The diesel is quite playful at the start, the consumption seems to be small, the interior is good, the xenon is convenient, the heating of the engine and the interior in winter is very convenient, the parking sensors work correctly, the leather interior is pleasant, the music is of high quality, the handling is good, the cross-country ability is relatively good, the spaciousness is excellent. But six months later, it went, it went. At first, the engine cooling fan block failed, the engine began to warm up, but it's a diesel engine, and it didn't reach overheating, but the warning lamp about overheating and the need to stop lit up several times, saving the Zhiguli experience with the stove.

“The Volvo XC90 has been a dream of mine,” says the owner of a 2010 Volvo XC70. - And finally, I matured both morally and financially to buy such a car, and in December 2015 I went to Russia. But after actually inspecting this car and comparing it to the XC70, I decided to stick with the latter. "

We present the owner's review of a 2010 Volvo XC70 with a 2.4-liter diesel engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission at the maximum level for the SUMMUM model. The car was bought in Moscow almost a year ago with a mileage of about 118,000 kilometers for $ 13,000, now the odometer is 134,000 kilometers.

- The purchase history of this car is similar to thousands of similar stories of other Belarusians - a suitcase, a railway station, Russia, a car dealership, a traffic police, insurance, Belarus ... - says the owner. - But, unlike many compatriots, I chose a car only among private ads and with the help of my friend - a good auto expert. I didn't want to mess with car dealerships in principle. I was lucky - in Moscow there was such a car that I needed. One owner for TCP, service book, work orders for work performed. The owner really followed the car. And the mileage is also small. Then there was a queue familiar to many for three days in advance at the MREO traffic police and the long-awaited way home. In order not to languish for three days in Moscow, waiting for their turn to take the car off the register, it was decided to carry out this operation in the small town of Demidov, Smolensk region, not far from the border with the Republic of Belarus. There, this operation took only an hour! On the way home, I tested many of the car's auxiliary functions, for example, adaptive cruise control makes long journeys very much easier. My joy knew no bounds!


Some hinged body elements were tinted, but the owner did not hide this. Even this did not stop me from buying, I was ready to close my eyes to it - I really wanted to become the owner of an all-wheel drive Volvo as soon as possible. In general, the bodies of fresh Volvo are very good. I examined a lot of cars before buying, but I did not see a single rusty or rotten one. As far as I know, the hood of this car is aluminum, the sills and arches are protected by plastic pads. There is nothing to be afraid of!


The XC70's ground clearance is also very high. By the way, in the XC90 it is only one centimeter more - 22 versus 21. It's not worth overpaying. In fact, because of the ground clearance, this car can be considered a car for every day - you can confidently drive on the highway and, if necessary, ride off-road. By the way, I confess, on the very first day after the purchase, I could not resist and still drove off the asphalt road into a ditch. I wanted to test all the capabilities of the machine as soon as possible. So then I was not disappointed - she confidently overcame all the holes on the road. By the way, it is impossible to "send" Volvo XC70 into a skid without turning off the auxiliary systems - it has repeatedly and unsuccessfully tried to do it.

The trunk is very large. The rear seats also fold out according to the 1 + 1 + 1 principle. With this transformation, the floor is flat.


There is also a very convenient grille between the luggage compartment and the passenger compartment in this configuration. It can also be rearranged between the front and rear rows of seats. Moreover, it is provided by default only in this configuration, in the rest it is installed optionally. Moreover, this pleasure is worth a lot - about $ 200. In addition, I also bought an original carpet in the trunk - 40 euros. This carpet can even fold - it's worth the money!

Due to the deep trunk, there is no full-size spare wheel, but there are many shelves, niches for small items and nets. It seems to me that with such a developed roadside service, as in Russia and Belarus, a big "spare wheel" is not needed - you can get to the tire fitting even at the "dock".

The interior space in this car is impressive too. I am tall, but I can sit in the back seat by myself without any problems. This is not possible in all machines. Sitting comfortably in both the front and back. Neither wife, nor children, nor other passengers have ever complained that they are cramped.

