It turns out there isn't just a Toyota Prius hybrid! When did the "hybrid" move into the "forty"?

Power steering leaks are practically not found, but on old cars the steering rack begins to tap, but more often the spline connection or the cross connection of the steering universal joint begins to knock. Failure of the steering position sensors also happens, but this becomes a problem only on rare versions of Camry with a hybrid power plant. They may have a steering failure due to an error in the ESP system.

Operation of the transmission

One of the rare modifications of the Toyota Camry XV40 was equipped with a manual transmission. As befits the most standard mechanics, it does not present any special surprises. Moreover, the E351 manual transmission has been tested by time and several generations of models from Toyota. The design of the box lacks all possible innovations in the form of two-mass flywheels, etc. Only a simple hydraulic release is used, but structurally it is separated from the release bearing and does not cause problems. At one time, it was installed on the Lexus RX330, but its strength was not enough for operation in tandem with powerful motors. However, when paired with a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine, it turned out to be extremely durable and hassle-free.

The only condition for long and cloudless use is to remember that the car is not a racing car and not try to use it in this role. But when purchasing a car in the secondary market, you should not rely on respect for the car and its components. Even a super-hardy box can be "killed" by young riders. Driving style and the lack of regular maintenance of the unit will lead to wear of the valve body solenoids, and in the case of a prolonged non-oil change, the box will start to overheat, which will lead to the geometry of the body. It is silly to list all the possible troubles from a racing style of driving. We can say that it will be easier to change the unit completely.

But any minor repairs will not cause difficulties. The U151E five-speed automatic transmission is well-established and used on crossovers and vans. Therefore, there will be no problems with new and used spare parts. But it happens that it is easier to buy a box from abroad, and sell your own for disassembly. But buying the same box, but used in tandem with a 3.3-liter engine, is not worth it. Structurally, they fit perfectly, but the wear of the unit will be stronger.

The six-speed U660E automatic transmissions were developed for more powerful engines and were used on the Camry with a 3.5 liter engine. Like any new product, the transmission had several "childhood" illnesses. But a later modification for the less powerful U760E units turned out to be more reliable. One of the main problems of modern automatic transmissions is the rapid wear of the torque converter lock-up linings. Already by 150,000 km of run, the box requires a lot of attention and constant monitoring of the oil and filter. Due to the large amount of "production", the channels of the valve body may become clogged, and the access of oil to the box will stop.

In theory, the resource of a six-speed gearbox is sufficient and can exceed 200,000 km without repair. But under the condition of careful operation of the car, which is in no way facilitated by the presence of a powerful liter engine. After all, a car with a powerful engine is taken precisely for fast and aggressive driving, which seriously affects the performance of the box. Failure of the stove, solenoids and other things is a classic set.

But there are problems with much greater consequences. They are not so frequent, and are more likely associated with improper use of the box, but still. With regular loads on a cold automatic transmission, there is a chance that the main bearing of the housing will start to beat and play due to the weakened fastening of the clamping bracket. At the same time, strong vibration can cause failure of many elements of the box and lead to complete unusability for repair. Due to vibration, they quickly break down and fail: planetary gear, clutch hub, differential, and in extreme cases, the gearbox housing.

But the restyled versions were equipped with already modified boxes, in which many problems were solved. However, it was not possible to completely avoid all the shortcomings, and the boxes sometimes give out "standard" faults. Moreover, if the car is operated in an aggressive style.

Basically, the only problem remained with the possible wear of the back cover. Which leads to breakage of C1-C2 packages. Which are responsible for switching from the first to the fourth stage. But the problem with the main bearing of the housing has been fixed and is now a thing of the past.

But the reliability of the engine is also due to its simplicity. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the valve clearances every 120 thousand kilometers. If we take restyled models, then on them, external body elements (bumpers and sills) and partially plastic in the cabin have undergone changes. Of the significant changes that differ from dorestyle:

  • xenon headlights for the Elegance + package (R4 - restyling);
  • multimedia system with display, starting from the Elegance (R3) trim levels;
  • keyless "smart" access - Smart Entry and starting the internal combustion engine - Push Start.

As you can see from the article, the Camry 40 is a decent car for pragmatic people. It does not require large financial investments, and a variety of trim levels will allow you to choose exactly the version of the car that will meet all the requirements for the comfort of a potential buyer.

Prices for the most basic model on the market (dorestyle) start at 650,000 rubles, for restyling you will have to pay about 800,000 rubles. Prices for the top-end LE (dorestyle) configurations start from 1 million and more. For restaling versions, prices are even higher - from 1.25 million rubles.
