The base xDrive20i (184 hp) and the xDrive28i (245 hp) since mid-2012 are 2-liter inline turbo fours N20B20 with varying degrees of boost. By the way, we advise fans of chip tuning to look through the catalogs and make sure that these motors differ not only in firmware, but also in the piston group. Therefore, it is not recommended to force 184-horsepower to 245-horsepower by replacing the motor control program.
- As is often the case, thin drive chains fail. First of all, the oil pump chain. The second is the timing chain. You need to start monitoring the tension already from 60-70 thousand, and by 100, replacement is recommended for a good half of the engines. Do not expect extraneous noises - you may not even hear them, and you do not need to write again about the consequences of oil starvation after stopping the oil pump or, even more so, after a violation of the valve timing.
- Also, pay attention to the oil filter housing (the so-called "glass") - until 2014 it was plastic and leaked. It is recommended to replace it with an aluminum one, together with a heat exchanger. At the same time, evaluate the leaks of antifreeze - the pump tends to leak, and it is not cheap, 500-600 euros.
- xDrive28i up to 2012 with an "unprofitable" power of 258 hp are naturally aspirated inline-sixes 3.0 N52B30. As already mentioned, these are the best engines for the X3 - the oil burnout problem on the later N52s has been resolved. You can count on a service life of 200-250 +, especially if you change the oil every 10 thousand, pour good synthetics with a wide viscosity range and put a colder thermostat to lower the operating temperature.
- The top 306-horsepower xDrive35i are 3.0 N55B30 supercharged sixes. There are noticeably less often weaker ones, and there is less information on them. There are no complaints about the timing drive, but the oil burner is already encountered quite often. Moreover, the reason is not always the coking of the piston rings - sometimes the fault is simply a clogged crankcase ventilation, which gets dirty here very intensively. And there are also problems with the fuel system. Here, direct injection, and the high pressure fuel pump often falls short of 120 thousand. Therefore, cold start and diagnostics with measuring the pressure in the system are a must.
- Diesel xDrive20d (184 hp) until mid-2014 are 2-liter N47D20. The motors are not very good. The main problem of motors until 2011 is the timing drive with a resource that fluctuates on average from 50 to 80 thousand km. There are two chains, and replacing them together with guides and tensioners requires removing the engine. The replacement budget is around 1000-1200 euros. Fortunately, most of the cars fell under the recall campaign or the chains were changed by the owners themselves after the end of the warranty. And after replacement, they last much longer - the unit was finalized.
- Piezo injectors N47 at a price of 300-350 euros per piece have a hard-to-predict resource: they may not live up to 100 thousand, or they can reach 200. Against this background, the loosened intake manifold flaps with variable geometry, which have every chance of falling into the cylinders, look a trifle.
- And a few more minor problems with N47: cracking rubber damper of the crankshaft pulley (resource fluctuates around 100 thousand) and plus or minus the same resource of glow plugs, which fail one by one, but it is better to change all at once.
- After 2014, the base xDrive20d diesel engines (190 hp) were replaced by new motors of the modular series, B47D20. The motors are fresh, and so far they have only managed to note problems with the EGR valve (AGR), which is expressed in a sudden loss of power during acceleration and / or dergotne at low speeds. Check for valve errors. Dealers changed it under warranty, but not the fact that the previous owner had a problem, and he applied for a replacement.
- Powerful diesels xDrive30d (258 hp) and xDrive35d (313 hp) - different variations of the same 3.0 N57D30 six. This is a good engine, especially against the backdrop of the N47. Up to 200 thousand, subject to regular oil changes and cleaning the EGR valve, you can leave without any repairs at all. Further there are already "options are possible". After the anniversary mark, the timing chain is gradually stretched, the resource of the injection pump, injectors (they are also piezoelectric here, and very expensive) and turbines are suitable.
- General recommendations for engines boil down to the fact that the oil change interval should be reduced to at least 10, and preferably up to 7 thousand, you need to use a grease with a wide range of viscosity - no 0W20, better 5W50-5W60. It also makes sense to replace the native thermostat, designed for an increased operating temperature, with a "colder" one, the procedure has been mastered by good BMW services. And there is no need to look back at the official regulations of the manufacturer - their task is to bring the car in good condition until the end of the warranty period, the further fate is not of interest.
- As for chip tuning, it was said at the very beginning: you do not need to take forced motors, and if you decide to do the modifications yourself, use only expensive proven solutions, and take into account the mechanical differences in motors of different degrees of forcing.

