cost you 4% fuel.

The VAZ-2123 engine, which is the basis of Chevrolet Niva cars, was designed back in the 90s. Since then, the ECM has been updated on this engine several times, and a gradual transition from Euro-2 standards to Euro-5 has been made. Oddly enough, with each update, the fuel consumption on the Chevrolet Niva increased. You can hear reviews that the 2005 engine consumes 10 liters per hundred, while for later versions the numbers go off scale for 14. Well, let's try to figure out the details.

If the transmission units did not consume energy themselves, an all-wheel drive car would be more economical than a mono-drive one. The necessary conditions are non-switchable all-wheel drive and the presence of lockable differentials. It seems that Niva Chevrolet has it all.

The result of one experiment

What will happen in reality? If the front cardan is removed from the structure, the fuel consumption will be 14.2 liters, and for the "regular version" the figures will be slightly worse - 14.8 liters per 100 km. All these figures were measured under the same conditions.

When it comes to significant weight and low tire pressure, practice really matches theory. For example, the Ural-375 all-terrain vehicle in the 6 × 6 version is more economical than with the 6 × 4 drive.

It can be concluded that the energy consumed by the Chevrolet Niva transmission exceeds the losses due to rolling friction in the tires. This is bad. However, for most light SUVs, everything looks exactly the same.

Fuel consumption Chevrolet Niva per 100 km according to the passport

Fuel consumption AI-95 with Euro-2 engine, l/100 km:

  • City - 10,8 ;
  • Highway, 5th gear (90 km/h) – 8,6 ;
  • Highway, 5th gear (120 km/h) – 11,6 .

Now let's study the figures specific to the Euro-5 internal combustion engine and valid from 10/1/2015:

  • City - 14,1 ;
  • Track - 8,8 .

Progress is bearing fruit. Engine power remains the same, and Chevrolet Niva's fuel consumption per 100 km is growing.

Too many accessories...

All figures are published by the manufacturer. Also here, by the way, air conditioning was not taken into account.

According to the reviews of the owners, the official data is very close to reality - the difference is no more than 5%. Some people managed to “burn” even 20 liters, but such cases must be dealt with separately.

How to reduce gasoline consumption?

It is unlikely to have a noticeable effect:

  • From the use of "chemistry" (additives);
  • From the installation of all kinds of "magnets", etc.;
  • Switching to "synthetics" (for example, 5W40) is a radical method, but not recommended;
  • From the transition to AI-92, the “liter consumption” increases slightly, the consumption in rubles decreases.

To improve efficiency, you need to properly tune the transmission. Usually they talk about balancing the gimbals, but be aware that imbalance can only appear as a result of deformation. No need to pay money for an almost useless procedure. However, let the owner make the final choice.

Balancing and correct installation of RK

With shaft balancing, everything is clear, but they usually do not think about other elements.

Transfer case and two shafts

Make sure to meet the requirements:

  • The transfer case (RC) is installed so that the gearbox shaft axis and the primary axis of the gearbox meet at a point coinciding with the center of the CV joint (see drawing). Also, the RC must be centered: each secondary shaft must be parallel to the bottom and be directed strictly along the body.
  • The crosses should turn easily, and, moreover, with the same effort!
  • Avoid play in the splines, crosses and bearings of the output shafts.

The tighter the crosspiece turns, the more the RC can deviate on its “pillows”. Hence the significant loss of energy.

The crosses are inside the anthers

Subtleties of diagnostics

By the spectrum of noise, you can find out what exactly is making noise. Let the rotation frequency be N. Then:

  • A sound with a frequency of 2N can only be emitted by one of the crosspieces;
  • Noise with a frequency N will be the secondary shaft of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Common problem

Often on the engine "2123" the knock sensor fails. When installing, it is “tightened” - the tightening torque should be 18 N * m.

Sensor replacement

You just need to take and replace the DD. Suitable options:

  • 21120-3855020-00, -01, -02, -03;
  • Fenox SD10100O7;
  • Bosch 0 261 231 046.

There will be two problems:

  • DD on the VAZ-2123 is available only from under the bottom (remove the bottom shields);
  • The ECM does not recognize the new sensor immediately, but after 20-30 km of “running in”. Like this.

We wish you success.
