Do not rush headlong to a hundred, where they will first disassemble the box, and then they will find out the cause of the noise, everything can be much simpler. Check the presence of oil in the gearbox, its level, and it may just be time to change it.
For VAZ 2109, the gearbox oil is changed every five years, which, in terms of mileage, is about 70-75 thousand kilometers. The drain plug for the VAZ 2109 is located at the bottom of the box, as shown by the arrows in the photo.
The oil in the gearbox remains unchanged for quite a long time.

At the moment, modern special gear oils have been specially developed for gearboxes of VAZ vehicles, for example: TM-4a, TM-4, "REXOL T" having a viscosity of 80W-85 (corresponding to GL-4), "Omskoyl trans P" having a viscosity of 80W-85 (corresponds to GL-4/5), "Volnez TM4" having a viscosity of 80W-90 (corresponds to GL-4), as well as a wide variety of imported brands of similar quality.

To change the oil with your own hands, it is important to know:
- The procedure does not require special skills or special tools from you.
- Changing the oil in the gearbox to the VAZ 2109 is carried out when it has not cooled down.
- That is, it is recommended to replace after the trip.
- The probe (pointer) is located under the hood (if we look at the front of the car) at the bottom right, located at the checkpoint.
- The optimum level is the top mark on the dipstick.
- Do not fill above the upper mark, it will overflow from the box.
- The lower mark shows the minimum acceptable level.
- If the level drops below the bottom mark, your box will fail very quickly. To avoid this, check the level every 10 thousand kilometers.
This is how the oil is changed in the gearbox VAZ 2109:
- We perform work on a lift or a viewing ditch.
- We preheat the box by driving at least 10 kilometers in your car.
- First, remove the rubber cap, rinse it and clean the breather hole with a wire.
- Then install the cap in its place.
- We unscrew the gearbox oil drain plug, first we substitute an oil container under the box.
- Drain it and screw the oil drain plug back in place.
- Remove the oil level dipstick.
- Pour new through the dipstick hole.
- We wipe the dipstick with a rag and install it in place.
- Once again we take out the dipstick and check the oil level in the gearbox using it.
- If necessary, add oil to the box to the upper mark.
