The Mazda CX 7 crossover, which was discontinued in 2012, can be compared to a bright star. It flared up in the sky in 2006, but, unfortunately, quickly faded away.

To date, the prices for cars of this model in the secondary market are more than democratic, and this despite the fact that, according to statistics, every third car sold in Russia is a crossover.

This situation is incomprehensible to many motorists. So what is the reason for the cheapness of the Mazda CX-7 and why are the prices for this model so low?

Out of production, but not forgotten

It is very curious that the Mazda CX-7 is one of the few models of the Japanese automobile concern that does not have a direct heir.

It is reliably known that the serial production of the Mazda CX-7 was discontinued due to technical obsolescence, and its inability to compete with the more advanced, both in terms of design and in terms of technical characteristics - Mazda CX 5.

It is worth noting that the mid-size crossover discussed in this article was quite controversial from the very beginning. As conceived by development engineers, it was created with an orientation towards the US market, where cars of this class are especially popular. The chassis of the car was unprepared for pits and bumps. As a result, the owners of the CX-7 were forced to repair the front suspension quite often, since its support struts became unusable on average every 40 thousand kilometers.

Ball joints cannot boast of durability either, for which 60 thousand km is a critical figure. The most annoying thing is that they have to be changed along with perfectly serviceable silent blocks and front levers, which costs a pretty penny to the owners of the crossover.

From a technical point of view, the engine turned out to be far from perfect. With a mileage of 30-40 thousand km, replacement of the turbine is a common occurrence.

The first sign that it is time to change the turbine is thick white smoke from the muffler.

This service, both at specialized and dealer service stations, is quite expensive, which cannot but affect the cost of Mazda CX-7 in the secondary market.

"Weaknesses" of the Mazda CX 7

The list of disadvantages of this model is not limited to the small resource of the turbine. Among the obvious "blunders" of developers explaining why the car is so cheap, several items can also be attributed.

  1. Quite impressive fuel consumption. According to the manufacturer, the petrol version with a 2.3-liter engine and a capacity of 238 horsepower consumes about 15 liters of fuel in the urban cycle, and a little more than 9 on the highway. The owners of this crossover have a completely different opinion on this matter. They practically unanimously declare that the real numbers are much higher: 17-19 liters per 100 km of run in the city and 10-12 on the highway. As for the off-road, this indicator even reaches the mark of 20 liters per 100 km.
  2. Small service life of the lambda probe (front oxygen sensor), the failure of which may be evidenced by the "jitter" of the car during acceleration. The most interesting thing is that the cause of a breakdown can be the most common topping up of brake fluid when replacing pads, because oxygen sensors are extremely sensitive to the additives contained in fuels and lubricants.
  3. Brake disc drift. The "weak point" of pre-styling Mazda CX-7 cars are brake discs, which absolutely cannot boast of resistance to temperature extremes. Getting into snow or a puddle, even after a little braking, is sometimes enough to warp them. It is worth noting that by the last years of production, the manufacturer solved this problem by changing the material for the brake pads and discs, and installing new casings.
  4. Unsuccessful decisions of engineers regarding the engine and automatic transmission - therefore, you need to constantly monitor them. If you stop monitoring these units, then from time to time one malfunction will cause further avalanche, more and more expensive to eliminate.
  5. Poor insulation.

Although the history of the model is not so long, it still has several modifications. Moreover, the designers even managed to carry out one planned restyling, which completely renewed the generation of the crossover. As a result, we can name five versions of the CX-7, which have cardinal differences among themselves.

The basic version of the SUV is considered to be a car with a 2.2-liter CDi AWD unit. It develops power up to 173 hp. This is the only diesel from the range of motors. The transmission is exclusively automatic. In general, the same transmission is offered for most modifications. The design and "stuffing" of this version was quite acceptable, although not luxurious.

Further, two separate modifications can be distinguished, equipped with turbocharged gasoline units. Their capacities are 238 and 260 hp, volumes - 2.3 liters. Front-wheel drive. The gearbox has already been mentioned. With such engines, the car turned into a dynamic crossover. Turbines do wonders on the track.

There is also an all-wheel drive modification with the already familiar turbocharged gasoline engine of 2.3 liters and 260 hp. In fact, the difference lies only in the platform.

In 2010, after restyling, the developers added another modification. It was created especially for lovers of a comfortable ride. A six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive and a midsize 163bhp 2.5-liter engine ensure unrivaled handling and agility.

The SUV Mazda CX-7 has many classmates who are similar not only in performance, body shape, but also in the same price category. Of the cars that win the CX-7 in value, one can single out the Citroen C4 Aircross, Mitsubishi ASX, Mini Kountimen, Nissan Zhuk, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Yeti. Of course, in terms of technical characteristics, the Japanese crossover surpasses almost all of the listed models, but you can't argue with the price. For some motorists, it is she who plays a decisive role when choosing a vehicle.