The materials of the interior are of the highest quality, the finishing is also excellent. Again, compared to my car, the XC90 feels stuck in the last century. The leather, as in many Volvo models, does not crack. But I treat it quite often with good chemistry. This is probably why there are still no cracks. By the way, there are even original Volvo frame blinds. I wonder what the traffic police will say when he sees them?

The complete set for this model is maximum. I even find it difficult to remember what is not in this car. Electric front seats, separate climate control, heated all seats. There is also a system for monitoring road lines, a system to prevent the driver from falling asleep and a bunch of other proprietary Volvo "tricks" that ensure maximum safety. Pay attention to the bottom row of buttons on the center console - there all the buttons have some function. There are no “empty” buttons, I have not seen such cars on the market. I like absolutely everything in this car!

2.4-liter engine with 205 hp. quite playful and very economical - on the highway the consumption is a little more than six liters per hundred kilometers, in the city up to nine. The capacity of the fuel tank is 70 liters, that is, the cruising range is at least 800 kilometers. In winter, there are no problems with starting the engine. Sometimes Webasto helps with the timer, but even without a heater, the car starts up easily even in severe frosts. Although once there was a case when the car did not start in the morning. It was right after buying the car. I turned on Webasto and started it the first time in ten minutes. I suppose that this was due to the poor quality of Russian diesel fuel, which remained after the road from Moscow.

There were no major repairs. I changed the front right wheel bearing once - this is a sore spot of these Volvo, it periodically fails. But it was on a run of more than 125 thousand kilometers, in principle, we will consider this repair as planned. I paid about 71 euros for the replacement. By the way, I serve at the partner car services of the Volvo fan club in Belarus. The guys there know these machines very well and make them relatively inexpensively.


So that you understand my attitude to the car, I will explain how I serve it. If the technology is supposed to change the power steering fluid together with the reservoir, then I do so. I am well versed in cars and understand what such "savings" can lead to in the future. By the way, for the replacement of the reservoir and the power steering fluid I paid only $ 50. The second point - when buying a car, I immediately planned funds for its full service. So, I gave over $ 600 just to replace all consumables in compliance with the technological process. All technical fluids, filters, belts and other elements were replaced immediately after the purchase of the car. It is necessary not to forget to do this in a timely manner, so as not to regret later about more expensive repairs, again because of a one-time "penny" saving.

To summarize - this car is for connoisseurs of comfort and safety. But for the sake of this, it is also necessary not to spare money for its maintenance - it, provided that all the work on the technology is performed, is not cheap. But believe me, when the car is well-groomed, you want to drive it somewhere. Just for the sake of not parting with her for a minute. I have never had such an understanding with any machine!

- Volvo XC70 2010 D5 AWD is one of the safest cars, - says the master of the workshop "Shate-M Plus" Denis Nikshtaitus... - 2.4-liter turbodiesel D5 series - 5-cylinder aluminum engine. The 3rd generation has been produced since 2009.

The turbocharged engine, piezoelectric fuel injectors and a new high-pressure fuel pump raised the injection pressure to 1800 bar, ceramic spark plugs allow the engine to start without warming up even in cold winter. The gas evacuation system was improved, the compression was reduced, the oil dipstick was removed, now a message will appear on the screen if there is a lack of oil. It is also important that fuel consumption and emissions of harmful substances have significantly decreased, the engine complies with Euro-5 standards, and is more efficient than the second generation of internal combustion engines. The turbines are reliable, on the first models there was a problem with EGR and a swirl flap - they eliminated it. Doesn't eat oil. The motor is able to cover more than half a million km without overhaul.

It is better to change oil and filters every 8-10 thousand km, rollers + belt + pump + generator pulley 60-80 thousand km, glow plugs 60 thousand km, after 100 thousand km the throttle valve may fail.

