Ford Focus is a compact car of the American company Ford. Since 1999, about 500,000 vehicles have been produced and sold on the territory of the Russian Federation. As of 2010, the car became the best-selling foreign vehicle in Russia. In European countries, the model is regularly included in the top ten most bought cars.

In addition, the car received the "Car of the Year in the Russian Federation 2012" award in the "Small middle class" section. The C-class family car has become the most popular model for Russian drivers. It replaced the already outdated version of the Escort, which was desperately begging for retirement. Initially, the new Focus was supposed to become a bestseller and became it almost immediately after it appeared on the automotive market. In this article you will find an overview and description of the first and second generation Ford Focus. The whole.

First generation (1998-2005)

Many believe the origin of the Focus was the appearance at the Geneva premiere of the concept version of the Ghia concept, which took place in 1992. The "cart" under the name CW170 was kept secret for a long time. A considerable number of foreign auto journalists believed that it would become the base for the "Fiesta", but they were wrong. The American company has prepared a base for a completely different car - "Focus".

It's no secret that most of the "photo hunters" spied on the novelty, so their work appeared already in 1995. Of course, at that time it was not easy to talk about the details of the upcoming car, but any of her lines spoke of an irresistible trend of cardinal changes.

The newest design philosophy was initially "registered" officially on the humble Ka (1996), then on the Cougar (1998), and as a result, what many expected happened! Ford Focus has been officially unveiled.

Interestingly, the name of the car was approved only in the first part of 1998 - almost before the very presentation of the novelty. The management of the company hesitated for a long time whether to keep the name Escort for the new model or change the name, which would correspond to modern changes in the external appearance. It's not hard to guess what the Americans chose.

Cardinal changes have affected not only the exterior, but also the interior of the vehicle. Graceful and free lines made me recall Mondeo a little, although, on the other hand, they were intertwined with a small Ka. The heavy, fully independent rear suspension Control Blade, which the "big brother" was so proud of, became expensive for the Focus.

Based on this, it was decided to make it according to the type of pressed metal. It is worth recalling that by that time most of the C-class vehicles had semi-independent rear suspension. Auto journalists greeted the car loudly and with pathos.

The level of comfort and handling was appreciated. If we compare the car with competitors (Opel Astra and Volkswagen Golf 4), it was clearly better. From the tangible "trump cards", the American novelty received a fairly democratic price.

2002 restyling

The debut Ford Focus 1 family came with four body options - 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback, 4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon. If we compare the car with the debut generation, then the updated model was really distinguished by the presence of innovations.

The restyled car had modified headlights with integrated indicators and demarcated parts. The bumper installed in front did not already have indicators, but got an auxiliary plastic overlay. The radiator grille was installed lower, and the “fog lights” were decided to be displaced.

Optionally, the novelty could have xenon, an audio system with a changer, a navigation system and climate control. They also decided to change the console placed in the center - in addition to the shape, they changed the color scheme, introducing several new colors to choose from.

The seats were slightly changed, other color schemes for body painting were introduced. On top of that, there is a new diesel power plant based on the European version of the Zetec 1.6.

Specifications

Engine

If we talk about power units, then the American company has equipped the Focus with an extensive list of engines. From the older model (Mondeo), the car got good Zetec-E engines with a volume of 1.8 and 2.0 liters. From Fiesta - engines with low fuel consumption Zetec-SE with a volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters.

From the very beginning, the list of engines included the only diesel "engine" - Endura TDDI, which was the prototype of the Deutz concept version, which the company used on machines of the 1980s. Later, in 2002, it was replaced with an improved Ford Focus 1 Duratorq TDCI engine.

Together with the power plants, 4 transmissions to choose from worked. It could be a 5-speed MTX-75 on "mechanics" (synchronized with 2.0, RS, 1.8 TDCi and 1.8 TDDi), 5-speed IB5 on "mechanics" (worked with 1.4-, 1.6- and 1.8-liter petrol engines), The 6-speed Getrag 285 is also on the "mechanics" and the 4-speed 4F27E on the "automatic" (put on "engines" of 1.6 and 2.0 liters).

On top of that, Ford has prepared sporty versions for its own customers. For 1 family, these were 2 charged modifications: ST170 and RS.

Security

In addition to the main consumer advantages, the car presented itself quite well during crash tests. The 1st generation Ford Focus received from EuroNCAP 4 stars out of 5 in ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers, as well as 2 out of 4 stars in the degree of pedestrian safety. The European company tested a five-door 1.6-liter version.

1st generation sports versions

ST170

The model was released under the auspices of Ford in 2002. Later, the sports car began to be sold around the world. The charged version differed from the standard modification in its improved appearance and interior, a powerful power unit and sports parameters of the main components.