In some ways, the CX-7's classmates are the Ford Kuga, Jeep Compass, Mitsubishi Outlander, Opel Antara, Peugeot 4008, Subaru XB and Volkswagen Tiguan. Do not forget about the new brother of the same brand, namely the Mazda CX-5. Just because of its appearance, the mid-size SUV had to cease to exist. The listed models are considered classmates of cx-7 only on indirect grounds. Appearance

CX-7 looks amazing from the outside. It is even a little offensive that the management of the concern decided not to produce the car further. At first glance, it may seem that you are in front of a massive hatchback, but after a moment this impression dissipates. With such dimensions, the model can only be a crossover, and also not particularly compact.

The front of the car is characterized by a classic body kit, a small radiator grille, which is emphasized by an aerodynamic lip and a massive air duct. Overall lighting equipment is represented by narrow domes. They contain headlights. As an option, standard luminaires are replaced by xenon or LEDs. For foglights, the developers took large and deep wells located on the sides of the air intake. Mazda's signature "checkmark" flaunts at the very center of this action. The hood is smooth, devoid of any stiffening ribs and stampings. In general, the car body is generally well streamlined.

Inspection of the car from the side makes it clear how overwhelmed the front roof pillars are. The transition between the hood and windshield is not noticeable at all. The roof is also slightly inflated. As a result, counter air flows pass unhindered along the body. In length, the car is quite large, so there are three windows on the side. The imposing wheel arches protrude menacingly on the sides. They contain huge discs that give the model respectability. The doorways have only one stamping next to the bottom edge. The rear-view mirrors are supplemented with LED strips.

The feed of the Mazda CX-7 is even more than classic. Most likely, the designers simply did not want to bother about this. The roof ends with a miniature spoiler, huge lampshades of the overall lighting equipment slightly step onto the plane of the sidewalls, license plates are placed in special recesses. The rear bumper is much larger than the front one. Immediately underneath is a sheet of hard plastic needed to protect the exhaust system. In principle, the appearance of the crossover is recognizable and attractive.

Interior trim

Inside the cx-7, everything was done under the guidance of specialists from the ergonomics department. As a result, even small parts are in the most suitable places for them. The gearbox does not interfere with control during driving. The three-spoke steering wheel is easy to handle. If desired, it can be adjusted in several directions. Finishing materials in the initial and progressive trim levels are different. Of course, the luxurious leather interior with metal and chrome accents looks more interesting.

The driver's and passenger's seats are quite comfortable. The sculpted backrests, headrests and slotted side bolsters ensure a comfortable fit for anyone. Heating, ventilation, electric drive are available as options. The wide assortment of all kinds of accessories is also pleasing. There are cup holders on the central tunnel. Three people are comfortably located on the sofa of the second row, however, the one sitting in the center will still experience some discomfort.

Trunk volume ranges from 455 to 1348 liters. The second digit is achieved by the second row seat layouts.

Technological component

Everything that a driver may need for comfortable driving is available in the CX-7, though within reasonable limits. The center console contains compact audio system units with outputs for disks and USB, an air conditioner, cruise control, a navigator, a color-type multimedia system screen.

On the dashboard, several radii are illuminated by LEDs. The safety package includes basic electronic systems, all kinds of driver assistants such as parking assist and hill start assist. Do not forget about the pillows in the cabin and belts. The rear-view camera displays the picture from the stern on the on-board computer screen.

All modifications of the Japanese crossover are offered with independent suspension, presented in front by MacPherson struts, and at the rear by a multi-link beam. The drive is either front-wheel drive or full. Ventilated disc brakes both front and rear.

In the domestic market, the SUV is available with one of four units. Three of them are gasoline and one is diesel. Capacities are 163, 173, 238 and 260 hp. Volumes - 2.2-2.5 liters. All motors have four cylinders. As a gearbox, there are mainly 6 automatic transmissions, although versions with a similar manual transmission can be found. The maximum speed of the most powerful engine does not exceed 211 km / h. It takes 8.2 seconds to reach a hundred cars with it. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle for gasoline units is at the level of 10.5 liters, for a diesel engine - 7.5 liters.

Within 4 years after the release, the car did not change, and a little later a number of structural changes were made during the restyling. But it did not become sufficiently popular, it was overtaken in sales by another compact crossover of the company - CX5, which appeared later. Therefore, the company decided to remove this model from production.

Mazda CX 7 was discontinued in 2012.

Although now it is not produced, this is not a reason not to consider this crossover in more detail, nevertheless, it was the first from Mazda.

Main characteristics

Exterior

To create CX 7, the designers have designed a completely new platform. At the same time, for a quick solution of design problems, many of the nodes from the crossover were borrowed from other Mazda models.

