Released back in 2003 and not reissued for a relatively long time, Mitsubishi Galant 9 is still quite in demand, especially for Russian buyers. Despite the headquarters in Japan and production in the USA, it was the Russian market that was one of the main consumers of Mitsubishi products, and you can still often find ninth generation cars on our roads.

The American version of Galant, which always came out with the base DE (as in the West they call big cars for the whole family), also had additional modifications: LS, ES and a sports GTS.

The main characteristics of all models are preserved, the difference is only minor cosmetic changes:

  • grade LS equipped with an electric drive to the chair, six airbags and full power accessories;
  • sports version of the GTS it has a more powerful engine and climate control, when, like the rest, they are content with only air conditioning;
  • ES has an improved design and different painting.

After restyling, the GTS package was replaced by the SE version with a modified shape of the rear optics.

But DE remains the main model, everything comes from its characteristics, and the demand for it is greatest.

Engines and gearbox

Mitsubishi have always been known for their iron, not the look of the car. In the ninth version of Galant, everything remains the same as before, the quality does not disappoint. All models have 4 cylinders in the engine, they differ only in volume:

  • on DE and ES there is a 2.4-liter aspirated, output - 150 liters. with.;
  • on LS and sports GTS - 3.8 liters, but the output is different - 230 liters. s and 260 l. with.

The 3.8-liter unit is especially good, but it is quite difficult to find it in Russia. Of the minuses, you have to check and tighten the valve clearances a couple of times a month, although they hold better than some competitors. The motor is good, but it is designed for a specific gearbox. The assault rifle does not give much freedom to maneuver. Although it will not work to get up tricks on it, it is an ideal option for an amateur or a family man. Galant grunder

A year after the Mitsubishi Galant 9 was released, in 2004, the same company produces the Galant Grunder.


Grunder is more focused on the domestic market, and in Russia it is not so popular because of the higher price.

But the price is definitely worked out - the design has been completely changed, sharpened for Japan, it is pleasant, it will not seem strange to the Russian eye:

Advantages and disadvantages

Design and appearance has never been the most important aspect of the Mitsubishi Galant 9. People have always bought cars for the sake of build quality and convenience. Looking ahead: the latest generation does not deviate from the canons of the entire line, but there are some differences.

  1. It is a well-built large car, with a voluminous body and a spacious interior.
  2. Heat problems are not felt in it due to the favorable location of the air conditioner that blows over the rear seats.
  3. In the driver's seat, everything is just as good - comfortable control, an electric seat.

The only drawback is a large number of buttons, which will have to be dealt with for some time, but for experienced drivers it will not be difficult.

Galant 9 feels great on the road. A heavy landing and an automatic will prevent the car from skidding, and if you are not a brand new Schumacher, this is the perfect choice. And you won't have to spend too much fuel on a long road - the consumption of gasoline is low due to the not very powerful engine.

It's easy to get used to the location of the buttons and their number, but getting used to the huge steering wheel is difficult. It is clearly not designed for a woman's hand, and even a man may find it uncomfortable. I tried the car on the highway on the route Dzerzhinsk - Volsk (Saratov region), 800 km one way. While the car is being driven in, the speed does not exceed 110 km / h. The suspension is very energy-intensive, the wheels are 215/60/16, which together smooths out roughness quite well. The speed is picking up energetically. To prevent slipping, you have to dose traction. Due to the power and traction at speed, it confidently pulls the car out. Rulitsya clearly, practically does not collapse. But in all driving modes, the considerable weight of the car is felt. It happened that due to poor visibility, the right wheels caught the side of the road, where the edge could start the car into a skid. And probably due to the weight of Galant, this did not happen.

As for skidding, the car is held by the wheels for a long time on a slippery surface. But if she already went, then she went ... I managed to disrupt the car into a deep skid, but this was done on purpose. In normal mode, everything happens predictably. There is of course a tendency to demolition.

Of the rare, but well-aimed problems, the following can be voiced: There were cases when the screws for fastening the valves of the variable geometry of the intake manifold were unauthorizedly unscrewed and, as a result, all these screws, getting into the cylinders, led the owners to the capital ... Similar cases were also on engines 6G74 (DOHC ) and apparently inherited.

    Galant of the last generation evokes rather contradictory emotions. The appearance of the car is unattractive, it loses even against the background of the "Koreans" of the lower class, which is especially noticeable against the background of its charming predecessor. However, the new Galant is a modern solid car that matches its style. Even the basic equipment is equipped with benefits that are not offered in the top versions of other brands, and this is worth a lot. This car is a smart choice for the down-to-earth business person.

    Once upon a time, in the late 1980s, the Mitsubishi Galant was one of the sportiest sedans in its class. It offered steerable rear wheels and a powerful turbocharged version, the VR4. Subsequent generations became more comfort-oriented, and interest in the model dropped noticeably. A brief revival took place in 1997 when the eighth Galante debuted with an attractive dynamic look. True, the car itself was not so interesting.

    The last Galante does not look as daring as before. It is built on the Mitsubishi PS platform - common with the Mitsubishi Endeavor and Eclipse.

    Another Japanese sedan has noticeably increased in size, which has a positive effect on the internal dimensions. The width of the cabin has increased to 145 cm, and the space between the backs of the first and second rows - up to 94 cm. True, there are isolated cases of loosening of the fastening screws of the flaps in the intake manifold and subsequent ingress into the cylinders.     Transmission

    The Mitsubishi Galant 9 engines were aggregated only with a 4-speed automatic (F4A4B), which, in combination with a V6, provided the possibility of manual gear selection. In 2008, the V6 was equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The machine is very reliable. The main thing is not to forget to renew the oil in the box every 60,000 km.