Reconciliation of contradictions is the basis for the creation of new cars. Consumers want each succeeding generation to be more spacious, safer and richer in equipment. At the same time, the manufacturer must take care of reducing weight and fuel consumption, while maintaining a reputation and profitability.

Bmw x The second generation 3 is a typical mid-size SUV. Its length is 465 cm, and the wheelbase is 281 cm. It is somewhere between the BMW 5th and 3rd series.

The BMW X 3 Series F 25, which debuted in 2010, is a clear example of the combination of difficult compromises. In comparison with the previous generation BMW X3 of the E83 series (2003-2010), the crossover has increased by 7 cm, and the wheelbase has grown by only 1 cm.

The main innovation is the transfer of production in the United States to the BMW plant in South Carolina. The predecessor was going to Austria. It may seem to some that this does not matter. Recently, more and more often, owners have to deal with premature wear of the oil pump drive. The only symptom is extraneous noise (howl) during the increase in speed. The defect leads to accelerated wear of the turbocharger, increased oil consumption and, in extreme cases, to engine seizure. The naturally aspirated 6-cylinder 3-liter engine (258 or 306 hp) is completely devoid of serious drawbacks. But there are very few such modifications, and the transport tax is unlikely to please anyone.

The share of ads with diesel versions of the F25 reaches 60 percent. That's a lot. Among diesels, versions with a 2-liter turbodiesel with a return of 184 hp prevail. For your information: in Europe, the weakest diesel modification developed 143 hp. and had a drive only to the rear axle.

The main enemy of a diesel engine is too long an oil change interval, which loses its viscosity much earlier. This has a particularly negative effect on the condition of the timing chain, as many European users have become convinced of. There, the recommended oil change interval is an unimaginable 30,000 km. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the chain is located on the side of the box, which significantly increases the cost of repairs.

Frequent short-distance travel (eg in the city) may cause problems with the particulate filter. He simply does not have time to complete the self-cleaning process. If too frequent unsuccessful starts of the DPF self-regeneration filter, excess fuel is formed, which gets into the engine oil. Its lubricating properties are lost, which leads to wear of the turbocharger, the engine itself and the timing chain. An alarming sign is an increase in oil level between changes.

The 3-liter turbodiesel of the N57 series, for the same reasons, is not tolerant of frequent short journeys. The timing drive is also located here on the side of the box. Fortunately, chain problems are much less common than in 2.0d. Among the disadvantages: the low resource of the belt pulley of the ancillary units and the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation system).

Transmission

Unlike other BMW models, the X3 F25 has a slightly different transfer case design for the xDrive all-wheel drive system. Instead of gears, a chain is used here. According to experts, such a solution is more reliable, and any problems are associated only with neglecting oil changes. All-wheel drive system malfunctions will be indicated by jerks (jerks) when driving with completely turned-out wheels. Mechanics recommend changing the oil as often as possible - every 40-60 thousand km. Subject to regular oil changes (every 60-80 thousand km), there are no complaints for a long time about the operation of the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

Not everything goes smoothly again

The trade-offs mentioned at the outset are likely to have led to an excessive reduction in production costs. BMW X3 owners often complain about various malfunctions. For example, for many, after several tens of thousands of kilometers, the steering rack begins to knock. The ZF unit is a real wreck. According to the spare parts catalog, it has been modernized several times already, but complaints about knocking appear again and again, regardless of the model year of the car. Some were lucky enough to install the third rail.

Like most modern cars, the X3 does not tolerate long periods of inactivity. The battery drains quickly, which can lead to startup difficulties and electronics errors. Fortunately, the suspension does not pose major problems - repairing it is quite expensive.

The above is confirmed by the mechanics of the BMW dealership, who say that the main problems of the X3 F25 are malfunctions of the steering rack and oil pumps of the 2-liter gasoline engines of the N20 series (245 hp). Everything else is rare, and little things about electrics, as a rule, are caused by dirty contacts.

