Using the lever, the driver gives the necessary commands to the manual gearbox. On rear-wheel drive vehicles (VAZ 2101-2107), a manual gearbox (MT) is installed directly under the lever, so there is no need for a backstage. After all, the gear shift mechanism directly connects the lever and the rods of the forks of the corresponding gears.

For front-wheel drive vehicles (VAZ 2108-2112) it is installed next to the engine, across the body. Therefore, to transfer commands from the lever to the gear shifting mechanism, it is carried out using a backstage made of steel pipe. Because of this, the technology for removing, replacing and repairing the shift lever is different.

How to remove the gear lever on the VAZ 2107

First of all, move the lever to the neutral position, then lift the upper protective cover that covers the manual transmission. To remove the lever, you only need a narrow flat screwdriver. Press the lever and use a screwdriver to pull the latch out of the lever. Then remove it from the tip of the gear selector mechanism. Then, using a steel wire hook, pull the plastic sleeve out of the lever cavity.

If you do not have sufficient experience and do not know how to disassemble and assemble a Zhiguli manual transmission, then disassembling the gear selector is not recommended. There are many small parts that can fall inside the box, resulting in a major repair.

How to remove the gear lever on the VAZ 2110

To remove the lever, you only need a set of open-end wrenches, as well as a Phillips and slotted screwdriver. Remove the protective cover and lift it up to secure it to the lever handle. If possible, unscrew the lever handle and remove the cover completely. Using the key on “13”, unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the lever to the link (it goes inside the tunnel). Then, using the “10” wrench, unscrew the nuts securing the plastic guide plate (it is screwed to the tunnel wall). Remove the guide plate, then insert a Phillips screwdriver between the top and bottom of the tunnel to the right of the lever and remove the screw that secures the plastic guide to the lever. Then press the lever in the neutral position all the way to the right and pull out the bolt and guide. Remove the retaining ring from the ball joint cup and pull out the lever. Do not pull it with the ring in place, as this may destroy the bowl.

Lever malfunctions

If the lever vibrates strongly while driving the VAZ 2107, most likely the problem is the heavy wear of the plastic sleeve that connects the lever and the gear selector, so it must be replaced. Repair kits for the VAZ 2107 gearbox lever can be bought at most car dealerships. When choosing a repair kit or bushing, give preference to AvtoVAZ parts, because they are of better quality.

Vibration of the VAZ 2110 lever, as well as fuzzy gear shifting and large free play, occur due to poor fastening of the bowl to the car body, wear of the plastic parts of the bowl, weak tightening of the fastening nut to the link, or severe wear of the fastening sleeve to the link. After replacing the bushing and properly tightening the nut, tightening the bowl mounting bolts (or replacing it), the vibration of the lever disappears.
