However, even after Rafik's rivals appeared, the "Japanese" did not give in to their onslaught, demonstrating consistently high sales thanks to a carefully balanced set of qualities. In particular, the machines of the first two generations were distinguished by enviable reliability. Is it included in the list of advantages of the third generation machine? It's time to find out.

Over the almost twenty-year history of the model, the love of buyers for the RAV4 has not cooled down a single degree: each subsequent modification sold better and better. Even in the crisis years, the car attracted crowds of buyers! The secret of success is simple: Japanese origin, good off-road capabilities, plus a reasonable price.

The third generation Rafik - the XA30 factory index - came to us in 2006, and four years later the Japanese refreshed the "4-wheel drive Recreational Active Vehicle 4 Wheel drive - that's what this abbreviation means) and at the same time supplemented the range with an extended version. A short modification could be bought with a 2-liter engine, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive cars were equipped exclusively with a manual gearbox, and the 4x4 version could be either “manual” or “automatic” - the variator acted as an automatic transmission. The extended wheelbase (LWB) version has a more powerful 2.4-liter engine and a full-fledged "automatic" with a torque converter.

The equipment of all cars is more than generous: the basic version has a full set of safety equipment (7 airbags, ABS) plus full power accessories, air conditioning, “music” and so on, and the top “Prestige” flaunts leather, navigation and xenon.

A three-year-old Rafik now costs from 750,000 to 1,150,000 rubles, while for a car of the current, fourth generation, dealers are asking for a million rubles or more. Therefore, a discount of 250,000–400,000 rubles. looks very tempting. And yet, let's examine in detail the possible costs of maintaining this Japanese.

Body and electrical equipment

There are no complaints about this part of the RAV4, since rust does not occur on three-year-old cars - the paint perfectly resists aggressive environments. And yet, carefully inspect the hood: on individual specimens near the radiator grille, there may be point foci of corrosion - the so-called "bugs". Toyota dealers eliminated this ailment, as a rule, under warranty; and if you do treatment at your own expense, you will have to pay about 10,000 rubles.

The mechanics have no comments on the electrics: there is simply nothing to break in the car, the servicemen say unanimously. Toyota really does not have complex nodes that can cause trouble - hence the hassle-free. All childhood sores were cured by 2008, so three-year-old cars will not cause trouble for the new owner.

Transmission

Don't forget about prevention

To any of the nodes, whether it be "mechanics", "automatic" or variator, the servicemen had no complaints. The clutch on modifications with a manual gearbox serves at least 100,000 km and is traditionally changed as a set - a disk plus a basket. But mechanical versions were not very popular with us, so most three-year-olds are equipped with automatic transmission, to which there are no complaints. Both the CVT and automatic are extremely reliable, and dealers don't recall ever changing them.

There are no problems with the node that transmits torque to the rear wheels in all-wheel drive versions. Unlike fellow classmates, the electronically controlled Haldex, which has recently become very popular, does not work here, but a simpler viscous coupling. If you follow it, changing the oil every 40,000 km according to the regulations, and at the same time do not rape the car with extreme off-road driving, it will last a long time. But if you neglect planned prevention, problems can arise, and costly ones. At first, the clutch will complain about health with a characteristic rumble from under the bottom.

By ignoring the problem, you end up with a 2WD car, and the entire clutch will have to be changed, which is quite expensive.

Engine

Sealing problems

All of them are also considered problem-free. Both naturally aspirated engines easily digest our fuel, even of not the highest quality. The timing chain is driven by a timing chain that lasts at least 200,000 km. When it's time to replace due to stretching, she will let you know with an annoying strum. Attachment belts typically run 60,000-70,000 km.

The little things include the cooling system pump on a 2.4-liter engine - it starts to leak over the years. Simple sealing is not enough here: the pump will have to be changed entirely. The radiator may also leak, but this will not happen before the odometer counts 150,000 km.

In the secondary market, you can find modifications with a 3.5-liter gasoline V6, as well as diesel versions - these cars came to Russia in a roundabout way, bypassing official dealers. Domestic masters do not have any representative statistics about these units.

Chassis and steering

No heroism!

The Rafik chassis, by the standards of modern crossovers, has a standard design: the front wheels are elevated on MacPherson struts, and a multi-link suspension is installed at the rear. The front lower arms will last at least 150,000 km, and the resource of the rear trailing arms is usually 100,000 km. The front shock absorbers on our roads are capable of running 80,000–100,000 km, and the rear shock absorbers will last 50,000 longer. Silent blocks and anthers are unlikely to cause trouble before 150,000 km, but this largely depends on how actively the road services fertilize the streets with reagents in the winter.