Externally, the designers tried to combine the sporty character inherent in all Mazda models with the universal performance of an SUV.

This attempt was successful - neat, with smooth body lines and practically without a strong transition from the front of the car to the windshield - CX 7 has sporty notes in its design... A smooth transition is made from the roof to the stern of the crossover.

The front is rounded to the maximum. At the transition from bumper to hood, there is a radiator grill. At the same time, it is not significant in size and is covered with a coarse-mesh stylistic mesh. At some distance from the grille, diamond-shaped headlights were placed on the sides, the corners of which were also rounded.

The main place on the bumper is taken by a fairly large air intake, decorated at the top with a chrome strip. The intake itself is covered with the same mesh as the grill. Three-section stylized niches were installed on the sides. Fog lights are located in the upper section, and the other two sections are reserved for additional air intakes. The bottom of the bumper is decorated with a small skirt with a protective strip.

The side parts of the car are notable only for the wide chrome edging of the side glazing, a small transition step in the lower part, and overlays to protect the sills.

The back is pretty interesting. There is a smooth transition from the roof to the almost vertical position of the tailgate bottom. The rear window top is decorated with a symbolic spoiler.

The bumper protrudes somewhat, but its corners are rather rounded. An interesting solution was the placement of brake light repeaters. They were installed on a protective strip below the bumper, at the level of the exhaust pipes.

Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, the CX 7 is quite a standard mid-size crossover. They are as follows:

  • length 4700 mm;
  • width 1870 mm;
  • height 1645 mm;
  • wheelbase 2750 mm;
  • clearance 205 mm;
  • curb weight 1600 kg;
  • trunk 455 l;
  • tank 62 l.


Interior

The salon now looks somewhat outdated, but also unusual. The dashboard is presented in the form of three large wells. The central and left ones are reserved for analog sensors, and the right one is for the on-board computer. Moreover, its display is monochrome.

The center console body was set at a slight angle. At the top of it, under the visor, two small displays were placed. One is navigation, it is colored, the other is for displaying information on the operation of the audio system and climate system, it is monochrome.

Three deflectors were installed under the displays. Next comes a whole scattering of keys that control the climate and audio system. Only the gearshift lever and the parking brake lever are located on the central tunnel.

Specifications

The CX 7 crossover went on sale with several types of power units and transmissions. The technical characteristics of the power plants are different, the first in the range of power plants for the CX7 was a 2.2-liter turbodiesel with a power rating of 173 hp. The box with it was 6-speed, mechanical, and the drive was on both axles.

The most common was the 2.3-liter diesel unit. In a car that came with an automatic 6-speed gearbox, this unit developed 238 hp. Also, CX 7 came with a motor of the same volume, but with "mechanics", also 6-speed, but this motor was already producing 260 hp.

There was also a gasoline unit in the din. In terms of volume, it was the largest - 2.5 liters, but its power was only 163 hp, since it was atmospheric. Also with this motor there was a 5-band automatic machine, and the drive was front.

With a sporty appearance, Mazda's crossover did not have that character. Its speed and dynamic performance was mediocre.

So, the engine volume The 2.2 TD automatic accelerated to 100 km / h in 11.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 200 km / h and an average fuel consumption of 7.5 liters. Another engine - 2.3 TD - with a manual gearbox it accelerated to the first "hundred" in 8.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 211 km / h and consuming an average of 10.4 liters of fuel. The same engine, but with an “automatic”, accelerated in 8.3 seconds, its maximum possible speed is 181 km / h, and its average fuel consumption is 11.5 liters. And finally, the gasoline engine with automatic transmission accelerates in 10.3 seconds, its maximum speed is 173 km / h, and its fuel consumption is 9.4 liters.


Configuration and price

Mazda CX7 came to dealers in several trim levels. They meant different technical equipment, but there was also a set of equipment, which was basic and all cars were equipped with it. This kit included:

  • systems (ABS, TCS, EBD);
  • Cruise control;
  • steering wheel with leather trim and multifunction;
  • heated and adjustable seats (front);
  • audio system;
  • Rain sensor;
  • package of airbags.

The CX 7 crossover, although it had several power plants and transmissions, came to us only with a certain filling and trim levels.

So, we only had modifications with a 2.3 liter diesel engine and automatic transmission, as well as with a gasoline installation. There were two complete sets for them: "Sport" and "Touring".

The diesel crossover was sold at a price of 1,334 - 1,479 thousand rubles. Gasoline was cheaper - 1,184 thousand rubles.

Although the car is not produced, its owners continue to operate it. And they note that the CX 7 has excellent handling, fairly responsive motors, and a good flow rate.

To the disadvantages of CX 7, they include insufficient equipment of the car with equipment, such as an electric trunk drive, the lack of additional lighting in some places. They also note that the crossover is poorly prepared in terms of sound insulation.