The automatic body leveling system can fail after a mileage of 150 thousand km, the front struts go about 180-200 thousand km. The entire XC70 suspension is durable and reliable. At the front, a MacPherson strut, simple and durable, at the back is a multi-link system, an aluminum rear subframe, in which all the bolts sour, and you will have to buy bolts to replace the silent blocks. In the front levers, you can change the silent blocks and the ball joint separately. There are more than 20 silent blocks in the rear suspension.

The 4th generation Haldex clutch is one of the most advanced all-wheel drive systems available in the world at the moment (by the way, the most powerful Bugatti Veyron also uses the Haldex clutch). The electronics proactively block the clutch in accordance with the road conditions.

The disadvantages of the system include the actual absence of a central differential, and, therefore, structurally, the rear wheels cannot have a higher rotational speed than the front ones.

The weak point is the Haldex coupling and the Haldex control unit, its case is aluminum, and it is in this place that it collapses and moisture gets inside the unit.

It is necessary to check the Haldex every 20,000 km.

Automatic transmission mainly on D5, AISIN company, 6 steps, oil change 50 thousand km, resource for about 200 thousand km, manual transmission, reliable transmission, oil change 50-60 thousand km. Hub bearings have a service life of up to 100-150 thousand km. There are problems with vibration in motion, CV joints are broken, there are few analogues, in the original - half-axles assembled.

A very moody electrician. Periodically, it is necessary to do a CD, floods the CEM block under the front wiper, the wiring of the engine compartment begins to scatter to huge mileage, it simply dries out from overheating and bursts.

The Volvo XC70 model belongs to a small subtype of off-road station wagons. These cars are aimed at ambitious and active drivers who need a vehicle that combines the behavior of a passenger car with the capabilities of SUVs.

In addition, the XC70 is distinguished by high passive safety, and this is confirmed by the employees of the company service and the owners of these cars. They recalled many cases when, in collisions with the XC70, other cars and people traveling in them suffered greatly, but the Swedes themselves got off with non-critical damage and saved the lives of those who were inside.

This model is richly "stuffed": leather trim is not uncommon, full power accessories (there is also a "memory" for three positions of the driver's seat), multifunction steering wheel, climate and cruise control, heated seats and outside mirrors, rain sensor, not to mention such "Little things" like central locking, airbag, immobilizer, ABS, etc. As a rule, this equipment works reliably.

All XC70s were powered by 5-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. In Ukraine, gasoline is more common. A 2.4 liter engine was installed on copies of the first years of production (V70 Cross Country), and 2.5 liters on cars since 2002 (XC70).

There are no serious complaints about the power units of this model. Turbines generally last the entire life of the motors. The operation of variable valve timing and ignition systems with individual coils (gasoline versions) does not cause any comments. Our fuel and diesel versions are perceived as normal. Although, if you refuel with low-quality diesel fuel and drive mainly in the city (at low speeds, with congestion), then the particulate filter becomes clogged. The malfunction is manifested by a deterioration in throttle response. In this case, you need to contact a company service station, where a special program for cleaning the particulate filter will be launched in the engine ECU. As a preventive measure, the minders advise to periodically go out on the track and thoroughly "give soot" at high speeds: the cleaning program is activated automatically. In addition, if you change the oil in diesel engines according to the regulations (20 thousand km), then over time (by 100 thousand km) rockers and hydraulic lifters become unusable. A malfunction is manifested by the increased noise of the engine. In order to avoid problems, minders advise to reduce the oil change period in such engines to 10 thousand km.

In 2.4 liter gasoline engines, air flow sensors and electronic throttle valves broke. A typical malfunction of all "gasoline" is the loss of tightness of the front camshaft oil seals.

The timing of all motors is driven by a belt, which is changed along with the rollers every 140 thousand km. At the same time, the belts and rollers of the attachment drive are being replaced.

In all engines, the radiator of the cooling system loses its tightness.

Do not overestimate ...