There are no complaints about the electric power steering, but the steering rack does not differ in survivability: in some cases it staggers already by a run of 70 thousand km - this will become clear when you hear a tapping on small bumps. Craftsmen are trying to repair it, but this kind of poultices can extend the life of the rail by no more than 10,000–20,000 km. It is wiser to immediately change the part to a new one. Yes, it is expensive - but it is safe and reliable.

Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover, the first generation of which was put into production in 1994. The model name is an acronym for Recreation Active Vehicle. The basis for the creation of the car was the platform from the Toyota Celica GT-Four.

In the first year of production, the crossover was available only in a three-door version, but already in 1995 five-door Toyota RAV 4 went on sale. In 1998, the car was restyled, at the same time a version with a soft fabric roof appeared.

Toyota RAV 4 3 generation went on sale in 2005. Alas, from now on the car has lost one of its signature features - permanent all-wheel drive. The three-door version also did not find a place in the company's production plans.

In 2010, the car was updated, it received a different false radiator grille, modified headlights and taillights, as well as a retouched front bumper. In addition, the crossover has acquired a long-wheelbase modification.

The “two-story” architecture of the dashboard and the design of the door cards remained a hallmark of the interior of the Toyota RAV 4 3. Rounded shapes prevail around the perimeter of the center console, and rectangular air vents crown its top. Inserts "aluminum look" significantly enliven the external appearance. The Toyota RAV4 3 is supplied to the Russian market with two petrol four-cylinder power units: a 2.0-liter Valvematic, Dual VVT-i and a 2.4-liter VVT-i petrol engine.

At the same time, cars are available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. A more powerful 2.4-liter engine is aggregated only with a 4-band automatic and is equipped with an all-wheel drive system.

At the time of sales, dealers offered the Toyota RAV 4 2012 in six different trim levels: Standard, Comfort, Elegance, Comfort Plus, Prestige and Prestige Plus.

The list of installed equipment in the basic version includes front fog lights, 17-inch steel wheels, headlight washers, power windows, power and heated rear-view mirrors, heated front seats, air conditioning, audio system, ABS, ESP, assistance system in year and descent from mountains, active head restraints, airbags and curtain airbags, immobilizer, central locking, etc.

And the image of a ladies' car, rather, even contributed to sales growth.

Our third Recreational Active Vehicle appeared in 2006. Dynamic, well controlled, comfortable car with a strong suspension and some off-road potential. At the beginning of 2009, along with a light restyling, the debut of the 7-seater version of the Long took place, which, however, was not in great demand. Well, the RAV4 suffered a serious modernization in 2010, when, along with a changed appearance, a new 2.0-liter engine from Avensis with a progressive Valvematic system and a stepless variator instead of an outdated 4-speed automatic came. However, the elongated modification of the Long before the change of generations in 2013 was traded with the old interior, 2.4 liter engine and automatic transmission.

So, there were only three motors. At first, two atmospheric gasoline units: 148 hp. (2.0 l) and 170 hp (2.4 l), and after restyling in 2010, the place of the 148-horsepower was taken by a 2.0-liter 158-horsepower engine. A 2.2-liter diesel or a 3.5-liter gasoline engine from overseas markets is not taken into account. All three motors are distinguished by a high trouble-free resource of about 300,000 km. Further, even with a regular oil change every 10,000 km, the output on the cylinders no longer allows them to be repaired. And the "oil burner", which can manifest itself by 150,000 km, is eliminated by replacing the piston rings.

The cost of RAV4 in the secondary market

It is impossible not to mention the RAV4 of the first years of production, which had a design defect - a leak in the cooling system pump. But almost all the cars were then repaired under warranty. And perhaps the only nuance that worries the owners at the turn of 150,000 km is the cooling radiator. Due to the loss of tightness, it was subject to replacement.

RAV4 transmissions, like engines, do not cause any particular problems. The key to their health is, again, regular oil changes. Even the variator can boast of reliability. As soon as you are choosing an all-wheel drive car with a clutch in the rear differential, we recommend that you look in the service book for entries about changing the oil in the above-mentioned unit. The interval should not exceed 40,000 km. The "launched" differential will hum, and then refuse to work at all, turning the car into a front-wheel drive.

The RAV4 body can be considered a model of anti-corrosion resistance, although you should not abuse it, since the paint is exclusively water-based. The front edge of the hood begins to “bloom” first, they were even once repaired under warranty. The weak point is deservedly considered the fifth door. If a spare tire hangs on it, this is a guarantee that the door hinges (5000 rubles per set) have sagged and need to be replaced. There are, however, versions without a spare wheel. They do not have such problems. RAV4 owners have a warm relationship with electrical equipment. A typical malfunction, in fact, is one - a blown rear brake light switch under the brake pedal. The interior plastic is quite hard, which is why it sometimes sins with extraneous sounds that complement the very noticeable flaws in sound insulation. The crossover literally conveys to the salon a cheerful “song” of sand knocking on the inner surfaces of the wings.

