The Volga Automobile Plant has produced many classic and working models for private use. And if production began with sedans, then the first car in the station wagon was the “four”. The new body and new features of the model immediately attracted the attention of buyers.

Model overview: VAZ 2104 without embellishment

Few people know that the VAZ 2104 ("four") also has a foreign name Lada Nova Break. This is a five-seater station wagon, which belongs to the second generation of the "classic" AvtoVAZ.

The first models left the factory in September 1984 and thus replaced the first generation station wagon - VAZ 2102. Although for another year (until 1985), the Volga Automobile Plant produced both models at the same time.

VAZ 2104 cars were created on the basis of the VAZ 2105, only they had significant differences:

  • elongated back;
  • folding back sofa;
  • increased gas tank up to 45 liters;
  • rear wipers with washer.

I must say that the "four" was actively exported to other countries. In total, 1,142,000 VAZ 2104 units were produced.

Along with the VAZ 2104, its modification, the VAZ 21043, was also produced. This is a more powerful car with a 1.5-liter carburetor engine and a five-speed gearbox.

Specifications

A car in a station wagon weighs a little, only 1020 kg (for comparison: the “five” and “six” in the sedan have more weight - from 1025 kg). The dimensions of the VAZ 2104, regardless of the configuration, are always the same:

  • length - 4115 mm;
  • width - 1620 mm;
  • height - 1443 mm.

Thanks to the folding rear row, the trunk volume can be increased from 375 to 1340 liters, which made it possible to use the car for private transportation, summer cottages and even small businesses. However, the back of the rear sofa does not fold completely (due to the specific design of the car), so it is impossible to transport a long load.

However, long elements are easy to fix on the roof of the car, since the length of the VAZ 2104 allows you to transport beams, skis, boards and other long products without the risk of creating dangerous traffic situations. But you can’t overload the roof of the car, since the calculated stiffness of the station wagon body is much lower than that of the sedans of the next generations of VAZ.

The total load on the car (passengers + cargo) should not exceed 455 kg, otherwise damage to the chassis may occur.

"Four" was equipped with two types of drives:

  1. FR (rear-wheel drive) - the basic equipment of the VAZ 2104. Allows you to make the car more powerful.
  2. FF (front-wheel drive) - select models were equipped with front-wheel drive, as it is considered safer; subsequent versions of the VAZ began to be produced only in front-wheel drive.

Like other representatives of the "Lada", the "four" has a clearance of 170 mm. Even today, this is a quite reasonable amount of ground clearance, allowing you to overcome the main road obstacles.

Engine Specifications

Over the years, the VAZ 2104 was equipped with power units of different capacities: from 53 to 74 horsepower (1.3, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 liters). Two modifications (21048D and 21045D) used diesel fuel, but all other versions of the "four" consumed AI-92 gasoline.

Depending on the power of the engine, fuel consumption also differs.

Acceleration to a speed of 100 km / h VAZ 2104 does in 17 seconds (this is a standard indicator for all VAZs produced in 1980–1990). The maximum speed of the machine (according to the operating instructions) is 137 km/h.

Vehicle interior

The original interior of the VAZ 2104 has an ascetic design. All devices, parts and products are designed to perform their functions, there are no embellishments or even a hint of any design solution. The task of the designers of the model was to make a working car suitable for passenger and freight traffic, without focusing on comfort and beauty.

In the cabin - the minimum necessary set of instruments and controls for the car, typical upholstery of the cabin with wear-resistant fabric and removable artificial leather headrests on the seats. The picture is complemented by typical rubber floor mats.

The interior design of the "four" was borrowed from the base model, the only exception is the rear sofa, which for the first time in the history of VAZ models was made folding.

VAZ 2104 cars were discontinued in 2012. Therefore, even today you can meet lovers who do not change their beliefs and use only domestic cars that have been tested by time and roads.

In April 1985, the "four" completely ousted the first VAZ car with a station wagon 2102 from the assembly line.

At the same time, she received several original rear parts from her predecessor.

At the heart of the "four" is the VAZ-2105 sedan. In those days, one of the main tasks of the designer when creating a new
model was the need to combine the maximum consumer effect with minimal production costs. Comfort here is a relative concept. For example, a windshield wiper and an electrically heated rear window appeared on the stock VAZ-2104 only in 1994. In addition, in order to attract new customers, later modifications of the four were equipped with a 5-speed gearbox. The changes also affected the interior of the car - in particular, the VAZ-2104 began to install anatomical front seats from the "seven", which was considered a more prestigious car than the "five".

