Caterpillar History

The founder of Caterpillar is Benjamin Holt, who designed a grain harvester in Stockton, California in 1886 and later founded the Holt Manufacturing Company to implement his ideas in metal. With the aim of promoting his equipment on the market in 1910, Holt files an application for registration of his own brand "Caterpillar", which is well known today.

1925 marked a turning point in Caterpillar history when the Holt Manufacturing Company and C.L. Best Tractor Co. merged. with the formation of Caterpillar Tractor Co. The main milestones in the history of the production of the first: the Best 60 bulldozer (1919), the Auto Patrol motor grader (1931), the Cat 769 dump truck (1962), the Cat 225 hydraulic excavator (1972), the Cat 416 backhoe loader (1985) ...

Throughout its existence, the companies were acquired in 1998. Varity Perkins (now Perkins Engines Company Limited) England, 2008 Shandong SEM Machinery Co., Ltd. China and a number of others.

As for Russia, Caterpillar s.a.r.l. supplied tractors for agriculture since 1913, and in the 1920s helped in the formation of the tractor industry of the former USSR. The Cat 60 tractor became the prototype for the serial tractors produced by the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant under the Stalinets 60 brand. In 1973 Caterpillar opened its branch in Moscow. It should be said that Caterpillar s.a.r.l. more than 70,000 people work around the world, the annual turnover is tens of billions of dollars. By the way, the Caterpillar trademark is used mainly as a corporate brand, and Cat exclusively for machinery.

The history of Caterpillar dates back to the late 19th century, when its founders Daniel Best and Benjamin Holt (each at that time had their own independent factories) experimented with the use of port tractors in agriculture (1890). At the turn of the century, they were engaged in the modernization of wheeled tractors in order to increase their maneuverability and cross-country ability.

Research by two engineers led to the development of a steam engine for tractors in 1905, which was used to lay the cable in San Francisco. This was the first time a Caterpillar machine had been used in a construction job. A year later, an earthquake hits San Francisco, and Caterpillar equipment was involved in eliminating the consequences.

The first success inspired the founders of the company, and they began to work on the release of new models of tractors. In the years 1908-1913, the models were improved with steel structures, three transmission speeds, an improved spring suspension system and the clutch of tractor parts.

In 1913, the fact of the delivery of Caterpillar tracked tractors to Russia was recorded for the first time (this was facilitated by the company's gold medal in plowing competitions, received by that time). During the First World War, Caterpillar supplies tracked tractors to Russia, England and France, and after the United States entered the war, to the American front.

In general, during this period, more than 5,000 tractors were produced for the United States and the union republics. In 1919, a new tractor was produced with 75 hp and front wheels in addition to the tracks. Such tractors began to be produced at the Obukhov plant in Petrograd.

Since 1921, tractors have been supplied to Europe for the construction of the Rhine-Main-Danube. Caterpillar was founded in 1925, when the two founders of the company united their production facilities under a common brand and name. In the USSR, Caterpillar continued to supply diesel engines in the 1920s and contributed to the development of the tractor industry.

In 1929, 2050 tracked vehicles were added to Soviet agriculture. In 1930, Caterpillar tractors were purchased by the Belgian authorities for the construction of the King Albert Canal. In 1931, similar tractors were seen at work on the construction of the Hoover Dam in the United States.

In the 1930s, construction was carried out in different parts of the world, and Caterpillar equipment was present almost everywhere; they also did not do without it when eliminating the consequences of natural disasters (this trend can be traced throughout the history of the company).

During the Second World War, Caterpillar was not left without orders. Moreover, it has managed to expand its product range by adding power units and graders to its existing gasoline and diesel tractors (this is how Caterpillar began producing construction vehicles).

The war ended and Caterpillar continued to grow and develop. For this she needed new sales markets. The first overseas office and the first step in this direction was made in 1950, when a subsidiary was opened in the UK. True, there were difficulties with the opening of this representative office due to high duties on imported products.

Caterpillar quickly found a way out of this situation, deciding to assemble equipment directly in England, and the first Caterpillar overseas plant was opened. In 1953, 93 new Caterpillar machines were purchased by the Government of India to develop the country's road network.

In 1955, under the US government order, Caterpillar manufactures equipment for the military operation Deep Freeze I, the code name for a number of environmental research missions, in particular, Antarctica, where the Caterpillar tractor was the only terrain scanner for the first decades.