This off-road station wagon is comfortable and easy to ride both on and off the highway. Thanks to the high ground clearance (200 mm), all-wheel drive and the DSTC electronic system, capable of imitating the interwheel differential locks (it is available on most versions), the car is able to overcome snow obstacles, a sandy section of a country road or a beach, etc. However, you should not exaggerate its capabilities - he's not an SUV! He also does not have a downshift.

The all-wheel drive V70 Cross Country and XC70 are different, although both cars are front-wheel drive in standard modes. When the front wheels slip, the first ones are connected with the help of a viscous clutch, and the second with a more advanced electronically controlled Haldex clutch, the response speed of which is much higher.

In both cars, by 100 thousand km, problems with the front CV joint of the propeller shaft may arise. The weak point of the versions before 2006 is the connecting sleeve between the “hand-out” shafts and the gearbox. The viscous coupling is sensitive to the tires used (degree of wear, tread pattern): if the difference is large, this part may become unusable. Haldex is less finicky, although it has problems (see "Weaknesses").

Most vehicles are equipped with automatic gearboxes. For copies prior to 2005, the "automatic" can be a nuisance. As a rule, they occur in active drivers: failures of the hydraulic valve block are noted. There is a problem with the shock shifting. Since 2005, they began to install a new, more reliable automatic transmission.

Weaknesses of the car

Suspension "Swede" is moderately stiff and energy-intensive, which allows you to move confidently on uneven roads and on a country road. Structurally, it is similar to a relative of the Volvo S60: in front - McPherson, behind - "multi-link". The weak point is the front hydraulic silent blocks of the aluminum front levers (40-60 thousand km). In the last year of production, they were replaced with ordinary rubber ones, and they began to serve about 150 thousand km. The resource of the rubber mounts of the front struts, rear wheel bearings and rear silent blocks of the front levers is small (60-80 thousand km). But the ball joints of the front end, the struts of both stabilizers and the upper silent blocks of the rear fists of the "multi-link" will last about 150 thousand km. The rest of the rear suspension parts are nursed up to 200 thousand km.

Cars could be equipped with conventional shock absorbers, struts that maintain a given ground clearance regardless of the load, as well as "amorics" with a variable degree of rigidity (they are rare). The latter are worse than the others (up to 100 thousand km) and are expensive (1 piece - about 6 thousand UAH).

In steering until 2005, steering tips serve 30-40 thousand km. On some cars, the upper oil seal of the rail could have lost its tightness. In 2005, the rail was modified - it became more reliable, and the service life of the tips exceeded 150 thousand km.

The brake system with disc mechanisms of all wheels is powerful and effective, but by the time of 100 thousand km, the friction linings on the drum brake pads rust, which provokes wheel wedging, and by 200 thousand km the pressure springs of the front and rear caliper pads weaken (knock on irregularities) ...

Car owner - about Volvo XC70

I bought this Swedish car quite deliberately, because before that I managed to drive a Volvo 750. After that I had different cars, including a Mercedes G-Class "cube". Having sold it, I realized that at this stage I need a multifunctional car: fast, safe, comfortable, roomy and capable of confidently driving on different roads, as well as, where there are none, on country roads. As a result, my choice fell on the XC70. This is a really cool car - the equipment of the model is very rich, the interior and trunk are roomy. The turbocharged engine allows you to drive actively, the automatic transmission also works well, and the knocked down suspension makes it possible to ignore road defects and drive where there is no asphalt. All-wheel drive gives you confidence at high speeds, as well as on slippery and snow-covered roads. In nature, I put the XC70 in sand and mud a couple of times - after all, it is not an SUV after all. And much more depends on the "rubber" - I have it on the road. But most of all I want to praise the XC70 for its safety - I had several accidents on it and in fact became convinced of its strength. Once I caught up with "Slavuta" - so its trunk climbed into the interior, and my front bumper only cracked a little. The second time I drove under a Honda CRV - the bumper held out again, and only the hood was damaged - due to the fact that the "Japanese" has a "spare" in the back.