In mass production, the model lasted until 2004, after which it lost its niche to the full-fledged successor of the 2nd family. The ST series received an atmospheric 2.0-liter petrol "four", developing 172 "horses". Together with the "engine" worked 6-speed "mechanics". The car was front-wheel drive.

Unlike the usual modification, the Ford Focus ST170 accelerated to the first hundred in 7.4-8.5 seconds. The maximum speed is 216-220 kilometers per hour. During average driving, the engine consumed 9.1 to 9.4 liters for every 100 km on the combined cycle.

The "warmed up" car was built on the C170 platform, where there was an independent "hodovka" scheme in front and behind - MacPherson struts and a "multi-link" with steering function.

At the front were 300mm ventilated disc brakes, while the rear wheels came with 280mm discs. In general, the car was distinguished by sporty notes in the exterior and interior, a fairly strong engine, satisfying dynamics, good equipment, a confident design and a productive braking system.

Rs

The car also came out in 2002. The vehicle was produced at the Saarlouis plant until 2004. In total, only 4,501 three-door hatchbacks were produced. Inside the RS (Rally Sport) series there was a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter Duratec engine with turbocharging and direct injection.

As a result, he allowed to develop 215 liters. s at 5,500 rpm and 310 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. Synchronized the work of such a strong "engine" with a six-speed manual transmission, which transmitted torque to the front axle.

It was possible to accelerate to 100 km / h in 6.7 seconds. The maximum speed is 232 km / h. For every 100 kilometers traveled, the engine required about 10.1 liters of fuel. The "first" model Focus RS was built on the platform of the regular Focus.

The suspension was independent, with McPherson struts and coil springs in front, and a multi-link design on the rear wheels. If in front there were ventilated disc mechanisms, then they decided to place good old drum devices on the rear wheels.

Appearance Ford Focus RS 1 has a persistent appearance, rather than the "standard" version, an interior that has sporting qualities, a strong turbocharged engine, a stable demeanor on the road and pleasant dynamic performance.

Second generation (2004-2011)

For the first time, the second generation of the Ford Focus car appeared in the fall of 2004 at the Paris Motor Show. American experts showed the audience a serial version in 2 bodies - a 3-door and a 5-door hatchback. After a short time, a 4-door sedan, produced as a prototype, was demonstrated at the Beijing Motor Show.

The second version, named C307, used the C1 "trolley" - exactly the same as Volvo C40, B50, C70, Mazda 3 and Ford C-Max. The company's management decided to tastefully name the global platform for various purposes - "Global Shared Technologies" - such a name was fully justified.

The suspension, which was praised in the 1st series, was moved to the second generation, but with some changes. The body frame has increased in rigidity by 10 percent, which has a positive effect on handling. The size of the new product has also grown. The new vehicle had the function:

  • KeyFree;
  • Sun-reflecting windshield;
  • Adaptive headlights;
  • "Bluetooth";
  • Voice controlled audio system and telephone;
  • Climate control system.

On top of that, the Ford Focus 2 received a new transmission in the form of Durashift: 6-speed "mechanics" and 4-speed "automatic". In the stylistic question, the new model was made again by analogy with Mondeo and Fiesta.

Tangible innovations include interior design materials. Instead of inexpensive plastic, which shone in the debut family, they began to use high quality plastic. The center console was refined, so it looked better and was similar to the Mondeo. There have been some changes in the powertrain lineup.

The workers of the enterprise modified the "engines" with the volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters, and the power plants of Zetec-SE were not installed at all. They were replaced by the Duratec family with the famous 1.6-liter Duratec Ti-VCT, which can shut off valves in order to save gas.

After some time in the updated model, it was changed to a 1.8-liter Duratec. The unique 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines were replaced with Duratec HE. It was taken from the Mazda MZR. The diesel engine family has also been updated. Two power units: 1.6 liters for 90 "horses and 2.0 liters Duratorq decided to purchase from the French PSA.

Security

Speaking of safety, it is worth saying that Ford Focus 2 was able to surprise. The car was able to pick up the highest safety scores from EuroNCAP. The American received 5 points for driver and passenger safety, 4 points for child protection and 2 points for pedestrian protection. "Focus" managed to outstrip its own advanced competitors in terms of safety, such as Renault Megane and Volkswagen Golf.

2008 restyling

Shown in the fall of 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the updated car began to be mass-produced in December of the same year. The following year, the new product was delivered to dealerships. The new car became a reasonable continuation of the 2nd series in a new stylistic branch of the American company called "Kinetic Design".

Based on the past update, the previous version "presented" only the body itself. The back and side parts have changed slightly. One could notice the door stampings, a restyled rear bumper, an added spoiler and a re-shaped exterior mirrors. The front area of the Ford Focus 2 restyling has been greatly changed.