Of particular note is the diesel modification of the "four". Its release was launched in 1999, in Togliatti. A diesel engine of domestic production with a volume of 1.52 liters was installed on the car. This power unit was produced by the Barnaultransmash enterprise. However, the acquisition of a diesel "four" was inappropriate from an economic point of view. The cost of this modification was higher compared to gasoline counterparts with less power. Accordingly, the diesel "four" was not widely used - the car was produced in small batches, and in 2004 they decided to completely stop the experiment, curtailing production.

One of the main parameters for cars with a station wagon is their capacity and carrying capacity. "Four" here is no exception to the general rules. Many car enthusiasts were willing to settle for minimal comfort and essentially spartan conditions in order to be able to carry as much cargo as possible.


Let's look at specific numbers. All modifications of the "four" luggage compartment volume is 375 liters. However, everyone probably knows that this figure can be increased by folding the rear seats. A few simple movements, and the volume of the luggage compartment is already 1,340 liters. In other words, you can put some bulky cargo there without any problems. At the same time, the back of the rear seat, unlike foreign cars, folds completely. This is not always very convenient, but VAZ engineers considered this option to be more appropriate from an economic point of view. It turns out that the convenience of car owners was sacrificed for lower production costs - quite a typical approach for the Soviet car industry.

Already in the 90s, the VAZ-2104 was already obsolete, clearly losing in many respects to its foreign counterparts. However, at the same time, the Quartet continued to roll off the assembly line, until 2012. Everything is explained simply. The "four" attracted buyers with its two obvious trump cards - a low price and unpretentiousness. These factors, combined with a decent volume of the luggage compartment, made it possible to find new buyers - primarily in the outback. Most of the problems are completely eliminated with their own hands - there would be the necessary spare parts. Well, the repair itself, in comparison with many other models, especially foreign cars, is inexpensive. This, in principle, is the reason for the popularity of the VAZ-2104. This model clearly cannot be attributed to the "bestsellers of the auto industry", but it occupied its niche in the market quite confidently.

VAZ 2104 is a classic 5-door, 5-seat station wagon, produced by the Volga Automobile Plant. It is worth noting that in addition to the VAZ, the "four" was produced at IzhAvto (2002-2012), as well as in Syzran, Kremenchug, Lutsk and even in Egypt. In total, the model was produced from 1984 to 2012. Its appearance is caused by the obsolescence of the "two" design (by the way, it was produced in parallel from 2104 to 1985). Since there was no station wagon based on the luxury "troika", it was decided to produce it on the basis of the already produced one (yes, model 2105 appeared earlier than 2104 - this is normal practice at the VAZ).

The appearance of the updated classic is completely different from its predecessors. The very first striking difference is straight chopped forms, instead of the usual rounded ones. The second is the lack of chrome parts, they were replaced by plastic ones. The "muzzle" is completely from the 2105 sedan - the front headlights with combined turn signals, the side repeaters are also rectangular. The rear lights were 90-degree rotated lights from the 2105. It retained the 2102 station wagon's payload capacity of 955 kg. At the same time, he retained the main drawback of this cargo platform - the "glasses" of the rear suspension protruding inward. Interior


The salon has also been completely changed in comparison with the previous station wagon. Salon was installed from 2105 - new door cards, seats, dashboard. The luggage space was now separated not only by the back of the rear seat - now a shelf was installed there, similar to hatchbacks,.

A lot of power units were installed on the car. At the beginning of production, engines familiar to many were installed: "triple", 1.5 l., 77 hp. and, new at that time, a rotary engine VAZ 2105, with a volume of 1.3 liters. Later versions were equipped with injection engines VAZ 21067 and 21073, with a volume of 1.6 and 1.7 liters, and even a VAZ diesel engine. It was aggregated together with the classic 4-speed "", and later versions of the 5-speed. It is interesting that the "sedan" main pair 3.9, or different from 2102, 4.1, was installed on the car.


Suspension

The suspension was inherited from its predecessor - reinforced classic. Namely, the front independent, on levers with springs, and the dependent rear, also spring.

Since it was taken out of production late, today many cars have been preserved in excellent condition. Although, it is worth recognizing that the quality of the latest cars is much worse than the cars of that era. VAZ 2104 was exported under the name Lada Riva. There were also right-hand drive versions. Export cars were equipped with a speedometer graduated in miles. "Four" has become, perhaps, the most popular domestic station wagon. It is actively used in the Russian Post, having the appropriate color scheme and a white-moon beacon on the roof.


