And although the Samara family is no longer produced in Finland, the Samara Baltic models imported into the territory of the Russian Federation work regularly to this day. Of particular interest is the VAZ 2109 model, which served as the progenitor of the four-door series of domestic front-wheel drive cars with a 1500 cm3 power unit.

Quick reference

A distinctive feature of the famous "nine" is not only the novelty of its design, but also the participation in its creation of a number of well-known automobile companies from other countries. For the first time, the model appeared on the roads of Russia in 1987, and only remained in the factory program until 2006.

Power units

Later, its production from car kits was moved to the CIS countries, where it lasted until 2011.

The entire period of production and modernization, the car was offered with 3 engine versions.:

  • The VAZ-21091 model was equipped with a 1.1-liter carburetor engine;
  • VAZ 2109 - factory index of the model with a more powerful 1.3 liter engine;
  • The VAZ-21093 modification was considered the most powerful (80 hp) and was equipped with an engine with a working volume of 1.5 liters.

Electrical equipment

The wiring diagram of the VAZ 2109 for the carburetor was also different :

  • Classic ignition version;
  • Option with contactless ignition.

For reference: But which of the models the buyer will get - no one knew. Cars entered the regions according to a quota set by the government and were sold on a first come, first served basis. If you are lucky and have come "nines" with a 1.5-liter engine, then there is a chance to buy it first on the list in the queue. Price was not the dominant factor.

Foreign assembly of nines

The increased demand for VAZ 2109 cars forced AvtoVAZ to look for ways to increase production. Therefore, some of the car sets were sent abroad, where assembly sites were organized:

  • At the Ukrainian car plant ZAZ in Zaporozhye;
  • On the territory of Finland at the Valmet plant.

For reference: VAZ 2109 assembled in Finland were sold in Europe under the name Samara Baltic. Outwardly, they differed from domestic nines in high-quality paint, improved shape of side mirrors and bumpers, and wheel disks. In the photo below, the car is also equipped with foglights required in this region.