In 1956, the Deep Freeze II and Deep Freeze III operations were developed, for which Caterpillar supplies additional equipment (a total of 143 machines were involved in these operations at various times). In the same 1956, part of the tracked vehicles of the American manufacturer was transferred to Australian Melbourne to begin preparations for the Olympic Games (since then, all the Olympic Games are being prepared using Caterpillar equipment).

In 1963, Caterpillar and the Japanese industrial company Mitsubishi form one of the first Japanese enterprises to be partly owned by the United States. In 1965, the enterprise became the second largest in Japan in the field of heavy industry production. For Caterpillar, this was a solid step towards conquering the Asian market.

In 1969, Caterpillar supplied engines for the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. In 1973, a representative office of the American company Caterpillar was opened in Moscow. The global recession in the late 1970s proved to be tough for Caterpillar.

1982 was the worst year in the history of the company, sales fell 30%, and losses by the end of the year amounted to $ 180 million. The crisis period also affected the company's social policy. Some workers were laid off, salaries fell by 10%, investments decreased by 36%. It was possible to normalize the work only by 1987.

Then the lineup increased by 150 units, but at the same time the headquarters of employees was reduced by 40%, which is an undoubted blow for the global manufacturer. The experience of the crisis period helped in 1990 to form 3 pillars on which business rests: budgeting, decentralization and rejection of massive layoffs.

In 1997, the American giant Caterpillar merged with Perkins Engines, and the acquisition of the German company Mak Haforen allowed Caterpillar to become a leader in the diesel engine market.

In 1998, Caterpillar manufactures a huge 797 truck (there were no analogues in the world), which was tested at the proving ground in Arizona.

One year later, Caterpillar begins supplying the global market for compact construction equipment, which was presented at CONEXPO worldwide in response to changing customer needs.

In the 21st century, Caterpillar has continued to pursue a successful manufacturing strategy. After the terrorist attack in 2001, within a few hours, Caterpillar dealers united to jointly supply equipment to the scene.

In 2003, Caterpillar became the world's first to supply clean diesel engines, the full size of which was introduced later in 2004.

Caterpillar is today a global manufacturer of mining and construction equipment, industrial gas turbines, diesel engines and natural gas engines. A huge number of factories (50 in the USA and 60 in 25 countries of the world) produce and supply more than 300 items of equipment, which are rightfully recognized as the benchmark for the entire engineering industry.

For over 80 years, Caterpillar has been pursuing technological advances, delivering lasting, positive change on every continent.

Gadget manufacturers

Caterpillar Inc. is an American corporation that designs, develops, manufactures and markets machinery through its network of dealers around the world. It is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, locomotives, engines and industrial turbines. Workwear and boots (CAT / Caterpillar) are also produced under this brand. With more than $ 89 billion in assets, the firm is # 1 in its industry.

Cat phone is produced under this trademark - Caterpillar Inc. mobile devices that simultaneously work as smartphones and on a regular telephone line. The first such device, the Cat B25, was announced and released in 2013.

History of Caterpillar Inc. began in the 20s of the last century. The future huge corporation appeared as a result of the merger of two other firms. In 1986 it was reorganized and received its current name. The headquarters of the organization is located in Peoria, Illinois, USA.

One of the founding fathers of the company was Benjamin Holt, an American inventor who patented and manufactured a tracked tractor for the first time. He was born back in 1849 in New Hampshire, USA. Benjamin was the youngest of his four brothers and also of eleven half-siblings.

The head of the family was the owner of a sawmill, which supplied hardwood for the construction of wagons. The brother of the future inventor founded his own American company, which initially produced wooden wheels for carriages, and then steel tram wheels.

In 1869, Benjamin went to work at his father's sawmill, where he helped load hardwood onto a ship sailing from New Hampshire to San Francisco.

At the age of 23, his "entrepreneurial streak" woke up, and the young man began to supply lumber to the west coast. A few years later, his mother died, and later his father. After the death of his parents, the young man moved to California.

Subsequent events developed at a rapid pace. After Benjamin's move, the Holton brothers founded a business that prepares timber for use in the arid California valleys and deserts. They opened their new business in warm Stockton, where the climate was good for drying wooden wheels.

The brothers invested $ 65 thousand in the construction of the plant and equipped it with the best equipment they could get. Stockton was located at a distance of 140 kilometers from San Francisco, and therefore had access to the sea and river coast. Soon, a staff of 25 people was constantly working for the brothers.

Benjamin enjoyed the credibility of his family, who considered him a genius entrepreneur. I must say that he never lost his craving for inventions. For the purpose of the experiment, he built the first steam engine, nicknamed "Old Betsy". Oil, wood or coal could be used as fuel.