All lighting equipment and body parts were copied from Ford Mondeo - you can highlight the presence of headlights with a broken top line, a raised hood and highlighted wheel arches. Inside, a massive silver insert was added between the "wells" of the engine speed sensor and the speed sensor. The motors that were equipped with the restyled "Focus" have not changed.

RS 2

The second series of the American sports car with the RS index was shown at the 2008 London International Motor Show. The following year, they began to serially produce this "charged" car. The sporty Focus had a redesigned "engine" from the ST version, a sport-type body kit and three types of body paint.

Finished producing the Ford Focus 2 RS in 2010. It was replaced by the Ford Focus RS 500, which differed in body paint, slightly different dimensions and a forced engine. We will talk about the PC 500 a little below. The sports version of the Ford Focus 2 RS was produced only in a three-door hatchback body and was painted in 3 original colors - "Ultimate Green", "Performance Blue" and "Frozen White".

The sports car had a plastic aerodynamic body kit with a massive spoiler. Thanks to this, it was possible to achieve a low indicator for aerodynamic body resistance, which does not exceed the value of 0.38 Cx. Inside "RSki" there are 4 seats, and the interior itself is decorated in a sporty style with embossed Recaro chairs.

There is also a continuous center console and massive dials that make the readings easier. As mentioned above, the sports car had a Duratec engine from the ST version. But the power plant Ford Focus 2 was significantly modernized, which made it possible to increase its performance.

In fact, it was a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder in-line engine with a 20-valve DOHC valve mechanism, but it had an intake manifold, an improved sequential gasoline injection system and a Borg Warner K16 turbine, in which the boost pressure was doubled.

Such changes made it possible to increase the engine power up to 305 "horses" at 6,500 rpm, and the torque limit increased to 440 Nm, held in the range from 2,250 to 4,500 rpm. Now acceleration to the first hundred took only 5.9 seconds, and the maximum speed increased to 263 km / h.

Do not think that such a powerful engine "ate" too much fuel - in the combined town mode, the "engine" consumed about 9.4 liters for every 100 kilometers. Based on its already established traditions, Ford Focus RS was able to maintain front-wheel drive, where there was a Quaife automatic limited-slip limited-slip differential that distributes torque between the front wheels.

As for the suspension: it is independent - in front it has a RevoKnucle sports suspension on the McPherson struts platform, which allows to reduce the load on the struts and increase handling, and a multi-link Control Blade system was installed on the rear wheels, which compensates for horizontal and vertical wheel vibrations.

Through all the implementations, the stability of the Ford Focus 2 RS has been improved. All wheels have ventilated disc brakes with more reliable calipers. Driving a sports car has become easier - there is a hydraulic power steering wheel. In total, more than 11,000 machines were produced.

RS500

In March 2010, the American concern Ford announced that the production of the RS 2 family sports car is planned to be fully stopped by the fall of the same year. To mark this "closure", the management decided to release a "farewell" limited edition of cars in an exclusive version, the circulation of which will not exceed 500 units.

The Ford Focus 2 RS500 differed from its "brother" in body paint, a wheel track lengthened by 40 millimeters and a boosted engine. The limited edition sports car was painted in Panther Black Metallic.

In 1998, Ford made a splash in the automotive world by presenting the first generation Focus at the Geneva Motor Show, which replaced the popular Ford Escort. In 2002, the car underwent a small update, affecting the exterior, interior and technical component, after which it stayed on the conveyor until 2004.

The 1st generation Ford Focus sedan is made in the style of "New edge", which translates as "new face". The car has a streamlined body shape with sharply defined edges adjacent to smooth lines, which gives its appearance of confidence and a certain solidity. The front of the three-volume is topped with a sloping bonnet, a pair of triangular headlights and a neat bumper with integrated foglights and turn signals.

The silhouette of the first Ford Focus in the sedan solution is not devoid of dynamism and is harmoniously cut. The rear of the car is endowed with a sloping, albeit very high trunk line, beautiful lights and a raised bumper, which together create a sense of compactness.

The "first" Ford Focus is a typical representative of the C-class, the length of which is 4362 mm, height - 1430 mm, width - 1698 mm. The wheelbase is 2615 mm, and the ground clearance is 170 mm. The curb weight of the three-volume vehicle varies from 1090 to 1235 kg.

The interior of the 1st generation "Focus" looks interesting and original due to the layout of the front panel. On the "dashboard" of devices, located in a kind of crevice, there is a standard set: a speedometer, a tachometer, a fuel level gauge and a coolant temperature gauge. On the round-shaped center console, there are the "climate" control knobs, a standard audio system (or a dummy plug in its place), a small digital clock and oval ventilation deflectors.

The interior space of the Ford Focus is distinguished by high ergonomics and level of performance. In the interior of the car, inexpensive but pleasant finishing materials are used, the seats are dressed in high-quality fabric.