And Audi is also the most dynamic among the above competitors. In its arsenal - the most powerful power units. Although on used cars, it can create problems.

Subaru Legacy Outback is the most affordable. The advantages of this car are quite rich equipment, durable branded boxer power units and a permanent all-wheel drive with an interaxle clutch that locks when the wheels slip on one of the axles. The all-terrain arsenal is complemented by a limited-slip differential with a viscous coupling in the rear axle. Although, like the rest of the off-road wagons, the Legacy Outback should not be considered an SUV.

Volvo XC70 is almost a legend of the Volvo concern. A very popular car that combines a crossover and a station wagon. Why, he can overcome a lot, the main thing is that the car is in good working order, then you can go fishing or hunting on it. Of course, you shouldn't forget about rubber. After all, tires intended only for asphalt, with all their desire, will not be able to carry you along a soggy track. Strange, but these things are the last thing people think about, pinning all their hopes on four-wheel drive as a panacea.

It is no longer possible to buy a new car; instead, a new model has entered the market, the name of which is the V90 Cross Country. Therefore, if you really choose the XC70, then the last restyling, and these are cars from 2013 to 2016.

If you are thinking about purchasing this off-road station wagon (you can call it), then you need to know the pros and cons of the car, its advantages and disadvantages. So let's go.

I'll start with the cons, because they are usually more interesting than the positives. Or if you say to a person, "I have good and bad news, where do I start?" - he will certainly choose a bad start.

1. The most common Volvo engine is diesel. It has various modifications, and the main difference is in the amount of horsepower and torque. Otherwise, this is a 2.4-liter 5-cylinder engine. It is these units that have a sore with a generator belt. According to the regulations, its replacement should be done every 60,000 km. The thing is that when this belt breaks, or rather when it stratifies, the threads can get under the timing belt and the long-awaited meeting of valves and pistons will occur. The result is deplorable - a tow truck, service, spoiled mood and minus 400'000 rubles from the budget to replace the complete cylinder head. If you do it in an unofficial service, you will be able to save 30-50% of money, but the guarantee will be somewhat different.

How can you avoid this? It's simple: the belt should only be original, since it has a different cord weave and does not delaminate, but breaks and flies off. There is a chance of it falling under the timing belt, but it is negligible, unlike non-original belts. It is better to replace it earlier than after 60,000 km. 50,000 km is quite enough.

It is worth putting in the original boots recommended by Volvo. Everything is simple here - there are no analogues, so you have to put what is. If they are absent, dirt from the road can fall on the alternator belt, its slippage occurs, and then according to a well-known scenario. Also, to prevent the timing marks from shifting, there is a special protection that is installed in the standard holes. Such a small upgrade will help you to safely ride any distance and not be afraid of unforeseen situations.

Keep in mind that visual inspection will not 100% guarantee the belt is working properly.

2. The car is equipped with an all-wheel drive system, on fresh cars it is responsible for this Haldex 5th generation... This system works very quickly and, in principle, is the advantage of the car. But, there are also disadvantages to such a unit. The fifth generation began to work even more accurately, to process signals from many sensors even faster, and not to wait only for the front wheels to slip, as it was on the earliest versions of Haldex. But, wear products over time clog the pump mesh, as a result of which a large load is created in the form of an increased current and the pump stops its activity.

It is 100% unknown what it is - friction dust or a manufacturing defect of Haldex. Such pollution is manifested in cars of different concerns, on which this all-wheel drive system is installed.
The manufacturer does not regulate the change of oil in the clutch in any way, but to extend the life of the all-wheel drive, it is recommended to change the fluid every 30-40 thousand km.

As a rule, after 4-5 replacements, the mesh stops collecting so much "debris", which indirectly confirms the theory of a defect in the production of the pump.

3. Automatic transmission Aisin. Perhaps one of the most controversial units in the Volvo XC70, and in general for Volvo. Some praise him and call him "unkillable", while others scold him for whatever it is.