The engine weighed 22 thousand kilograms and rode on huge metal wheels. The year Benjamin built the steam tractor, he became president of his own company. The harvester became another brainchild of the talented entrepreneur.

However, his main invention - the first workable tracked tractor - was successfully demonstrated by him in the fall of 1904. To create such a tractor, Benjamin had to use all the metallurgical resources that were available to him.

The very first tractors of the 1890s and early 1900s were very heavy; sometimes they weighed up to 450 kilograms, which often caused them to sink into the soft soil of the San Joaquin Valley farmland in Stockton. Benjamin Holt tried to solve this problem by increasing the size of the wheels in width and height.

Such a tractor seemed to be more complicated and expensive to maintain. Then he considered another option - to build a temporary boardwalk in front of the steam tractor. This idea also fell away quickly, as it would have taken a long time and interfered with excavation work, and in general it would have been costly. After that, Holt thought about wrapping the wheels with planks.

This is how a set of wooden paths, attached to chains, appeared. The new machine was successfully tested by him on wet soil, which he plowed right on Thanksgiving Day.

In 1910, Benjamin opened a factory in East Peoria, Illinois, run by his nephew. Another plant appeared in the Midwest. Despite the fact that it took a lot of capital to re-equip it, the venture turned out to be very profitable.

Within 2 years the company employed more than 600 people; the export of tractors to three foreign countries, including Canada, was also established. Holt's tracked vehicles played a supporting role in World War I. When it broke out, the British War Office ordered a Holt tractor.

The tests were so successful that it was this technique that was chosen by the cannon tractor. The use of Holt vehicles influenced the development of the British tank, and tactics in the field of hostilities underwent changes. In other words, this technique turned out to be "one of the most important military vehicles of all time."

When the war ended, the heavy-duty tractors, so suitable for the old needs, were unsuitable for the farmers. This led to the fact that the future Caterpillar company sharply worsened its position. Benjamin had to cut prices for new equipment; the old stocks of military tractors were also not sold.

The company struggled with the transition to peacetime, which contributed to the nationwide depression. In 1920, Benjamin died suddenly after an illness that lasted only a month.

The following years were marked by constant financial difficulties. Benjamin's place was taken by a candidate proposed by banks, to which the company had a large debt. In the spring of 1925, a merger with a financially stronger organization took place. This is how Caterpillar was born.

The product lines of the companies were merged. The company now produced five tracked tractors.

Sales in the first year were $ 13 million. By 1929, they had grown to $ 52.8 million. The company's growth continued throughout the Great Depression of the 1930s.

During World War II, the products began to be actively used by the construction battalions of the US Navy, which built airfields and other facilities in the Pacific theater of operations. Caterpillar continued to grow rapidly during the post-war construction boom.

She launched her first enterprise abroad in the early 1950s. Thus began the transformation of the firm into a multinational corporation.

Caterpillar has built its first Russian plant in the city of Tosno, located near St. Petersburg. It was completed in 16 months. The plant has needed the first electrical substation in the Leningrad Oblast since the communist government dissolved in 1991.

The facility was built in harsh winter conditions with temperatures as low as -25 ° C. Construction was managed by Lemmink & Group from Helsinki, Finland. Caterpillar also expanded production in Brazil in the 1960s.

The range of modern products of the corporation is truly impressive. The company produces about 400 products for purchase through a dealer network. Among them: excavators, agricultural and tracked tractors, loaders, trucks and locomotives. Caterpillar equipment is actively used in construction, transportation, industry, energy, forestry.

The company is the world's largest manufacturer of medium and large wheel loaders, which are manufactured in factories around the world.

The corporation is also involved in the defense industry. The related subsidiary produces diesel engines and automatic transmissions, as well as other parts (for armored bridges, battle tanks, military engineering vehicles and tank transporters).

The headquarters are located in the UK. The company has been criticized repeatedly for supplying bulldozers to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In particular, in 2003 the IDF Caterpillar D9 was involved in the incident, when the American activist Rachel Corrie, who opposed the war in Iraq and the Israeli presence, was killed by a bulldozer.

Lawsuits against the company were filed by her family and the family of Palestinians who also died that day. However, the court dismissed the claims and ruled that the deaths were the result of an accident.

Caterpillar also has a business unit dedicated to the construction and mining electronics business. The subsidiary has been operating since 2002 and is based in Ohio.

Caterpillar mobile phones are manufactured in factories in China. Their distinguishing feature: design and protection, comparable to the company's construction equipment. Of course, the corporation does not specialize in consumer products, but Cat phone devices fill this niche perfectly. The idea itself looks great: the corporation's construction equipment is large and reliable, and its rugged phones boast similar properties.