The front seat in the first generation "Focus" sits comfortably, which is facilitated by comfortable seats, an excess amount of space and a wide range of settings. The rear sofa offers free-flowing seating for three passengers, but the picture is slightly spoiled by the vertical seating position and limited legroom.

The sedan's arsenal includes a spacious luggage compartment designed for 490 liters of cargo. The rear seat folds in unequal parts (60/40 ratio), adding extra volume. A full-fledged "spare wheel" is based under the raised floor, and the compartment itself is unlocked with a key or a button from the passenger compartment.

Specifications. For the "first" Ford Focus, four petrol four-cylinder "aspirated" engines were offered.
The base unit is considered to be a 1.4-liter Zetec-SE unit with a 16-valve DOHC timing belt, generating 75 horsepower and 123 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm and combined with a 5-speed "mechanics" or 4-band "automatic" (these transmissions rely all "fours").
Behind him is a 1.6-liter Zetec-SE engine with the same timing as the previous version, but its output is 100 "horses" and 145 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.
Next in the hierarchy is the 1.8-liter Zetec-E engine with a 16-valve DOHC gas distribution mechanism, producing 116 horsepower and 160 Nm of peak thrust at 4000 rpm.
The role of the "top" is performed by the 2.0-liter 16-valve unit Zetec-E, the maximum potential of which reaches 130 "horses" and 183 Nm of maximum torque at 4400 rpm.

Depending on the installed engine, per hundred kilometers of run "Focus" in a three-volume body consumes on average from 6.6 to 8 liters of gasoline, acceleration to the first hundred varies from 9.3 to 14.4 seconds, and the maximum speed is from 171 to 201 km / h.

There was also a 1.8-liter TDDI turbodiesel, available in two levels of boost: 90 "horses" and 200 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm or 116 forces and 250 Nm of thrust at 2000 rpm. A couple of diesel "four" were "mechanics" or "automatic".

At the heart of the 1st generation "Focus" is the Ford C170 platform, which implies a fully independent suspension with McPherson struts on the front axle and a multi-link part with a steering effect on the rear axle. A hydraulic booster is involved in the steering mechanism, and disc brakes in the front and drum in the rear (in expensive versions - disc) are responsible for deceleration.

Among the main advantages of the car, the owners note the overall reliability of the structure, comfortable suspension with steering effect, confident behavior on the road, a fairly roomy interior and inexpensive maintenance.
There are also disadvantages - mediocre sound insulation, sensitivity to fuel quality and poor paintwork.

Prices and equipment. In 2015, the “first” Ford Focus on the Russian secondary market can be purchased at a price of 150,000 to 250,000 rubles, depending on the modification, year of manufacture and technical condition. It is worth noting that the basic version of the sedan has meager equipment: power steering, driver's airbag and an adjustable steering column.

Ford Focus is a car in the C-class segment produced by Ford from 1998 to the present day. Throughout its history, the car has undergone three generations of development. British magazine CAR ranks it as one of the 50 Greatest Cars of the Last 50 Years.

Focus is a very popular car - Europe is among the top 10 best-selling cars, and in Russia it was the best-selling foreign car in 2010, and in 2012 the best-selling car in the world.

Focus's closest competitors are cars of other brands, such as Citroen C4, Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, Renault Fluence, Kia ceed, Opel Astra, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Auris, Chevrolet Cruze, Mazda 3, Lada Vesta, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Almera, Peugeot 308, Renault Fluence and Volkswagen Golf.

Who wouldn't want to ride Car of the Year 1999 or play the unforgettable Colin McRae racer who conquered the rally tracks behind the wheel of a Ford Focus? Especially since the purchase of this car is not associated with sacrifices: a functional and attractive body, an acceptable amount of interior space, quite successful and economical engines. The purchase is also prompted by the excellent suspension, thanks to which the car behaves as if it is glued to the asphalt.

Unfortunately, most of the offers on the secondary market are not in the best condition. Within a few years, it turned out that the Ford Focus 1 had problems with body corrosion.

Carefully check the equipment of the specimen you are interested in. Modern appearance does not mean appropriate equipment - even after restyling, a car can only have one airbag and power steering. ABS and power accessories were not included in the list of basic equipment.

It is believed that the first generation Ford Focus engines are not suitable for the installation of LPG gas equipment. This is partly true. Plastic manifolds were susceptible to air explosions in the intake tract, but they disappeared with the advent of multipoint multipoint injection. However, this is not a reason to neglect the valve adjustment every 40,000 km, which will require about 5,000 rubles.

What can you do yourself?

Timing belt

Replacing the timing belt in 16-valve 1.4- and 1.6-liter gasoline and diesel engines is not overly complicated. The kit only consists of a toothed belt and a tensioner roller. In the case of gasoline 1.8 and 2.0 liters, two or three rollers have already been installed, depending on the year of manufacture and version. The services use a special tool for fixing the shafts, but you can get by with "folk" methods. Unfortunately, 1.6-liter Focuses often come to car services with symptoms of poor performance of the power unit. Upon examination, it is revealed that the timing belt has jumped one tooth: the engine is running, but it shakes, and it does not develop its full power.