Crossovers were invented by marketers who offered buyers a conditional set of off-road qualities at a hefty price. Add in the brand's image, and you get the answer to the question of why the RAV4 is so slowly losing value in the secondary market. The third generation has lost its former main feature - permanent four-wheel drive. Alas, the 3-door version is no more.

The chassis is strong. The only complaint is a stiff suspension, especially at the rear, but reliability is on top. The front lower arms will last up to 150,000 km, and the resource of the rear trailing arms is usually 100,000 km. The front shock absorbers are ready to go up to 100,000 km, and the rear shock absorbers are 50,000 longer. Silent blocks and anthers have the same resource, but they can suffer from urban reagents even earlier. In a word, we did not find any contraindications for buying a used third-generation Toyota RAV4. Due to complete loyalty to the 92nd gasoline, an Americanized 2.4-liter engine looks preferable. Although the 2.0-liter units are not a miss. We are not afraid of the CVT, all "children's" sores, as a rule, are eliminated under warranty or by previous owners. 2nd generation (XA20), 2000–2005

3rd generation (XA30), 2005–2014


The third-generation crossover has become even larger, lost the three-door version, acquired a new transmission with a multi-plate clutch in the rear wheel drive. In some markets, a long-wheelbase seven-seater modification of the car was offered (in Japan it was sold as a separate model of the Toyota Vanguard).

The range of power units consisted of gasoline engines 2.0 (152 hp), 2.4 (170 hp), as well as a 3.5-liter “six” with a capacity of 273 hp. with. Turbodiesels had a volume of 2.0 and 2.2 liters and developed 116-177 liters. with. If you look at the new RAV4 grin, it worked. Previously, the Toyota crossover was the leader in Russian sales in its class. Then he was bypassed. Nissan X-Trail, Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V took the first place in turn. Why did Toyota lose its pedestal? There are many reasons. Of course, RAV4 scared away the domestic male audience with its girlish image, but not only. The relatively high price against the background of children's dimensions also played a role. Many competitors were already close to 4.5m (and some had gone over), but this “Japanese” was still stomping on his short wheelbase 4.3m. Yes, we know that ladies often like smaller cars, but for a highly insecure sex, the issue of size is still relevant.


The new RAV4 fixed all the bugs. Now the crossover can be bought in an extended version - 4.6 m with a wheelbase extended by 100 mm. The trunk has become larger (540 liters instead of 410), the interior is more spacious. Note that while the length of the living space has been increased by 45mm, the distance between the front and rear seats has increased by 65mm. The family will love it. True, the short version of the crossover also remains available - apparently, for those who have problems with parking.

The filling of the RAV4 remained unchanged. Two old petrol engines 2.0 and 2.4 liters. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic. Inside, only slightly tweaked the design of the climate control controls, which could easily be dispensed with, since it did not bring any benefit. But with the front panel of the "Japanese" it was possible to work well. There is over something. The intricate two-story configuration tries to cater to the driver's attempts to adjust the climate on the go, but it's far from ideal. All buttons on the front panel must be located at a level where the eyes can still control the road with peripheral vision, or they must be made available for blind manipulation. In the end, you can come up with something quite simple, like giant circles with hefty icons. I know I grumble about this too often, but by the way, this is a security issue. It is unlikely that someone stops on the side of the road to correct the climate or change the radio station.


NEITHER WEIGHT, NOR INTELLIGENCE
So, the new RAV4 is trying to fit in somewhere between the Outlander and the X-Trail, making the muzzle angrier and moderately puffed up. But these are my guesses, let's see what they think about this in Toyota itself. I open the press release and read: “…design changes emphasize strength and athleticism… even more masculine…” Yes, the Japanese are really tied up with women's toys. We read further: "... the highest class of a sports SUV ..." Strange, why don't they replace the word "sporty" with "reliable"? And one more thing: "... an enlarged body gives the appearance of solidity and status ..." At this point, the owners of the LC200 should cry, they spent two and a half times more on the same qualities.


The Toyota press release did not say how the new RAV4 behaves on the go. I also did not find anything new in the character of the crossover. The last time I drove it was in March 2008 when we compared it to the Jeep Liberty. Then I remember the ease with which the "Japanese" performed all the maneuvers - acceleration, turn, climbing the hill. And the new version does not put pressure on the driver with either weight or intelligence. Moderately obeys the steering wheel, brakes well. The main thing is that he does everything without straining - this is his main quality. And in general, this is a fairly easy-to-drive crossover, which does not differ in either excessive rolls or stiff suspension. Everything is quite harmonious in it. In addition to the possibility of driving off asphalt.

MATTER: TOYOTA RAV4



On the roads, he behaves as before, like a big car with helpless traction control, resisting to the stop. It is better to drive over obstacles with acceleration. And in general, only good geometry allows you to move difficult sections - the angles of entry / exit for RAV4 are 29/25.