Conclusion

In the aftermarket, the start of a sharp decline in prices for the second generation BMW X3 has already begun. Some proposals have even broken down the psychologically important mark of 1,000,000 rubles. So is the X3 F25 worth your attention? Is it really the optimal family car - roomy, great steering and superbly equipped? Probably not, unless you are an ardent BMW fan and you are willing to bear the costs. The level of reliability is significantly lower than the model of the first generation, and the cost of a possible repair will cause a heart attack. All BMW engines are characterized by a high thermal load. In order not to bring them to overheating, which turns into serious consequences, it is important. They are usually washed every two years. The operation involves a partial disassembly of the front part of the body, but is priced at reasonable prices.

On cars older than three years, the board of LED lights installed on the trunk lid corrodes. Cars in "pre-reform" and restyled versions are subject to this. Prevention, alas, does not exist, the burned-out lantern will have to be replaced as an assembly.

Front suspension elements have a long service life. Shock absorbers run least of all - they usually have to be changed after 100,000 km. It is desirable - together with thrust bearings, so as not to climb into the suspension again in the near future.

The only weak link in the X3's rear suspension is the floating bushings in the upper wishbones. This is a feature of almost all BMW models. Usually silent blocks break after 80,000 km. The beginning of their destruction will be heralded by a creak when passing irregularities.

After 100,000 km, knocks may appear. Unfortunately, this assembly is very difficult to repair. Many specialized service stations do not even accept it for work. The steering gear has a built-in electric motor, so the new unit is very expensive. The rest of the steering elements (rods and tips) go for a long time. They are changed mainly due to damage - for example, in case of accidents.

An absurd mistake in the design of the transfer case is the breather, which is a simple tube, without a valve or at least a boot. During operation, moisture enters the unit unhindered. This is especially pronounced in the winter, when, after driving, the distributor cools down and draws in humid outside air through the breather. What can we say about overcoming deep puddles.

The abundance of moisture inside the unit leads to rapid and severe corrosion of its elements. Typically, by 50,000 km, this causes vibration and jerkiness in the transmission. On modifications with more powerful engines, this is manifested at the beginning of the movement, with weaker engines - at speeds of 60–80 km / h. If you contact the service in time, the distribution box can be saved. It is disassembled, washed and bearings are usually changed. Otherwise, corrosion will completely destroy an expensive unit.

Alas, they have not yet come up with a way to modernize the distributor breather. Traditional methods that work on serious SUVs are not suitable for the X3. Small consolation is that the rest of the xDrive all-wheel drive transmissions are faithful.

Modern BMWs have an electronic service warning system. It takes into account the duration and operating conditions and displays a message on the instrument panel with a list of required operations - changing the engine oil, air or cabin filters, brake fluid, spark plugs, brake pads.

Conveniently, only in Russian conditions the electronic meter does not work adequately. This mainly refers to the engine oil change interval. According to the computer, it is 20,000-25,000 km. In reality, even the interval of 15,000 km is often too long, especially when the vehicle is used in a metropolis. Therefore, in order not to kill the high-loaded BMW engines ahead of time, you should connect your head - it should be at least once every 10,000 km.

In the current difficult economic situation, they are in great demand. Owners of premium segment cars, including BMW, do not disdain them either. Fortunately, servicemen have already accumulated solid experience in using replacement parts. For example, Lemförder parts are good value for money. Gasoline four-cylinder turbo 2.0 series N20 has two versions: 184 and 245 hp. At the same time, the engines are absolutely the same in iron, even the turbines are identical. The only difference is in the software. This is used by fans of chip tuning.

Diseases of N20 motors, despite different degrees of forcing, are the same. After about 70,000 km of run, engines often come into service with serious scuffs on the camshaft journals and their beds. In some cases, repairing the cylinder head is no longer possible. Oil starvation leads to this defect, which occurs for various reasons.

All BMW engines have a good oil appetite, which is why owners often "miss" the benchmark. In addition, the oil sometimes loses its working properties due to unjustifiably extended drain intervals for the next maintenance. Camshafts and their beds can die due to failure of the chain that drives the oil pump. Just at about 70,000 km of run, it may break off due to increased load. The fact is that the oil pump is integrated into a single unit with a block of balancing shafts that reduce vibrations during engine operation.

An open circuit in the oil pump is usually accompanied by a short extraneous sound that is difficult to catch. And not all drivers immediately pay attention to the low oil pressure that appears. As a result, the motor receives such damage that it is no longer advisable to restore it.