Brakes

Replacing brake pads and discs or brake fluid does not require complex operations, special tools and great knowledge. Trouble can arise when trying to replace the rusted tubing: practice and additional tools will come in handy to unscrew the rusted tips.

All Ford Focus I have ventilated brake discs on the front axle (minimum thickness 20 mm) and non-ventilated discs (minimum thickness 8 mm) or drums (maximum diameter 204 mm) at the rear. The brake fluid (approx. 0.7 l DOT 4) should be changed every two years. The thickness of the pads and discs (a vernier caliper is useful) should be checked at least once a year.

Power steering

All the first Focuses were equipped with power steering. Servicing the power steering is limited to tightness control (potential leaks are pipe joints) and periodic fluid changes.

The working fluid is 0.5 liters of the branded Ford S-M2C195A, which can be replaced with a fluid close in its characteristics to transmission oils for automatic transmissions, for example Transmax Dex III or ATF Multivehicle.

Engine oil

The capacity of the gasoline engine lubrication system is 3.8 liters - for a 1.4 liter engine and 4.3 liters - for all others. There are no special requirements for the properties of the oil. It is enough to adhere to the SH (API) or A1 / B1 (ACEA) class and a viscosity of 5W-30 or 5W-40.

In the case of diesel units, 5.6 liters of 5W-30 class CF (API) oil must be prepared. Since turbodiesels were not equipped with a particulate filter, there are no strict requirements regarding the special properties of the oil. When replacing it, it is necessary to install a new oil filter, which in gasoline 1.6-2.0 liters is the same as in diesel versions.

Ford recommends checking the engine oil level frequently and changing it once a year. In addition, there is a mileage limit of 15,000 km. Taking into account the age of the car and difficult operating conditions, it is better to reduce the recommended oil change period to at least 10 thousand km. The maximum permissible oil consumption should not exceed 0.5 l / 1000 km. The distance between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick corresponds to: in gasoline engines - 0.75 liters, and in diesel engines - 1.5 liters. It is best to keep the oil level low in winter for quick warm-up, and high in summer for better cooling.

The process of changing the oil itself is simple, and the filter is easily accessible from below. However, do not forget that used oil and old filter are very dangerous for the environment and should not be thrown into the regular trash. It is advisable to give waste for disposal. Unfortunately, at present this opportunity is available only in a small number of Russian cities.

Cooling system

Check the tightness and operation of the system regularly, preferably at the same time as checking the oil level. The plastic housing of the thermostat is often to blame for coolant leaks.

Replacement of the coolant is required after 5 years or 100,000 km. Ford recommends using a fluid called Motorcraft Super Plus 2000, but multi-purpose coolants such as Radicool NF Castrol can also be used.

Note: power units, depending on the type, have different thermostat opening temperatures. The water pump is driven by a drive belt (not a timing belt), which is worth having in your spare parts kit.

Cooling system volume: petrol 1.4 and 1.6 liters - 5.5 liters; 1.8 and 2.0 l - 6.0 l; diesel - 6.5 liters.

Computer diagnostics

Ford Focus of the first generation, as a rule, did not give a reason to visit diagnostic centers. Nevertheless, diagnostics can be very useful in troubleshooting not only the engine, but also the assistance systems - ABS or ESP. To count errors, the universal KTS device, which is available in many car workshops, is sufficient. Therefore, a visit to an authorized Ford service is not required. The diagnostic connector can be found near the driver's feet on the panel under the cover.

VIN number

The identification number is located under the windshield (visible from the outside along with information on the number of airbags) and on the floor at the front passenger's feet. It is worth noting that by VIN number, unlike many companies, Ford allows you to find out not only the model year, but also the exact date of production: year and month.

Marking:

WFO - manufacturer code (Ford Germany),

body type: A - 5-door, B - 3-door, F- sedan, N - station wagon,

XX - unused characters,

G - country of origin (G - Ford Werke Aktiengesellschaft, Cologne, Germany), C - assembly (C - Saarlouis / Langley),

D - (D - Focus),

A - body version (repeat),

W - year of manufacture (W - 1998, X - 1999, Y - 2000, 1 - 2001, 2 - 2002, 3 - 2003, etc.),

P is the month of production (here P is August, but the code depends on the year of manufacture),

12345 is the serial number of the body.

Chassis

Everyone knows about the need to adjust the suspension geometry. But in the case of the Ford Focus, the rear suspension must also be adjusted. The process itself is not complicated - for this, there are eccentric bolts on the auxiliary beam that secure the wishbones. Unfortunately, the bolts are very rusty and have to be cut to adjust. Therefore, before the procedure, it is necessary to purchase new bolts in advance.