VAZ-2104 Zhiguli / Lada Nova Break is a five-seater station wagon with a classic layout, belonging to the second generation of the "classics" of the Volga Automobile Plant.

Since the end of 1984, this five-seater station wagon of the second generation of the "classics" has replaced the station wagon of the "first" generation - VAZ-2102, on the conveyor, but they were produced together for another year.

The Zhiguli wagon VAZ-2104 remains the most popular domestic small-capacity utility vehicle. He enjoys a strong reputation as a family car and a delivery van for the city "tent trade", so, perhaps, the fashion for him will never pass. The following factors played an important role in this: the availability of spare parts and services, a decent cargo volume of the cabin, a relatively modern design (although obsolete, but for a station wagon this is not the biggest drawback) and relatively low cost. In the basic configuration, the interior trim is quite ascetic, like the base VAZ-2105 sedan.

The VAZ-21043 model, produced in parallel with the VAZ-2104, is a more powerful modification with a VAZ-2103 engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters (carburetor 2107) and a five-speed manual gearbox VAZ-21074, completely unified with a four-speed gearbox, which makes the car more dynamic and pleasant to drive.

Some cars, starting from the 90s, are equipped with a VAZ-2107 type dashboard. The cost in this case is slightly higher. The station wagons of the VAZ-21047 modification, equipped with a radiator lining, a five-speed gearbox, electrical equipment and an interior with bucket-shaped front seats from the VAZ-2107, are valued even more expensively on the market. In fact, this option can be considered a modification of the "luxury" VAZ-2107 with a station wagon body. The upgrades that affected the VAZ-2105 or VAZ-2106 models left aside the "four-station wagon", but nevertheless, some differences in the electrics and power system are possible on the 1984, 1988 and 1990 models.

The folding rear row of seats allows you to increase the volume of the luggage compartment from 375 to 1340 liters, and then you can even transport a two-chamber refrigerator in a package. But the back of the rear seat folds only as a whole, because of this, it is impossible to simultaneously carry a long load and one or two passengers in the back seat. The body structure allows you to place a long trunk on the roof, but it is not recommended to overload it: the estimated rigidity of the station wagon body is much lower than that of the VAZ-2105 and VAZ-2107 sedans (therefore, there are stampings on the roof panel to increase rigidity). The full load of the car must not exceed the allowable 455 kg, otherwise, during movement, due to dynamic loads, the body and load-bearing parts are deformed and violate the suspension geometry. You should also not get involved in towing heavy trailers - the body can "lead". By the way, because of this, you should not overpay for having a towbar on a used copy. Therefore, when buying a "VAZ" station wagon two or three years ago, try the car on the go and carefully (it is advisable to invite a specialist) examine the attachment points of the suspension shock absorbers, levers and power elements of the chassis.

The tailgate on cars until 1994 was equipped with windshield wipers only in export versions, among which the VAZ-21044 versions with a 1.7-liter engine, equipped with a central injection system instead of a carburetor and a catalytic converter, have recently become common. The VAZinterservice company, on the basis of a station wagon, assembles a VAZ-21043-33 pickup truck with a payload capacity of 450 kg in small batches. When buying a VAZ-2104, pay attention to the condition of the inside of the niche in the trunk, where the spare wheel and fuel tank lie, as well as the condition of the rear door seal. Usually, old, long-repainted re-export cars with "twisted-speedometers and an external gloss give out precisely hidden cavities, which the sellers-deceivers" did not reach. - cracks Buying such machines is money thrown to the wind.

Depending on your desire, the VAZ-2104 from the inside can be different. The Spartan version involves a standard panel with the minimum necessary set of switches and instrumentation, upholstery and seats with standard artificial leather headrests, rubber floor mats. The desire for more comfort will be satisfied with improved seat upholstery (front - with a high backrest) made of brushed knitwear, fully molded door linings, brushed floor mats. This feeling will be emphasized by the instrument panel with an additional center console, which has an expanded set of function keys and control equipment, and the original steering wheel. But in both versions, you are reliably protected by inertial (front and rear) seat belts.

In 1994, the VAZ-2104 with a 1.3-liter engine was discontinued. Today, the base model has become the VAZ-21043 with an engine displacement of 1.45 liters, VAZ-21043-02 with 07 interior and dashboard. Not so long ago, a modification of the VAZ-21045 appeared with a diesel engine manufactured by Barnaultransmash, with a volume of 1.52 liters, VAZ-21044-40 with central injection.