For several years the Caterpillar company has been trying to enter the market of the CIS countries with its "unkillable" mobile devices, and it still succeeded.

The price of such devices is quite high, and therefore not everyone can afford them. In addition to phones and smartphones, the company produces a variety of accessories, including cases, screen protectors, chargers, holders and mounts.

Doug Oberhelman, a well-known American businessman, is the chairman and CEO, and at the same time the key figure of the corporation. He was born in 1953 in Illinois. Doug's father worked as a merchant in the John Deere dealer network. The boy grew up surrounded by machines and from childhood dreamed of working for Caterpillar.

In 1975, the young man graduated from Millikin University with a bachelor's degree. Immediately thereafter, he became part of the Caterpillar family. Initially, Oberhelman got the position of credit analyst in the Treasury department. The first part of his career will be spent in finance. During this time, Doug gets the opportunity to work all over the world, thanks to which he travels a lot.

He spends three years in Uruguay, a year in South Florida and four years in Japan. Twenty years after his first day at the company, Doug will take over as vice president and later as chief financial officer. In 2010, he becomes the most important figure at Caterpillar.

Six other company presidents are accountable to him. Oberhelman manages a social services division and several businesses with sustainable capabilities. In addition, he oversees the machinery industry marketing and sales for the North American Sales Department.

Not too much is known about the personal life of the head of the company. However, his wife Diana is a public figure as she is the chairman of Cullinan Properties Ltd. - a real estate company offering commercial brokerage, asset management, construction, investment services, market and financial analysis.

In 2011, Oberhelman received a salary of $ 16.9 million, which is 60% higher than his earnings in the previous year. Doug himself says that his large family makes him very happy. The couple are raising four children.

The main concept of the company is its stability. At the same time, a lot of attention is paid to preserving the environment. Oberhelman says that this position is quite natural, because it is fundamental to the success and prosperity of the corporation.

Providing reliable and efficient energy solutions, constant development of infrastructure, concern for quality are the key tasks of modern society, according to the head of Caterpillar. Dealers and customers of the company have been guided by them for many decades.

The Cat® brand is deservedly synonymous with quality in all industrial sectors that require powerful, specialized machinery. The multinational corporation Caterpillar supplies its equipment all over the world. Founded inXIXcentury in the United States, the company is now active in 50 countries. Its representative office is not only just in Antarctica, but on other continents the machine-building giant has divisions, the number of which is gradually approaching 500.

Company success story

The trademark was registered in California in 1910, but the history of the Caterpillar brand began much earlier. In 1886, Benjamin Holt developed a combine harvester on his own, and four years later created a steam tractor. The first successes resulted in the founding of the Holt Manufacturing Company in 1902. The next stage is the design of crawler bulldozers. A prototype with a gasoline engine was tested in 1906.

In 1909, a family business, and then a famous brand, arose on the production base of an existing plant in Illinois. However, Caterpillar owes further success not only to B. Holt, but also to K.L. Best. The young man began to work at the age of 13, joining his father's business in 1891. In 1910, an enterprising young man founded C.L. Best Gas Traction Co. The new company specialized in the production of crawler bulldozers.

In the future, the manufacturer expanded the product line. In 1921, tracked tractors under the Best brand appeared on the American market. And in 1925, two promising companies merged into Caterpillar Tractor Co. In the same year, a line of tractors of five models was presented. Two years later, a new development entered the market - the Model Twenty crawler bulldozer. Since 1928, the company has grown.

After the purchase of Russell Grader Manufacturing Company, the expansion of the lineup was rapid. In 1931, Cat® construction equipment was redesigned. Instead of gray, the cars were painted yellow and black. The demand for equipment has skyrocketed. The proprietary technology was used at critical facilities. By the next decade, productive machines were working on the construction of highways, bridges, dams.

By the middle of the 20th century, the company entered the international market. In 1950, a subsidiary was opened in the UK. Special equipment was involved in the construction of dams in India, Pakistan, the expansion of the Panama Canal and even the organization of the Apollo 11 mission. In 1967, Caterpillar International Office was established in Illinois. This period saw a lot of new developments. Since the foundation of the brand, the range of products has grown significantly:

  • tracked tractors;
  • bulldozer equipment;
  • motor graders;
  • wheelbase tractors;
  • self-propelled scrapers;
  • front loaders;
  • off-road dump trucks;
  • hydraulic excavators;
  • attachments (working) equipment;
  • generator sets.