The toe-in of the front wheels must be set to 0 and the rear wheels to 2.5 mm (tolerance +/- 1 mm). The reason for the departure of the angle of inclination of the wheels (camber), as a rule, are the wishbones of the suspension.

Cabin filter

It is recommended to change the cabin filter once a year. Its low price allows you to do it without hesitation. The filter can be accessed under the hood, next to the bulkhead (right). To get to it, you must carefully release the latches on the mounting plate and bend up the plastic cover. After replacing the filter, everything falls into place. The same cartridge 350x167x29 mm is suitable for all modifications of the model. There are many alternative grades on the market, both conventional and coal.

Air filter

During the annual maintenance, it is enough to check the condition of the filter and clean it thoroughly. You can use a compressor for this. Ford recommends changing the filter every 45-60 thousand km. Fortunately, it is very cheap - only about 250 rubles, so in case of any doubts about its performance, it is better not to hesitate and replace it. The filter has dimensions of 265x147x47 mm and is suitable for almost all power units, with the exception of Focus ST.

To replace the filter, you need a socket wrench, which must be unscrewed 4 screws around the perimeter of the case. When replacing, thoroughly clean the air filter housing with a cloth or compressed air. After installing a new cartridge, pay attention to the location of the seal - a loose or deformed seal will not perform its important function.

Tires

In models with an engine up to 130 hp 14 "wheels on 5" steel rims or 15 "on 6" alloy wheels are used. Sports versions are shod with 17- or 18-inch wheels. When there are 3 people in the car, it is necessary to set the pressure in the front and rear wheels to 2.2 atm. (0.22 MPa). When fully loaded, it is necessary to raise the pressure on the front axle to 2.3 atm. (0.23 MPa), and on the back up to 3.1 atm. (0.31 MPa).

Lamps and fuses

One of the main changes in the modernization process of the Ford Focus in 2001 was the headlights. In pre-styling cars, one H4 60/55 lamp was used for low and high beam. After that, the H7 lamp was responsible for the dipped beam, and both 55W for the far H1. Lamps in foglights have also changed: H1 gave way to H11, in ST 170 - H3. Xenon was available as an option.

Access to headlight bulbs is difficult, but not to the point of hopelessness. First you need to remove the metal latches, then the black cover, and then you can remove the light bulb. Most other lamps are only accessible after dismantling the housing. Despite the easy accessibility of the reflector screws, do not try to unscrew them - another screw is located in a bend and is difficult to reach.

The Focus uses medium-sized flat fuses. The color indicates the current that the fuse can withstand: brown - 7.5 A, red - 10 A, blue - 15 A, yellow - 20 A, white - 25 A, light green - 30 A, orange - 40 A. And remember that a blown fuse is often a sign of a malfunction that needs to be found.

What breaks down in the Ford Focus 1?

Even great looking specimens can further unbalance their owner with quite significant drawbacks - so a thorough inspection before buying is a must! Compact Ford is not a very reliable car. Its main problem is the rather rapidly progressive corrosion, which can be found on the edges of the doors, inside the sills, on the suspension elements and on the exhaust system. Pay particular attention to the condition of the brake hoses and pipes.

Gasoline units, like Endura diesels, are quite reliable. In Duratorq diesel engines, problems relate to a two-mass flywheel (resource about 150 thousand km), a starter, injectors, an exhaust gas recirculation valve (unfortunately, it is combined with an aluminum manifold). The suspension tolerates Russian roads well, and its complete bulkhead with original spare parts will cost 60,000 rubles. Repair will be much cheaper if you change only individual elements, and not the entire lever assembly.

Rust attacks from behind

While the front end is good at resisting corrosion, the rear end quickly gives up. Wheel arches and the rear of the sills are the most favorite places for rust. If you come across a specimen without traces of corrosion, buy it without hesitation. Rear brake pipes are also susceptible to corrosion, which is not safe.

Corrosion on items such as the anti-roll bar or the stabilizer bush brackets is okay. But, it would seem, a simple replacement of the stabilizer rubber bands turns into the use of a grinder and a set of new brackets.

Steering gear

The steering gear can become a source of trouble in two cases: fluid leaks at the joints of the pipelines and the appearance of play in the steering rack. The restoration process, depending on the service, will require from 10 to 30 thousand rubles.

Fuel injection system

Diesel with a common rail system can cause a lot of problems. One of them: failure of the high pressure pump leaks in the fuel system.

Turbine-intercooler branch pipe

The only problem is the TDCi version. The loss of power and soot from the exhaust pipe have a mundane reason - damage to the pipe connecting the turbine with an intercooler (intercooler). The branch pipe (about 1000 rubles) can be replaced by yourself.