Short-lived on N20 motors and timing chain. Usually it is changed after 100,000 km due to excessive elongation. But the variable valve timing clutches (Vanos) on these engines serve for quite a long time.

The variable valve timing system (Valvetronic), which replaces the usual throttle valve on many BMW gasoline engines, has been modernized. Its previous generations were capricious, but in the third generation, in particular on the N20 engines, the problems disappeared.

Engineers have also improved the crankcase ventilation unit. Now it is changed much less frequently than on older gasoline engines.

All modern BMW gasoline engines are deprived of the usual oil dipstick, the level is monitored by an electronic sensor. On previous cars, this "assistant" often began to lie after running 100,000 km, exposing the owners for serious engine repairs. A modified version of the sensor is installed on the N20 engine, and only isolated cases of malfunction have been recorded in seven years.

As soon as you feel that the engine has become louder, it works intermittently at idle and dulls during acceleration, drive the car to an official or specialized service, where they probably know about this problem. Since on warranty crossovers, both chains with dampers and sprockets were changed for free. But if a malfunction is found on a used X3, the second owner will have to pay at least 80,000 rubles. A turbocharger does not live long - sometimes only 60,000-80,000 km. And it costs 100,000 rubles from dealers. - not counting the replacement work. To extend the life of the turbine, do not turn off the engine immediately after stopping - let the bearings cool, and also change the oil more often and clean the radiators from dirt at least once every two years.

The inline 258-strong "six" N52 is simpler in design and more reliable. But her turbo version of 306 hp. quite capricious and expensive to operate. True, used X3s with such engines are extremely rare in our country.

The risk group for all gasoline engines is a water pump (12,500 rubles) and a fuel pump (22,000 rubles), an exhaust gas recirculation valve, oxygen sensors (5600-11,000 rubles) and mass air flow (9500 rubles). In addition, you need to constantly monitor the performance of the candles. The fact is that misfiring can lead to breakdown of catalytic converters, the price of which is about 55,000 rubles.

But diesels are reliable. Just remember, the guarantee of their longevity is high-quality fuel and oil. Therefore, the X3 resource depends on the choice of the correct refueling and regular service. However, there have been cases when the turbine of a 2-liter engine broke down during normal maintenance. A new one costs from 90,000 rubles, not counting the replacement work. However, some craftsmen restore a turbocharger for an order of magnitude less money. The rest of the motors, especially the "six", are devoid of congenital defects. If you give them conditioned "diesel fuel", it is possible only after 150,000 km of run that the glow plugs (6,500 rubles each), injection nozzles and the fuel pump (from 38,000 rubles) will need to be replaced.

CHECK THE DISTRIBUTION

With all engines, except for the base 184-horsepower, for which a 6-speed "mechanics" is offered, an 8-band automatic transmission was combined. Used X3 on the "handle" are very rare - the bulk of our cars are equipped with an "automatic". Nothing bad can be said about him. Let one-time breakdowns happen, but dealers on warranty machines repaired or even changed the automatic transmission for free. To extend the life of this complex and expensive unit, make it a rule to renew the oil in it every 60,000 km.

But the transfer case presents unpleasant surprises. The first symptoms of the disease occurred already at 50,000-60,000 km, when cars begin to twitch and stumble slightly in corners. As soon as you notice this, immediately go to the service. Then you can still get by with an oil change with a software flashing for 10,000 rubles. Otherwise, the dealer will bill you for 200,000 rubles. for the new RC, not counting the work on its replacement. This defect is massive for X3, so some workshops have learned to restore "handouts", offering repaired for 70,000 in exchange for your killed. To prevent breakdowns of the transfer case, its clutch and gearboxes, tires of the same dimension and degree of wear on all wheels should be used, and the pressure in the rear and front ones should preferably be maintained at 2.3 and 2.2 bar, respectively.

Only by 2014 the problem was solved by increasing the resource of the node to 100,000-120,000 km. It must be said that this defect became the reason for the appearance of specialized workshops in our country, which restore the mechanism for an average of 30,000 rubles. Another disease of the X3 steering - the creaking and tapping of the steering shaft - is treated by replacing the crosspiece for only 9500 rubles.

THE YOUNGER IS THE MORE RELIABLE

The battery load of the electronics-packed X3 is pretty high.