To begin with, it should be noted that despite the assurances of the manufacturer, which informs us that there is no need to change the oil in the automatic transmission under normal operating conditions, it is still necessary and desirable to do this every 60,000 km. The fact is that with frequent trips, if you can call it that, in traffic jams, with sudden starts and braking, the oil in the box can heat up to high temperatures, which will certainly lead to overheating. And if you leave this oil to work further, then the repair will not keep you waiting and will result in an amount of about 100'000 rubles. Agree, it's much cheaper to change it every 60 thousand km. replacement method, and if an aggressive driving style is often used, then partially change it every 20,000 km. 4 liters each. With such a change, it is necessary to control the color of the oil.

But the main "merit" of the TF-80SC box is that users are often faced with jolts and kicks. They can appear both when shifting gears on the go, and when the automatic transmission selector is shifted from N to D or from N to R.

In some cases, there is no cause for concern. You just need to visit an authorized dealer to install new software and perform adaptation. But when these methods do not help, then this is already a disaster for the family budget. Internal oil leaks in the gearbox cause it to malfunction. Leaks appear due to O-rings. New rings have been released by Aisin to eliminate the cause of the leak. This will require an analysis of the transmission and about 60,000 rubles. 4. Another drawback is squeaks in the car. Spending a huge amount of money on a purchase, the last thing you count on is “crickets”. Among other things, 5-cylinder diesel units have good power and a fairly large torque. The D5 engine has 215 hp. and a torque of 440 Nm., the D4 is endowed with 163 hp. and 420 Nm., later he had 181 hp. and still the same 420 Nm.

There is also an engine in the Drive-e line, D4 ​​with 181 hp. and 400 Nm of torque, but its difference from the above, in the volume and number of cylinders - 2 liters, 4 cylinders.
Despite their modest data, such motors have already exchanged more than one hundred thousand kilometers and are not going to stop there.

And the undoubted bonus of the engine on Volvo is its sound - pleasant and bass.

2. Paintwork. Say what you like, but it is difficult to find fault with the quality of the paintwork. If no repairs have taken place, then it is not possible to find a rusty element. Galvanized bodywork, high-quality paint and a thick layer of varnish - all this is an indisputable advantage of the Volvo XC70.

4. Automatic transmission and Haldex. Yes, these units are indicated in the disadvantages, but they are the same are also advantages.

Let's start with the automatic transmission. Such boxes are installed on many cars, and their main advantage is their origin. This is not a robot or a similar transmission, but a good old one, with all that it implies. But, I have already spoken about the leakage, but it is worth mentioning that with proper maintenance the box can overcome several hundred thousand kilometers.

To avoid overheating as much as possible, it is necessary to wash the radiator package once a year, or install an additional cooling radiator on the automatic transmission. If everything is clear with the first point, then the second one is suitable only for warm regions. In winter, at high negative temperatures, an additional radiator will only make things worse, which will affect the operation of the transmission.

Well, Haldex has no complaints about its direct responsibilities. As I already said, the “brains” of the Haldex read information not only from the slipping of the front wheels and only then the rear is connected, but information is also collected on the angle at which the wheels are turned, what the engine speed is, where the steering wheel turns, etc. All together, it provides a basis for enabling or disabling the PP. And if the system has already connected the rear axle, then even when the ESC is turned on, the four-wheel drive will remain, and in the early versions one could only dream of this.

5. Convenience and anti-theft. It's a station wagon, and even a premium one. It is due to its shape that the trunk is simply huge here and has almost 600 liters of roominess, and with the rear row unfolded it is 1000 liters more. Plenty of space in the cabin. With the transportation of someone or something, there will definitely not be any problems. The latter will not be even with the safety of the car.

The model is not interesting to the hijackers, it is quite difficult to sell for spare parts, since the most expensive parts are electronic components, tied to a car and registering someone else's unit in another car is a big problem.