Multi-link suspension

The secret to ideal behavior lies in the multi-link rear suspension. Unfortunately, its maintenance costs are quite high. After 100,000 km, backlash appears in the chassis. The wishbone is often the first to break. Replacing several levers is not so expensive, but you will have to fork out well for all the elements - more than 10,000 rubles. It is not so easy to dismantle the levers of the system - the bolts are tightly seized.

Engines: Common Problems and Consumption?

Petrol 1.4 and 1.6 families Zetec-SE

The 1.4-liter naturally aspirated engine debuted earlier in the Fiesta, where it had slightly different parameters. The 1.6-liter engine came out with the Focus. While the 1.6-liter does its job satisfactorily, the 1.4-liter is too weak. This is reflected in the market - there are not many cars with a 1.4-liter engine. Both motors are reliable and easy to operate.

The 1.6-liter unit was developed by Japanese engineers Yamaha. It is an aluminum block with a 16-valve head, mechanical valve clearance and timing belt. The powertrain guarantees the perfect compromise between performance and fuel consumption. He is content with 8 liters of fuel per 100 km, which is not bad in comparison with competitors, but far from sensation. Sprint to 100 takes 11.3 seconds. In the upper rev range, the engine lacks elasticity - it takes more than 20 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km / h.

The 1.6 liter engine shows no signs of wear even at high mileage (over 200,000 km). Including, there are no leaks and abnormal oil consumption.

Gasoline 1.8 and 2.0 families Zetec-E

This offer is for the more demanding. Structurally, these are modernized motors of the old Mondeo. The Zetec-E family is more robust than the SE, thanks in part to its cast iron cylinder block. With frequent high loads, this solution extends the service life. The crankshaft and connecting rods are the same in engines. The difference in displacement is achieved by the diameter of the cylinders.

Engines do not have typical malfunctions, which are often random in nature: ignition coils, small oil leaks (defective oil plugs at the beginning of production), the need to rewrite the ECU (also the first tricks).

The 1.8-liter version consumes an average of about 9 liters per 100 km, and acceleration to 100 km / h takes just over 10 seconds. The 2-liter engine is even less economical, but it allows you to enjoy driving. For fans of fast driving, there are sports versions ST 170 and ST. The latter has an advanced design with forged pistons and connecting rods.

Diesel 1.8 TDDi

The Endura series are Ford's first direct injection diesel engines. They use a classic rotary injection pump. The power difference is achieved through different software. These diesels make you reckon with loud and unpleasant performance. The reward will be - low cost of operation: the unit does not cause too much trouble. The weakest version accelerates to 100 km / h in 14.5 seconds and burns 5.5 liters of fuel on average.

Diesel 1.8 TDCi Duratorq (Common Rail)

In the 21st century, diesel lovers cannot stand the increased noise and weak dynamics. The standard is diesel with direct injection using a common rail system, which is supplied with fuel by a high pressure pump. Further, it enters the injectors, which meter the fuel supply to the cylinders with incredible precision. The injection system is supported by an efficient variable geometry turbocharger and charge air cooler. A dual-mass flywheel is also used. Fortunately, the Duratorq only complies with Euro-3 standards, and therefore does not have a particulate filter. The result is good performance and reliability. In this regard, Endura cannot compete with Duratorq. However, the Delphi 1.8 TDCi fuel system is sensitive to fuel quality. In the event of its failure, the cost of repairing the injection system will amount to about 10,000 rubles.

The weakest version reaches 100 km / h in less than 12 seconds, the more powerful in less than 11 seconds. Elasticity of Duratorq is better than that of Endura: the former takes only 10.5 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km / m, while the latter takes 22 seconds. It is curious that the average fuel consumption of a more modern engine is higher - about 6.5 liters per 100 km. In addition, it is expensive to troubleshoot.

The blocks of both TDDi turbodiesels are made of cast iron, which in the late 90s was considered a sign of deep conservatism. The motors became a further continuation of the old and problematic 1.8 TD. Fortunately, the engineers managed to get rid of the main drawback - the two timing belts. The new engines have received a more reliable solution. The lower crankshaft pulley drives the injection pump via a drive chain, which theoretically has a lifetime. The camshaft, in turn, is connected to the injection pump with a short strap. The belt can withstand over 100,000 km. But remember that if it breaks, the valves will be destroyed, so you should not forget about replacing. Attention! During the production process, Ford changed the shape of the camshaft cogwheel and belt teeth. Review the service documentation before replacing.

A typical drawback of Focus turbodiesels is the small resource of the dual-mass flywheel (about 100,000 km). The total cost of repairs can be about 25-30 thousand rubles. Another common problem is air leaks due to cracking in the intake pipes. The cost of the repair is about 1000 rubles.