By the early 70s, sales of construction equipment outside the United States outstripped domestic demand. In the new decade, the company continued to grow steadily, opening its own repair facility in Iowa. In 1979, the manufacturer returned to improving the corporate identity, officially introducing a fresh shade of yellow on branded products. The color "Hi-Way Yellow" was replaced by the exclusive "Caterpillar Yellow".

The next decade began with the purchase of Solar Turbines. Significant new additions are the company's first backhoe loader and the addition of the tracked bulldozer range. In 1983, special equipment was actively used in Argentina and Paraguay for the construction of a dam, in 1985 - during the construction of a dam in Turkey. Competition on the world stage was intensifying, but Caterpillar was not going to give up its leadership position.

In the 90s, the American manufacturer supplied equipment to China and Japan for the construction of large facilities. By the end of the decade, another unique development appeared - a heavy-duty truck with a tipper body. At the same time, a new line of compact construction equipment was launched. 1998 also saw the purchase of Varity Perkins in Great Britain, which was later renamed Perkins Engines Company Limited.

In 2000, an enterprise for the production of Cat equipment in Russia was opened in the city of Tosno, Leningrad Region. The beginning of the new millennium was also marked by the market launch of ACERT® technology. Development of advanced solutions continued. The electric crawler dozer is a significant breakthrough in 2008. Special equipment is successfully used in the fields of Canada and South Korea, where the largest dam is being built in the Yellow Sea.

New Caterpillar acquisitions - Progress Rail Services and Shandong SEM Machinery Co. In 2010-2011, it was necessary to join the Electro-Motive Diesel corporation, Bucyrus International, MWM GmbH. Since 2012, a customer service center has been operating in Illinois. The production base is growing, technology is improving, the dealer network is developing, and the demand for efficient special purpose vehicles is steadily increasing.

Cat equipment in the Russian market

The first shipment of American equipment to Russia took place in 1913, when Caterpillar won a plowing competition. Tracked tractors from the United States entered the country during the First World War. In 1919, the manufacturer introduced a new model. Tractor 75 hp was equipped with tracks and front wheels. It served as a model for the further production of analogs by the Obukhov plant.

The Soviet Union owes much to Caterpillar for the intensive development of the tractor industry during the formation of the new government. In 1929, a large batch of special equipment arrived in Russia from the United States for the needs of agriculture. In the agricultural sector, 2050 American tractors have started to work. Productive tracked vehicles significantly contributed to the rise of the national economy after the formation of the USSR.

Business relations between Russia and Caterpillar did not end completely even during the Cold War. The modern policy of import substitution does not hinder the development of cooperation either. Since the beginning of the millennium, an enterprise has officially been operating in the Russian Federation that produces Cat equipment for domestic business. Caterpillar history

The predecessor of Caterpillar was the Stockton Wheel Company, which was founded by the Holt brothers back in 1883 in California. The enterprise specialized in the production of agricultural machinery. It was this company that began producing combine harvesters back in 1886. And in 1904, the company developed and launched its first profitable tracked tractor. It was offered under the name Caterpillar, which translates from English as "caterpillar".

The company developed dynamically: in 1908, the production of tractors with gasoline engines was launched and the company for the manufacture of combines by Daniel Best was purchased. The following year, the production base was expanded with another plant located in Illinois. Even before the outbreak of the First World War, American Caterpillar tractors were actively exported to Mexico, Canada and Argentina, and supplies to France, Great Britain and Russia were soon established.

During the First World War, the company reoriented itself to fulfill military orders. And in 1925, a merger took place with one of the basic competitors - C.L. Best Gas Tractor. The result of this merger was the Caterpillar Tractor Company. In the early 1930s. the release of equipment with diesel engines was launched. At the same time, the headquarters and main production facilities of the enterprise were moved to the state of Illinois.

During World War II, Caterpillar was one of the top 50 large companies in terms of military orders. In peacetime, the history of the company's development continued, and already in 1950 the first subsidiary abroad was opened in Great Britain. 10 years later, a Cat® plant was opened in Brazil and in 1963 in Japan.

In 1985, a large-scale modernization of Caterpillar plants began, which lasted until 1993 and cost the corporation $ 1.8 billion. In 1986 the company changed its name to Caterpillar Inc. In 2000, a plant of this manufacturer was opened in Russia, and the corporation also acquired enterprises in Australia, Italy, India, and Great Britain.

Currently, Caterpillar continues to expand its production bases, improve the range of equipment, expand the network of authorized dealers, which allows it to remain one of the leaders in the production of special equipment in the world.
