Synthetic

The most expensive, high performance gear oils. They provide reliable, long-term operation of the box. But it is not advisable to purchase them for the VAZ 2109, since such oil is more suitable for expensive imported cars or more modern domestic cars

Semi-synthetic

The best choice for VAZ 2109 and cheap foreign cars. Such oil keeps the gears of the gearbox working, prolongs their service life. With a high level of quality, semi-synthetics have an attractive cost for owners of the nine. Change every 75 thousand kilometers

mineral

The cheapest gear oils, which are best avoided even for the VAZ 2109. To a certain extent, they perform their functions, but they cannot be recommended. If there is no alternative solution, it can be used as a temporary replacement for synthetics or semi-synthetics.

The main criterion for choosing gearbox oil is the class. Since the VAZ 2109 is a front-wheel drive vehicle, it is recommended that lubricants of GL3 or GL4 classes be poured into the gearbox. Imported oils have such designations, while foreign oils have TM3 and TM4, respectively. At the same time, it is not recommended to use TM5 / GL5 lubricants, since they wear out the gearbox synchronizers.

We have determined which oil is best to fill in the nine gearbox, now we will determine how much lubricant is in the gearbox of the VAZ 2109 model.

In many ways, the amount of oil to be filled in depends on whether you are replacing it completely or partially. The volume of lubricant in the gearbox is approximately 3 liters. Between partial and complete replacement, we advise you to make a choice in favor of a complete one.

When pouring lubricant into the gearbox, be guided by the dipstick. The optimal filling of the transmission crankcase is a mark between the minimum and maximum level on the dipstick.

Replacement features

Now we proceed directly to the procedure for replacing transmission oil. The task is not difficult, but it is not worth taking it lightly either.

  • Always have a dry rag ready to wipe the dipstick when removing it from the boat;
  • Before checking the lubrication level, warm up the car, shift 1-2 gears;
  • It is necessary to check the lubricant level before and after replacement;
  • If your VAZ 2109 is not equipped with a dipstick, be guided by the lower edge of the oil filler hole. The liquid should reach this edge, but not be above or below this mark.

For a gearbox, underfilling lubrication is just as bad as overfilling. Always try to find a middle ground so that the gearbox can work as efficiently, long and reliably as possible.

Probe. Is there or not?

VAZ 2109 cars were produced from 1987 to 2011. During this time, certain adjustments were made to the design of the car, including gearboxes.

Therefore, now nines are found both with and without a probe. Because of this, the procedure for changing the lubricant in the gearbox may differ slightly.

Earlier versions of the VAZ 2109 did not have a dipstick, but received a filler hole closed with a stopper. To get to it, you have to crawl under the car. Later versions of the VAZ 2109 received a dipstick and a filler hole located on top. To fill in the grease, you just need to lift the hood.

Replacement steps

The entire process of changing the lubricant in the gearbox can be divided into three main stages:

  • Checking the level of lubrication;
  • Draining old oil;
  • Filling the new lubricant into the box.

Let's go through each stage separately.

Level check

Checking the current oil level in the gearbox is not difficult, regardless of whether you have a dipstick or not.

If the probe is missing, we will check with a finger. This is done as follows:

  • Unscrew the filler plug from the gearbox under the car;
  • If after that the liquid began to flow out, the level is sufficient. If not, insert your finger into the hole. Feeling the liquid at the level of the edge of the filler hole, we can talk about the optimal amount of lubricant;
  • You can clearly drain all the grease and determine how much fluid was in the system by its quantity in the container.

With a probe, everything is simple:

  • Unscrew the plug on which the measuring probe is fixed;
  • Wipe it off with a dry cloth;
  • Insert back into the box. In this case, the machine must be on a flat surface and at rest;
  • Take out the dipstick and see what the meter shows. It has Min and Max marks. It is optimal if the oil has colored the dipstick up to the maximum mark, but not higher than it.

In order for the new lubricant in the gearbox to work effectively, the first step is to get rid of the old one. The gear oil drains quite easily.

Drain

To drain the lubricant from the gearbox, you need:

  1. Remove the rubber plug from the breather, clean the breather with wire and close it with a stopper. This will equalize the pressure inside the gearbox.
  2. Unscrew the drain plug. In old and updated versions of the VAZ 2109, this plug is located in the same way - at the bottom of the box.
  3. Drain the oil into a container prepared in advance with a volume of about 5 liters.
  4. After draining all the grease, screw the drain plug back in securely.

On a warm engine, fluid from the gearbox will drain faster and more efficiently. But at the same time, follow the safety measures. Yet you are working with hot oil.

Replacement

Now we have reached the point where you need to fill in new grease. Which one, we have already determined.

  • Unscrew the filler plug located below;
  • Using a syringe, gradually fill the gearbox housing with fresh oil;
  • Top up until the liquid is at the level of the edge of the filler hole;
  • Close the cork.

An important difference is the gearboxes on the VAZ 2109 with 5 speeds. They require about 300-350 milliliters more grease to be poured. Otherwise, when operating in 5th gear mode, the gearbox will experience oil starvation.

To add the required additional amount of lubricant to the five-speed gearbox, do the following.

  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle using a jack. This way, additional grease will not spill out.
  2. While the machine is raised, add the required amount of oil.
  3. Close the plug and only then return the car to a horizontal position.

Replacement via dipstick

Many rightly believe that it is most convenient to change the oil in the box through the dipstick. The instruction for this case is as follows.

  • Raise the hood;
  • Unscrew the plug with a built-in probe;
  • Pour liquid into the hole through a funnel or using a syringe;
  • As you fill, check with a probe to what level you already share;
  • When you get oil at the MAX mark, you do not need to add more lubricant;
  • Screw the dipstick into place.

Whether to flush the gearbox or not before replacing it is up to you. Focus on the current condition of the old drained grease. Periodic flushing will not be superfluous.