Transmission

The model range used two mechanical (MTX-75 and IB5) and one automatic transmission. Both manual transmissions are quite reliable, and the IB5 is the most widely used. With age, the likelihood of wear on bearings and synchronizers increases. In IB5, the 5th gear is the most vulnerable. They are located at the very top of the box, and therefore the loss of even 200 ml of oil "dehydrates" the gears, which leads to wear.

Automatic transmission 4F27E is quite hardy, and before the first major repairs it serves 250-350 thousand km. Solenoids are handed over a little earlier - on a segment of 150-250 thousand km. This is one of the few machines that can be sorted out without removing from the car. Overhaul will require about 50-70 thousand rubles.

American version

The Focus, after the first generation Mondeo, was Ford's next international model. In the United States, he was named ZX3, ZX4, ZX5. The number means the number of doors. From a purely practical standpoint, American versions of the Focus are of little interest. A compact with a weak two-liter engine and an automatic transmission is voracious and requires too much money for a low level of comfort. Corrosion is another problem common in most low-cost ocean-going vehicles.

Sales market: Russia.

The Ford Focus sedan (DFW) is a practical and at the same time comfortable option, which was considered by Russian buyers both as a family car and a corporate car. It was released after the three- and five-door hatchback model (in February 1999). The Ford Focus redefined the concept of the popular golf class. The successor to the Escort is a bold blend of shapes and lines, dubbed the "new face". Used in "Focus" multi-link rear suspension Control Blade offers improved elasto-kinematic characteristics, increasing stability and controllability of the machine. With a stylish and memorable look and excellent ride quality, the Focus has become a truly striking novelty. And on the Russian market, it is also the first foreign-made car that has received a permanent registration at a domestic assembly plant. But this happened later, in 2002, at first cars from Europe (assembled in Spain) were offered to Russian buyers. Modifications of the sedan were offered with gasoline engines of 1.6 liters (100 hp), 1.8 liters (115 hp) and 2.0 liters (130 hp).

The interior of the Ford Focus sedan demonstrates as bold an approach to design as the exterior of the car. At the same time, it is distinguished by a solid finish, pleasant and high-quality seat upholstery, well-thought-out ergonomics. Large doorways are convenient. Four trim levels were offered: Ambiente, Comfort, Trend and the top-version Ghia (only with powerful 1.8 and 2.0 engines). The basic version includes only the essentials: power steering, adjustable steering column, budget fabric trim and seat upholstery, mirrors in sun visors. The Comfort package will offer front power windows, air conditioning, central locking with remote trunk opening, pockets in the front doors. The Trend version gets richer in fog lights, aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and trunk lighting. The most expensive version of the Ghia will offer rear windows, an adjustable pause wiper, a driver's seat with an armrest and an electric height adjustment, a velor interior. An optional winter package added power mirrors and heated mirrors, seats, windshield, washer nozzles.

The Focus I sedan was officially delivered to the Russian market starting with a modification with a 1.6-liter 100 hp engine. The more powerful 1.8-liter unit has a reserve of 115 hp. The most powerful engine - 2.0-liter - produces 130 hp. In this top modification, the manufacturer claims a maximum speed of 201 km / h and 9.3 seconds of acceleration from zero to “hundreds”. Depending on the modification, the first generation Ford Focus could be equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. Combined fuel consumption is in the range of 6.8-9.4 l / 100 km. The Focus fuel tank has a capacity of 55 liters.

The first generation Ford Focus sedan has front-wheel drive, MacPherson-type independent front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. In fast corners, the steering effect of the rear suspension manifests itself. Front ventilated disc brakes are combined with rear drum brakes in the initial modifications, and disc brakes are also installed with 1.8 and 2.0 motors at the rear - the developers considered this combination to be more optimal. In all modifications, the car received a power steering. The dimensions of the body of the Focus I sedan are: length - 4382 mm, width - 1700 mm, height - 1440 mm. The 2615 mm wheelbase provides a good margin of space for rear passengers (for comparison, note that the predecessor Ford Escort sedan had dimensions of 4290x1679x1349 mm, and the wheelbase was 2520 mm). The minimum turning radius is 5.45 m. The trunk volume of the Focus I sedan is 490 liters.

In the initial configuration, the Ford Focus sedan 1998-2001 offered an adjustable steering column and airbags for the driver and front passenger, belts with a pretensioning and load limiting system. The top-end configuration offered an ABS system and side airbags. In the Euro NCAP 1999 crash test, the car received four stars (out of five) for driver and adult passenger safety and two stars (out of four) for pedestrian safety.

Ford Focus has become a bestseller since its appearance on the Russian market, and a kind of benchmark for a family car. Due to the wide distribution of this model, there are no special problems with maintenance, finding spare parts, etc. It should be borne in mind that Focus was often used as a corporate vehicle. All characteristic diseases of the machine are well studied and this information can be easily found on the Internet. Restyling of the Ford Focus took place in 2001.
